Mike-
Knowing how much work went into that hatch, I KNOW how good it must feel to see it with color, and almost mounted!
I love seeing these new milestones over the last several weeks. It is truly refreshing reading your posts that are finally upbeat and dripping with anticipation!
I am really looking forward to reading your upcoming posts as she crosses the finish line. My very best to you and Pam in the new year!
I hope to get a chance to see Pandora in person after she is all done!

She's just about wrapped up. And everything is looking great. When I drive up to the shop and I walk in and I see what these guys have done, I find myself simply standing there with my jaw hanging open, and starring.
I'm sure that it makes me look pretty goofy, but that's alright. I am very happy with what they've done.

The calipers are going back on today. They've been installed and the brake lines have been re-filled and bled. Next step is to get the wheels back on and get her back on the ground.

The rotors have been sitting for a while, and need to be cleaned up a little, but a little WD40 will take care of the centers pretty quick, and the brake pads will scrub the brake surfaces before I get her home.

She really looks great. All the parts have been painted with 2 or 3 coats of base, and 4 coats of clear.
The car is pretty much done, except for being reassembled. She's going back together as we speak. We changed the reservoir for the RamLift system, to cure a hydraulic oil leak. The oil was added back, and any air bubbles were bled. And now she lifts right up. The diffuser goes back on next.
As I've said multiple times in the past, I named her Pandora for a good reason. (After Pandora's Box). Once the box was opened, evil was released. When one was put back, more would escape. My Pandora has lived up to her name, time and again. Anywhere that she could fight the process of making her as beautiful as we know how to, she has. And right up to the end, she's still playing the game.
I'm not going to give the details just yet, because she threw another wrench in the works, right here at the very end of the project. But nothing that Tony's skills can't overcome pretty quickly. She just thinks that she has won... And I guess the the truth is, that thanks to Tony, Rodney, Kevin, and Kenny, she has.

Mr Tucker. I have no doubt that our paths are going to cross very soon. I'm thinking of taking her to Pinehurst for the 2017 show, if they'll let me show her there. I don't think she would qualify to be judged, but they may let me display her somewhere near the Ferrari corridor. We shall see. If so, I'll let you know.

The Wiring around the engine bay was cleaned up. A thermostat / relay was installed to control the transaxle cooler & pump. Apparently the Tilton Pump doesn't like Cold or Cool transaxle oil to be moved through it. Therefore we're keeping the pump turned off until the oil reaches a warmer temp/ (180 or so).
I had to replace the pump, because my had burnt itself out, and I probably don't have 15 miles on the car. (From driving around my neighborhood to heat the fluids and check for leaks).

The Splitter, Rocker Extension Panels, the Diffuser, and the Rear Hatch vent cover have all been given a few coats of clear coat. and polished.
Pictures do not do them justice. When you stand next to it, you could swear that you could stick your hand 2 feet into it if you wanted to. It looks like perfectly still water with Carbon Fiber at the bottom.

When I saw this picture of the hatch, I wondered why it had to be re-sanded. And then I realized that what I was seeing was the reflection of clouds in the paint. Tony has made his first pass at cut & buff, and says that he plans to hit it again with a second round.
I told him that if he does that, it's going to "disappear" because it's so clear.

Finally, someone who gets it.... :)
The west side is a good run, but traffic can tend to back up without much warning; anytime and any day... The East side has less traffic and (I think) less Paparazzi idiots doing their best to run you off the road while they act upon their God-Given right to take pictures of your car.
But we'll just have to see if that's the case or not...

I took a leisurely drive up to Tony's shop to see how things were going with Pandora. And guess what... She's living up to her name yet again...
I won't go into details, but the paint booth started acting pretty weird, to the extent that Tony pulled and replaced all the filters and purged the air system, etc, etc.
He said that everything had worked perfectly since the day it was installed, and right up until he got the doors finished (2nd time) and ready to go back into booth.
I guess the DIVA wasn't ready for them to be done, so she started her crap again.
I told Tony not to stress and to go have a great weekend.
So Nope... Pandora's name will not be changed. She is, and always will be, "Pandora": The wicked B1tch of the South.
And as always, I mean that in the best possible way...

The Paint Finish Is Amazing!
Thank you guys. I know that I am saturating this build thread with pictures, but I am really proud of where this car is today compared to where it was 2 years ago. This has been a very slow process for me. I'm used to hitting a project, and being able to work it in a way that allows me to realize "milestones" and goals along the way. When the car is being worked on by Professionals, I've found that the best thing to do is step back, and let them be the pros. I provide my thoughts and vision, and they make it happen. In most cases, it takes longer to do it right the first time. In Pandora's case, we're taking the 2nd &/or 3rd swing, but this time the right way.
I like to show pictures as different things (milestones) happen. At this point, everything feels like a milestone. When Tony sends me pictures, I see how everything is coming together 1 piece at a time. There are many here who have told me that they want to see them, so I post what I have. But it also makes the process seem to take much longer that it really is. My choices have dictated the amount of time that this has taken to complete. But it was a trade off that I was willing to make in order to have the right people doing the work that I was certain would get me to my goal.
And we are.
Thank you again for the huge support that you and everyone here have always given me. This "family" is what has given me the desire to make this happen.
Take care,
Mike

So You Seek The Grail!
Steve
Hi Steve.
I'm not sure that I consider myself worthy of the Grail. But I try to be. I am extremely proud of how Pandora is finishing out. And I'm very happy with the work that Tony and the guys have done.
This is the first set of "assembled body" pictures that I've seen in natural sunlight. All I can say it that I literally could not speak for a few minutes when I saw her. Just unbelievable. After all this time I was a little overwhelmed. And then he just kept sending more and more...
Fortunately, I didn't have any meetings or presentations to deal with today.
So I guess in my small world, yes... I think we sought and achieved our version of the "Grail".
I can say with certainty, that I could not be any more happy.

The hatch is complete, including the rubber seals. Tony has gone way beyond in order to make sure that the transition from roof to hatch is seamless. I think that you can see that it absolutely is. The gaps are about as nice as anyone could make them.
I've always been a fan of Chip Foose. I've always thought that he was the MAN... Hands down. But I believe we are witnessing a new car Guru rising in the Eastern US.
As well, I'd like to send my sincere thanks to Jason Cecil for designing and creating this hatch. He worked with me to design something that would vent the heat, and look great doing it. It vents the heat beautifully, and looks freakin' awesome doing it.
To be completely honest, I only have two words right now to describe how I feel about what I'm seeing...
"Thank you".

There is just enough of a gap between the trailing edge of the carbon fiber cover and the "glass" to vent the heat from the engine bay very quickly.
It's lucky for me that Tony is in a picture taking mood; so I'll keep posting them.
Videos are nice too!

I though that the headlight covers were taped to keep them from shifting while the bonding agent cured...
As it turns out, that were taped because they have not been bonded yet.
The Mirrors and the headlight covers will have to wait until the body gets its final cut and buff: Then she'll get a coat of wax.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_3209_zpsfjhpuau6.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_3209_zpsfjhpuau6.jpg.html)
The gives a little better view of the vent cover at the top of the hatch "glass".
We ran her today and let the temp climb up a bit. When we raised the hatch, there really wasn't very much heat in the engine bay at all.
The upper vent and the new mesh really did their job well.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_3207_zpscoij9tni.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_3207_zpscoij9tni.jpg.html)
I wanted to show the hatch vent, but I'm not sure that it really shows well in the picture.
The car is so shiny that it's hard to differentiate very much between panels.
But you can see how the CF cover provides just enough room for the heat to escape the top of the hatch.

I've never actually seen her in the sun, with this new paint. I've seen Pictures of Parts out in the sun. And then later I saw pictures of the car, without the doors and hatch out in the sun. And then last week I was finally able to see her with her doors and hatch, out in the sun.
So when I walked into the shop yesterday afternoon, Tony had sort of a pseudo unveiling for me. She was covered in plastic and taped down so most of the shop dust would be kept out. When that plastic came off, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. So Tony asked Kevin to back her out.

And sure enough I went straight into my Gomer Pyle look... Blank stare... Jaw dropped to the floor... Couldn't utter an intelligent sound for a while...

We've all heard people say that "Pictures don't really do it justice"... That's the case with Pandora as well.
In the pictures, she looks great. In person, she just doesn't look real. I couldn't believe that it was my car.
And she looks exactly as I have always seen her in my minds eye.

I really like the way the new style of mesh looks. I think it gave it more of an OEM look and feel.

I am hoping to have a representative from the NC State Patrol / (NCDOT) come in and re-perform the inspection to get the registration part of this puzzle completed. (This had been done before, when the car was at Jeff Collin's shop). As soon as we get that squared away, we'll be making a few shakedown runs to make sure that we don't have any engine, brakes, or hydraulic lift leaks, and that the cooling system stays constant. It's getting very close, and I am getting very excited about the prospect.
It looks oem to me. It changes the rear view of the car for the better, no more double hump roofline. Looking good, won't be long now.
Thank you Jason. The car took on a whole new feel when I saw the painted and completed hatch, installed. It matches the body lines very nicely, and it's 100% functional. It does what it is designed to do. It dissipates heat quickly and completely. Tony and Kevin really worked the hatch and the body to make sure that everything fit, and was perfectly flush with all panels. Thanks!

Wow...! That sure put a smile on my face. I mean, Wow...! Thank you.
The goal is to make sure that the garage space is as nice as the finished product that Pandora is turning out to be. But yes, she'll be relegated to the garage instead of the living room. LOL.
I really appreciate the support here. I really think that, besides the fact that I'm just stubborn (according to my wife), the people here have really made it easy to get through the low spots, and celebrate the highs. And there have been a lot of both along the way. I said for a while that I was done with custom builds. But I think that I have a better educated feel for the process, and can see diving into another fairly soon. I have 3 projects that I would like to take on, but will likely be one at a time.
We'll see.
Thank you guys. I appreciate it, and I know that Tony, Kevin, Rodney, and Kenny do also.

Hi Steve,
I have always been a huge fan of the Daytona Coupe, and the Type 65. Especially the new Generation version... I could definitely see that. It's definitely on the list of cars that will be built.
But I also have plans for a full on custom 62 Corvette (resto-mod). And I want to have our 1930 Model-A ford completely restored: top to bottom, inside and out. So Tony's going to be kept busy, if I have my way.

I had a brief conversation with Tony earlier. He said that he was in the process of doing the final buff of the doors, and then reassemble them. Mirrors, Glass, Windows, and then re-hang them for the LAST time.
We're still waiting for the roll-bar "halo" cover and a-pillar covers to be finished (adjusted) and re-installed, so the Windshield can be re-installed. Then the areas around the windshield can be final buffed without getting the interior splashed with polishing compound.
I guess the rear rear of the car (from the doors back) can be final buff and polished before the windshield goes back in. We'll see how it all works out, But the build seems to be winding down. That's a good thing.
Stay tuned...

I went into the shop this Friday to see the progress.
Still waiting for the halo cover to be finished by Steve at The Custom Stitching Co. We can't install the windshield until the halo is done.
Steve told Tony that he will have it done this week. So she's waiting.
When I walked by, the window seals sort of called out to me. I really noticed how well Tony designed the windows, seals, etc.
So you know me... I had to take a couple of pictures.
Very nice fit.

With Pandora finishing up, Tony has another cool project that he's about to start up. If you've watched Gearz (Stacey David) recently, you've probably noticed a "Cheetah" sitting in the background, that he's building. We'll he has asked Tony and the guys to do the body work and paint. They brought it back to the shop last weekend. At this point, I'm not sure what the color and overall look is going to be. But then again, it's a Gearz project, so I'm sure it will be completely over the top.
I'll post a couple of pictures soon.

Hello all. Please relax.
To begin with, Yes Mike, I was Pissed, and without apology.
I may have over reacted a bit. But in my defense, I did say in my post that I don't feel that I have any right to dictate to someone else what they can or can't do, or should or should not do. (Actually what I said was, "Who am I tell anyone what color their car should be...").
I've gone way out of my way to make this car as unique as I am able to, and at great expense; (at least to me). And to see it being somewhat duplicated, before it has even left the shop, just hit me wrong.
If that offends anyone, ruffles any feathers, or otherwise makes me seem childish, then Oh well... Sue me. I can't help the way I felt about it.
But I suppose I could have waited to post anything about it. Not sure it would have made much difference though.
However, having said that; It it looks like you're going to have a beautiful car Eric, and I'm glad for you. These cars deserve to look as nice as we can possibly make them.

I think Mike figured there would be imitators, but didn't figure on instantaneous! Did Tony's shop paint both? Did Tony tell you that Pandora was being cloned (to some degree)?
The Stig
02-08-2017, 02:55 PM
Yes Tony painted both cars.
After speaking with Eric, a while back, in regard to whether I would recommend a different shop that he was talking to, I told him that there was a reason that my car is where it is, and not at the other shop. Then I gave him the contact info for him to call Tony.
Obviously with two GTM's in the shop, Tony and I talked about this possibility, and I told him that while I can't prevent anyone from painting their car any color they want, I would prefer that the two car not be painted the same color back to back. When he saw my car come out of the booth, He told tony that he wanted the same color. Tony pushed back, and later told me that they wouldn't be the same.
Personally, I couldn't care less what color he chooses. I just didn't expect to see it pretty much duplicated (paint) before mine is even finished. But, at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter.
Again, it just struck me in a strange way that I hadn't expected, and I reacted. As a result, More attention has been given to this than should have been. And that's my fault.
I'm really not this petty about things. Although, Tony told me recently that Pandora has been his most "Demanding" project to date, and that I have been his most "Demanding" customer. So who knew? Maybe I am, and just didn't realize it... Although I thought that I've been pretty patient to this point, except for a couple of periods of what I consider to be normal frustration... Go figure. March will make it 2 years.
He says that there is a difference in the colors of the two cars that you don't see in pictures... Maybe. But to me they looked pretty much identical.
Either way, It looks like the guys are doing a good job on it.
Good for him.

Pandora build (Reboot).
I stopped into the shop to see the progress of Pandora. It was good to see what was being done.
Tony's hands are somewhat tied in terms of being able to finish her up right now.
I sent a "final" punch-list of items that I feel need to be done in order to get everything wrapped up. This list was taped to the front fender.
So I know that effort is being made towards finishing.
One of the items on the "critical path" is getting the "halo" and A-pillar covers adjusted and recovered, and then reinstalled. Then the windshield can be put back in. Then the car can be buffed for the last time.
So the car is pretty much "done", but we have to wait for Steve Kurzman to finish this "fix". I stopped by Steve's shop after I left Tony's shop. The door was locked, and there were no cars. So I called him to get an update. When I called him yesterday, the first ring didn't complete before the call went to voice-mail. Steve's shop is closed, while he attends a show on Columbus Oh, with a "high-profile" customer... He will be back in 10 days on 02/20/2017. My parts will be his 1st priority when he gets back.
Then my car can be finished.
Looking forward to that.

Lots of positive news on the Pandora front...
The halo should be finished in a couple of days and back in the car. We'll see how that works out.
I bought a GTM car cover a few years ago... But I've never had her to the point where I wanted to put it on her.
But since we had to block the dust from the interior while we wait for the halo and the windshield, I thought it was time to bring it out of the box.
Then we put my outdoor cover for my CLS over it. That should keep everything clean until Steve finally gets finished with the halo.
If I can get a picture of her with her new red dress, I'll post it. I've never seen it.

I know that I tend to post at "information overload', but... I'm pretty excited. What can I say...?
Tony sent a note to let me know that Steve came to the shop, with the roll bar halo for a test fit. When I asked how it went, he told me that it fit "PERFECTLY"; and that he estimates that he estimates a 1-1/2" to 2" gain in range of vision. To me that is excellent news at multiple levels.
1) I'll be able to see through the windshield much easier.
2) The windshield will be back in the car on Friday, which means that the final cut & buff will be taken care of on Friday.
3) Final assembly will be taken care of very soon. (Monday to Tuesday)
I'm assuming that Pandora will be done next week. I am really happy that we are this close. And... I am proud of the work that Tony and the Guys have done.
I would have never dreamed that my car would finish up as nicely as she has.
Thanks,
Mike

Great news Mike.
I have a real question for you, how are your tires? How old are they? I have the same concerns about the tires that came with my kit. The have zero miles on them, but they are probably 8 years old. I'm concerned about how they will perform, to the extent that I will probably put new tires on when I start driving mine.
With the money you have in your body, make sure you maximize your grip, $1500 in tires is nothing, relatively.

I've had the exact same concern for a while, and I fully expect to need to replace them due to "flat spots" from sitting in one place for so long on multiple occasions.
So a new set of Michelin PS (somethings) may be in the cards.
If not, it will be a nice surprise. It'll be obvious enough as soon as I get it out on a smooth hwy, which is only about 3 minutes from Tony's shop.
As always, We'll see.

We took Pandora out to check the brakes and check for leaks.

This car is crazy fast...! And the brakes work really well. 60 to 0, step on the brakes and she tracked absolutely straight ahead.
Very nice pedal feel. I felt very comfortable with it.
She started spitting coolant from the rear overflow catch tank. The temp came up a bit. Looks like we may need to purge some air from the coolant lines again. I think everything will be fine once we've taken care of that once and for all.
I'm re-learning the feel of the clutch, and finding the release point for shifting again.
Man this car is fun.

The doors still need to be reassembled. Windows, Mirrors, Glass, Door Panels, etc...
We were delayed quite a bit while we waited for the roll bar covers to be corrected. But at least now we're moving forward again.
The Final Cut & Buff should be done this coming week. And then a much more "gentle" leak check, and heat cycle of the engine and transmission will take place over a little longer period of time.

I learned yesterday that one of the things that I've been waiting on SINCE THANKSGIVING 2016, will eventually have to be done for yet a 3rd time: By someone else this time. What a shame.

I have only ever had ONE person say that they had issues with the upgraded header tank setup. IIRC you are running the MRS setup? If so, did you run the engine thru a couple of heat cycles to purge the air? Did you manually purge the air from the radiator? I can't remember, are you still running the front tank as well?

Hi Mike,
I don't think that it's an issue with the header tank set up. I think that there was still air in the lines that got trapped.
We thought we had it corrected, since it wasn't running hot when the car idled for a while.
So we're going to purge the coolant system with a vacuum and refill with new coolant.
I do have the tank up front as well. So there really shouldn't be any place for air to get trapped.
I guess we'll see.

The good thing about running the front tank is that it gives the radiator somewhere to bleed any air to. The bad part is that there is a LOT of 1/4 inch line between the front tank and the engine that is hard to bleed and is a good place for air to become trapped, only showing up in the system at some later point. It is for this reason that I highly recommend that the front tank not be used.

Mike,
The rear Canton Tank helps to bleed air from the engine block and heads. The lines to the radiator run directly to the in/out ports of the water pump. As well the re-circulation to the heater core runs from the water pump, to the core, and back to the water pump. In my mind, if it's trapping air, this might be where. (I don't have the lines running from the heater core to the front overflow tank).
This is the sequence that I used to purge the air from the system, and afterwards I never had any trouble with it over heating.
The problem returned while it was at shop where I was being charged for wiring work that didn't happen... At the time I didn't have a dedicated overflow tank on the radiator. I had a hose that was running into a Gatorade bottle. I asked him to check it every 3 or 4 days, and pour the coolant that accumulated back into the Canton Tank. He didn't and the system drained itself low enough to allow air back into it.
- Open the 1/4 over flow from the radiator. (Upper right corner).
- Then I lift the rear of the car about 24" (didn't have the splitter on at the time), and I think that's what has to happen to burp the heater core if you don't have it plumbed to the the front over flow as a pass-through air bleed.
- Start to fill the coolant system until the Radiator over flow started to overflow.
- Cap the Radiator over flow line.
- Then continued to fill until the front head vents begin to overflow.
- Cap the front vents.
- Then continue to fill, until the rear head vents start to overflow.
- Cap the rear vents.
Then fill until you can see the coolant in the tank.
As far as you can tell, am I missing anything?
If I can get the system purged again, I don't think I'll need to run the pass through lines from the heater core to the front overflow tank.
If not, then I think that would need to be done to fix it.
As usual, we'll see.

I would just suggest that you heat cycle the system a couple/few times and check the rear tank water level each time. Add water as needed. It should settle to where the water level is about thumb depth below the radiator cap in the rear tank. As I have explained, the water has to expand somewhat with heat, so there needs to either be an air pocket at the top of the header tank in the rear, or you need to run a recovery tank. Either is acceptable and will work just fine, but the recovery tank setup is the cleaner and more OEM way of doing it.

I had planned to take Pandora to Caffeine and Octane in Jekyll Island for the first public unveiling.
An unfortunate event happened last week that keeps me from being able to attend. (At least as far as I know right now).
Tony has indicated that he would be interested in taking her himself and presenting her, in order to show the ability of his shop. I told him that I would be fine with that, because I think that he and his guys deserve recognition for their work, outside of this forum.
My personal "favorite car guy", Chip Foose, will be there. So I'm pretty bummed that I'll miss being able to meet him.
I noticed that based on the entrants list, it looks like Bill Phillips SLC will be there as well.
So if you're in the Jekyll Island area, and you want to get a look at Pandora, she'll be there along with a beautifully done SLC. (Both cars done by Charlotte Speed Shop).
If this changes for some reason and we pull her from the show all together, I'll let you know.
She has a couple of very nice shows coming up soon that I'll get to be a part of, so it is what it is...

Over the past couple days I have read through your build thread. I am a little newer to this forum, really just been on here a few months consistently. I have caught wind that you have been through a lot with your car, but never realized how bad it was at times. The guy who charged you $2500 for a POS wiring job...I would have told him to get lost, what a con. Sorry your first round of bodywork turned out so amateur, I thought that shop had a good reputation.
I really enjoyed watching your interior take shape, what a work of art!
So I'm reading about you taking her in for more bodywork with a Tony in mid-2015, and I'm like "how many Tony's do bodywork in Charlotte?". Then I keep reading and realize your car has been in the shop since then??
I can see why you have been "over" this build at times, I would have been too. I think it is good that you are seeing this through to completion.
Congratulations on meeting recent goals, great to see the finish line in sight!

Thank you. I really appreciate it: more than you know.
It feels so good to be finishing her up. Yes, Pandora has been at Tony's shop for 2 years this month. But mainly because I wanted her to be. We were able to take her from "The GTM" to "Pandora", by taking our time and making absolutely sure that everything was done exactly as it should & needed to be. The results sure look good to me. And I guess that's all that really matters. And yes, for the most part, I'm still "over it". I'm over the time it has taken to have to re-do things a number of times, and re-visit frustrations that I thought had been resolved.
I've stated a couple of times that there are specific reasons as to why I post as much information about this build that I do. I found that I needed a true historical account of things that have taken place along the way. The history of how "the GTM" became "PANDORA".
My GTM build History Lesson... It's not pretty.
One of the reasons that I post as much detail as possible, is to try to make as many people as possible aware of the absolute crap that is dished out to people like us by automotive shops, just because they truly 100% learned that they can and get away with it.
At the end of the first round of the GTM's paint & body, I was presented with an invoice that was astronomically higher than what we had "agreed" to. I had asked repeatedly to be kept aware of the balance as we went, but never got it. When I did, it was obvious to me that something was very wrong. I figured that I owed around 10,000, and was given an invoice in excess of 40,000.
I felt that I was not able to aggressively pursue them, because my car and registration paperwork were being held for "ransom" as they tried to charge me an insane amount of money for work that they said had been done, but wasn't. I ended up telling him that there was no way in hell that I would ever pay him the amount that he was trying to charge, and that I would let is sit in his shop and rot before I did. After Dave Smith got involved, the price was reduced, but I still ended up paying 25,000 on top of the 14,000 that I had already paid for the body and paint. So around $40,000 in total went to that shop, because they knew that they could rip me off, and did. (It would have been closer to $60k). So when people call me or send me PM's asking whether or not I would provide a reference for that company, I ask them to call me. I tell them that I will not give a reference for them (or anyone else), but I would be happy to provide great detail in terms of what I went through there. And from there I tell them to decide for themselves where they want to send their car to have work done. That seems to work much better.
When I finally got my car and registration paperwork back, I had become 100% shell shocked in terms of allowing anyone outside of my garage to do any work on it what so ever... So I started documenting... everything. And I started Vetting everyone. This process added quite a bit of time to my build. But at this point I didn't care. So when the math clicks in people's minds as they read this and they see that 7+ years have gone into this build, I simply nod my head and say, "Yep". It sure has.
Then came Corty Stone. Corty is a Factory Five Cobra owner/builder.
After speaking with him, and explaining the work that I needed to have re-done, and why, He said that he couldn't believe that the previous shop would do this sort of thing, and promised that he would fix the wiring mess, and that he had my back.
He didn't fix it; if anything he made it worse. And the only thing that he did to my back was put a knife in it. He let the car sit outside in the rain, when I specifically asked him not put it outside, period. I also asked him to keep an eye on the radiator overflow catch bottle, and to simply pour the coolant back into the Canton Header tank. He didn't, and the cooling system got air back into the heads and radiator. Then when it was cranked, the air moved through the system and got stuck again. Just two things that I asked of him. And once again I was ignored. I was in Ohio when my car was brought back to my house, so I had no way of knowing that he had not done what I was paying for. When I got home, and had a chance to see it, I was furious. My assumption is that the only reason he didn't try to charge me more for the "wiring job" was because he knew that if he did, I could get better attention from attorneys to go after him for not doing the work that I was charged for. I could have sued him. But it would have cost more in attorney fees than I would recover. So I chose to wait and fight another day, and in a different way. I was left Shell Shocked again... by yet another person who made me believe that I could trust them.
Steve Kurzman - The Custom Stitching Company. Steve worked with me to implement the interior for this car that I wanted. I would have to say that we worked well together. He kept me informed, he sought my input, and he stuck to the budget. If anything came up that pushed the budget, he explained it well, and allowed me to decide which way I wanted to proceed. Communication was always two-way. And the result was a beautiful interior for Pandora. There have been people that have looked at the interior and said, "Yeah, it looks really nice, but they should have done so & so differently"... I take things like that with a grain of salt, because most people have no idea how extremely limited we are when trying to work inside these cars. There just isn't any room to do the things that you see in my car.
The vendor that Steve uses to install Audio components happened to be a trained & certified Porsche technician, who was also well versed in automotive wiring. Ross cleaned up all of the wiring issues and made it right. I was (and still am) very happy with the work that he did for me.
There were only a couple of things that happened with Steve, and cause issue with me.
First, when the car was finished, we were taking it directly from Steve's shop to a Porsche race shop to have the suspension dialed in. I had arranged for a trailer to pick her up and transport her over. Well Steve hit me with a final bill of about 3500 +, when I was only expecting about 1000.00. He claimed to have sent an e-mail invoice, but I never got it. So I had everything arranged to move the car to one place to the other, and Steve telling me that he "couldn't" release the car until the bill was paid in full. So guess what? I paid the bill. Was I happy about it? Hell no. Did I get the interior that I had hoped for? Yes, Absolutely.
Second, When I sat in the car to move out of his shop and into the trailer, I was having a hard time with my knees and the upper roll bar cover hanging a little lower than it should which blocked my field of vision. I mentioned it to Steve, and he told me that at this point it pretty much is what it is... Certainly not what I wanted to hear after spending 27,000.00 + for him to do the interior.
I reached back out to him on November (17th) of 2016 about shaving the roll bar cover and re-covering it to allow for a little more range of vision. That was finally done last week. March 1, I believe. The part sat in his office month after month, while he worked on other things, until I finally lost it with him. And still had to wait 4 more weeks after that. It's done now... so my eyes are pointed forward.
The Race shop that did the suspension, did some awesome work, and got Pandora dialed in perfectly. And for the amount of money that we had agreed on! Happy? Yes! (In a recent shake down video that I posted, part of what we were doing was getting to car up to speed and then stopping from low, medium, and higher speeds. The first at medium speed, she pulled to the right just a little. The very next stop tracked dead straight. And the same from a little higher speeds. Perfect.)
And then... The transporter that brought the car back from his shop to my house did so with an added gift... a scratch in the front right bumper area that was about 8" long and down to the primer. I was pretty upset to see that, and wondered when things like this would ever end? Of course, no one knew anything about it. It wasn't there when it left the shop (according to the shop owner), and it was already there when he picked the car up (according to the driver)... I was pretty much over the fact that I couldn't seem to send my car out to have any work done, without needing to do something else as a result when I got it back. I had already planned to have some scratches corrected and decided that I would suck it up and add it to the list.
The Stig
03-09-2017, 12:42 PM
I needed to have some scratches repaired and I knew who I would NOT be sending back to. So, with huge hesitation, I started looking for someone to do the work. Since I had spoken to RK Motors in the past (Prior to ever having any body & paint work done), I decided to ask them for an estimate to have the work done. They said that they didn't do that sort of work any longer, but asked if I wanted the contact information for the person that they were using for their cars when they needed paint. Yep! I sure would!
Enter Tony Kutas, Charlotte Speed Shop.
I called Tony, and he came to my home to see the car and give me an estimate of correcting the scratches the needed to be fixed, as well as fitting the hatch and painting it. Still being very distrustful of any shops, I let him know what I had been through along the way. The story (history) blew him away... During the conversation with Tony, I got the feeling that he was someone that I could let work on my car. So we discussed it in more detail. We agreed on a price, and he later brought his trailer and took the GTM up to his shop in North Charlotte. We've obviously gone from fixing a few scratches, to a total re-do, and here's why...
When he started trying to match the paint, he put his sun lights on the car. As soon as he did, we could see waves and sanding marks and blurs, and you name it. That's when he asked me if I minded telling him what I paid for paint and body work. I told him, and he went around the car showing me everything that I was charged for, but never happened. So the thing that went through my head, was that these shops could tell people like us ANYTHING they want, and we have no choice but to swallow it... hook, line, and sinker. Unless you do that sort of work yourself, you just wouldn't know. And if I did, my car would have never been at those shops to begin with... Tony asked what my goals were for the GTM. At the time, I had reason to believe (from Dave Smith) that my car would be used in their display at SEMA once it was finished. I also wanted it to be in local shows, etc. He shook his head, and asked whether or not the other shop knew this? I told him that he knew that my expectation was that the car would be done to a show car level when it was done. So Tony put a list of things together that he felt would need to be done if this car was ever going to sit under the lights at SEMA. And it was a LONG list. And it would mean a complete strip and re-work. I was furious, yet again. And I was over it, yet again. And I told him that I wasn't putting another penny into this, beyond what it would take to fix the scratches, the roof, and fit and paint the hatch.
Tony understood, and set off to work. When he got the everything ready for the booth, he called me as asked me whether I wanted the scratches and hatch painted the color of the car, or the color that I was told that it was? (Lexus Indigo Ink - Pearl) The Paint code for the match was nowhere near the Lexus paint code that I was told the car was painted. Furious, and Over it again. I told him to match the car and paint it. I just wanted this to end. He said that he would prep it and have it ready to be painted the next day.
So, I had another night to think about EVERYTHING that I've been through during this project while my car was in the hands of other shops, who all went out of their way to make me believe that that they could be trusted with my car. And I just got more angry. I couldn't find a good way to calm down that didn't involve large amounts of cognac. (And that would be expensive also).
And then it hit me... If I were to strip the car, I could document in reverse how the paint came off, and prove that the work that was paid for was never done. Paint shops get away with so much, because what person in their right mind would strip a car back down just to prove that specific work wasn't done, and that the work that was done, was done poorly? I've never claimed to be a person that was smarter than the average bear, but this made perfect sense to me. So I called Tony and told him not to paint the car. "I want to strip it and start over completely". The car was in the booth, the matching paint was mixed and in the gun, and he was literally about to start spraying…
That is why you saw so many freaking pictures of Pandora at various levels of being stripped. Every High and low that was left in the body would be revealed as proof. The entire car was riddled in them. The work that was done previously was crap. And I certainly didn't get what I had paid for. The more I saw, the more I asked Tony to take his time, and take it all the way back down until we get smooth flat surfaces to start over with; which is exactly what he has done. The pictures that I have posted along the way, were to document for myself that I got exactly what I had paid for, as well as show others that there are people out there THAT CAN BE TRUSTED to do what they have agree to do and at the level that you expect for the amount of money being paid.
That's not to say that Tony and I haven't had a couple of times where we've gone head to head, but that was more out of frustration of the amount of time, or from another customer within the shop that thought that his car should be worked ahead of mine. But those were aired out and forgotten (hopefully). I admit that I am generally quiet, but when pushed can become someone’s worst nightmare. And I don't apologize for it.
I'm sure that Tony probably felt that this was unleashed on him once or twice, but it wasn't: Because I respect him. And I trust him. 100%. I can't honestly say the same for others that I've dealt with along this journey.
After the average person spends the time to read this build thread from start to end, I'm sure that most would form the opinion that I've simply been gullible, and that I allowed this sort of stuff to happen. They would be wrong on multiple levels.
They have no idea to what extent I've vetted people in order to get a feel for them, their trustworthiness, and their level of professionalism. At some point you get to the line drawn in the sand where the work simply has to be done in order to move forward, and you have to make a choice. And hopefully you've made the best choice based on the information that you've been able to uncover, or that you know, or that you simply believe. (Or all of the above). The bottom line is that you'll either get screwed, or you'll luck out and find someone who can be trusted.
So there you have it; the history of taking my GTM and creating Pandora. She's been a real B1tch...!!!!!!!!!! And it's been a true roller coaster of emotion, but Tony & I are claiming our own victories; tangible and otherwise.
Some people know that this is my first build; and most may not. I can say that I've learned more than I ever thought I would about what it takes to get through get through the "mechanics" of building a car. But I've learned exponentially more about the people that you are forced to choose from in the process of building something of this nature. It is what it is, and it always will be. There are always going to be those people that will go out of their way to over-charge, and nickel and dime you until they know that you absolutely have nothing left to spend. That's simply the way they do business; and that will NEVER change. It's WHO THEY ARE.
So, for all you first time builders who have your build plans laid out so nicely on you excel spreadsheet print out; get ready for the "10%" of unexpected budget creep that you've figured in to be used. And be sure not to blink; because as soon as your car goes to someone else's shop, and you give them authorization to begin work, that 10% will be a vacuum in history. It just will. And they will smile when they hand you and invoice for the balance. So be ready to stay on top of it.
I know that this sounds negative, or that I am discouraging people from making the leap of faith in themselves that they can complete a project like this. Actually I am saying the opposite. If I can go through these things and come out of the other end with a beautifully completed car, then any of you can as well. And I would be the first to encourage you to do so. But if you do, just pay close attention to it, as well as anyone (external) that charges you for work that you've asked to have done. Don't let it intimidate you. You will learn how to manage it. You will. And you will enjoy most of it. :)
Enjoy your build everyone. But remember that there is plenty of time for these people to be your "friends" after they've completed the work for you, and to your satisfaction.
That was a HUGE lesson for me to learn.
Sorry for the rant / explanation / justification / history lesson. Something about this latest post sparked the nightmare again...
Take care.

Just remember...the journey is supposed to be more fun than the destination. Otherwise we could all just buy a Corvette or a Porsche and go have just as much driving fun. If it isn't, then maybe you should examine how the journey has been taken. :)

I had a similar journey building my house a couple years ago (unexpected astronomical overage invoice at the end). It does leave a sour taste in your mouth, almost makes you hate the finished product even though it is exactly what we designed/wanted.
You should have had Tony save the white primer powder he sanded off Pandora, stuff it in some envelopes, and mail it to a couple shops...;)

I think that was what I just did... :) And I can promise you that this is one that will not be duplicated by me...
Some journeys are educational, because in order to enjoy and/or appreciate the destination, you have to first know the hills and valleys that got you there. Then you decide if you want to take the freeway back home or not.

It Will Be One Serious Debut To Say The Least When Pandora Is Officially Unveiled!
We'll know this weekend... Caffeine & Octane at the Beach (Jekyll Island, Ga.) 3/17, 18, & 19.
It'll be interesting to find out how she fits in with some of the other amazing cars that will be there. I received an e-mail that she had been approved for a "Premier Display" spot. I'm not sure what that really means other than she'll either be on the grass at the entrance of the convention center, or actually inside on the carpet. Who knows?
I just think it's cool that she will be seen ANYWHERE besides a shop. (No offense Tony...) :)
I don't think I can make it, but at least she'll be there.

Gee whiz Mike, you should warn us that the pictures were NSFW! I didn't know we were going to look up Pandora's skirt!
You are right, that is some serious paint prep, or post paint work, or however one would categorize it. Very impressive plan, and I can only imagine how good she will look when Tony is done. That is going to be a mile deep finish!
I am sorry to hear you won't be in Georgia with her. I do hope you will be able to get lots of pictures.
Amazing determination Mike!

Just a bit of a warning, and this is for everyone...you should understand that on a GTM all the weight is in the rear of the car. The rear lift points should be as far towards the rear tires as you can get them. If you look at our FFR PDG GTM race car, you will notice that we put in a jack post option so that we can jack the car up when it comes into the pits with a flat and if the air jacks will not operate. The spot for this jack post is right at the bottom of the main roll cage hoop and seems to be just about the center of gravity for the car. There are quite a few pictures on the web of people having "issues" on lifts by putting the arms where you would on a "normal car" which the GTM, and really any mid engine vehicle, isn't. Just be aware.
The Stig

That's an excellent point Mike. I think that some people may tend to forget that there is a great deal of weight in the rear. But the corner weights also indicate that there is almost equal weight at the front. My car balanced at 45/55 (front/rear) when I had the suspension set.
It may be hard to tell in this picture, but I believe that Tony has the rear arms where I asked him to put them. They are at the rear cross bar, just inside where the cage connects to the outer rails. It's really the only place to pick the car up from the rear. Any further forward and your on the 1/16" aluminum panel that will certainly not support any weight.

Did you go into any detail in your posts about how the headlight covers were: Bonded to fiberglass buckets, polished, black rimmed? They look very nice. I need to do something with my 818 covers and if they turned out looking like yours I would be very happy! If you covered it already, just say and I will dig through to find them.
Thanks!

Hi Ben,
The Headlight covers are replacements that I bought from North Race Cars; (a Vendor on this Forum). I think they're poly-carbonate that has been formed and cut to better fit the body openings. The Black paint used to black out the edges was purchased from Jerry Bickel Racing, an On-Line race shop.
Kevin located the covers in the headlight openings, and they were bonded in place by a 3M bonding product, but I am not exactly sure which one.
A couple of very small holes (1/16" or so) were drilled in the bottom side of the buckets (very close to the lights) to allow them to breathe and help prevent fogging.
Then I believe Tony polished them with a plastic polish (3M or Meguiars).
That's about it, as far as I know.

Thank you for the details on your build. I have been following for the last couple of years, but did not know the extent of the screwing some shops gave you. It's a shame those people stay in business. I had planned to go to C & O at Jekyl, but my other half has to work Saturday. I hate to miss the debut, but I'm sure I will see her sometime. Beautiful car! I'm glad you stuck with it. Good luck at Jekyl!

My wife and I learned today that one of her Aunts passed away. She was diagnosed with cancer in August, went through 2 rounds of the prescribed chemo "treatments", was admitted to Hospice last week, and passed away today. Her name was Sue, and Pam really loved her. The two of them had always had a very close bond. We were afraid that this might be coming very soon, which was why I was hesitant to make plans to be in Jekyll Island this week. Family is far more important than a Car or a Car Show.
But with that said, Pandora will be in great hands. Tony will be watching over her, and representing me, Pandora, and Charlotte Speed Shop.
I am really interested in seeing how Pandora holds up in comparison to some really nice cars.
We have the Charlotte Auto Fair coming up in 3 weeks. Hopefully, Huntington Beach in 6 weeks. And another show close to home the next weekend.
So if we miss this weekend, we still have quite a bit to keep us busy.
It should be interesting.

Thank you all. When I got up Friday morning, Pam pretty much kicked me out of the house, telling me that I needed to go to Jekyll Island to be at Pandora's first show. I told her that I wasn't going down because I wanted to be home with her. The passing of her Aunt was pretty tough on her, even though she hid it well. Of everyone who has followed the ups and downs of Pandora's progress, Pam knows intimately how much I've been looking forward to the point in time where I we could enter the first show, and see how people react to her.
She was insistent that I go for the weekend and enjoy the experience. She said that after everything we've been through I deserved to be there. The more I resisted, the more upset she seemed to get. So I gave in (literally), and packed a bag to make the trip down.
Tony sent this picture, showing that they were there, and Pandora was parked in her spot.

Who would have ever thought?

When I got to the show, I walked around for a while taking a look at some incredible cars, and began meeting some awesome people. I looked for Tony, but didn't see him for a while. I got up to the Convention center in the "Premier" display areas and there was Pandora; situated between a couple of Ferraris. A very nice Testarossa, and a new 488.

The Convention Center was an awesome place to hold an event like this. The grounds were manicured and gave a perfect setting, and made every car there look even that much nicer. The problem was that with the wind, and all the people walking around, grass and dust was always flying around and coating the cars.
The micro-fiber cloth got a work out... Talk about holding something lightly, I wasn't about to put any pressure on that towel...

The line up. I had a quite a lot of people come straight to Pandora from across the lawn. The reason... when they looked across, they saw a Sweet Testarossa, A great looking 488, and an immense and equally beautiful Rolls Royce. But they also saw something that they had never seen before (in person). Pandora drew a crowd for that reason, as well as the fact that Tony, Kevin, Rodney, and Kenny did an amazing job with her.

I started getting the impression that he was either the CEO of about 10 major global corporations, or an under cover double-naught spy... He had a story for every person and for every occasion. It made for an interesting day to say the least. The white 488 was his wife's car. And the Yellow 458 Speciale that you car see in the background was his...

There were times when there were a lot of people around the car, and then there were times that there were a couple here and there. But each time there were tons of questions, lots of wide eyes, and a ton of appreciation for the level of completion and fitment.
"Top rate", "Superior", "Coach built precision", and "Un-be-lievable" were words that were used. I never expected this sort of response. I'm not really sure that I knew what to expect, but it was nice to see that the effort and results were appreciated.

There were times that I would look up and see 5, 6, 10 people standing at the front of the car looking down. I started wondering what was wrong with the nose of the car... So when I walked around and saw that they were just reading the data card, I laughed at myself for being such a newbie in the car show world.

As soon as I walked up there with them, the questions started flying... "What kind of Ferrari is a Factory Five" was an actual question that one of the guys asked. He had just read the data card a couple of minutes before. Then he said that since it was parked between the other Ferrari's it made sense that it was a Ferrari also. I think he finally understood that it was a Factory Five GTM, component kit car, made in Wareham, MA, and built by me. I was also quick to point to Tony to give credit where it was absolutely due.

At around 4 o'clock, one of the event organizers for Caffeine & Octane stopped by to invite Pandora and Bill Phillips' SLC into a Super car party when the show ended for the day. It would be held at the beach-side courtyard at the Westin Hotel next to the Convention Center. The problem was that there was no direct access to the courtyard area where we would be parked... So we had to drive down the sidewalk between the beach and Hotel...
That was interesting.

At 6:15, we were lined up to get ready for our Super Car Parade down the Sidewalk. You can see the tail of Bill Phillips' SLC. That car got a TON of attention all day long. And for good reason. It is one of the best examples of what those cars can be, that you'll probably ever see.

What a great way to end the day, at our first show.
Though I have to admit, I spent most of the day worried about my wife and what she was dealing with all day, by herself, so that I could be in Jekyll Island realizing a dream (that we were supposed to share together).
Shortly after this picture was taken, I jumped in the car and drove back to Charlotte. I was able to be at the show Friday afternoon and Saturday; and I wanted to get home to my wife, just to make sure that she was Ok. She had had a very tough day, being at her Aunt's funeral, and hosting relatives afterwards. I knew that she had to be exhausted, and I just wanted to at least be at home with her, whether I could help or not.
I got home at 1:30 am, and was then able to appreciate the accomplishment of Pandora's first show.
A huge level of thanks and gratitude go out to Tony, and every person at Charlotte Speed Shop for helping me finally get Pandora done, and making sure that the results were exactly what I had always pictured in my mind's eye. She absolutely does: and then some.
Thank you to everyone here on the Forum. I appreciate you allowing me to share my small accomplishments here and there, as well as allowing me to vent when I needed to. (which seemed to be a lot lately). I had a clear picture in my head of what this GTM would eventually be, but You guys helped to keep me on track to my goals. Thank you for the help that you've given, as well as the friendships that you've extended. It has been absolutely appreciated.
But most of all, and above all else, I have to thank my wife Pam for supporting the decision to start such at huge project, and then stick with it with me in order to ultimately see it through. I'm not sure whether or not I could have stuck with this, if I didn't know that she was good with it, and wanted it for me. Pam you have always been, and always will be an amazing woman, the love of my life, my soulmate, and my best friend. Sweetheart, as the legendary Jack Nicholson once said to Dianne Lang, "You're not like anybody"... :)
And Thank you for saying yes!
Now with that said, Pandora is like all other builds, in that they are never really "finished". There will always be something to take care of. But for all practical purposes, I'm calling her Finished.
This has been a great, fun, frustrating, and awesome learning experience. I've never taken on anything quite like this, at least not to this scale. To be at the point where I can say she's complete, is almost overwhelming to realize that I did it... That Pam & I did it. I finally know the satisfaction that so many others here have found at the end of their build journeys. And it feels good.
I have the registration process started, and should have tags on her very soon. Expect pictures, and a video (or two), when it that is done.
Thanks everyone,
Mike

Congratulations on steering her to the finish line. I can't wait to see more of her in the shows that are coming up. However, I really can't wait to hear about your experiences on the road with that beautiful car!!

Mike,
Just want to say congratulations on such a beautiful build.
Not many people understand the pride that you are filled with when you are able to reach, and cross the finish line, of one of the most complex projects that you'll ever experience.
I also want to throw out a huge shout out of appreciation to your lovely wife Pam, for giving you so much support in this endeavor. Without that support, from our wife's and girlfriends, a lot of these cars would never be started or completed. Pam is one of the best, and your one lucky dog.
Please keep this thread up, and tell us all about the future adventures that will surely come your way. (Besides if you end this thread, not sure what most of us will do, it's been a part of our lives for so long, I hate to have forum thread withdraws :o )
So cut yourself a big ole slice of Raisin Pie you really earned it, and I hope to see you and Pandora at Wareham in June for the Open House.
Thanks for the journey.

When I talked about friendships extended through this forum, my friendship with you is certainly highly appreciated.
We hope that you and your family are doing well. Please keep in touch.
If you can get uncle Sam to let you borrow the F-15 for a couple of days, maybe you could consider a trip to Pinehurst... Say around May 5th & 6th?

Wow, Thank you Mike. I appreciate the kind words. I am proud of how this project has turned out. We finally turned the corner, and was able to get it finished up. It took a bit longer than I had ever expected, but she ended up exactly as I had planned. So I guess it was worth the wait...

Funny, my wife and I saw that same candy red GTM at the London show years ago, I had just started my roadster. My wife looked at it and said "That's the one you should build next!" I bet Dave and the guys were building that demo car and someone said, "We better paint this thing a color that the women can't resist... That's how we'll sell a ton of them!"

Hi Buddy. Yes, I received an e-mail a week or so ago, after my "completion" post, that they wanted to do a post regarding Pandora. They asked whether or not I had some pictures that I could send, as well as a summary in regard to the build history. So, I put together a few pictures and wrote a summary that gave a brief history.
Nice write-up. Congratulations again!

The Red LS-7 GTM, was definitely an eye catcher, and it apparently did it's job well. I don't know what the total GTM count is at this point, but I think it's around 450 - 500.
I have been absolutely surprised that there weren't at least twice that number sold. It is a truly beautiful design.
The final statement by Dave was to make a point in terms of how to start a project like this...
****************
"Congratulations to Michael on a job well done. It's not just a sales pitch, it's really true that starting a fresh build with new parts is usually easier than starting with a partially built car. In any event, Mike's GTM is a true family heirloom and a beautiful example of craftsmanship and dedication.

I truly appreciate the kind words from Dave Smith in his post.
To be clear, while I did start this build with a kit that I purchased from a previous owner, this car was completely disassembled, down to the bare frame. From that point I sorted through every part, and determined which parts that I wanted to use going forward, and those that I would replace. As it turned out, everything on this car is new, including a new set of upper and lower control arms / bushings, uprights, hubs, and ball joints that I plan to install at a later date. (That will more than likely take place this winter, if I still own the car).
Thanks for the kind words.

I spent the afternoon detailing Pandora's Engine Bay for the car show this weekend.
I wish I had thought to take a "before" picture. She had about 2 years worth of shop dust that had accumulated.
Wayne Carini (Chasing Classic Cars) would have absolutely drooled. He seems to like the whole "Barn Dust" & "Patina" look.
Pandora had her "Barn Dust & Patina" look going on. I don't like that look... So now she doesn't have it any longer!

I think we got the over heating problem figured out. The overflow tanks for the radiator, had a 16 psi cap. Since it is at the lowest level of the cooling system tanks, there is a bit of pressure (more than 16 psi) to get the coolant to the engine/heads and then up to the header tank (the highest point of the system).
We were seeing coolant come out of the radiator overflow, neck drain. So I decided to try a higher pressure cap. We went to a 32 lb cap.
So far, it seems to have fixed the problem.

Three days of detailing...
Day 1 - Engine Bay
Day 2 - Under the Hood
Day 3 - Interior, Wheels, Tires, and Exhaust
If you look closely at the driver's side front fender, you'll see Pandora trying to peek out from behind another reflection. I don't know what is on the roof of the shop that would cause this reflection, but I see a woman's face, from the nose down. Sort of a Bat-Man type cartoon-ish sort of thing. Pam sees it also; so I know I'm not 100% crazy.
If that's Pandora, she seems to be happy. For Once... Who would have ever thought...?

She's finally ready for the show. We're taking her to the speedway tomorrow to get her in her spot.
She is being displayed with 3 other cars that have been worked by the Charlotte Speed Shop.
Tony will get to showcase a good bit of his recent work. Pandora, Bill Phillip's (Rumbles) SLC, A sweet 69 Chevelle (396), and very nice BMW M3.
This is a "local" car show: a really large show, but local. This particular show (The Charlotte Auto Fair) has been one of my bucket list items since I started the build, because it allows me to come full circle. I saw my first GTM at this show in 2008. (Factory Five's Red LS7 GTM show car).
Tomorrow, my car will be shown at the same show. I'm pretty pumped! I can't wait to see her on the grass in the tri-oval of the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Believe it or not, Tony wasn't happy with how the wing looked when we were at the Jekyll Island show, so he decided to block it and re-paint it. Hopefully it will be ready for tomorrow.

Hi Dave,
I've always been a little obsessive when I start cleaning things; especially cars. This was the first time that I've been able to work on Pandora for any period of time, without being in the way of the guys at the shop. When we went to Jekyll, she wasn't as clean as I would have preferred because we were sort of rushed to get her finished and in the trailer. Since I had the time this week, I dove in and did the detail work as best I could to try to put her best foot forward. I think she's ready to go.
We'll see what Mr. Foose thinks about her if he should happen to come by and have a look. He's supposed to be judging, best vendor, best build, and best paint this weekend.
It should be fun.

I made it to the show this morning around 8:45, and when I walked up to the car, this is what I saw...
Throughout the day, Pandora drew large groups of people. And the Famous question? You guessed it.... What IS that? :)

I was fortunate enough to meet Brent (Tucker498) and his family. I've been looking forward to meeting him for a while now. What a great group of people! We spent some time talking about the GTM, and the build. And then we walked around the car I showed him what we've done in terms of body modifications, panel fitment, gaps, etc., etc. I opened the car up and let him sit in it and get a feel for it. We fired it up, and let him hear it run a bit.
It was fun to be able to talk about Pandora, and the build with a forum friend, (now an actual friend) that has a real understanding of what it means to build one of these. I had a blast, answering his questions (to the best on my ability) and showing him exactly what he was building. So many of us see this car in pictures, and decide to build it, but never having even actually seen one in person. It's an amazing leap of faith. It's fun when a builder can come to a show, and see "their car" in the flesh (or fiberglass) for the first time. I was lucky enough to see the Factory Five car in person, and then get to drive two that were owned by my friends Gary Cheney (NH), and Allan Uzwiak (CT). Allan invited me up to his place to see his car, and offered to let me drive it. I couldn't believe it.
And of course I said YES!
And That thing was Faaaaaasssssttttttt!!!!!!! (It was then that I finally understood what I was building.)
Gary had me up a few years back to stay with him during the Factory Five Open House. He later came down to Charlotte with the Factory Five crew during the Cobra / Mk-IV shootout the ZeeMax Dragway. Gary had his Koni / SEMA GTM there, and offered to let me take it for a couple of quick laps around the parking lot.
And of course I said YES!
And That thing was Faaaaaasssssttttttt!!!!!!!
Shortly after that, (same day), the owner of the 427 Cobra allowed me to do the same in his million dollar Shelby 427 Cobra.
And of course I said YES!
And yes, that thing was Faaaaaaasssssstttttt too!!!
There are times when it seems like the clouds part and my lucky stars shine brightly. I told myself right then that I would try to do the same whenever I could. Sort of a "pay-it-forward" kind of thing. After meeting Brent, I knew that I had made the right decision. He's a great guy, and will be another great ambassador for the GTM community.
The show ended for the day at around 5pm for the public, so it started thinning out a little and we re-arranged the cars. I couldn't resist the urge to take a couple of pictures without a lot of people moving in and out. She looked really nice.

Today was sort of a warm up for the big show day. Saturday's are swamped with people, so I'll have to keep an eye on Pandora. I saw a ton of people with key chains clipped to their belt loops as that leaned over to look inside of at the engine bay. I cringed on a regular basis today. I can only guess how tomorrow is going to be.
But I do know that it'll be fun. I had a blast today. And Pam is going with me tomorrow. Woo Hoo!

Road Racer,
Thank you for the compliments.
I can assure you that the pictures that you see here are real, and untouched. Taken with my i-Phone 6. The sun was setting, and a shadow was cast across the front stretch of the race track. So the pictures are a little darker than I had hoped.
I have noticed that the paint really seems to "glow" during the morning and and the evening at dusk.
Bill Philip's SL-C was selected to be judged and won for best paint/build. Later that evening, Tony got a call from Chip, to compliment his work.
At least we were at the show, talking to good people, and having a good time. Pandora looks great to me, and I am proud of how she has turned out.

Pam spent the day with me at the car show. I have really enjoyed talking to people about the car, and trying my best to answering their questions. I wasn't prepared for some of the things that people would ask over the course of the show... Some were really personal and absolutely none of their business. Some were just designed to be insulting, having to do with the word "KIT". And then there were some that were just fun to talk to and compare notes with past experiences. I had a couple of conversations today that really gave me a good feel about the level of quality we have built into Pandora. Sitting in the sun and extreme wind for a couple of days was worth it. Having Pam there, made the day even more fun. She said that she would like to come back again tomorrow (Sunday), so we're going head back out tomorrow morning, bright and early!

When we walked up to Pandora this morning, the Suburban that you see was parked very close. The front wheel of the suburban was very close to the nose of the GTM. I feel pretty sure that if Pam hadn't been there, I would have ended up in someone's face explaining the virtues of having a little respect and common sense... And that it might even be possible for them to experience the use of them at the same time... But, I kept quiet, and moved my car over a little.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/jmichaelbaskin003/IMG_4639_zpssb7z6kwv.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/jmichaelbaskin003/IMG_4639_zpssb7z6kwv.jpg.html)
After a while the Suburban left, and I had a chance to get a nice clear picture. So I took advantage.

Jason Cecil (Carbon Fiber) stopped by today to say hello. It was great to be able to catch up with him. For those who don"t know (or remember), Jason created the rear hatch for me. He and I went through a couple of design conversations by phone, and I drew a couple of sketches that I scanned and sent to him. We we're not able to come up with a way to do what I was thinking, and then he sketched a design that made a ton of sense to me. And now you can see it nicely covering the engine bay. Thanks Jason!
I enjoyed the conversation, and hope to get together again before long.

There were lots of people with lots of questions. And for the most part the reactions were all very positive.
That's what I was hoping for in this outing.

Hi All!
At the end of the Show on Sunday, Tony suggested that we make a few laps of the Charlotte Motor Speedway, in order to get a few pictures of Pandora.
So we did... We couldn't move at any speed because there were too many people around, and the Cornelius Sheriff's department were watching the track.
So here we are, Up against the wall in Turn 1 of the Charlotte Motor Speedway... :)
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/jmichaelbaskin005/IMG_3709_zpslrgsepvk.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/jmichaelbaskin005/IMG_3709_zpslrgsepvk.jpg.html)

That is a seriously steep angle at the top of turn 1. Once Tony got his pictures, he moved the cone barriers, and we went back around the track. I got into the throttle for a few seconds through 2nd & 3rd gears. It took a couple of seconds, and Pam was yelling at me to slow down. :) So I did.
I had a good time talking to people about Pandora. I was really surprised that there were a LOT of who absolutely knew what the GTM was, and it was fun to talk to them about their "dream" or plans of building their own GTM. There were a heck of a lot more people who absolutely had no idea what it was. But they sure thought they did... Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, GT-40, Ford GT, Ferrari-Factory Five, Ferrari-GTM, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. There was a lot of entertainment value in the people that wanted to educate me about the car that I own.
It really was a good time. It was tiring to be there for 4 solid days in the cold, wind, sun, heat, etc; but it was fun. But above everything else, I really enjoyed being there with Pam. It was really nice to sit in the car that we've been trying finish up, as we drive around the speedway, and look over and see my wife. The single funnest part of the whole weekend. (Even if she was nervous in the car). She said that she now has a deeper respect for Dannica Patrick. Not sure where that came from...

Hi Guys.
This is very tough for me. Part of me actually can't believe I'm posting this, and the other part of me has been spring loaded for it, but I think this weekend helped me to make the decision that I needed to make in order to sell Pandora. I wanted to hold onto her throughout the years of my life and then pass her along to one of my kids. (I'm thinking my youngest daughter Kendal, because she is extremely competitive and would appreciate the fact that Pandora is subtle, but would absolutely smoke anyone who has the misfortune of trying her.
Pandora is gorgeous and I can't believe how many people were be pulled towards her during the shows... But there are things going on in my world that led me to this point, and while Pam and I were sitting at the top of Turn 1 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, it occurred to me that I've taken her as far as I can, and someone else can now enjoy her. I'll just be the proud Poppa watching from the bleachers.
I have a number in mind, and I would be happy to discuss numbers that may work for both of us. If there is any interest, feel free to PM me and I'll get in touch with you as soon as I am able to.
Understand that RK Motors here in Charlotte will also be marketing Pandora for sale internationally. I am locked into the decision, and serious about selling her. So if there is anyone here who has an interest, please let me know. I would much rather it go to someone here who knows what she is, before some billionaire who simply thinks it's a unique car to add to his collection. But..., if he calls first, it'll probably go to him.
Please feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss the purchase.
Thank you,
Mike

This is the guy that I wish was buying Pandora. I've felt a connection with Brent from the first time that we spoke (corresponded) via the forum. He seems like a great guy and a kindred spirit in terms of GTM's. But he has his own very nice GTM build under way, and when he finishes his, I know he will appreciate it as much as I do mine. Keep up the good work Brent. I'll be following along, and here for you if I can ever help you.

Again... Pandora is for sale. If you missed the initial post due to the pictures... (See post #1936)
I'll post more pictures of the interior later. But everyone here knows Pandora. This is one of the the most documented GTMs in existence. And I would be happy to explain any details that you may want to know. Send a PM, and I'll call you back as soon as I can.

Am I going to miss her...? Absolutely!
But I think this is something that I need to do.
She's beautiful, and of very high quality. And I think I would get as much enjoyment watching Pandora's new owner go through the shows and post their experiences and pictures. (If someone here decides to buy her). Otherwise, she'll go to another country, and we won't see her again. That would hurt.

Thank you guys.
The next build, will more than likely be a 62' Vette. I will be at least a couple of months or so down the road though. I want to take a break from projects for a bit and sort of get re-charged for the next. It will be a resto-vette, with subtle queues, that Pam would not be as nervous in. She love the look and sound of Pandora, but I never realized how nervous she was with the power. When I blipped the throttle a bit on the back stretch of the speedway, it really bothered her. So that was one of the signs that I was looking for in terms of making my decision. No regrets at all. Once I make these sort of choices, I tend to move forward from there.
But make no mistake, I could not be any more proud of Pandora and how she finished up. She's exactly what I was working towards. (I'm smiling also).
Hopefully someone with a strong desire for a nice GTM will make their choice to purchase Pandora, and move forward as well.
If interested, please feel free to send a PM, and I'll provide contact information.

I took Pandora to a local show this morning at R.K. Motors; sort of a cars & coffee, but they gave out "Best of" awards. The people at the show voted for their favorites, and each person's votes were tallied.
Pandora won Best Custom, and Best Wheels. Yay.
It was fun to hang out with Pam and see some really nice cars in the R.K. Motors show room. Pam saw a numbers matching 61 vette (with an automatic transmission) that she really liked. Hmmmm.

After the Charlotte Auto Fair, Pandora was taken back to Tony's shop to finish up the final punch list items.
Then Tony cleaned her up and got her ready to take to R K Motors to be sold. Part of me is screaming that after everything, I should just keep her.
But the other 24.9% is yelling at me to follow my head on this one.

She's a great example of what these cars can be, so I don't think I'm asking too much. Certainly less than some of the others that I've seen.
I don't know... If they can sell her for what I hope to get, then great. If not, maybe I will bring her home... These guys are really good at what they do, so I guess we'll see how it all works out.

Hello everyone.
I have always believed that "the factory five forum" is likely one of the best builder forums available anywhere. And the reason, plain and simple, is the mix of people that we have here. You guys are without doubt some of the best that I have ever seen. I have had the GREAT fortune to have met many of you. And I have to say that, every single time, I have been impressed with the character and level of genuine care for others here. I consider so many of you, close friends of mine. If there is ever anything that I can do for you, I hope you know that all you have to do is ask. If it's possible, I will make it happen. You are all, simply the best that there are.
With that said...
I received an amazing PM from one of our senior forum members last night, that absolutely stunned, and humbled me. It shook me up completely, because it was so unexpected, and I have to say that it absolutely came at a time when I "needed" it most. (Needed, but never expected)
Steve, (WIS89), I can not begin to thank you for your letter. I read it twice, and Pam must have noticed the look of surprise on my face and asked if everything was Ok. I read the note to her, and she just smiled, shook her head, and was Silent. She finally just said... Wow... And that it was "perfect".
Steve, Thank you so much for your kind words, and for taking the time to sit down and put them together in such a supportive and uplifting note. I can't remember but a couple of times in my life when I've felt so good about myself. Period. Thank you.
The words of thanks and appreciation, that you deserve to hear from me, are many. But even this morning as I write this, I am still humbled to point that all I can say is Thank you. Thank you! Thank you!
Your words just became, for me, all of the trophies and recognition that all of us hope to get in some way or another after building our "dream" cars. I couldn't be more excited about Pandora's completion; even if Chip Foose had personally presented me with a "Best Whatever" Trophy.
This letter will be framed and placed in my office, and will absolutely be viewed as the best "Trophy" that I could have ever received in recognition of Pandora. Period. Bar none.
As I have said a couple of times, I am humbled, and very appreciative.
Thank you.

Your karma always comes back to you.
Best of luck,

My friend, Bill Phillips, just sent an e-mail with a You Tube link from "The Milk Man" at Hot Rod Madness. To be honest, I had completely forgotten about this, until Bill sent the link to me.
During the Charlotte Auto Fair, (I think it was Friday - day 1), Bill and I were interviewed and asked to talk a little about our cars. My 5 1/2 minutes of fame; who would have guessed?
Our cars were all there as a representation of the work that Tony and his guys do at Charlotte Speed Shop. So it was nice that "The Milk Man" gave him the introduction into the interviews.
Here is the link to mine. Hope you like it. (I never learned how to insert a video link so it comes up with the visual graphic as opposed to just the link...)
Starts at 1:20 through 7:00 minutes.

My Mom, Aunt (Mom's twin sister) and my Uncle came to visit for the weekend. That's always a nice thing. They're fun to hang out with.
Mom had never seen Pandora in an actual "finished" state. So we drove up to R.K. Motors at the north side of Charlotte. We were allowed to browse the two very large showrooms and check out some unbelievable cars. We came to Pandora, and I gave them the tour. Mom & Jane thought it was "pretty", and she was proud of me (and Pam) for surviving the build. She may not have seen the car until now, but she's heard the war stories... Lynn looked around and appreciated the build quality and the overall look.
It made me feel good that they liked it. Today was a nice day.
I'm still selling her though... :)
Any Takers?
Take care everyone.

Mike,
We're all doing great. With eight, 14 and 16 year old Kiddies, its been busy. I had been consistent about starting it on a monthly basis, but I seem to have missed a few (or 3 or 4) months and I've tried on a few occasions, of the past few weeks.
Once I get it running again I plan to start making some progress.

Ok. R.K. Motors has had my car since April 5th. They have been working on the car to get it ready to sell. Tony Kutas has been tweaking odds and ends around Pandora. And OMG, the work that they did with the body and the paint has turned out absolutely incredible... Pandora is what she is, because of Tony, Kevin, Rodney, and Kenny. They all touched her and transferred their magic to make her what she is. And what she is..., is an awesome example of Jim Schenk's vision, as well as my slant on his design.
So with that said, not a day goes by that I don't second guess my decision to sell her. I'm still selling, but it is tough to do.
I think we're finally getting to the point that she is ready to be placed into the active inventory for R.K. Motors. She will be listed for about $120,000.00, which in all actuality is a $40,000.00 loss for me. But I think it will be a good deal, and a nice car for someone who is interested.
I had a representative from Barrett-Jackson call, to talk about running it through the Scottsdale Auction next year, and/or the Las Vegas auction this year around SEMA... but that guy just seemed a little more shady than I care to deal with just to sell a car. But that's just me... I could be 100% wrong, but that's how I felt.
It should be listed on the website very soon if you're interested. Or send me a private message, and I'll get you in touch with people that can put the deal together for you. :)

Mike,
Still amazed at how the car turned out. Pandora is a real beauty! You have set the bar very high for those that will follow. When I win the lottery this Saturday, I'm coming to get her. :D
All the best,

Factory Five should buy this car!
If only for the interior, it would make a great show car for FFR. The rest is icing on the cake.
Guess they've kind of moved away from the GTM as far as marketing though. :(

I like to log onto the forum every once in a while to catch up on what's going on with GTM builds. It looks like there are some nice builds going on. I have been surprised that there are no additional "finished" GTM's since I posted mine over a year ago.
Looking forward to seeing your cars when they are finished.

Thank you! I like to see the progress of people building the GTM. Needless to say I cruise your build thread when I'm on. My head was maxed out during my build, and I was sticking to the FFR design. I can'r imagine how you keep everything sorted out with all the custom changes that you're making. I'm looking forward to seeing this one when it's done.
Good luck!

Thank you for the compliment. I am very happy with how Pandora turned out. But it was the help from the great people of this forum that got me through it, and kept me focused. As my wife likes to say, "It takes a village to build the GTM..." Unless you're last name is Vacek. :)
Enjoy your build.

Today is a day that I have looked forward to, but also dreaded.
Pandora Has been Sold. And I didn't have to give her away.
On to the next project. Pam asked me if I was going to build the 62 Vette or the Mk-IV.
I might do the Mk-IV to have that to drive while I build the Vette.
So I guess the answer is "Both"!!!
News to follow. :)

Congrats Mike,
I was looking back at some of our emails from 2010 when I was starting my build. Being in this community with you made the build that much more fun. I am thinking about a MK IV build too. Maybe see you over in that forum. Cheers, NT

Hey-there. Your car looks amazing. I have my roadster at Whitbys and was wondering how long it is taking for your car to get done? I dropped mine off in October and not sure if there has been much progress to date.

Hi Dave! It's always great to hear from you. How's life in ATL? Pam is pulling me towards the Daytona. "She thinks they sound cool". But I think the Cobra would be a fun grocery getter. If you're in this area please don't hesitate to call.
Hey-there. Your car looks amazing. I have my roadster at Whitbys and was wondering how long it is taking for your car to get done? I dropped mine off in October and not sure if there has been much progress to date.
Ron
Thank you! My car has been done for a while. April 2017 was when I started calling it finished. Good luck with your build!

The Gen3 Daytona is a great car, I'd build one! Your wife has good taste! Most women would say it's too old, too simple, too obscure, too loud

Hello, I thought I would check in to say hello, and share a little about my next project...
I've found the car that will be used for that next project.
1962 Corvette Convertible. I looked for a while to find a car that I could drive for a bit, until I'm ready to start the project. (Probably this winter).

My Granddaughter liked it... She really liked it.

The picture below was built by Jeff Hayes in Bloomington Indiana, and is pretty much what I intend to build.
Art Morrison Chassis with IFS & IRS. LS376/525 with Tremec 6 spd
Schott Wheels with Michelin PS2's (18" front, 20" rear)

I love this color, and thought that I might paint my car in the same way... Charcoal Gray with Platinum Pearl mixed in
My Granddaughter and Wife both told me that I needed to keep the same color. (1962 Corvette Paint color - Honduras Maroon)

We'll see how it turns out.
For now, I'm enjoying driving it "as is".
As well, I still plan to build another Factory Five, and it will most likely be a Mk-IV.
I'm looking forward to getting both projects started.
Fun Fun Fun...

That is a beautiful car. Personal opinion, but I think it would be a shame to modify it as you have suggested. Find one that is already torn up or is just a shell and build that up. Gutting a classic, IMHO, is just wrong.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It seems like such a good example just to modify to that extreme, but it is your car so have fun either way!

Mike-
So good to see you back here! I've been wondering how you have been!
I really like your next project car. I know you talked about a restomod a while back, and it looks like you found a great car to start from.
The example of what yours will look like should make you really happy. That looks amazing, and I bet it drives beautifully!
Congratulations on your newest project, and please keep us updated. All the best!
Regards,
Steve

LOL... Thank you for the kind words. I think it looks pretty nice also.
As a matter of fact, I was just about to buy a "project" car that was just 5k less than the one I bought. That didn't make sense to me, so I bought one that was running, and had all the parts that I needed, and that could be titled/registered easily.
It was a benefit that it was in great shape, but it is really a nice daily-driver level Vette. And I'm having a blast going places in it with my wife, and taking my granddaughter for rides.
At some point it will be part of the new project. But that won't be for a few months. Until then, we're going to have fun with it.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello All.
I decided to log in and see what was going on in the world of Factory Five and to say hello.
I'll stop by again soon. I hope you're all doing well.
