I love this pic because it shows all the different shades of orange and gold in the paint. The silver can look bright, graphite and black depending on the angle of view.

Those XXR 527 wheels are great, but their price is so wide on the web. I haven't seen your (VCP) price but I have seen from 150 to over 600 a wheel for the same wheel 18x8.75. :)

Looks Great!! are you going to cut vents into the rear quarter panel? Can't wait to see the final product!

No cutouts there, I was going back and forth on them and decided against.

Wow that's crazy. What seats r those?

They are Lotus Elise seats, not cheap...

And the windshield frame is black, right? (not shown yet on these pix)

Front surround of the frame is orange and the back will be a metallic satin black.

Wayne, great job on layout, design, and color selection! Obviously a high bar has now been set

Can you elaborate on the paint prep and quality, as delivered, of the panels? To the eye the panels on my kit look very good. But what you see at this stage is very different from when you actually prime and block sand. Would you say that the panels require just a couple of prime coats and blocking, maybe a little filler here and there, or other? Pictures can never truly show a paint finish, and due to your car being prepped for show I'm sure more detail/prep was performed that what would be otherwise considered normal or even above normal. Any knowledge you can share would be appreciated. Will help with scheduling build time.

From manufacturing, packing, shipping, and storage I have only seen two very small chips in the gel coat. Im hoping minimal prep, sanding gets very tedious!!!!!

Thanks again for sharing with the rest of us.

The body's are in very good shape out of the mold and to get a really good paint job requires normal prep, primer and spraying. I knew early on in the build that having it in the SEMA show was on the table so it had to get a SEMA quality paint job. That means light filling, blocking, fitting, fitting, more fitting, priming, sanding, priming, wet sanding, painting the whole body white, then orange, then pearl, then clear, drying time, flat sanding the clear, laying out the graphics, painting the blue, drying, painting the graphite, then clear, drying, flat sanding the panels, more clear, drying, flat sand the clear again then buff to a high gloss. BTW the last cut and buff has not been done yet, all the shine you see is from the skill of the painter laying down some really smooth paint. If the car wasn't going to SEMA, I wouldn't spend the $ to cut and buff it, it's that good out of the gun.

P.S. Wayne, do you have pricing on the XXR wheels? Your fitment looks perfect; what width/offset/spacers did you end up with?

Frank818
10-18-2013, 01:24 PM
Wayne,

You got the panels fitted a few times I believe?

By any chance, what do you think the distance between the top of the crossbars (represented by the red arrows in the pic) and the inner side of the panel covering the bars could be? The panel is the one with the humps.

22571

What I am trying to figure out is the distance between the top of the bars and the inner side of the panel covering the bars.

Reason is, if I need more height for that potential VW engine (still gathering info at the moment), I would like to know how high I can push up these 2 crossbars shown by the red arrows.

tnx Wayne

I know you probably have all you can do to get your 818 ready for SEMA, but If you have a chance would you please post some pictures next to your Elise to get a sense of size comparison? Front side by side, rear view side by side and profile view end to end.

Thanks for setting the bar so high!

There are many people wrapping beautifully painted cars (though not as custom as Wayne's many of these are HIGH $$$$$$$ Super Cars) in white and black accents and they refer to this theme as "Storm Trooper"

A Stig white helmet, white racing suit or jacket(for daily driving) and a black HANS device would complete the look!

Do you have any ideas for how to keep paint on the inside the wheel wells (lower front of rocker panels) once it is on the road (after the show)? I noticed that the sand from track testing eroded some of the Blue paint on the 818R at FFR inside the fenders and exposed the red gel coat they used on that car. Maybe some black fiberglass r hard-coat black anodized aluminum covers?

I just started working on the door panels last night and they were not on the car for the pics. The dash and doors are wrapped with a black vinyl and black carbon weave fabric.

Wayne, just the average builder, don't tell us how long it takes you, it will just make us feel inferior.
Most of us measure 6 times, test fit 3 time, hesitate to cut anything, spend a weekend adjusting suspension, do brake lines 3 times, take the motor in and out 4 times.
Wayne can do all this in his sleep.

Ok, you can tell us, I'll just close my eyes.

I think a lot of it depends on how far you want to go with it. I have hours and hours spent cleaning up parts to better than brand new OEM. If I just unbolted hubs and bolted them onto an 818 I would have saved much time.

The car does go together very well (well, once FFR fixed the early issues) and with many builds before you, most troublesome spots have been identified with solutions documented.

Only 12-14 hours a day for the last 10 days getting an engine in a Lotus and finishing the 818 for SEMA and travelling to Savannah for 5 days for the Historic races there. I got the fabric 4 years ago for the X-terminator dash from my local upholstery and do not know the source or brand of the fabric.

Yes I did Frank, it's a vinyl fabric with CF texture. Nothing special, purchased at a local upholstery store.

I had the decal made. I was supposed to be in Savannah until Sunday night but we broke a rod in one of the Elises. I mean broke it just under the wrist pin then the rest of the rod buzz sawed the block, the cam tried to open the valves in to the now stationary piston breaking the rocker arm. It's a mess. So I loaded up and came home. Worked on the car today and it looks like it will still be Monday before I get the door panels in.

Put the car on the scales this morning, 1974 lbs with 3 gallons of gas. 40% front, 60% rear and 50/50 right/left with 50/50 cross weights.

That is very impressive! A turbo flat 6 under 2,000 lbs Wet Weight.

there is a de-powering the rack thread somewhere on this forum, pre-05 rack is one style, 05-07 is another

remove the end cap, push out the rack
remove the seal, you don't need to remove the whole piston
grease
reassemble
plug the two line ports

note: the fluid was not used for lubrication, the rack slides vs bushings on each end

Those are the new panels, the uphostery guy has some bad glue and he had to improvise. After SEMA the panels are going to be recovered, they looked great but the wouldn't stick on the fiberglass pockets. So he whipped out some panels that needed nearly no glue.

Nice job on the interior- love the dash and the steering column cover.

Could you answer a couple of questions?

What are the bars in front of the seat? They look like part of the frame?

Why the exposed aluminum panels in the lower door frame and upper door frame where the door latches? Just not quite completed for the evening or is it a design issue?

Maybe I'm not following what you mean on the door panels- these are the new panels, but not quite as they come from the factory?

Great color, great job on documenting the build. Appreciate the input!

I had the car vacuumed and started to fit the FFR stock cover panels and I wanted a little more coverage. Got out the poster paper, cut a template and transfered it to a sheet of aluminum, cut them out on the band saw, bent it in the brake and covered it with matching carpet. 20 minutes on the first and 10 on the second.

Labor aside (and knowing full well that I could never replicate what you've done anymore than a kindergartner with a crayon can copy Monet), do you have a handle of the approximate cost of the materials in a build this spectacular? Wayne-

I understand the headache, but I also have to say that you built one amazing machine! I know there are a very large number of us who would be proud to have built such an incredible car. I truly have run out of superlatives when describing your build. An extraordinary car built within a brief time period at a level few of us can achieve. Man, that's got to be worth something! I am envious.

Keep doing what you do!

Your time can not be valued the same way physical parts can.

Like my GTM build, I plan to build my first 818 as a budget build. I feel a well sorted 818 to be worth 25k without out going crazy. I do think a special one will get to the 40's. I will keep a spread sheet and keep track of what was spent. What Wayne has created is definitely special, money and time well spent.

Now the $8000 for paint is for a SEMA quality paint job. The guy doing the body work knew the car was going there, the guy doing the paint knew it was going there. If you look you'll notice the grills do not use the surrounds so that means the holes had to be cut perfectly, then the edges had to be filled, primed and sanded. That level of detail was done throughout the body work and priming. The body was hand wet sanded right before the paint was shot. The car was painted white before the orange was shot to seal the primer and provide an absolutely even canvas for the orange to lay on. Then the orange was put on, then the gold pearl followed by multiple coats of clear. The clear was let dry and on the panels with graphite and blue needed to be sprayed, they were wet sanded. The blue was layed out first, takes about an hour per panel to tape the perimeter to get the lines symmetrical. The blue was sprayed and let dry, then the edges were taped for the graphite. The graphite was sprayed, then air brushing the chevrons and then multiple coats of clear. The panel was wet sanded flat then 3 more coats of clear. The car was completely assembled and then brought back to the painter. The entire body was wet sanded, then buffed with compound, and finished with polish. The sand/buff/polish only took 10 hours due to how well he shot the clear in the first place.

So if you look the hood it has primer, 2 coats of white, 3 coats of orange, 2 coats of gold pearl, 3 coats of clear, flat sanded, 2 coats of blue, 2 coats of graphite, 3 coats of clear, flat sanded then 3 coats of clear, flat sanded, buffed and polished. That's 21 coats of paint on the hood, engine cover, trunk sides and tail. $8000 doesn't sound so bad when you look at it that way.
