Looks like there will be quite a few cars at open house next year! Heck Wayne can build half a dozen at this pace.
Love the concavity of the rear wheel.
Are you going to paint it right away or get it on the street/track and make sure there are no issues?

Uh E, you been smelling too much lithium polymer juice? That's my car, GRM is posting all the progress pics of their car on the GRM build thread and their website.
No you said you had been working on the GRM car and took it for a spin. That's why I asked. I thought I knew what you meant but couldn't understand your "Alabama gramma." ;)

It's getting paint, any issues would be chassis related and have no impact on the body being painted or not.

Wayne-
You are cruising along, and the car looks fantastic!! All that, and you've been sharing your experience with the forum as well as the guys from GRM. You are the very definition of selflessness! I have been enjoying reading your posts, and wish you luck as you continue!!

The rear of the door sill looks quite high when paired with the Lotus seat. What are your thoughts for getting in and out of the seat? Easier than an Elise?

Is it necessary to run a staggered setup, or can you run 18"s up front?
Is there a bladder in either of the tanks?
The diagonal on the main hoop has quite a few 'kinks' in it. Does the R have a straight diagonal?
Looking awesome!
D
Wayne Presley

The main hoop has no kinks, the diagonals have no kinks, where is it you are talking about? The R has a different hoop than the S.
Mechie3
08-13-2013, 10:31 PM
I think he means how the side bars meet and form a vee instead of going directly from the rear hoop to the front dash.
No
I meant on Wayne's build how the main hoop's diagonal meets the horizontal square tubing.
I will post a pic to better explain.
Some racing bodies stipulate the diagonal has to be straight and on yours they were not. But, yours is an S and not an R. Maybe they are different.

The R's are different, they are wider and possibly taller on the main hoop.

Ok, finally got to work on my car today. Not much different from the last visit but the cooling system is completely devoid of air. I did a mod to the cooling system to automatically bleed all the air out on the first fill and FFR is working on a permanent bolt on solution to the issue. My way you have to drill and tap one hole. So with the cooling working great I strapped it on the dyno to break it in. Did all of the idle and light load running and short bursts to seat the rings. Shut it off and recheck the fluids, safety check everything and then let her rip. First short low boost pulls to 4500 rpm checking the AFR, boost level and timing. Then 5500, then 6500 rpm. Everything is great at 6 psi, so up to 8, then 10 and finally 12 psi. It made 264 RWHP and 261 RWTQ at 12 psi with 9.5 CR JE pistons, ported heads, stock cams, GT2860 turbo and full 3" exhaust. Very happy with how it runs, full boost at 3400 RPM, smooth idle.

To get to 8700 you'll need cams, rods, pistons, valve springs, titanium retainers to get there.

Yeah I figure with more aggressive cams it means a less torquey bottom end. I doubt you could have the best of both worlds.
And then a turbo that flows at 8000, which means it probably needs to kick in at higher rpm than another turbo that can die at 6500 if your redline is 6500 anyway. :)

I will get to 8600 Wayne, my ej207 ( jdm 2.0 sti) is stock and revs to roughly 8100 on a stock tune, I will get to around 8600, but the turbo stops around 8200. This is all stock jdm sti heads cams valves etc. It also makes great torque.

I am going to get 275-300whp and torque on a consecutive tune, that's more than enough and 230 whp should be a blast
I could have gone higher on the boost but a fresh motor and 6200 is where it made peak power. I like the 9.5 CR pistons make much better torque off boost and it made 40 more HP and 20 lb/ft more torque with 3 lbs less boost than the last 2.0 Subaru I tuned.

So you've actually increased CR compared to stock?

AVC's is basically VTEC, and 06 wrx up and all sti's have it. So they can have both pretty solidly except for really low end. But the new Subie engines will be direct injection and they will be pulling harder sooner.

Nice power for 12psi. At that level and some careful tuning you could probably get away with 89 octane. heck maybe regular.
My dynamic cylinder pressures are as high as a 8:1 CR motor making the same HP so still needs premium.
And what's the max you think it can take (after break-in)?
That size turbo will max out around 300-310 RWHP, the parts in the motor are good for 350.
So you've actually increased CR compared to stock?
Stock is 8.0, mine is 9.5 so yes I've increased the CR. Horsepower is a directly related to cylinder pressure given the same motor. Lets say a 250 flywheel HP motor 2.0L, you can get there naturally aspirated, or turbocharged. Either way you get there, the peak cylinder pressure is going to be the same at the same HP level. In the NA motor you get there by going with cams, head work and a high compression ratio to get enough air in to reach that peak cylinder pressure. Turbos force more air into the chamber so it takes less compressing to reach the same peak pressure, hence the lower CR pistons. The peak cylinder pressure is a combination of CR and boost level so you can go higher boost/lower CR or lower boost /higher CR. Now the caveat, the higher the boost to CR ratio, the more dramatic the difference between on boost and off boost power output. With less CR it will be making less HP to begin with then when it swings into full boost you get a huge HP difference. Couple that with a turbo that has to flow a lot to make the HP and you get a motor that has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Now up the higher CR motor it takes less boost to the the same cylinder pressure because the piston are providing a larger component of the peak cylinder pressures. Since the cylinder will have more HP off boost, the power difference to the 250 level will be lower and smoother. On a 8:1 CR motor it takes about 15 psi to make 225 RWHP, on the 9.5 CR motor it took 10.5 psi. I had the intercooler coupling pop off on the 8.0 motor on one run and it made a whopping 112 RWHP. Multiply that by the pressure ratio at 15 psi and you get the numbers it actually made ((15+14.7)/14.7)*112 = 226.28. Simple Physics :D

Gasket matched, ported the heads, 5 angle valve job, didn't trim the guides and removed the TGV's.

Vtec swiches to entirely different came lobes, bigger, instead of just changing the cam timming. Avcs is not all that great untill you can tune both intake and exhaust cams like the newer sti's. Even then they arnt the same, as honda k20's do both timming and bigger lobes.

Beat me to it... VTEC and AVCS are both VVT (variable valve timing) schemes, but quite different in function and implementation. My original comment was (hopefully clearly) a joke on Honda:

I think Wayne has done a great job of selecting components that work well together, creating a very drivable car. Great low end torque. Smaller turbo and higher compression greatly increases low speed drive-ability.

HE, that was an inside joke between Erik and me. On his turbo FFR cobra the internet people all said his turbo was too small, only made 575 RWHP and 689 RWTQ at 10 psi...Yeah, way too small and not enough HP for a 2400 lb car :D

08-29-2013, 11:42 AM
Are you following the same strategy with the H6 to limit the cylinder pressure to around 9.5 to 10 to 1 to maintain the drivability as well as the desired power/torque? You must have checked to see how much the EZ30 can take without modifying the internals. That should also limit the revs but still get the needed hp within those limits. This is really cool stuff! WEK.

Spray filler or yellow primer I see, or at least it looks that way.I plan on on blocking planels spray filling if needed block and than use a high build primer and block so it comes out really smooth. I can say I can sand and paint well, it is my thing more than the rest of the build lol. Although my build is going good, and I am having a lot of fun

Wayne, what's your current plan in terms of mods to the engine and accessories (hoses, exhaust and whatnot around) to fit and use that GTX?
Head gaskets, valves, retainers, guides, higher flow head and/or IM, etc.
You said no internals at the moment if I recall.
You already modified the coolant lines.
Maybe you already did other adjustments?

Erik, Erik, Erik,
A: Wayne doesn't sand, I know what I'm good at and body work isn't on the list... :D
B: This car is going to be in FFR's booth at SEMA, it has to be over the top perfect.
C: Only show quality paint jobs roll out of my shop so a quick low cost color change never crossed my mind.
I've been friends Erik for quite a while so know that I'm just poking fun at him and he'll poke back at me at some point. Erik, first beer is on me at SEMA.

I am curious about this as well after seeing the picture on that other build thread of the stock harness. It would be nice if the harness could deal with A/C or be an easy add on since I live in TX and am going to need it.

Maybe use something out of an EV car or this ??....http://www.grassrootsev.com/airconditioner.htm
I wouldn't want an AC pump on the motor with piping
Put it in the front next to the batt & add a little weight on the front axel
or move to Calif where the taxes & politicians are way to high.
One thing you got going is the motor is in the back, not like the roadster, 33, coupe- no forced heat into the cockpit

If you are looking at the APR GTC 200 they start at $750, the GTC 300 like on FFR's blue 818 R they are $1430
Frank818
09-05-2013, 12:12 PM
Right, so these are height adjustable, seems to. I didn't know that. I like the wing cuz it fits lower on the car, but I don't want a small lip on the rear trunk either. A low big wing is nice. Only thing is not sure how aerodynamically efficient they (low big wings) would be since AFAIK only the big FFR R wing and the new FFR S wing (I haven't see yet) have been flow tested.
Mechie3
09-05-2013, 01:02 PM
A knockoff carbon fiber Subaru s202 wing is easily and inexpensively obtained. Not as good at making down force as the aggressive Apr wings but is functional.
Frank818
09-05-2013, 01:22 PM
Yeah but to put some down force the entire car needs to flow air onto the wing.
If FFR tested their S wing and will offer it, what tells us a, say, APR GTC 200 wing would be better or worse in terms of down force, drag, top speed, etc.?
Actually, that may not be the thread to discuss about this. :) But anyway I am throwing out the question.

Agreed, mine won't have A/C, at least initially and it will suck in the summer. My point was that even without a top, A/C helps. Back on topic, awesome job Wayne! Can't wait to see what else you do for this community!

Was talking to Wayne this morning and he said that the website was a few days away from being updated, considering that his plate is pretty full right now it could be a bit longer, apparently there will be a section on just 818 parts that VCP's offers so I'm lookin forward to that.
What's the weight difference between the 2 engines, I don't know Subaru engine codes so I'm talkin about the 2.5 turbo compared to the turbo 6. What year was the donor car? Stock hp difference between the 2 engines? Do you expect to have to make changes to springs or set-up on the car (818S) to deal with the extra weight? What's everyone's opinion - is the 6 going to be the engine of choice, anyone else planning this?
I'm going to do mine with the 2.5 and as close to donor car as possible but that shifter is a must have & that IC looks sharp. I think I read that wind tunnel testing was done on the body is this the reason you went with an air to water IC as opposed to an air to air IC, is there a dead air flow space where the stock IC would mount is what I'm asking. Would a larger air to air IC have any effect in the stock location? Reason I ask is that it looks like the stock IC location might be out of the air flow for max cooling and if this entered in your choice to go to the air to water cooler? I have a turbo 911, the 930 and it's a popular upgrade to go to a very expensive larger IC but it's in the whale tail and gets lots of air, the poor man's upgrade is to stack 2 stock coolers and I wondered if this was an option with the 818 or would dead air flow negate the benefits of a bigger cooler?
I'm kinda glad (not really) I'm going to have to wait a bit, seems with everyone of these first build threads you see different idea's, products, and new after market stuff, plus the new top looks great, hope there's a hard top version when my kit gets built.
Wayne your car looks absolutely down town, can't wait to see it together.

Wow. That's a lot of questions!
What's the weight difference between the 2 engines?
I can't recall exactly, but it isn't very much. Certainly not enough to worry about.
Do you expect to have to make changes to springs or set-up on the car (818S) to deal with the extra weight?
Since the weight is very close to the same, I doubt it, but Wayne can weigh in! ;)
What year was the donor car? Stock hp difference between the 2 engines?
This will get your Subaru engine education off to a good start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Subaru_engines
One thing to keep in mind when comparing HP numbers is that the 6-cyl engines were N/A from the factory. Wayne is adding a turbo, so his will put out more HP than stock. The exact engine he has is an EZ30. What's important to note about the EZ engines in that they share the same exterior dimensions and engine mount points with the EJ series (which are used in the Impreza/WRX/STi). They also share the same transmission bolt pattern.
As far as the inter-cooler goes, I think there will be ways to make the stock unit effective where it sits. Air-to-water has some advantages, but comes with some drawbacks as well (weight, plumbing, space).
Wayne Presley
10-09-2013, 04:38 PM
The weights are in this or the 6 cylinder thread and not less than 15lbs vs the turbo 2.0 so no spring changes. I was really surprised at the weight of the stock flywheel/disc/pressure plate at 35 lbs...

I picked the orange and graphite but wanted a sliver divider. The painter wanted the blue divider and sprayed out a test panel and I would have said that I was only 75% on board with the blue. He painted the hood and I was 100% sold. It really sets off the car.
These 3 pics have no flash and it shows how much the silver looks depending on how the light hits it.

Wayne doesn't sand and my painter doesn't do wheels, too much time involved to make a buck at it. The last set he painted he charged $200 a wheel, said it wasn't enough to go through the work of sanding, masking and painting.

I can confirm that on a car that has nothing to do with the 818 or Subarus, using a completely different kit. I always get temps just a bit over ambient temps. And the more the ambient temp rises, the less that difference (AWIC temp minus AMBIENT temp). There is no way I will fit an air-to-air cooler, no matter the project I would be working on. Even if someone pays me to use an air-to-air. No way.

The single heat exchanger has about 35% more surface area than Erik's twins. Erik got his from me and trying out both to see which works best. I have not weighed the whole package yet.
