Nice to meet you at open house Wayne, and I may be interested in some wheels in the coming weeks. Nice set of parts, I have a long list myself. I like the steering wheel to.

Ej207 (jdm Sti)
Stock heads
Stock bottom end
Stock Sti pink injectors
Stock vf37 twin scroll turbo, with stock equal length headers
06 Usdm sti oil pan, killer B larger oil pick up and baffle
Perrin inlet
Custom intake
Open source tune of jdm sti ecu and Usdm wrx ecu
Dieted 2002 usdm wrx harness with avcs provisions
Dw55 fuel pump
Sparco steering wheel
Etc etc, but cool stuff and it should all be fun . I will make 300-335whp 315-340wheel torque with a redline of 8700. The ej207 revs out great .

We gotta retro the wipers to one blade as you mentioned, I took a look today, should not be too bad.

Cant wait to see your build. Keep up the post/pics. Very exciting. Any reason you guys are choosing the ej20 over ej25s? And stand alone harness? Details plz if possible.

metalmaker12

I just like the rev of the ej207 and for a light weight car with a 5spd and high rev, I will have very long gears and that's why I decided on it. The 2.0's tend to like rev better at stock and moderate engine builds. You can make a 2.5 get their to, just my preference for this build. I like the 2.5 is better in the wrx

I just did some searching for a version 7 or 8 EJ20, and wow their expensive! You could almost get a 06 donor for that. Do you guys have a good connection for engines? Or are you just baller? haha

metalmaker12
06-16-2013, 10:39 PM
I got one for 3,700, I am not a baller lol, just a fabricator/ welder that stays busy. I know the front wheels were 17's , and maybe 235/40s and the rears were 255/40r18

I have a GT2560R sitting on the shelf that is going on the car. If it isn't big enough once I get it on my dyno I'll spring for a GT2871R which has the same footprint. I am a Garrett dealer so I'll swap turbine housings to find out which works best.

I had DTC-30 pads on my 06wrx for DD duty. Squealed like crazy and dusty as all get out. I remember my friend going along for a ride in the neighborhood (just put a new motor in) and he asked how well the brakes worked with those pads. I was only doing about 30, but he smacked his head on the windshield. I didn't know he wasn't buckled up. Lol.

What club is running at Roebling this weekend and what are you driving? I'm going to go out on a limb and say our buddy Jon Krolewicz. He runs a "Seat Time" program that we all use for test and tune, and testosterone tuning as well.. Jon has an awesome program with tons and tons of track time at a really good price.

It's the MBZ of Buckhead weekend, we'll have 2 track Elises, Elise turbo street car, and a T3 350z nissan. All the track time you could want. Last year I got 10 laps behind the wheel of a 2010 GT3 Porsche. 2 days with all the track time you can stand, dinner on River street Saturday night, BBQ at the track Sunday. What's not to like :D

255lph Walbro pump

Wayne,

Just an opinion here, but the latest Walbros are junk. Most of my Mustang friends have ditched them (due to failure). Mine failed on my Roadster after ~2 hours of run time with less than 5 miles of go-cart. Not sure if they moved factories, or what changed, but after asking around it seemed to be a general consensus. Your mileage may very.

My thought was after selling the lake house, ski boat, sailboat, and two kayaks, I would have a lot more time on my hands.

Not so. I did get a little work done yesterday. alternator off, PS pump off. Most everything off the motor but the fuel lines. Almost ready to pull the motor. Maybe later this week or Saturday.

Have fun, absolutely love that track.

255lph Walbro pump

How many HP is the stock pump good for? Any reliability issues with them otherwise?

metalmaker12
06-19-2013, 10:56 AM
Deatschwerks and aeromotive, the stock pump is good for about 300 whp max, but that's why a upgrade is just a good idea. Walpro used to make a great pump, but of late they are not great

Wayne Presley
06-19-2013, 11:26 AM
I'm a dealer for Deatschwerks so if you want pumps or injectors I can supply them. One of my donors had the Walbro pump in it is the reason I'm using it. Might have to go with the DW300 if I decide to go E85... :D

I believe I still have the stock STI pump that came on my fuel pickup if anyone wants it.

Their site says you get a rebate form when the product arrives. I wasn't sure if that was exclusive to ordering it from the factory or if it comes in the box regardless of who I buy them from. I have the dark blue WRX injectors in my donor so I'd get $200 if I send them my old ones.

The rebate is directly from DW and the injectors bought from me would be included. There are only certain injectors that are part of the rebate offer so check to be sure yours are part of the program. Looks like they are.

Erik's Raijin wheels showed up first and I thought, "I bought the wrong wheels!". Then mine showed up 2 days later and saw that the Kojins looked just as good.

And as a side note if you ever get to drive a Mercedes SLS at the race track, you should do it. Amazing car and what a sound it makes with the V8 at 7500 rpm down the front straight!

I would have loved to have grabbed my GoPro but that was all the way down at the trailer and I wasn't going to risk him changing his mind to let me drive it while I walked down to get the camera. The car is so cool that the factory NAV system will lap time for you and has quite a few tracks start/finish lines already preprogrammed. It was running 155mph when I got on the brakes in turn 1.

There was a guy at the one lap of america race this year with one and we were all amazed at the sound as well. Sounded like a jet going by. Absolutely no normal engine noise. It was the weirdest thing.

Hi Wayne,

It was very nice to meet you at the open house.

You mentioned that the Cusco LSD was much cleaner than some of the other LSDs which left metal flakes in the transmission fluid. What are the tradeoffs between the Quaife (Torsen style) and the Cusco (Clutches). How long does the Cusco clutches last between rebuilds? The Quaife has lifetime guarantee and the Cusco needs periodic clutch rebuilds (how often?). I am still trying to figure out which LSD will be best for my 818SR build. I want to understand the trade-offs to make as informed a choice as I can.

Wayne, Metalmaker, RM1SepEx and others,

What do you recommend and why? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Cheers!

There is a detailed thread somewhere

all out racing, clutch type, adjustable but req maint
street/autocross use torsen (Quaife, OBX , OBX must be rebuilt before use, Erik did a nice piece on that) no maint works well for all around use

IMNSHO haha

I'm using a quaife for my street/autocross machine, possible track day beastie

The aerocatch are nice. get the top mount. The bottom mount are smaller but real hard to get a good look so people end up using trim rings.

You have to keep them clean, as gunk can get in the spring/latch mechanism.

are cool too. They hold 150lbs each.

I think those latches are just simple push buttons, not lockable. You'd need something like locking aerocatch pins.

Is the seat mounted yet? The harness openings look much more in line with the bar behind it.

Did you have the same issues with having to remove some minor ancillary items to get it to fit? Any reason you went motor trans first vs Erik's method of suspension then motor?

If im not mistake you should be able to turn abs off via pulling the fuse, or flipping a switch (if installed) without effecting the braking system correct? I would install abs and have a switch in an at least semi hidden place. It's looking good

The seat is just sitting in the car and I don't know if that is the seat I'm going to use. I put the engine in first because the motor will not be in the way of the suspension install but the suspension will be in the way of the motor install.

Although I am not building an 818, I really enjoy watching your and Erik's build. You all are really humming along and doing some awesome work! Thanks for keeping us updated. I respect how much effort it must take while also trying to run a business and build a car. It is quite selfless! Thanks!

I cannot imagine anyone installing a boot over that, that is like buying a Ferrari and swapping a Toyota Corolla engine in it.

How can you properly adjust that cable stopper? I mean do you have to run the engine and see when the gear engages? Or engine shut off it's sufficient?

Don't the Roadsters still use an actual linkage for shifting? keep in mind this cable shifter is designed for Hondas that originally had solid linkage (Civics, Integras, etc) swapping a Honda K-series engine (from RSX,TSX, Civic SI, etc) into the front of a the car. Its a fantastic piece from K-tuned and I'm very excited to see how Wayne has to modify it it to work with the cabling coming from the back of the car.

Why is that tank better?

Aluminum maybe? Baffled? Blatter? Foam? Lots of upgrades to increase the price and quality.

I like Wayne's idea of making more leg room, and looking at some pics it seems that there's defiantly room to make the tank larger by making it taller.

I plan to make a baffled aluminum tank, but that will be during winter 2015 upgrades. Gotta see if its neccesary.

Frank818
07-05-2013, 09:36 PM
Yeah pricier, I get it. :)

In my case I don't mind a very very very big tank, as I am only 5.6. Actually I prefer the biggest tank possible, like 18-20gallons. But I guess so far only 13gal exist.

BTW, nobody has any idea of the potential fuel consumption? Yeah I know it varies depending on weight and power, but anyone has a reference whatsoever?

Not that I care "that" much, but just for the fun of knowing.

Wayne Presley
07-05-2013, 09:59 PM
Most cars have about a 350-375 mile range, and 818 getting 30 mpg with a 13 gallon tank gives you 390 mile range (6+ hours). How much more do you need?

Nice progress. Glad to see the additional products for those wanting a lot of tire under the rear. Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together.

I've always looked at those motive bleeders. They seemed too easy though. Figured they wouldn't work well at all. My wife would be ecstatic if I didn't ask her to help me bleed my brakes anymore.

Wayne –

There are disadvantages to being a de facto Beta Builder. People ask you a lot of nuisance questions…………..

Here’s mine – it’s a problem I’m hoping you can help me with:

If you can find the time, could you take a couple of pictures of your engine compartment? One from the engine bay’s right front quadrant looking straight down from above. The other from the rear, underneath the chassis and engine, looking forward along the right side.

The reason? I have commissioned a vendor in Calgary to build a custom exhaust for my NA 818 build. Although my donor is an ’04, I’ll be using an ’06 oilpan in order to use their 4- into-1 EL header which wraps around the front of the oilpan and terminates on the right side of the engine bay. The EL header terminates at the same location as the stock NA header, and the flange is in the same horizontal plane as the rest of the header. The rest of the system will also be custom, since the exhaust tubing at the collector will be larger (2.5”) than the stock system, and whatever FFR provides will probably not be an ideal fit. The vendor’s compact high flow cat will be paired with a shorty muffler to complete the system.

The problem: I need to figure out if there anything in the 818’s frame superstructure likely to keep us from running the exhaust straight back from the header, exiting beneath the body panels at the rear. Or to determine that we will need to run the exhaust up and over the axle and/or transmission and then back down again.

The goal is for my vendor to design a complete system for me that will be pretty much plug-and-play possibly with just the addition of a couple of short straight lengths of exhaust tubing – or a couple of mandrel bends if necessary.

The photos should help us figure that out.

So you're not using a water tank? I thought you (or was it someone else) said you'd use a 3gal tank. Or maybe it was in another car.

So it fits on where the TMIC (air-to-air) would have been fitted. Nice. :)

The water tank is an option, not really needed on a street car as it's going to be really hard to drive it fast and long enough to heat soak the system on the street.

If you mount the exchanger up front I agree there will be quite enough water circulating in the plumbing already.
I also agree it will be hard to drive hard and long enough on the street! :)

Wayne,
Is there no way to re-clock the compressor side on that turbo and run the charge pipe from the turbo to the intercooler similar to how Eric ran his? Seems like surrounding the 'cold' side of the turbo piping to the intercooler with the hot uppipe and downpipe on either side would make the intercooler have to work even harder.

We've run a similar Air to water intercooler set up w/ heat exchanger and pump at my shop for a customers WRX which returned pretty decent results compared to the stock STI TMIC, where are you running the heat exchanger? up in the front behind the radiator?

Nice work so far, jealous of your progress... august cant come soon enough!

Similar but not the same. The injector and fuel pump only run for 8 seconds with the engine off, key on. That way you can leave the key on for testing and not have any higher current devices running.

IF it's an atmospheric unit, I believe the best location is directly after the turbo close as possible to eliminate the harmonic issues.

if its a recirculating unit, Stock they put it AFTER the intercooler so as to not constantly heat the air by passing it through the turbo without cooling. This was one thing Subaru learned in the ver 1-4 models WRX, which had the BPV PRE intercooler.

The difference between the EFI and NON EFI for the 33 HR is one has an Aeromotive Stealth 340 pump in it for EFI and the NON EFI has only a pickup tube. We don't have a provision to use the Stock Assembly from the Mustang.

One thing that will be changing in the near future is all tanks will have a provision for EFI so that If you decide to run NON-EFI first then later on decide to run EFI you can simply upgrade and install our EFI System into the same tank without Needing to sell the old and purchase a new tank.

As for the 818 there will not be a NON EFI Option for obvious reasons.

Well i'm back at it after spending nearly every waking moment on the GRM car and took it for a spin today. It was soooo fricken cool to actually drive it!

GREAT!!!

Any reason why an elbow couldn't be used on the radiator to route the hose more flush. A quick weld and less chance of getting burned reaching in.

Looks awesome. cant wait to see some go cart action.

A silicone elbow cleans that up nicely. This is done on the GTM's upper radiator port.

I see that I'm going to have to put a disclaimer on every post that not every thing is finalized,

I already have the aluminum piping with a bleed port going in it for the upper and lower hoses. It was, "do I spend 2 hours cutting mandrel bends, TIG welding it together", or "do I spend 5 min and actually drive it around under its own power".... I chose B :D

I think plan B will be the way I go as well for some things. Get it assembled. For things that don't come apart easily, do it right the first time. For other things, put it together, then work on it slowly, make it a long term or winter project.

Uh E, you been smelling too much lithium polymer juice? That's my car, GRM is posting all the progress pics of their car on the GRM build thread and their website.

I see that I'm going to have to put a disclaimer on every post that not every thing is finalized, takes the fun out of posting though... :-( I have video, just don't know if I want to post it.

Wayne, thanks for the tip on not using a Tow Dolly...will blow out the center section, if I have said it correctly. It will blow up and produce some Very Uncool Parts. Valuable information that has not been addressed that I can find. Thanks, BC
