Erik. Very excited to follow your build. As is everybody else here. Can you give us some Insight on how it's packed? Body mounted to chassis? A lot of guys are planning to pick there's up would be nice to know if you would recommend anything to take/build to help loading or strapping or what ever to make it easier for everybody down the road. Thx

Congrats Erik, I really look forward to your build. I get mine around Oct. 5. And am towing it back to Oak Park, Il. I hope to learn from your experience both towing and building. So here goes; we show horses and might might make it to Louisville this year, maybe I could drive a little farther south and have a look at your build? That's just a thought. Also, I am wondering how the body/chassis is crated or packed and if the whole thing could fit in a cleaned out 2 horse trailer with the dividers removed, and a huge tack room. I know you did some creative packing to carry two cars. I'm willing to be creative too. Have a good safe trip.

Well, that's interesting! My kit's production is also targeted for October 5. I'm not sure yet if I'll pick mine up, or have it delivered. But if I pick it up, I'll pretty much have to drive right past Oak Park, Illinois on my way to FFR. Maybe we would want to consider doing a caravan thing. A little built-in mutual road support. Something to think about, anyways......

The wheels are Enkei Raijins (18x8, 18x9.5), my car will have the Enkei Kojins 17x8, 18x9.5). I sell any of the Enkei wheels and get you a discount.

I'm currently choosing between some Konig Illusion with Blue or Silver Accents, Tenzo-R Concept 10 Matte Black, Tenzo-R Type M.V.1 Matte Black, and now thanks to this post the GW8 wheels from Enkei.... *Sigh* I can never seem to decide on what wheels I want on this dang car, no wheel seems to be able to "carry" the sexiness that this car brings!!

did anyone who attended the open house got any information regarding production ramp up and if they will be ahead of their plan given the investments made to the production line (ie. laser cutter etc)? I am scheduled for Nov 2013 production and after seen all the pictures and how happy Erik looks on the pictures taking possession of his kits, makes it harder to wait til Nov.

would 4 furniture dollies be easy way to unload directly from delivery service to concrete garage floor? I can use fork lift or pull it out with tractor or razor side by side, but imagine just man power enough. I plan to roll it to a 2 post lift & leave it there until done. I could use 4 post lift for all the underpannels etc.. But would rather use 2 post for most of the build. I have metal fabrication tables on wheels or could build cart, but not sure it would have any advantage. I guess I have time to ponder mine is Nov. Del date.

06-20-2013, 11:07 AM
If you use Stewart Transport, they'll put it right on your jack stands for you. They travel with a cart to move the chassis from the back of the truck to your garage. Now, if the truck has to park a long distance away then you might need to make some arrangements. :)

Hey Erik, nice to follow your trip! :)
Maybe it's too early to know, but do the fiberglass panels look pretty well cut? I know on the GTM there's quite some fiberglass work to do, like to make the windows fit, rear window and some other places where 2 panels are close from each other. I don't know if on the 818 at this stage (prehistoric loll) you can see if you'll need some fiberglass work.
Erik W. Treves
06-21-2013, 09:13 PM
The panels looked to be good enough to run just like they are after a clean and buff....having said that...I will not be leaving it "stock"...so we'll see.
metalmaker12
06-21-2013, 09:18 PM
The panels looked really good in terms of Fitup on the 818s. I would say you can get away with driving it around and it looks pretty good just buffed. I don't think there will be much figment issues, but we might run into some since it is hand laid and there is a percentage of error. I will be priming and painting my car.
Frank818
06-22-2013, 08:24 AM

Some progress today...didn't really start until noon...slow going getting up to speed and getting my head around to what will be done first.. already looking to modify a few areas...so that slowed things down...
also if you have some aftermarket front a-arm bushings like the whitelines I have...not only do you have to put the left one on the right BUT YOU HAVE TO FLIP THE BUSHING OVER...man I spent 1 hour trying to understand why the A-arm would not fit...
anyway...here is the little progress I made today...really wanted to have the front suspension done....

Hopefully those are just regular Whiteline replacement bushings? If those are the anti-lift kit bushings then you are likely changing FFRs suspension geometry. I bet that the team did their designing around the OEM geometry bushing.

They did use OEM bushings, but because I am bolting the bushing to the top of the mount opposed to from under and the thickness of the bushing housing..the delta is minimum if any...worst case the nose will dive a little more than stock..but in speaking with FFR, simply appling thin spacers I can dial in the dive correction if I don't like how the car reacts..
the take away from this .... yes you can use the bushings..it's a non-event in my book...moving on...

blueoval_bowtie_guy
06-24-2013, 04:00 PM
With the FFR kits, you put caulk with every seam of the aluminum panels and between the aluminum panels and the frame members. The caulk under the panels acts as a water seal when you put the rivets in and decrease the vibrations.

one thing to note, you NEED to break down your used front axles, keep the inner Cone for the Rear, bolt the OUTER cone into the Knuckle/bearing. this cone holds the bearing halves together and the bearing in the knuckle. If you don't have it, your first drive will end VERY badly.

I used Sharkhide on the aluminum panels, and other metals parts, on my roadster. When I sold it after 2 years the panels looked new and it was easy to clean but realize that I live in the Arizona desert with lots of heat and dust but no salty roads. I'm now coating 818 parts in Sharkhide and I'll use it on the panels when I get my kit in August.
Regarding insulation, look at EZCool. It's a foil backed foam that is used in NASCAR and it's very effective for heat and noise, plus it's MUCH lighter than other stuff.

Erik, I see from the photos you are building on car stands. I'll have to have a trolley/dolly because I'm short on build space nad will need to move it against a wall when I'm not working on it.
Can you please post the measurements front/back and side/side (and possibly a couple of photos) so I can get the trolly/dolly started?

to be honest I am kind of bummed out over this thread. I decided to hold out and was looking at building a cobra because I wasn't 100 percent sold on the looks. I think the problem I had at SEMA was it was red and thats my least favorite color. After look at your photos Erick i am kicking myself. I let a few donors go and now will have to wait over a year to have one built. I do agree that the wheels look awesome on it.

I don't think the final completed build will have the windshield raked that much.
If you look at the pictures from the open house, it isn't anywhere near that raked.

Thanks Jeff, yeah the FFR theme to the build it there and you get into that familiar rhythm of where ad how it goes together...nice and simple!
Yea I am keen to understand why the rake is so extreme on this build??? is it just a test fitting where the angle is very adjustable? to be honest it looks wrong that low.
You guys need to take a breath, seriously, I threw it all together so you could see it as a roller...only 2 of the 4 bolts holding the windshield actually have nuts on them and other 2 are just placed in there to keep the windshield from falling down... I needed the space in the garage and I was worried about breaking it since I am working kinda fast..so I figured the safest place for it was on the car. It's almost 7 am and I could be putting the motor in right now, but instead I am putting this fire out, I mean it's the 4th day of the build and only about 20 hours of actual build time....let me get through it and keep the "fire starting" to a minimum...PLEASE, else I will have to stop posting picture until I am done! ...lol...
What size tires did you go with. And I guess there's no clearance issues as it sits?
Bad guess... I have issues in the front and the back... BUT I am outside the box in what I am running so posting sizes is not what I am interested in doing right now until I resolve the issues...which are minor in my eyes...but to keep the fire starting to a minimum...let me figure it out first...The one thing I will say is that I am NOT following the size recommendations front or rear...so if you stay to what has been posted by Wayne from the testing thread and what we have from the open house, you will be fine...I am going for a specific look and like to understand the limits of the design.

Ok..off the soap box...
As the 5th day opens, we plan to have the motor in today... and for now it will be just laying in the motor mounts... I need to understand where it sits so I put the stand alone electrical and fuel injection system in , and some of the modifications I am doing as well (you'll have to wait for those...) once the motor is in ...going to start looking at the doors probably, but the big items will be hung in position...I need to figure out what I am going to do with the dash....I feel like I need some custom touches there...we'll see...mainly just want to get it together and get database started... working real close with Factory Five and Wayne...things are looking good for the rest of you!
stay tuned.....we'll get there...the car IS really cool and put together VERY well...fun to work on is an understatement!

It's almost unreal as to how quickly you're progressing through the build. Outstanding!
For me those wheels are the perfect match.

Well, geez...what's taking you so long? ;)
Are there any tips that you use to improve build speed without sacrificing quality? I've found in my projects, I start out good, but as I progress, I slowly stop putting tools away all the time and eventually I end up spending an hour just picking up because I can't find any of my tools anymore.

I'll be watching/waiting for this. All of my wheels are currently 18x9.5, so I'm likely to have problems. I'm holding off on buying news one quite yet until I can see what happens. I figure, worst case, I'll have a month where I'm waiting for the DMV to send me plates and what not where I can fiddle with wheels.
stay tuned.....we'll get there...the car IS really cool and put together VERY well...fun to work on is an understatement!
So you're saying that, like legos as a kid, I might just want to build it, look at it for a few days, then take it apart just so I can build it again?

Nice job on the fast progress and good selection of wheels. Appearance wise they fit the car very well.
It doesn't look like the S version will allow the use of harnesses because of how low the straight bar is across the back of the seats. Wonder if FFR would do somekind of middle ground rollbar. Meaning I want to run harnesses in the car but don't want the full cage because it will still see street time.

The rollbar on the R is higher, but from all the photos I've seen, the square frame crossmember to which you would attach a harness is the same on both R and S. The R has a low Kirkey seat, and perhaps Eric's seats are a bit higher which is throwing off your perspective. I'm sure Eric's seat position isn't final yet, and I doubt adding harneses to the S will be a problem. If your seat is too high for a harness, an add-on harness bar (as is often used in sedans) should work.
P.S. It's looking great, and I thought the extra windshield rake looked mean!

First order of business was to swap out injectors for the new turbo and then add some VeryCoolParts crank trigger for the stand alone EFI
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19251&d=1372471974
new turbo...
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19250&d=1372471972
after that picked up the motor and got it into position... I could not get enough leverage to pull the nut off the back of the tranny, although I proved in fact my LSD is working...lol... so I had some extra inner CV's and some bent control arms and welded up some breaker bars to hold both sides of the LSD using the frame as my back stop.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19252&d=1372471975
Pushed the engine all the way in until it touched the timing cover...it is a hit, drop down, push forward, drop down...repeat exercise from this point...
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19253&d=1372471976
then it hits the oil fill tube...so take that off FIRST!
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19254&d=1372471982
then the engine hoist hits the frame... I installed the floor jack under the car and added some lift to the back of the car to get the engine in some more.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19265&d=1372473069
Then the degas tank hits..so you can take all the bolts off and leave the hoses connected, you will just have to hold it back out of the way...

With the engine now in and my "breaker bars" resting on the frame, I now have enough leverage to break loose the nut

i have a question, how much of the stuff for the fuel system do we need off the donor? especially all the crap back by the fuel tank?
Just the fuel pump and wire connector. If your state is going to require the charcoal canister and valves, you may have to grab them.

excellent thanks for that. i just finished taking my donor apart all i had to do was remove the fuel tank and all the lines for a friend of mine, and wasnt sure how much of that crap we needed before i sold it to him.

Thanks for the updates Erik! Really enjoy keeping up with your progress. Each time I come, I have to reread a bit so I can start up again where I left off so I don't miss anything.

I saw Erik posted and got excited for a huge posting of pictures. :(
This thread and Waynes are my two favorites (for obvious reasons).

I'm with you. I'm not even building an 818, but I like looking at all of the progress pics. I expect to pull into work in a few days and see it sitting in the parking lot as fast as Erik is moving. I'm embarrased at the speed my MK4 build is moving after reading this thread.

Awesome to see progress being made an 818.
One questions (maybe getting ahead of myself). Is there, in your opinion, enough room for an external wastegate set up in that frame? I ask as this may be an solution (to those who think its an issue) for the smaller diameter exhaust adapter that would disrupt the exhaust flow of the internal wastegate. Or we can take your approach because it looks like you made a bell mouth DP to work.

Erik, the wiring harness did not come with the kit...I had my fill with the stock harness and since I am using a stand alone ECU...no need ....is it possible...absolutely...but "NOT IN MY HOUSE"....
my wife could sense the tension...

The wiring harness is what I hate most. lolll
No one sees the car progressing at that time, it's so small, but so mandatory too. lolll Unless you want to be Flintstones. lolll

so from what I can see so far is it safe for me to go ahead and toss out my old brackets? like the shield tat goes over the steering rack, transmissin, driveshaft and what not? I know I need the motor mounts and transmission mounts but not sure about the other shields/brackets :/
The wheels are Enkei Raijins (18x8, 18x9.5).
18 x 8.5 +45 offset
Can you please clarify what the width is of your front wheels? I'm watching your build thread very closely as my front wheel choice only comes 7.5" or 8.5" and your fitment issues (or lack thereof) is going to help me decide which I choose. Thanks!

Erik has said he won't post more wheel info until he is done and knows there aren't issues or that there are issues that can't be resolved (ie, he needs to change something).

I just looked at my invoice from Enkei and they are 18x8's on the front.

Uh, you didn't know what you were buying so that you had to look at your invoice?
I don't get that one. :)

I'm an Enkei dealer, Erik bought his Raijins from me, rori asked what size so I looked at my invoice to provide a correct answer. What's not to get?
