wow...really?? Nice entrance (2 post) ...and now for your next trick.... uncool.

Back on thread....

Wicked nice dash WAYNE!!!

What does 2 posts have to do with it. And I saw your answers wayne and people then asked after both of those posts. I think they got it was fabric, they were wondering what brand or where to get it. From the looks of it I would have assumed it was 3m vinyl wrap as well.

You second post was confrontational and defamatory. You obviously did not read the posts after the initial post where the dash was introduced and two posts after where I clearly stated it was fabric again. You then inferred that I was withholding information about the fabric and said I was ignoring people. That is and was completely incorrect then and now. For this you still owe me an apology.

Wayne, I'm blown away how awesome your car turned out. As a first time builder I'm sure mine won't be anywhere near this level, but I'm super encouraged by what you have shone the kit to be capable of. Thank you and all the early builders for sharing what is possible.

Wayne-

Your painter is very talented! That snake is outrageous.

However, your car is still better than that snake!

Please update us on SEMA, and some of the awesome comments you are going to receive.

Thanks for keeping us current on your amazing build. I wish my build could approach the level you established. You totally rock!

Regards,

Steve

Wayne I will admit, I am not the best communicator, and you know what, if you have said what it is than you bet I'm going to be apologizing to you!

BUT.......

I still don't see where you answered the other peoples question about the material. Wait, you know what, it's the communication thing again. Let me give an example.

I say: " Hey wayne what kind of car is that?"
You say: " An orange car buddy, any other questions"
I say: " Yes wayne I know its an orange car, but again my first question what kind of car is it"?
You say" " I already answered what kind of car it is in post 452, and 458....Its an orange car....and you owe me an apology since I already told you its an orange car."

Eh....you catching me yet?

Here, lets apply the same conversation to the carbon fiber fabric now:
I say: " Hey wayne what kind of carbon fiber is that on the dash?"
you say: " its fabric"
I say: "Yes wayne I know its fabric I saw that on your other post, but again my first question what kind of carbon fiber is that on the dash?"
You say" " I already answered what kind of dash it is in post 452, and 458....Its fabric....and you owe me an apology since I already told them its fabric."

You know. Heck. Maybe its me. Maybe I have a hard time reading. Maybe if I ask you what kind of car that is, "an orange car" should be a good enough answer. I guess what I think the other forum guys were looking for was: "hi factoryfive forum, the carbon fiber look dash is actually a fabric. It's sold by _________ that I picked up at ________, its about $___.__ per yard and I had my local interior person install it.

Instead I am sticking by my first statement. You don't seem to want to answer those guys questions about what the carbon fiber fabric is. Wait wait wait. HOLD ON. Maybe I am the idiot here. Is this stuff super popular and everyone should already know about the product and so an answer like "its fabric" is a good answer since the avg. joe should already know what it is. I'm off to google to find out how popular this stuff is. If it turns out it's really popular I will be back to offer an apology and come tune your car for free as an gesture of good faith at SEMA. :-)

Ok, quote the post where anyone asks what brand of fabric or where I got it....

BTW I found these in less than 15 seconds...

Everywhere you go and on every forum, there is always someone who has to have their knickers in a wad and is unhappy about something. Then they want to make sure everyone knows about it. They always feel justified in belaboring their point until every ounce of pain is shared by all.

Until now, the 818 section was void of such a person. Thank for volunteering to be that guy.

Now the forum is complete.

Awesome!

Now run along......

I think maybe the confusion was over whether it was carbon fiber fabric (aka: actual carbon fiber twill) or whether it was "carbon fiber" fabric (aka nylon woven to look like twill). He just wasn't very articulate in how he asked and rubbed the wrong way.

It looks tiny even compared to the Focus! The Audi looks like a whale in that company (nothing against Audi's, I drove our Avant this morning). The top of the 818 windshield is about even with the belt line of the Focus, which really points something out: If it's that small compared to a modern hatchback or sedan, imagine driving in traffic around SUV's... :(

Other cars? I don't see any other cars!

Seriously, the fender flares on the Aventador are hideous... they look like they came off a Wrangler and ruin the car for me. The only other interesting vehicle I can see there is the black Beemer next to the Audi, but can't really get a good view of anything other than a bit of the front end with a serious splitter.

Actually she's in the Guinness book for the only person to have 2 sets of identical twins born on the same day, just 10 years apart (currently 7 and 17 years old. One birthday, 4 cakes). Says the 17 year olds made her drop them off to school away and stay in the car not because they were embarrassed, because they were tired of the boys talking about how hot their mom was.

Awesome 818! I took several pictures of it at SEMA not knowing what it was (hadn't been to the Factory Five booth yet). I used to have an 07 WRX that I loved but sold it in April, now want to buy a roadster in the spring. After seeing the 818S with the soft convertible top I just may go this route and build one haha.

Wayne, as a kit newbie I'm wondering how more experienced builders do their interiors. I've fatmatted every surface and plan on covering with simple vinyl and carpet on the floor. I'm thinking between velcro where you need it removable and 3M spray adhesive where you don't it isn't very complicated. How much sound deadening do you usually use? (I asked Erik this same question on his thread)

Wayne Presley
11-16-2013, 09:24 AM
I do not use any sound deadening over what the carpet provides, the additional quietness provided is completely wasted in an open car. No one has ever gotten out of one of my cars and said anything other than how solid they feel. So the FatMat/LizardSkin/Dynamat only adds time, money and weight in my opinion to the overall finished product. I had a car audio and home theater business for 15 years in California and the deadeners do have their place and have used them extensively.
I get my glue from my local upholstery and use a cheap siphon spray gun from Lowe's to spray it in. The glue is head and shoulders better than 3M Super 77 or Hi-Strength 90. With this glue you spray both sides, let dry for 3-5 min depending on temp, it doesn't immediately stick to itself when you attempt to position it, lay it down then apply a little pressure and it sticks. And it doesn't peel up on the corners a week later.

Do you use foam to add a 3 dimension look to the vinyl that you apply?

Wayne Presley

Depends on the look you are going for, you can add 1/8" foam to puff it up or glue it straight down.

Wayne, the GRM car used stock 05+ seats and stock belts. Did you make some sort of bracket to adapt the seat belt brackets (sewn on) to the seat brackets? The holes are positioned too far from the bend to fit... Also I'm finding that the stock seat is so wide that the bolster makes it hard to retract the belt... did you observe this too?

No deadener expect on my firewall, which is not really needed either in an open car. I totally agree with Wayne.

Lizard skin also has a ceramic insulation product to provide heat insulation. Thoughts on if this would be useful to minimize heat transfer to the cockpit?

The holes are positioned too far from the bend to fit... Also I'm finding that the stock seat is so wide that the bolster makes it hard to retract the belt... did you observe this too? I ended up modifying the seat brackets for the GRM car since cut twice/measure once didn't work out too well for one of their guys. The seat belts drag if you have the seat leaned all the way back over the top of the seat belt slot. The seat belt can be a pain to get back out if you let it retract too far.

If Georgia beat Auburn, then Mizzou would only have to win 1 of our last 2 to win the east because of tiebreakers. Now if we loose 1 South Carolina wins the east. I was just giving you a hard time. Why 3"?
Why not 2.5"? Is it to gain more hp in the top end while sacrificing some in the low-mids?

I am ferociously debating with myself lol the use a 2.5" vs 3" (for a 2.5 to 3.0L engine).

I am ferociously debating with myself lol the use a 2.5" vs 3" (for a 2.5 to 3.0L engine).Frank, have you seen evidence that shows a 2.5" exhaust (post turbo) making more low end power than a 3" on a turbo car? I believe that in turbo applications, bigger is better everywhere. In other words, eliminating the exhaust after the turbo would produce the most power in all rpm ranges.

I hope I am not opening a huge can of worms since this is a debated topic, but I can't recall seeing any test results that back up the belief that a smaller exhaust will produce more power in lower RPM's.

Wayne's H6 is twin turbo, right?

Frank818
12-12-2013, 02:46 PM
Evan, yes I did. On my VW. Couple of years ago on the dyno I did some unofficial runs (not fully tuned) with a 3" exhaust and everywhere before full boost it wasn't as torquey as with a 2.5". Minimal changes I admit but I was curious to know other people's opinion here.

Then again, maybe if I had it tuned properly with the 2.5" and after with the 3", the latter may have produced more torque from 1 RPM to 6500 RPM. That's why I say unofficial runs. :)

It's possible it is engine dependent too, I don't know. I failed to find real evidences for either point of view, except for my old unofficial dyno runs.

Plz tell me I am wrong and 3" is better everywhere. But usually with cars there are always compromises somewhere.

D Clary
12-12-2013, 06:25 PM
I have a mustang 4cyl turbo. I have had several size exhaust from stock 2.25 to the current 3 inch. I do not have dyno numbers but the turbo spools much faster with less exhaust restriction. That been said, there needs to be additional tuning to take advantage of this. You need an ECM that you can set the fuel map to see an increase and not a loss.

Frank818
12-12-2013, 06:44 PM
Then I must assume my unfinished fuel tuning could be the culprit. I planed on 3" anyways cuz it matches my turbo outlet but now I plan even more. :)

The thing is, some say a "ridiculous" increase in diameter causes a negative effect. For example, a 4" exhaust on a 1.6L Civic. But this is not the thread for this discussion, I wonder if I will open one.

metalmaker12
12-12-2013, 08:18 PM
More air in or out, fuel, spark, timing changes within the ecu map can accommodate anything you try. From my experiences, a stock turbo wrx/Sti works well with an open bell mouth or divorced with 2.5" piping. 3" is ok too, just tends to raise torque curve slightly with similar tune parameters , but true benefit is achieved with a larger turbo.

From what I've read regarding normally aspirated engines, exhaust design does matter. Bigger is not always better. Wave propagation and back pressure (which is a good thing in proper quantity) affect engine power output and overall flow. I'm not as familiar with turbo engines, but I would imagine that the turbo provides back pressure, and effectively stops any wave propagation, making anything that comes after the turbo irrelevant (unless it's small enough to restrict flow).

Theoretically speaking, the best exhaust on a turbo would be a a short 6-10" long megaphone style tube that tapers approx 10- degrees from the turbine outlet.

Unless he's hidden something to us, it's "just" a single turbo. :)

GTX28, if I recall.

Wayne Presley
12-14-2013, 06:28 AM
It's a Precision PT5558 CEA single turbo. It has a 3" outlet and needed for a quick spool. The exhaust is so short on the 818 that there is not enough cooling to taper down to the 2.5" pipes. On a WRX the temps at the exhaust tips is significantly lower than the 818. Less temp = less volume, smaller pipe to flow the same mass of exhaust. My cobra has 2.5" outlets on the turbos but since they feed a supercharger spool up isn't an issue.

Frank818

I'm not as familiar with turbo engines, but I would imagine that the turbo provides back pressure, and effectively stops any wave propagation, making anything that comes after the turbo irrelevant (unless it's small enough to restrict flow).

Exactly. Pre-turbo on a turbo car this is very true still. You want to maximize pressure and flow rate going to the turbo which means having smooth transitions with minimal turbulence. The stock header and up-pipe setup on a subaru is actually pretty well designed for the unequal length design. Aftermarket headers will not give you much advantage over a stock header with a port matched crossover pipe. The stock up pipe is also something difficult to improve upon assuming it's catless.

Now, having unequal length headers in general isn't ideal for any turbo or non-turbo car because of wave/pulse interference but if you want to upgrade your exhaust on a subaru without destroying your boxer rumble, get your stock header port matched everywhere (all flanges) and then get the largest free-flowing exhaust post-turbo you can. Note that the stock header and up-pipe diameter is quite small compared to just about any aftermarket piece. It performs better because Iron works better for heat management for turbo applications and the smaller diameter piping has a better graduation in size than most aftermarket pieces to minimize pre-turbo turbulence. If you want to increase exhaust flow, start with a bigger turbine housing vis-a-vis a bigger turbo. Then you can upsize your header and up-pipe, you don't want the exhaust getting 'pinched' as it enters the turbo but you also don't want the exhaust flow to decompress as it enters the turbo either.

Post turbo, go as big as you can with the least number of bends.

At least that's how it's been explained to me, seems to work great as I get full boost on an 18g at 3400 rpm using a stock header and a catless up pipe and a combination of ebay, Cobb and Magnaflow 3'' turboback exhaust parts behind it.

What BrandonDrums said...^^ I wished this were moved to a separate thread as has been suggested. I have ulterior motives. ;)
I was just reading on this subject for quite a while today and my gleaned info mirrors this pretty well. I have several Full Race manifolds and the ID is not as big as some others, yet the SS wall thickness is impressive (I think Schedule 10). The smaller ID maintains the velocity, AFAIAC and helps with low RPM torque/faster spool. If the exhaust is unrestricted, as in a race car, then so much the better (for the top end).
After the turbo, you want no restrictions; hence some have a foot or less of pipe after the turbo.

Wayne Presley
12-27-2013, 08:09 AM
The equal length headers do change the sound and like any part on the motor there are compromises in one aspect or another. Big volume headers/pre turbo slows spool up but overall will allow a higher peak HP. Now if your turbo runs out of airflow before the peak flow of the exhaust, then you have given up spool up for no benefit. You really need to worry more about getting the turbo size right than look for something different in headers than stock at 325 RWHP or lower.

It was I think 26 this morning but gonna be in the 60s and sunny (if you trust the weatherman). I would almost perfer it to pick a temp and stay there so people stop getting sick. But yes I can't wait for spring because then I start building :-)

???? Optional pockets?

I have been running quick latches on my Evo since they debuted years ago.

They technically CAN be painted, however the clearance between the button and the housing is very very tight. I am planning on painting a set soon, but I will lightly turn down the button a few thousanths for clearance.

The only problem I have had on them, is that in cold weather they freeze. I had a battery die in cold weather, and had to buy two cups of McDonalds coffee to pour onto the latches to defrost them to open them.

The buckets ("pockets") are designed for flush mount of the pins. lets say you have two flat surfaces you want to use these on... The bucket rivets/screws to the lower surface to create a recess where the pin is located (along with a spring) in which the bottom of the latch can enter when latched together. A second benefit of the buckets (with the spring), is that when you push the button in, it releases and the spring pushes the latch away

Here it is with spring:

Do you think they could be painted to make them disappear?
Buy them anodized and they will readily take primer. Or have them powder-coated and skip the anodizing.
I know you said disappear, but they come in blue, black and red anodized. Might make for a nice accent since they will never really disappear. You can only get close to a spray paint color with powder-coat. Might be easier to match your body paint color to a powder-coat finished parts color.

Thanks, Wayne for the Quik-Latch suggestion and pics.

I do not think that I'll have to open the hood hardly ever so I made it a bolt on. I bonded plates on the hood and then made straps that attach in the nose opening and the back of the front wheel opening.

I bonded in a plate with a hood pin nut welded in on an angle so the pin would be normal to the area on the sides where the manual tells you to put the pin. then put the clip in from under the flat.

Wayne, I notice your omitting the rear strut tower cross-brace seems to have given you a lot more room to play around with rotated turbos and AWICs. Do you plan on adding something custom back in and if so, any plans to offer it for sale? Seems like the AWIC fits fine with the cross brace in place but a rotated turbo would not.

I'm going to have to build a new one for this car, I set the mounts in so the car could go to SEMA. Have not had time to go back and build a new one. The AWIC I sell fits the FFR brace. This car has a 6 cylinder and Precision Turbo so all the placements are unique to this car.

Nice! I will be interested to see what you think of the six speed vs the 5 for driving.

Wayne Presley
11-22-2016, 05:11 PM
The 6 speed shifts better than the 5 speed.

Anyway so it's been a long time coming but I had a couple of hurdles to overcome. First was I sold the 5 speed out of the car and had to get time to slide a 6 cylinder in. (BTW if anyone needs a SpeClutch that has literally 2 miles on it for a 5 speed I'll make you a deal). The second was the air assisted fuel injectors that are on the EZ30D, they are longer than the regular top feed injectors and have a skirt to seal the air assist area. So talking to a few manufactures I built up a set of Deatsche Works injectors with a different end seal. They fit perfectly and the 750cc versions in this car are at a 51% duty cycle at 320 RWHP. So installed the trans and injectors and got it on the dyno yesterday afternoon and was having a spark blow out above 3 psi. So I go to the autoparts store to get 1 heat range colder plugs and gap them to .028". Only one problem, no one makes a heat range colder and it only took an hour to track down any plug that might work. I put them in this morning and got busy on the dyno. Took about 90 minutes to get it dialed in on fuel but the 6 psi spring in the wastegate only made 4 psi. External wastegate is located behind the exhaust pipe and muffler so had to remove them and the wastegate to change the spring. I put in 10.5psi of springs and it made 8 psi. 3 more pulls and got 320 RWHP with 325 RWTQ. Sounds awesome!!! The 6 cylinder really sings, I'm glad I changed from the 4 cylinder just for the sound. A 2.0L making 300 RWHP took 18 PSI to get there and while it has the distinctive Subaru sound it's just not the same...

Sounds awesome!!! The 6 cylinder really sings, I'm glad I changed from the 4 cylinder just for the sound. A 2.0L making 300 RWHP took 18 PSI to get there and while it has the distinctive Subaru sound it's just not the same...

Wayne you know the rules, it ain't happened without a video. :)

I must admit, it's the best toy I ever bought
