ok you have seen them from the side... +45 offset and 265/35/18 Federal Brand Tires with 10mm hub centric spacers.
The only other thing I had to do is run the upper trailing arm link rear complete inboard with the spacer doubled stacked..oh and 3 inch studs

Double stacked? So 20mm of spacers?
Erik W. Treves
08-10-2013, 05:32 PM
No.. The upper trailing arm has spacers or bushings if you like.. You move the arm inboard and double stack those.. 10mm hub spacer per side

Some quick progress today...decided enough messing around with the K-Tune shift..need to put it in the car...install was super easy...shift quality is great...course this is my first cable shift car and the tranny is band new.. I need a new shift knob... also placed the seat in the car to set positioning... I ended cutting out half of the foam out of the seat so I fit more comfortable... all in all pretty happy.

Lots of progress yesterday and today... Got pretty much ALL the front aluminum done...also completed the adjustment for the wheel and tire combination....
So disclaimer.....
Alignment is just quickly done and have not taken it out on the road yet....
Seems like it will work out...
Tire size is 235/40/18 ... this is about 1 inch more in diameter than spec.
Initially it rubbed everywhere so stay to spec unless you want this look and a ton of work. I had to make/cut and rebend the outside front firewall aluminum, rear and front fender liners. I am also losing about 1/8 to 1/4 turn at full lock, but this is with the rough alignment. Looks like I could message it some more, but I am going to call it done....also the ride height is at 5" to keep the suspension at correct angle... this means I have to add .5 inches to the rear as well... anyway here ya go...pics!!
stock panel on the left...mine on the right.. made the one tear drop slot go around the weld so it lay flat.

Good info, thanks Erik. I was hoping 1" bigger diameter would work, just have to decide if its worth the extra effort for me. Most of the wheels I'm really drawn to only came in 18s or larger, but the rubber gets so thin at 18". I wanted a little extra rubber to have sOmE ride quality, it would be nice if my wife would like to come along for a drive. I'll be watching to hear reports from all the first builds on their ride quality with different wheel/tire combos. I'm not expecting Lexus traits, but don't want to donate a kidney either, lol.

So the HEAT is back in the south! ... kinda slowed things down a bit in the garage. But I got done what I had planned.
Heat exchanger lines are now run from the back of the car to the front hat exchangers...I still have to hook up the driver's side, but that won't take but 20 minutes...

Here is the exit point right before it hits the exchanger.

Well happy sad today.....got the axles put together a went for a drive....3rd gear synchro is all done..pops out of third...throw out bearing pulled out of pressure plate and appears to be broken (nasioc.com bought used)... the VF52 turbo takes a LONG time to come into boost!.... anyway other than that....drives nice...still needs an alignment, but everything checks out fine...tranny is under warranty through Subaru and VeryCoolParts.com will hook me up with a new clutch...in the time being, I will throw my stock turbo back in to see if in fact the turbo is the issue...hope so...
here ya go...

5 psi a 3500, 11 psi at 5000 RPM...boost controller set to max boost.
That sounds extremely slow, but then again if you were only loging in first gear that could be right. Expect the values in 3rd gear to drop significantly. Also do you have the boost restrictor pill in the small 2" long boost line coming out of the turbo's compressor housing? Thats often a really easy part to over look.

Erik, how close are you to performance testing? Is it aligned? Any other mechanicals at all to do or are you REALLY ready for paint?
:)
Erik W. Treves
09-27-2013, 05:28 PM
Dave,
1. the alignment will be done tomorrow...
2. I just re-wrapped the engine harness so that is done.
3. I need to get some NPT caps for the manifold...
4. I need an air filter
5. Need to install the floor under the seats
6. need to install the seats all the way
7. need to install the seat belts
8. Need to get some more gas...went through 5 gallons just driving it around the block....a few times
I will probably get up to 3 done tomorrow and then I will COMPLETELY reinstall all the body panels to ensure the final fit is done since I am sanded down to 320 grit. Should make for some nice pictures...
Now that it is running great I need to run down to Wayne's and get the tune finished as well...need some time to do that....
I have been holding off doing a bunch of stuff since I was having engine issues...with that behind me I am really focused on paint. I'd say a couple of weeks at least...I need to pick up some speakers too...need tunes! With the gov't potentially shutting down next week I may get a lot of stuff done :D

Frank, I saw a video where some guys dyno tested the same engine using different waste gate dump methods and found no difference in power.
Frank818
09-27-2013, 05:55 PM
Power no, lag maybe. But I doubt you can actually feel it.
Some say it helps exhaust flow as the WG dumps in its own pipe, reducing pressure in the exhaust pipe, but I dunno.

We have a local cop in the sub-division, so I informed him of my intent...also we checked with every neighbor on the street prior to getting on the street to ensure that the kids were in school or at least inside...my sub-division is a dead-end as well...I had several people cheer me on from their doors as I went down the street cause everybody has been by the house to see the car and they knew I was getting close. It was actually pretty cool. In the end, was I wrong...yes...so I am not looking to get out of anything...Oct 27th is the next SCCA event, so I will trailer there to actually PLAY... assuming I am done sanding!

I've taken my f500 down the street. Don't do it often but after a full down to frame rebuild an autocross isn't where you want to find issues. As long as you're going slow and not being a tool bag you're less likely to grab attention. In the end you might have some explaining to do.

I just paid for a permit online ($28 IIRC) last time I needed to drive my unlicensed ute (XY Ford Falcon), it covers you for injuries to other people but not damage to objects (other cars, buildings etc) my insurance company covers damage to objects as long as I've got the permit. The permit enables you to drive it to get it repaired/ vehicle inspections and testing purposes, and is good for 48 hours. No plates are required unless it should have a set. So far I've used these maybe a dozen times and almost everytime I've passed a cop going the other way and they didn't even stop me, one time I passed them on the state highway as they were doing 5-10 below the limit and still did not get pulled over.

I thought you could have a VIN if you'd pay FFR like 100 bucks or something and they would provide you with a plate, number and everything. Or was that just for the chassis number and not the VIN? I don't know how VINs are actually produced and created.

VIN's are assigned by your local government (state, province, etc).
xatudor
10-04-2013, 12:19 AM
The permit I get is valid even if you don't have a VIN, you just have to supply an engine number. Different places different rules, no licence or inspection without an engineers report on stuff like beam and torsion testing and design rule requirements and exemptions.

In the USA the state issues the Vin. They get to that point from your FFR certificate of origin, kit and donor purchase taxes, proof of insurance and safety inspection. Once they do all that and have a Vin than they give you plates and a registration.
Btw this is Erik's thread not a Vin thread, "don't thread on me"

very nice Erik. I love the tilting, hinged hood and your rear "trunk" treatment. I'm surprised you didn't open up the front/side vents to feed your small radiators for the air/water IC.
I want to hinge my hood too and will look at adding some sort of reinforcing ribs underneath.
So that's the shape of the CF spoiler that I already paid for... :-)
Thanks for the update and the inputs re my suspension.

My rear spoiler isn't CF.. the heat exchangers are actually angled and I would say they fill better than 80% of the hole...I also will add some aluminum filler strips in there so the air will have no excuse but to go through the hole... thanks for all the great feedback...I am so done with doing body work!!!

Has anyone checked their state laws concerning a third tail light, I'm kinda overloaded with 818 info lately but I think I read someplace that when the Kit is registered in Canada its done as a new vehicle so it would need the third light, spoiler looks like the place for it

Not sure about Canada, but in the US the 3rd brake light is a requirement for automobile manufacturers. It is not required to be legal to drive on the road. This means it isn't required to legally register a vehicle.
Same for my roadster registered in "la belle province" Quebec!!! No need for the third brake light since it is registered has a an artisanal vehicule ( build by hand) so the law are differente for exemple no need of air bags or 3 point seat belts.

Hey tnx for the tips. :) I plan on calling TC and SAAQ to get all these rules, their documentation is unclear, or I don't have it all.
As for the 3rd brake light, I would still do it, cuz it's easier for the others behind (everyone, cuz no one will be in front of you :)) to see you are braking. Anything to avoid being rear ended I'll do it!

Assuming those are woofers from a component system, with tweeters mounted higher and a proper high order cross-over, it should/could sound great. There are lots of great systems with the woofers mounted low in kick panels like that. I'm glad to see that 6.5 inchers will fit there, it may be what I do, rather than in the door panel. Any car audio system is a compromise... given the limitations of the 818 interior, that location just might be the best we can do..
Erik W. Treves
10-14-2013, 07:10 AM
the speakers are 3 way...so that is all there is going to be. The side body panels will help close off the back of speaker...sound quality is good enough... between the motor being right behind my head, loud exhaust and the nature of an open top car, I am not too worried about spending a lot of time on the stereo... I have 5 3/4 inch speakers in the cobra running off an amp hooked to my phone and it's good enough........the cool thing is my head is Bluetooth, so it links to my phone and even has a mic for hands free communication..

I had a car stereo/home theater business for 15 years and an open car with the turbo inlet less than 18" from the passengers head, worrying about imaging in the 818 is a moot point once you turn the engine on.

Absolutely. Good point Wayne. However if you're going to try to listen while driving (it's going to take some watts for sure), or, just like playing your stereo at car events, making a basket is a great option. An easy way to do it is to use dynamat and form a circle over a small bucket and then make a series of cuts along the edges and flare them out and stick them to the sheet metal. Takes like 20 minutes!

Good point, and that was discussed on the Audio System Thread. I think Xusia would say all you need is... MOAR POWER!
Seeing the fit of the 6.5" makes me want to go with the same location, although I'll use a 2-way component with the tweeters in the door panel.

Ok, these 2 bars with the red arrow (tnx to Wallace for his pic).

I believe there is a fiberglass panel that covers them?
What I am trying to figure out is the distance between the top of the bars and the inner side of the panel covering the bars. EDIT The panel above the bars is the 2 humps panel.
For example, if you were to fit these bars higher or shape them in an arc shape, how high could you go before it hits the fiberglass panel?

Got the doors and front hood hooked back up. Added some grills...aligned the windshield so it should still work with the wiper, and got the mirrors painted and installed, Added the front splitter, still waiting on the my rivetnuts to install it for good....I still have to take the fenders back off to install the nose locating bolts....had a little issue with the paint on the front hood caused me to do some custom repairs.. came out ok...One of those nobody will see it but me...lol...
anyway..it was a cool day out but there was some sun...I know this probably showing off a bit...kinda felt weird about posting this, but been working so hard on the paint I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see all my hard work in the fall sun...past (I didn't paint the cobra) and present.... great day really...

How do you like the NRG Seats vs the Kirkey Seats in the Green Lantern? I am personally leaning toward the Kirkey seats in my 818 with the new big/tall gas tank FFR is developing right now. My tear down is not complete but my 818S has been home for a month.
Any jealousy brewing in the paddock?

spent hours cleaning the windshield...lol...it's like a slap in the face though when I turn on the wiper....:)
NOt sure I am going to keep these seats...they fit fine and are pretty comfortable, but the seat belt pass-throughs are too high...I guess if use the 3-point belts then I will keep them...I like the Kirkey in the Green Lantern, but getting in and out is "fun"...With the seat heater in the Kirkey, the seat is also very comfy. For the price of the Kirkey, if I was buying new, I would either go with a set of Sparcos or Momos from Wayne.
For the steering wheel - I used the stock spacers as called out in the manual...no mod for me here. I just run the wheel adjusted all the way down. Fit is good and the I can see the instruments clearly.

Erik, can you comment on the ground clearance of the street splitter at normal ride height? I notice that your driveway has a bit of a dip (similar to mine) Any issues with scraping? Do you think it's pratical as long as you're careful (taking speed bumps and dips slow and at an angle) I also have the street splitter and I'd hate to have to pull out ramps every time I want to get in and out of my driveway!
Erik W. Treves
11-03-2013, 10:33 AM
I haven't pulled it out of the driveway with the front splitter yet. I had the same concerns. Without the splitter I didn't scrape on the nose in or out the driveway. I DID however scrape the body right behind the front wheels going up my driveway. . I had not set ride height yet at that point so I will be looking at that hard once I get the car back out.

Erik, nice build thread. I'm sure you don't remember me but I have met you a few times here at Lowe. Been here since '97. Always loved your Cobra. I have always wanted to build one but the 818 is the direction I'm heading in now. Need to go out and meet Wayne and see how his 818 looks. Wouldn't mind seeing yours the next time you are down this way with it. BTW, Keith Eller and are are friends and worked together at AFS until I quit a few weeks to go teach M Model MTPC for S3. When do you think you might be down this way to East L.A. with the car?

Thanks for the info; good to know it seems OK without the splitter. The street version doesn't appear to come out nearly as far as the race, so it shouldn't decrease the approach angle too much.

11-03-2013, 07:37 PM
Is it me or the downward hill of your driveway or is it the suspension that has a bigger gap (tire vs fender) in the rear vs front?
Erik W. Treves
11-03-2013, 07:57 PM
3 things that are messing with you... First is that my tire selection is 1 inch more diameter than stock so I had to run 5inch ride height so the suspension geometry is still right. The second is the rear fender well is not in so you can see daylight in there making it look like the gap is huge. Also my drive way not only slopes down but away from you so there maybe some lean in the car. The rear was right at 5inchs maybe 5 1/4 as I expect the rear springs to settle some...I will also re-adjust when I corner weigh the car...nothing on the ride height is looked in yet since I still have the interior to put in and scale the car...I also haven't tried to get it out of the driveway yet, so a little high for me is good...i'd measure it again but it's on the stands so I can finish all those LITTLE things that seem like it will take a month to finish!
then again it could just be you :p:p

I'll check it again after SEMA and after I get it back down on the ground...I will make sure I do a better job of documenting this part.
FYI, I had to buy HIGH BEAM bulbs and all the connectors as well as the front turn light bulbs and sockets...the 02's don't have the right configuration for the Camry Head Lights. The local parts stores carry everything you need except the turn light sockets...I think the 06-07's are OK, but for the bug eye crowd, might start looking...I was going to install all my lights today...but no luck...no biggie though...just one of those things. I have to order some of that "top secret" carbon fiber dash treatment...now if I only knew where to find it.....hmmm....

So if I understand correctly, the Camry headlights don't actually come with lights and the lights from the bugeye years don't work. If I got that right, has anyone asked FFR about this? This sounds like something they are probably addressing...
Erik W. Treves
11-05-2013, 06:50 AM
My kit only came with low beam bulbs, and the bug eye connection did not appear to fit the camry headlight. I have not spoke with ffr about this as I just found out before heading out the door to SEMA.

love the exhaust location. I think I am going to set mine up similar but with another on the opposite side. Do you think there is any room to "Y" off your exhaust location and supply another exhaust on the opposite side of the transmission? The reason I ask is because I am thinking that I will have a dual setup, but only one will function at a time. The left side would be muffled and the right side would not be. In the "Y" section I would manufacturer a solenoid actuated flapper. I leave way to early in my neighborhood and would really piss some people off with the nice exhaust, so I want an option to flip a switch and run muffled when needed.

I think you could do a dual outlet setup...you would have to run the pipe over the tranny though...there simply isn't enough room behind the tranny. Anything is possible with the proper skills and vision...I actually was thinking about running over there for the wastegate dump.

So I moved on to finishing up..the lights are all done...well mostly... so I let the smoke out of the LED backup/turn bulbs...so I had to order 2 more from Summit... got those in and now one of the connectors provided has two of the pins missing...lol...course I have to find this out one part at a time....typical for me...too funny..good news is that they do all work now.... So lessoned learned for me is that the LED's don't tolerated being hooked up backwards... so I added this for future reference...or simply just hook the center pin to ground FIRST and then trial and error for amber and white....but for those like me who like pictures....

The smoke must have been from boiling off all the blinker fluid. Instead of buying new bulbs, you could have just added good synthetic fluid (http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=22); it doesn't boil away like the cheap stuff.

What seat heaters did you use in your Kirkey seats? Could be a season extender up here in the cold North. The Sparcos and Momos are interesting but right now I am leaning toward the Kirkeys along with the FFR big/tall gas tank for support and maximum leg room. Thanks for all the great insight!

There is a whole build thread including a video on the other forum, but the Kirkey seat was installed after. It really wasn't that hard. The heater install was very basic and came with instructions. As far as getting the heater mat into the cover, this too wasn't too bad. Some people actually just tape it to the aluminum and put the cover over the mat...done...I will tell you that Kirkey has redesigned their covers and it appears they are more robust and a lot better looking...still I think you could still sneak those mats into the cover. Very doable either way!

Eric, as a kit newbie I'm wondering how more experienced builders do their interiors. I've fatmatted every surface and plan on covering with simple vinyl and carpet on the floor. I'm thinking between velcro where you need it removable and 3M spray adhesive where you don't it isn't very complicated. How much sound deadening do you usually use?
Erik W. Treves
11-16-2013, 08:22 AM
Dan, I buy a premium carpet from Wayne and glue it in place...I don't use any type of sound deadening...adds too much weight and with the noise of the wind and engine I can't tell the difference....also in an open top car, WHEN you get stuck in the rain, the less stuff under the carpet the better IMO. It will dry out quicker. In my first car (cobra) , I put a sound deadener in it and 8 years later when I redid the interior and pulled up the carpet....the mold almost made me sick....yuk!

I was aware of the weight, which didn't bother me, but I wasn't aware of the other points, which give a different perspective. Now I think I'll only put deadening in the doors and between firewall and tank, provided there would be enough space between the alu sheets and tank.
tnx for that, Erik.
