I found a smaller set of a/c vents that I'm thinking of using in place of the Ford vents that I've been working around. The Ford vents are just too big for what we need to do. So... Hello Billet Specialties...

Mike,
I know you already have your head unit - but - there are several new versions out now that are digital media receivers - no CDs or DVDs, just AM/FM plus Bluetooth/Pandora/Ipod/Iphone/Android. If you can give up CDs and DVDs, the units themselves are only about 3" deep. MUCH easier to fit. Here's an example:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_333ASTRDSM/Parrot-ASTEROID-Smart.html
Just a thought.
-Michael
Noooooowwwwww you tell me....!
That looks pretty cool. I'm not married to the CD/DVD. I'll more than likely be using the iPod or Sirius/XM radio anyway. My feeling right now is that I already have everything wired for the Pioneer system that you see in the pics. not sure how much that really matters. I'll know by the end of this week if my current head unit will fit. If not, I'll be digging into this a little deeper.
Thanks Michael.

I stopped by Custom Stitching today. When I walked in and saw that the console aluminum had been removed, I
got a little nervous. Then I realized what I was looking at...
It looks as though the sub-box has been built and test fitted. It was also run to make sure that the speaker throw
didn't make contact with anything that it shouldn't.

Hybrid Audio 6.5" subs perform as well or better than most 10 - 12" subs. Since the GTM is without any space what so
ever, I decided to go this route with the speakers and subs.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1737_zpsea5af25f.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1737_zpsea5af25f.jpg.html)
It's a tight fit; but it fits... It will be secured in place. The console panel will be re-installed using nutserts and #8 screws
placed about every other rivet hole. That way they can be easily removed if needed. It'll be bonded again with silicone
in order to help prevent rattles and/or vibrations. The Audio guy is coming back early next week to "tune" the system
to the car.
Pioneer (AVIC-Z140BH) Head Unit:
CD & DVD playback, Sirius/XM radio, iPhone-5 blue tooth link, iPod connector, and Navigation.
Speakers are from Hybrid Audio. You've never heard such clear music come from such small speakers.
(2) 5 1/4" mid range (Legatia Stage V)
(2) 1" tweeter (Legatia Stage V)
(2) 3" mid range (Legatia Stage V)
(1) 6.5" Sub-woofer Clarus
(1) Arc-Audio 880 watt amp
The head unit will be laid back as far as possible. I want it flush mounted to the console cover insert. But the Sub-box
may be a little tall to allow for the connectors on the rear of the head unit. So we may end up compromising by cutting
the angle in half. That way that unit will not be sticking up so high out of the console.
Deep Breath... Exhale... Repeat...
I was able to see the trim panels for the rear window and the head liner. It's pretty cool how Steve has worked all the
different "layers" of panels and upholstery. There will be no visible screws in the upholstery! Nice and clean.
We pulled one of the hides out to take a look at it, and I have to say it's almost too nice to use. It's some of the softest
leather I've ever felt. Especially for a car...
I am really happy with how everything is coming together.
Stay tuned...

Well... I got a bit of disappointing news today... I have to delay or possibly scratch one of my most important Items off my "GTM bucket list" today.
When I decided to build this car, I really wanted my car to be shown at the Charlotte Auto-Fair with Factory Five & Whitby. Not sure if that will happen or not.
I had also quietly hoped to have it included in Factory Five's display at SEMA. But I guess it wasn't to be. Tony sent a message earlier today, to let me know that they didn't have any room left in the display.
But... We're still planning to go to the Huntington Beach Cruise in, and try to do our West cost road trip, Carlisle, and Finally take my GTM to Charlotte Cars & Coffee in 2015 though. That will be pretty cool.
I'll call Reliable Carriers and start changing up the plans to send it to the West Coast around the Huntington Beach Cruise-In time frame.
Now back to previously scheduled programming...

With the Sub Box in place, we were able to adjust the head unit a bit. We couldn't lay it back to fit flush. But we were able to cut the angle in half, and reduce the amount that sticks up out of the console. It's tough to steal space when there is none to steal. But Steve's doing a great job finding it where-ever he can.

As you can see, the unit was moved down a little into the console. The circle marks the spot where the mounting box was originally welded into place.

Thanks Dave. It's been fun for me also. I drove up to the shop and was excited to see that Steve had all of the interior panels in place. It was pretty cool to see how everything if coming together, and how it all flows. The doors are closer to being finished and are blending well with the dash. The console is really looking nice as well. Everything seems to be working.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1762_zpsaeaf3254.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1762_zpsaeaf3254.jpg.html)
There is still some "fine tuning" that needs to be done, but it's taking a nice shape. I was surprised when I opened the door and felt how much more solid it felt.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1752_zpsdfb58bea.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1752_zpsdfb58bea.jpg.html)
The angles of the console and dash is matched by the leading edge of the door panel recessed panel.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1754_zps6599a609.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1754_zps6599a609.jpg.html)
The dash and the a pilar blend well. The are also blending well with the door panel, though there is still a little work to be done to get them finished up.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1755_zps2f9c478c.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1755_zps2f9c478c.jpg.html)
I love the flow of the dash and console. The console cover was re-installed covering the sub woofer box. It's a little hard to tell, but there are beauty panels for the foot box have been installed. There will be a cover for the heater fan as well. There will also be under dash close out panels (also covered in leather).
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1756_zpsf9a16ce1.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1756_zpsf9a16ce1.jpg.html)

As you can see the Dash, Door, and A-Pilar all meet in a nice tight joint that flows well from one to the other. The top side door foam will be shaved a little more in order to help the visual line from the rear of the door, moving into the dash. Also, since were able to re-position the audio head unit, we have a little more room to fit the original A/C vents. Two of these 3 3/8" vents, versus 3 of the Billet Specialties 2 1/2" vents...

Thanks John. It's becoming fun again! It'll be done before too long.
I'm looking forward to taking it out for a Saturday morning Bonsai (I mean Shakedown) run around Charlotte. Soon!
I had an opportunity to compare my GTM to a Ferrari F430 this weekend. Pam bought me a "Ferrari experience" through Motorsports Labs. They brought an F430, a 360, and a Lamborghini Gallardo. Basically you run a few laps around an abbreviated autocross course at pretty much whatever speed you're comfortable with...
It was brief, but fun. And I had been wanting to drive an F430 so I could get an idea of any similarities and/or differences between it and the GTM. I was really surprised by the sensation that the front wheel were so close to my knees. There seems to be a little more room in the GTM. (At least it feels that way to me).
I do have to say that the F430 has some SERIOUSLY good brakes. You can haul that car down from high speeds to 10 mph in just seconds. It felt very secure.
After driving it I have come to three conclusions...
I really don't care a whole lot for "F1" paddle shifters. I prefer a shifter. (I guess I'm still too old school...)
I thought I wanted to own a Ferrari 430 in the not so distant future. Not so much any more. Don't get me wrong, I still love the car... But, driving it, helped me to realize that I really like my GTM better.
The F430 has always been one of the worlds most raved about Supercars, but I have no doubt at all, that the GTM can be much quicker. If I can make my car hold corners under heavy power like the Ferrari, the GTM would really give it a serious run for it's money.
Pam shot a video with her phone, that I am in the process of uploading to you-tube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx1Jp3qPRDs
Motorsports Labs, also runs a Go-Pro video of your drive. I was told that I'll have that in about a week. I'll post it when I can.
When I first found out that Pam had purchased this for my birthday, I was a little hesitant. But all in all, it turned out to be fun.
Take care,
Mike

The console is making a little more progress. When I got to the shop, I was surprised to see that a design change had been implemented, that i didn't know anything about. Instead of using the round A/C dash vents, we are now using a more oem vent. If i had known that we needed to go this route, I believe that I would have used a set of Aston Martin vents that are flat, instead of round. But with that said, the new vents look really good, in my opinion.
Here are a couple of pictures to show how it's coming along.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1797_zpsa0ce0984.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1797_zpsa0ce0984.jpg.html)
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1801_zps59e03b7a.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1801_zps59e03b7a.jpg.html)
From the top, looking down, the upper section looks huge to me. But it's actually an illusion. The new style vent allows that section to fit much lower than the standard round vents would have.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1804_zpsbb8b65ce.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1804_zpsbb8b65ce.jpg.html)
From the Driver's side... You get an idea of the contour that has been shaped into the piece. Another illusion is the length of the shifter arm. Since the console panel sits on top of another (thin) panel, the shifter arm looks as if it has been shortened. With the leather boot cover, and the UCC shift knob that I am planning to use, it'll look very compact and streamlined, yet give a full range of motion through the shifts.
Billet aluminum Ford GT styled switches will be used for the Windows, Hazard Lights, Hydraulic Lift, and Fog Lights. There will be a "beauty cover" that will fit over the switches and integrate to the Head unit surround. Below the shifter will be the Vintage air control knobs, and below that will be the push button start.
As you can see, the piece has been covered with filler, and sanded smooth. This particular piece will be painted and cleared to a high gloss, to match the color of the gauges. Sort of a titanium gray. I think it is going to look great; especially in contrast with the platinum gray leather on the dash and console.

The door sills are getting some attention as well. New covers have been fabbed that fit over the original aluminum. This is to give a flat and clean surface to apply the carpet and leather to. initial work has been done for the seat belt retractor covers. In the picture, it looks like it was started and then forgotten. But the seats occupy pretty much all of the space from side to side; so this cover is meant to hide the area that you can still see when the seats are in place. They'll be covered in leather as well.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/GTMRevisedDoorSill_zpsebe8f4c4.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/GTMRevisedDoorSill_zpsebe8f4c4.jpg.html)
Replacement Sill on the Left. Original Sill on the Right.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1809_zpse11fda1b.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1809_zpse11fda1b.jpg.html)
The door sills, tank covers, and rear window will all be formed in a way to help seal the interior of the car from the heat, smells, and noise (as much as possible) from the engine compartment. The upper area where the window aluminum "wraps" around the roll bar, will also be closed off by the rear panel and the way the roll bar cover meets the rear panel. That should eliminate a good bit of the harsh sounds and smells. Maybe not all; but a lot.
The Stig

The door panels have been skimmed in "filler" and sanded smooth as well. As you can see, the form for the speaker grill is being shaped and fitted. The grill itself will be pressed into the shape of the form and will give a nice smooth appearance, instead of having the speakers exposed. You can also see in this picture the insert for the door pull just ahead of the handle opening. We originally thought of using billet aluminum piece that would connect the upper and lower sections of the door panel, but using these "cups" are less invasive to the seats and legs.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1806_zps88ef423b.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1806_zps88ef423b.jpg.html)
The filler that Steve is using on the the panels is not the same material that you would use on your body panels when prepping for paint. This is a new formula that is preferred for interior work due to its light weight. You might think that all the panels and parts that have been created and used in this interior project would add a considerable amount of weight to the car. So far we've only added less than 50 pounds of additional weight, not counting the seats. The seats will probably be about 15 pounds each. So we're expecting a cost of about 75 to 80 pounds of total additional weight when all is said and done. Maybe a shade less. And since this is going to be a street car, and not a track car, I'm willing to give up a small amount of weight to be a little more comfortable inside.

Hi Vidal! Great to hear from you! Yes: I was convinced early on, that the members of the interior team were pros, and certainly didn't need me to pretend that I knew more than they did... :) Because I don't...
I feel comfortable to be able to stand back and let them do their thing and accept input from me from time to time, in terms of the look and feel that I want to achieve. It was a good decision for me to put my trust in Steve to do this work. He still seems excited about the project too! I guess it takes a lot more than this to burn him out. That's a good thing.
From what I understand, he's getting some fairly heavyweight followers on his face book page. So that's sort of cool too. I'm not a face-book or twitter person, so I don't really know what goes on there.
I do know that I'm happy with where things are headed, and I definitely feel that the money that I have spent was fair and well worth it. I'd recommend Steve to anyone wanting high quality interior work at a fair price.
Thanks, and take care Buddy!

I almost forgot to mention... The words were actually said, that the Leather and Alcantara will start going onto the panels now that they have been prepped and test fitted. So it seems that we are still on track for getting this project done in the very near future. I can't count the number of times that the panels have gone in, then been taken out and adjusted, and then re-installed. But that's also one of the coolest parts of this interior build. the panels and dash can all be removed without tearing anything apart. They are all made to be removed with no drama, whenever necessary.
I'm pretty stoked about it all.

Not much to share this week. Steve's doing a couple of "side jobs" for a couple of Carolina Panthers. Some quarterback named Cam, and a guy named DeAngelo. No surprise that these guys drive muscle cars. I think Cam rolls in a Chevelle SS, and DeAngelo is driving a 69 Camaro. Pretty cool stuff. I mean, you just can't get a better car-guy name than CAM. Sorry, I don't have pictures.
Another interesting note...
As we were getting ready to leave the shop, Pam looked at Steve and said, "I'll bet you'll be glad to get this Blue thing out of the way, and open up some shop space for the next project. Steve told her that he would like to keep the car in his shop for a few days after it's finished, because he says that he has a growing list of people (potential clients) who would really like to see it when it's finished. He didn't say who...
But to be honest, the thought had never crossed my mind that anyone would have seen it other than here in these posts, or in the CSC Facebook page. Sounds like there may be a small three or four car show at The Custom Stitching Co. Go figure.
The next large project going into the shop, is a very sweet car built by Bill Phillips of Lake Norman. The 33 Hot Rod crowd would know him as "Rumbles" here on the Factory Five Forum. So his car will be at the shop at about the same time...
Sounds like it could be fun times.

LOL!!! I know what you mean. I've wanted to cuss quite a few times through this build. :)
But I've learned a lot about what it really takes to build a car like this. The pictures can be deceiving. You look at them, and it appears that there is still another TON of work that needs to be done. But it is really close to being finished. I asked for two changes to be made this weekend. I hated to do it to him, but they were necessary for me.
One had to do with the door panel at my shoulder. It was crowding me a little, so I asked to have it rolled a little in order to take away a corner that was certainly going to be an issue.
The other had to do with the kick panels. I needed to make sure that there was as much foot room as possible on the driver & passenger sides. I don't have to tell anyone here, that this car comes with major challenges in the foot space department, so I couldn't afford to let it get crowded even more. So we're re-working the panels on each side. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may create another issue, but we'll see in a day or so.
I appreciate the kind words Gene. It's coming along, almost exactly as I have envisioned: or at least as close to it as this car will allow me to get.
Thank you! Enjoy SEMA.

I can't wait to see this mini project completed. I think it's really going to be something else. It'll be fun to just sit in it, much less drive it.
Actually, Steve had originally thought of doing something like that. In the course of the conversation, I told him that there are only 400 to 500 that have been sold, and that would be his market. He quickly changed his mind shortly afterwards. I can't say that I blame him for that.
This has been quite the "mini project". It's been worth it though. And it has been fun to work through; at least for me.

LOL!!! I've not really thought about it that way... My goal for this car all along was to build the exterior true to Factory Five's design without noticeable changes or mods. But the interior of the car was where I planned to splurge a little. I like FFR's design as well. I just wanted to do something different in my car. So far, I think it has been worth the investment. I have to say also, that it has been a blast watching how Steve gets creative in his ability to meet the design goals, and overcome space limitations. We've both had to make compromises, but we're getting there.
You said that you might freak out when it's done... I think I may freak out THAT it's done...!
Thanks for the positive comments. They're very much appreciated.

The engine cover is about ready to be covered. Steve made a sliding cover for storage/cup holders. A little leather and trim work, and it's finished.
I think that the slide will be painted or dyed to match the color of the alcantara.

Door Panels are getting closer. Speaker grills will be pressed and installed this week; I think.
The dash is back out of the car being finish prepped for leather. There should be some finished leather covered panels to show in the next few days.
The headliner and roll-bar covers, and a-pillar covers are ready to be covered and installed.
I'm going to drop in tomorrow, and find out what the plan is for the week.

You may want to get them to touch up the protective tape in some of the areas where it appears to have been worn away on the door sills etc. Its looking good and I can't image how great it must feel being so close to finally having the car you've put so much time and effort into, I can't wait to see the final product.

So, I have to point out something.
The location of the driver in your door, it is mostly pointed into the back of the door panel. Now, you might not care so much, which is fine, of course.
With a little more work, hah hah, they could create a new mount for the driver and use the new thickness of the panel to be able to get it away from the bar inside the door, therefor being able to put it into a new position pointed out the hole. You will get a much better sound out of those Hybrid's.
You know I love you.:)

Hi Gene. Steve is working on that as we speak. It shouldn't take much additional effort to reposition the speakers, exactly as you mentioned. When the initial sheet aluminum was cut and put on the door, the speaker was mounted in the general area that they would be mounted. Once the panels were roughed in, and the speaker opening was cut out, it gave us an idea of how they would need to be adjusted. I mentioned it to Steve last Tuesday, and he was already on it. As usual...
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1859_zps587bdde1.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1859_zps587bdde1.jpg.html)
So... The 5 1/4 Mid-Range, and the 1" tweeter, will be re-positioned, and mounted in the opening so that they point outwards in an unobstructed path. There will also be a 3" driver mounted in each of the kick panels. Each will have custom pressed grills.

The foot box of the GTM is tight, at best. We had to be really careful about what we added to that space, and how much foot room it impacted. We will also be placing an aluminum cover in front of the HVAC fan motor. It will have a screen to allow clean air to be pulled into the fan.

The close-out / beauty panels for the rear quarter windows look really nice. They'll be covered with alcantara, and will blend into the look of the rest of the interior.

The view of the quarter window close-out / Beauty panel. This will allow the window to be cleaned up and neatly covered. (Even though it won't be easily seen due being blocked by the seats.
The upper section of the door panel will extend to the lower aluminum panel, and wrap around behind the seats.
For some reason, it really brought a smile to my face to see these... Go figure.
I guess it was just a reminder of the level of detail that Steve constantly puts into the project. Very cool!

The dash is back out of the car again going through another round of filler build up, and contour sanding. We've gone through 2 gallons of filler, and are starting on another.
The gauge pod, is finally getting some attention as well.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1866_zps2dc920e8.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1866_zps2dc920e8.jpg.html)
For so long, it looked like a turtle shell. Now it's finally looking like the part that it is. The defroster vents are also ready to be installed. You can see a small piece of the close cell foam that will cover the dash panels prior to the application of leather and/or alcantara.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1865_zps3cec0d95.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1865_zps3cec0d95.jpg.html)
This large aluminum panel, will cover the console aluminum and insulation. This will provide a nice smooth surface to apply the foam layer and leather to.
If I ever need to get into the tunnel to work on anything, I won't have to tear apart the work that Steve has done. I can remove this panel (and/or one on the passenger side) as a single piece, with the upholstery in tact.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_1863_zps7c7c415b.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_1863_zps7c7c415b.jpg.html)
Filler is used to help make the sharp edges go away. The will help give a much cleaner look once the foam padding and leather have been applied. Nice, Nice, Nice!!!
Steve gave me date that he feels this car will be completely finished. But I'm not going to repeat it out loud, or post it here, because I don't want to jinx it.
It's really nice to go to the shop and be able see everything in it's current state, and be able to see the finish line so close.
The final mock up, is just around the corner. Gaps will be worked, and then comes the fun part!
Stay tuned.

Wow Stig- Very creative fab work! I can't wait to see it finished. It's going to be spectacular.
Good morning Roberto! Thank you for the kind words. I can't take credit for the fab work; only the picture that I've had in my head from early on, as to what I wanted the interior to look like. Steve Kurzman has done some amazing work in my oppinion, using his creativity and talent to bring my "wish list" to life. He's about as close to dead on as this car will allow.
Dave Smith had actually told me that if my car finished up in time for SEMA that FFR would consider it to be used in the show. We were on track for the car to be ready, but the decision makers said that they didn't want to use it. So we relaxed the schedule a little in order to finish it out the way it should be. Everything happens they way it does for a reason... I guess they figured that we'd be cutting it too close. Who knows?
Steve said that he should be done with all of the finish work on the panels this week. Then a major cleaning is in order to get rid of the dust all over the car and through out the shop. We've heard this a couple of times, but we should start laying leather and alcantara next week, and have the interior finished the week following.
"Rumbles" is patiently waiting for mine to finish so that his can begin...
I've been waiting to see yours when it's done as well. I haven't been online there for a couple of weeks, I guess. How is yours coming along?

Close out panels for the underside of the dash looks awesome! To me, this really cleans up the bottom side of the dash, and the pedal area. The round section to the left is the fuse box cover. The black piece in the center is the hood release. Very clean, and solid.

It's funny that you mention that... She love's going to the shop with me to see the progress. She'll talk to Steve and he'll explain what he's doing and how he did it. And you can tell that he's pretty proud of the way he implemented some of these things. Pam will be right there with him, and then hit him with: "When are you going to start applying the leather?". For her, she will be able to see the "total picture" when the panels are wrapped. I see the structures and see how my mental picture is coming together from the "bones" out.
I think he has come to expect that question from her each time we are there, so he has sort of made it a joke between them. But she's serious.

I am really impressed by the fact that you have been able to keep your vision intact despite the myriad challenges and setbacks you have faced. I just love how all of the details have come together, and it is going to look outrageous!
You are so close, and if I were you, I am not sure I would be able to sleep at night knowing how close it is. I am looking forward to the next couple posts!
Regards,
Steve
Thank you Steve. I really appreciate the support. And oddly enough, I am able to sleep well, because this interior project has gone so smoothly.
I can't wait to see these panels covered in leather, or painted. And... we still have the seats that need to be re-designed. I had originally thought that I would do the seats similar to the Ferrari F12 seats. But after talking to Steve this week, he got me to consider a different approach.
This interior has been custom designed to fit the look, feel, and flow of the GTM. And the F12 seats really scream FERRARI.
So we're going to do something that work with the door panels and the lines of the dash/console.
All the panels have been taken out for the last time, and cleaned. The car has been cleaned out again. And the GTM has been unwrapped and cleaned.

Where you see the black padding, will be covered in leather. Below that will be carpet.
Using the wool carpet in these areas will make the angles in the console aluminum soften up considerably.

The transitions between the roll bar covers and the head liner is really tight. Alcantara for the headliner, a-pillars, roll bar covers.

Here are the first pictures of the GTM panels getting covered with some nice Italian leather, and German wool carpet. The you can see the seam line marked on the dash. The console insert/cover has been primed and sanded, but will likely be sprayed and sanded again prior to being painted Titanium gray, to match the color of the gauge "rings".

We were originally planning to do part of the dash in leather and the other in alcantara. But... the combination didn't look as good on the dash as it did on paper. So now it will be 100% leather.

Wow... I believe that I would have been sitting right there with you & Jim...
I'm not sure that there is a good enough reason to jump off of a building... Even when you're strapped into a harness.
If I can get the credentials, or ticket, or whatever they call it, to get in, Pam & I will more than likely be at SEMA; with or without the car. Obviously it would be cool to have my car be a part of the FFR display, but I'm not holding my breath.
But with that said, I've always thought that it would be a blast to go and experience it first hand though. Maybe we could get Cheney, and some of the others to come out again. There are so many of you guys that I really want to meet. That in itself would be worth going.
But for now, the car is so close to being finished, and on the road, after 5 years of trying to remain focused & patient.

We're trying finalize a design for the seats. We've been back and forth from one design to another. Finally we met and laid out 10 ro so photos on a table and talked through pros and cons and finally settled on an idea.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/GTMSeats1_zps7f95192b.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/GTMSeats1_zps7f95192b.jpg.html)
I couldn't really see the design without the original trim lines getting in the way... So I drew it out.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/BaskinGTMSeat1_zps1b52f6c0.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/BaskinGTMSeat1_zps1b52f6c0.jpg.html)
This is what we are going with. In the drawing, the stitches jump out at you. But the actual stitch is only one shade lighter than the alcantara. So the design will be there without screaming at you. The same design can be seen in the door panels.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/GTMInterior11_zpsf31a2af0.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/GTMInterior11_zpsf31a2af0.jpg.html)
The lines of the door panel will be carried across the two insert panels. Both inserts will be covered in alcantara, and the designs will run from the door handle back as shown. There will be a nice piece of aluminum trim that breaks up the two panels.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/GTMInterior13_zpsf720df8f.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/GTMInterior13_zpsf720df8f.jpg.html)
Carpet is being fit into place. It's really beginning to look like a "finished" interior. Steve said that he plans to make up a nice set of floor mats to help protect the floors.
The design shown on the seat will be changed to the one above. Steve laid the alcantara across the seat to get a feel what the textures and colors will look like in the car. The under-panels are done.
The gauge pod was in the process of being covered when we got to the shop. The Console panel and lower gauge cluster insert are being painted, cleared, and polished a nice titanium gray, which will be a great contrast to the fabrics and brushed aluminum.
The Audio guy will be out this week to tune the system, and give it a "dry run".
Ross, (R & L Customs) will be out to finish the install and set up of the interior lighting throughout the car. It will be well lit by "cool light" LEDs.
I think it's really coming together well.

Another teaser...
Driver's door panel with the speaker grill test fitted. I really like the shape. The wood frame will be sanded, primed, and painted the color of the leather, and then sprayed with a matte clear. The grill will be painted with the same titanium paint that will be used on the console cover, gauges, and door pulls. That should give it just enough contrast that the light colors won't overwhelm the car.
I've said it a few times, but I am really impressed with Steve's work. And I like how this is all finally coming together.

That is one unbelievably fine interior!!! It looks like Lambo/McLaren production quality!
Its really cool seeing the progression from idea to fruition. I do have one question, though its a bit nit-picky. You mentioned about a month or so ago that they used 2 gallons of filler on the dash. How much weight is this interior adding? Not that its a big deal, the GTM is so light, you can afford the weight, its just curiosity. Whatever it is, its worth every ounce, I'd say.;)

12-02-2014, 05:57 PM
Hi Taz,
i know that all of this stuff looks heavy, but it isn't. The door panels are less than 4 lbs each. The covered dash and console, with the gauges, switches, head unit, and sub woofer/box all weigh less than 40 lbs. the seats are about 15 to 17 lbs ea.
So we aren't adding nearly as much weight to the car as it appears.
The filler that he used is very light weight, and most of it was sanded back out.
It's very deceiving. But very strong and very functional.
Take care Buddy.

You're right. I had some reservations about making it the same color as the other surfaces. But, then I decided that if it started to discolor, I would consider having it re-covered with a darker charcoal colored leather.
For now, I'm going to let it ride, and see how I like it.

Steve suggested that we think about using a version of the GTM logo on the cover. I didn't really want to do the Factory Five logo, because I already have it on the intake cover. So he had them copy the GTM emblems on the wheels. It's stitched in the same color as the leather to keep it subtle.
It should be placed just a tad below the center of the upper "square", if that makes any sense...

Believe it or not, this was actually the first Metallica song I've listened to from start to finish. And it sounded freakin' awesome.

Mike,
The interior looks stunning! I have been following your build through its multiple trials and tribulations, and from I what I can see, the wait (pain?) was worth it. I know during the process things can feel bogged down and slow, but once you drive your car you will forget all that and never feel slow again! The shop that's doing your interior has done an exceptionally good job. It's nice to see craftsmen that take pride in their work.
Fabulous!

Michael, Thank You! You're right, there have been times when I wondered when I would get through all the different things that I've put into this car, and all the highs and lows that have come along with it. It took me a long while, but I finally realized that these types of issues come along with this sort of project.
When I started working with Steve, the build got a lot more fun for me. For two resons... I was finally 100% involved in the design and execution again. And I am working with someone who is honest above all else, and is extremely talented and a true craftsman. I could not be more happy with how it's all coming together. He has absolutely surpassed my expectations.
Again, Thank you.
Bet your starting to feel better about trading in your Bugatti Veyron for this!
Gary...! It's good to hear from you! LOL, yep... I'm feeling pretty good about the car again. As far as the trade from the Veyron to the GTM, I would like it more if it wasn't such a 1 to 1 trade...
Looks like I may finally be able to make it up to the open house, the year. It would be awesome if we could get together and take the cars out for a run at some point.
I'll talk talk to you soon.

Here's a picture of the console cover after being painted. (Titanium Gray). It really came out clean.

Just to give an idea of the colors. This cover is really going to pop against the leather panels.

The seats are coming along nicely as well. Here's a picture of one of the seat bottoms to show the stitching and design.

The Drivers side foot box cover and painted speaker ring. The speaker grills will be painted the same color as the console cover.
It really looks clean when the lower dash close out panels and the fuse box cover are installed.

Steve says that he has the Tank Covers, Engine Cover, and Seat-belts in the car; as well as the side panels, and rear quarter window close outs.
Sean, the audio pro, came out again and started tuning the system. Apparently I have a concert hall in my GTM now... Who knew? He's supposed to come back by and finalize the settings after the Windshield in re-installed.
Ross Frick, the Porsche Guru and electrical pro, has been working on the interior lighting to get it scaled just right. Ross is the person who took the time to Re-wire the GTM for me, and make sure that everything is done as it should have been the first time.
I can't wait to drop by the shop and see how everything looks tomorrow.

Thank's Taz. You know, It's funny... My wife used to kid around with Steve about wanting to see leather on the panels. Now she goes straight to the car to touch the leather on the seats or the door panels, or the dash, etc. It really is pretty soft though. So I can't really blame her.

Hi Buddy! Thanks. I am so ready to be able to post some "finished" pictures, that show the entire interior installed. It's so close... I think that Steve's ready for it to be done also. He's been working it pretty hard for a while now. A lot of late nights and weekends.

I thought it would be a good idea to provide som UV protection for the Leather and Alcantara. So Steve put me in touch with a local company that handles a bit of the high-end stuff in the Charlotte area. I am not a fan of the Blacked-out look as far as windows go, but I do like a smoked look. So we went with a Ceramic tint that will block UV rays and reflect heat away from the interior. The look is that smoky look that darkens the glass a little, but still allows you to see in and out easily.
The doors and quarter windows have what you see. The Windshield will have a clear ceramic Tint that also reflects UV and heat, but remains virtually clear.
It's kind of tough to tell by the picture, but I think it's going to look nice.

Thank you Leonard. Much appreciated!
I'm honestly not sure that I have gone through any more than anyone else that takes on a project like this. But I can say for certain that it has taught me a different way to approach how I trust people.
I've always been the type to trust people, no matter what, until they give me a reason not to. That approach has definitely changed. I'm still willing to trust, but it comes with a bit more caution now.
It's sort of sad, but it's the reality behind the business of building one of these cars. People just aren't always what they want you to believe. Nor what you might want them to be. That's also sad.
With this interior project coming to it's completion, I feel comfortable saying that The Custom Stitching Co, owned by Steve Kurzman, is one of the good honest companies that you can put your trust into. I'd certainly recommend them to anyone interested in going this route.
I don't mean to go off on another tangent. But I've noticed quite a few people that have made comments about all the things that I've "endured" or "had to go through" during the course of this project. And it is true that I have run across two or three situations where the owners of those company's will never have to worry about whether I will darken their doorway again... But I don't feel that it has happened any differently for me than it has for any other builder in the pages of the forums in this website. I have no doubt, that anyone here has a few stories of their own that they could tell.
It's just the world we live in, combined with eager but novice builders, jumping head first into a dream and an industry that we didn't know a whole lot about beforehand.
Sometimes, you really do have to learn the hard way.
But I do have to say again, Thank you. Having gotten the car to this point (finally), it means more than you can know, to to hear the kind words that you and others here (that I respect so much) have sent my way.
Take care Buddy.

Hi Gene,
Thank you again! You're right; I can't believe that it has finally gotten to this point. Your getting close also. I'm looking forward to seeing yours when it's done. Your videos have allowed me to feel that I was part of your build...
Steve was very careful working in and around the car. He truly believes in leaving things in better shape than when he started. He has worked around Hot Rods, Street Rods, and Classics for quite a white, and treats other people's cars with the respect that you would expect.
By the way, Gary Cheney came up with an awesome idea for a driver's suit to keep the seats clean... Maybe I'll keep it to myself and surprise everyone. :)
Of course, being "The Stig", I should pretty much already have my own driver's suit that would work...

Holy @&%#=## Mike. That looks awesome!!!!! Kudos to you for envisioning that interior and for finding the guy with the skills to make it. You are going to have one sweet ride in a very short time.
Thanks Hugo!
I'm pretty pumped about it. When I walked up to it, and saw everything all together... I was blown away. I've only seen it with "completed" sections installed, in various level of completion. I knew that the individual components looks great, and I had "picture" of what I thought it might look like when it was all brought together... But I wasn't really ready for it when I saw it.
I was doing a great job of keeping the drool from hitting the floor, as I walked around and around the car, soaking in the view that I had in front of me. The Steve fired up the (Concert Hall) sound system. That was it... I was done. Reduced to a slobbering wreck. I had to get myself back together.
Seriously though, seeing this car with this interior, was the second best Christmas present that I got this year. ;)
Working with Steve was fun and a pleasure. And I couldn't be more proud of the result.
More to follow...

Thank you Steve,
The pictures make the color of the leather look like an off-white color. It really is Gray. But I agree, the lighter color does make everything seem larger.
Looking forward to Huntington Beach!
By the way, I got a few quotes on transporting the car to California for that weekend... $2k +, each way... (But we'll be there).

Thank you...! I think...
I'm taking it as a compliment! :)
I have tried to make sure that this build is done to the best level that I can manage, and afford...
I keep telling myself to stay as much "inside the box" as possible.
I decided early on that I was going to stay as close to Jim Schenk's design as possible, as far as the exterior is concerned.
But the interior would be where I splurged. And I did. :)
I was told over and over that you can't do this, and you can't do that... That's why no one else has done it before...
Well, I figured that I was going to see for myself whether some of these things could be done or not.
As it turns out, it seems that they can!
Thanks for the kind words!

The custom hatch that you fabbed for me, is next on the list. When the car leaves Steve's shop, it's going to a highly recommended paint shop to have a couple of scratches and rubs color matched and fixed.
They will also be painting the new hatch, and clearing the CF cover. It's happening, and I can't wait to send you the photos!

Steve did an amazing job. He was really on a mission throughout the entire interior project, to show what could be done with the GTM and similar cars. He also wanted to showcase the sort of work that he and his shop are capable of producing. In my oppinion, there are very few shops in the US that can match his work.

I have run out of superlatives! The car is simply stunning. I have admired your vision, but also your willingness to stay the course when you had a number of opportunities to give-in to the "it can't be done" crowd. It is without question, worth staying myopic and insisting it could be done. You have certainly showed us all, and I congratulate you!
My best wishes to you and Pam in 2015. You have certainly ushered in the year in a major way; and while the GTM is the rock star as you say, I kind of think you two will be seen as rock stars as well!

Thanks guys. The response to this interior has been overwhelming to say the least (for me & Steve). He says that his phone hasn't stopped ringing, and that easily 50% or more of the calls have to do with questions and/or congratulations for his work on my car. He has booked out 8 or 9 new custom jobs if I understood him correctly. And I'm happy for him. Good job!
Still waiting to get the windshield tinted and installed. Apparently, the painted edges aren't cooperating with the tint, and have had to be re-worked a couple of times. But they expect to have it handled soon. Then Sean will be back out to do a final tune of the audio system. At that point the the interior project will be 100% complete.
Next step was supposed to be to have the car sent to Scott Auto body, here in Charlotte, to fix a couple of scratches and chips in the paint. But... they apparently either don't have time in their schedule or just can't take on new work for a while...
So I think I'll send it to have the suspension dialed in, while I figure out what "plan-b" for the paint work will be.
Fun Fun Fun...

Wow...! Thank you both! But you guys are killing me. The GTM is a super-model? Ok, I guess I can see that.
I'm pretty sure that Dave wouldn't want to pay what I would need to get for it. But maybe we can still use it to sell more GTM kits... That would be up to Dave & Factory Five. They're not too easy to get on the phone. Thank God for Sally!
I just heard that a Yellow GTM was sold at Barrett-Jackson last week for $106,700.00. Does anyone know who's car that was? I always like to try and keep up with GTM's that go through there.

Just kidding (for now)...
I do have some definite plans for this car, which absolutely include enjoying it for a while.
Huntington Beach Cruise In, Factory-Five Open House, Carlise, and SEMA if I can figure out how to make that happen. It looks like Reliable Carriers is about to make some money from me this year...
I guess if I go to HB with it, I'll miss the Charlotte Auto-Fair due to Carrier scheduling.

Well, it looks like the GTM will be leaving The Custom Stitching Co., tomorrow morning at 9 am, and going to a Porsche ALMS Race shop in Denver, NC., to have the suspension dialed in.
They'll be insuring that Ride height, Bump Steer, Corner weight/balance, and FFR alignment specs are achieved. Sounded a little pricey, but then... what hasn't been on this car?
I was given this contact from Chris Porter of Detroit Speed, Inc., who was actually referred to me by Ron (Presto) her on the forum! Thank you Ron for your help. Chris was a wealth of information, and I have a strong feeling that we may be working together on a future 1962 Corvette project that I've been thinking about.
From the suspension race shop, to Crazy Horse Painting in Waxhaw, NC, (about 10 miles from my house), to have the scratches and chips corrected, and to have the rear hatch prepped and painted.
I'm realistically seeing about 2 to 3 weeks and this car will be completely finished! I never thought I would see the day...
Now let's see how this actually plays out.

Mike,
I'm glad everything seems to be working out. Can't wait to see your GTM either at the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals or FFR Open House, heck maybe booth
At this point maybe you should give your GTM a project a name instead of just calling it the GTM sounds kind of impersonal and heck she's more than that, maybe the forum can have a naming contest. Let me be the first and call her Miss Adventure

LOL... That's too appropriate!
Maybe you're right. It might be fun (and a little scary) to see what our friends here might come up with.
Now you did it. JINX!!!! It's like putting your tools up before you finish working!
As a matter of fact, I just spent some time in the garage straightening up, and putting tools away!
I had the car moved from Steve's shop this morning (and paid the final invoice...), so we're turning the page to the next chapter of the GTM (sorry... "Miss Adventure") Saga. But before we do, I have to say Thank You to Steve Kurzman of The Custom Stitching Co. I couldn't have asked for a better experience than we had working with Steve. I would recommend him to anyone wishing to have a quality interior designed and installed. He will definitely be doing any work on any car that I might build from now on.
Now "Miss Adventure" as Ron suggests, is sitting in a fairly pristine Race shop where ALMS Porsches are being maintained. I have to say that it looked pretty cool along side Race cars and current Street Porsche's. It always amazes me to see how much lower the GTM is even next to other sports cars.
Ahhh... When we were ready to get "Miss Adventure" out of the trailer, it was fairly obvious that I was going to have a tough time getting back into the car to back it out. So we found one of the guys in the shop who obviously hadn't tried as many of the restaurants around Charlotte as I have lately. He wedged his way in with little trouble and expertly steered it down the ramp. Since he was already inside, he fired up "Miss Adventure" and pulled her into the shop. It was the first time that I had ever seen anyone else drive "her".
It was really cool to see it in motion, and to hear the rumble of the Kooks exhaust as it passed. I had a pretty proud moment right about then...
Once it was inside, the guys there gathered around to look it over, and seemed genuinely impressed. There were the usual "What is it" questions. Then, the owner of the shop spotted the G50/01 "Porsche" gear-box, which, I think, allowed me into their club.
It was fun to spend a little time with them this morning.
We went through the short list of items that they'll be doing for me:
- Setting ride height to 4 1/2 inches front and rear.
- Adding a couple hundred pounds to the driver's seat, and Dialing in the corner weight and balances.
- Setting the bump steer.
- And then dialing in the alignment, using the FFR specs. Except for one...
- We're also installing the alignment shims/locks that Crash sells.
- We decided to start with 0 toe-in., and see how that feels, and then adjust if needed.
In the meantime, I'm eager to hear what you all think I should "name" The GTM... Although I have to say that Ron came out of the gates with a great one!

I stopped by the shop today, to see how the alignment process was going...
Ride height has been set. 4". Corners have been perfectly balanced, The rear tow and camber has been set. Front tow has been set. But as I already knew, there is no caster to be had with the standard configuration of the upper control arm mounts...
He was explaining how the C5 corvettes use the flat mounts for the upper arms that allow for shims to be used to create camber and caster. I told him that this is simply how the upper mounts were designed. Not much I can do about it, unless I start cutting off the locator tabs and then weld in some different locator mounts.
Personally, I think it makes a lot of sense to do, but I don't know if I want to spend the time and money to redesign the front suspension right now. I'm going back tomorrow morning. So I figure that I might as well talk it through a get an idea of how much time and money it would take to make the changes... And then decide if I'd like to do it or not.
The most recent re-design that I put into the GTM cost me close to $30k.

My suggestion would be for you to get as much caster as you can and then DRIVE IT. THEN if it needs some adjustments go through the process of moving the mounts. I'm a big believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" when it comes to things like suspension adjustments.
At this point, what do you have to lose by trying it the way it is? On the other hand, it could end up being VERY expensive to change it and do it right.

Hi Mike (Crash),
Actually, it's funny that you mention that. That's the short term plan.
I think the direction that I am going to take is pretty much defined now. Based on a recent conversation that I had with a friend, I think that a real solution may be on the horizon.
So, I've asked the guys at the shop to do their best to get me as much caster as they can, and still match both sides.
Then when these parts are available, I'll make the switch, and then take it back to them to have the car re-aligned again.
Camber, Caster, and Tow will be set as close to C5/C6 specs as possible.
The GTM handles well with the alignment that we can achieve with "stock" configuration. If the real target caster and camber can be reached, it should handle "like it's on rails".
And... when it's all said and done, it may not be as expensive as you think.
We'll see.

I'm planning to have the inspection re-done in order to have the car registered.

I'm curious to know whether or not anyone has had any issues with the steering u-joint set screws?
The guys were going through the bolts to make sure that everything on the suspension has been torqued to spec, and started to check the set screws in the joints. As soon as they put any pressure on them to check tightness, they cracked... As well, the joints are rusting.
So... I'm having them replace the joints and set screws to a higher grade parts.
Therefore... Another day or so before it comes home.

Front and rear is set at 4.0".
He he said that the set screws may have been over stressed in an attempt to get them seated against the steering rod.
Do you or anyone else here drill a spot on the rod for the screws to fit into?
I just can't imagine these joints and screws rusting and failing simply because they got wet. Suspension parts tend to get wet from time to time. Maybe some anti-seize on the set screw would protect it more from the elements...
Sounds like I may also need to make sure that the underside is completely closed off from water getting in. The radiator needs to be closed off better around the sides and bottom as well.

Can anyone here tell me what the measurement from the flat panel where the fuel sender is mounted, to the bottom of the tank on the Custom Aluminum Tanks that a bunch of us picked up? I need to replace the fuel sender, and need to know how long the tube needs to be.
Thanks

Ok. I pulled the fuel sender from the tank and measured the depth from the inside bottom of the tank to the upper mounting surface where the sender mounts. I measured 14 7/8". The sender length is 14.0". So the fuel gauge will read empty at 14" leaving about 2 gallons "reserve".
The fuel sender that came with my tanks, was made by Centroid Products. It doesn't use a float based resistor to measure ohms. It measures by capacitance. The tube is 1/2" hollow aluminum. And apparently as the fuel level drops, the pressure changes in the tube. The change in pressure is translated to ohms resistance.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_2431_zpsybjvjfrz.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_2431_zpsybjvjfrz.jpg.html)

The Centroid sender is rated at 15/160 ohms: (15 empty to 160 full). The gauges that come with the GTM kit are 16 /158. So there is some difference, which could translate to a bit of a difference in how the gauge reads. But not enough to warrant switching the fuel sender out, just because... But if you do find the need to change it, you'll need a 14" tube style sender, rated at 16 / 158 ohms.
I'm switching mine because my fuel gauge and sender aren't matched, and therefore aren't reading correctly. So Classic Instruments is making sure that my instrument movements and senders are all matched.
Switching to Classic Instruments Fuel Sender: 16/158 ohm Tube Sender (14"). Uses the "aftermarket" 5 screw installation.
240/33 is their standard resistance pattern. 16/158 is a special order item, and runs about $200.00.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/Classic%20Instuments%20Tube%20Fuel%20Sender_zps8kd kqjst.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/Classic%20Instuments%20Tube%20Fuel%20Sender_zps8kd kqjst.jpg.html)
The water temp sensor was installed on a 3" aluminum adapter, which holds the sensor out of the coolant flow. Therefore, the temperature that was being shown wasn't the actual temp of the coolant that was being circulated. The correct sensor is being shipped that will install directly to the cylinder head with the probe directly in the coolant flow.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/IMG_2428_zpsgdz0st9h.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/IMG_2428_zpsgdz0st9h.jpg.html)

Once I have the water temp sending correct temps to the gauge, I can get the coolant lines clear of air bubbles and getting the constant engine temp regulated again. Then I'll take it out on the road and get tachometer calibrated...
it seems like there is always a list of items to take care of in order to get this thing finished up. But it's getting there.
It goes to the paint shop on the 8th. The rear hatch will be prepped, painted, and installed. I can not wait to see how it ties the rear of the car together without the second hump, or the gaps.
The scratches will be corrected and GONE! The splitter, rocker extensions, hatch vent cover, and diffuser will all be sprayed with 3 more coats of clear, wet sanded, and then polished out.
The GTM should be finished with ALL work 2 weeks before the transporter gets here to take it to Huntington Beach.
Oh yeah...! The parts for the suspension rework are done, and if time permits, I'll switch them out and get the front end re-aligned.. With this new configuration, camber and caster can be set at whatever I want. So 5 degrees of negative caster will be the goal.
When I get it back from HB, it'll go back to the Interior shop for some tweaking on the halo covers; particularly, the front roll bar cover. It drops down a tad further than expected, cutting down on my field of vision. It's going to have to come up at least 1". That's the only thing that I can think of right now that I would change. Period.

The owner of the paint shop came by to pick up the GTM.
I was was able to get some work done on it.
The wing and mounts were installed and centered.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/image.jpg2_zpswj3qh1oy.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/image.jpg2_zpswj3qh1oy.jpg.html)

The new coolant temp sensor was installed. I disconnected the upper radiator hose and filled it with coolant, then reconnected the line. I opened the cap on the overflow tank as well as the vents for the heads. I also opened the pitcock valve on the radiator overflow. Filled the system until coolant ran from the head vents. Closed them off, and continued to fill the system until the main overflow tank was 1/2 full. Then I closed the petcock valve on the radiator overflow.
Still waiting for the replacement fuel level sender. (That will take a couple of weeks).
Re-installed the current sender, and re-crimped a new connector to the sender wire. Re-installed the computer, and fired it up. I turned the HVAC to full heat, and let it run for a bit. It ran up to 200, then 220, and kept climbing. So I shut it down.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/image.jpg3_zpsiukjcbdr.jpg (http://s210.photobucket.com/user/jmichaelbaskin/media/image.jpg3_zpsiukjcbdr.jpg.html)
Apparently, I still have air in the system. But man, does that heater work well...! The lower radiator hose, gets hot. The upper hose gets warm. Before, it was cold after I brought the engine temp up. So I think I'm making progress. I think...
When I get it back, I'll park it on the slope of my driveway, with the engine up, and then heat cycle the system a few times to see if I can get the air to come up to the overflow tank. (My driveway slopes at about 33 degrees. Pretty steep.)
The list of "things to do" is getting much smaller. I can't wait the see the car when it's done. I especially can't wait to see the rear hatch.
So far, everything is still on schedule for Huntington Beach.
We'll see you there.

As you can see, the hatch is ready to be prepped and fitted. Just to the right of the hatch, is the diffuser. We're going to spray the raw side with a few coats of clear, and then wet sand it to give it a nice finish. The rocker extensions and the splitter will also be getting a couple more coats of clear, and will be polished out to give them more depth.

The rear wing is going to be re-worked to get rid of the high's and lows to make it flat. The rear section of the roof will be re-worked as well to correct some serious ripples that shouldn't have been there.
With the compound curved shape of the GTM's roof, it's tough to get them perfect. But where the curves flatten out to the rear hatch area, could have been prepped better before it was painted. So now it will be.
We also have a machinist on tap to mill out some custom covers for the door latches.
With the amount of time and money and emotion that I've invested into this car, I want to make sure that it is finished out right. When I have the car professionally photographed, I want to see the nice crisp reflection lines. I think it will look nice when it is done.
Anthony has a history of doing some seriously high-end cars. So I'm thinking that my little GTM will turn out just fine... Finally.

Hi Vidal!
Yep, the cars have been chasing each other around. The interior shop was by choice. But this time it was by chance. Bill had told me the name of this shop, while our cars were finishing up at Steve's shop. But to be honest, I completely forgot the name. If I don't write things down right away, I tend to forget. I had planned to take the car to Crazy Horse Painters. But I couldn't get in touch with them, and really didn't want to chase them down in order to get permission for them to paint my car...
There is a company here in the Charlotte area called RK Motors that specialize in classic cars, muscle cars, street rods, restorations, etc. Full paint, body, and interior shop. Or at least they used to be... They sort of broke up the different parts of the business, and now focus on Sales and restorations.
Steve Kurzman originally worked for them before he started The Custom Stitching Co. You've seen what he can do...
Ross, my wiring guy, worked for Porsche in Tampa and here in Charlotte. Then went to work at RK Motors. Then he started his company (R & L Customs).
When I called RK Motors to see if they still did body and paint work, they said no. but then he gave me the phone number of the guy that they send all of their paint and body work to. Anthony Kutas, owner of Dents Charlotte. It's a small unassuming shop. But he is well regarded in the area. RK Motors, and Richard (The King) Petty's custom shop use him regularly.
So when he came to my house to have a look at the GTM, he asked me if I had ever heard of a car called an SLC. I figured that Bill's was the only SLC in the Charlotte area, and i new he was sending his car to be painted. So I asked Anthony if he was doing Bill's car... And he seemed a little surprised that I not only knew what and SLC was, but that I also knew Bill. So I told him that our cars had both just had interiors done at the same shop, and now we're in the same paint shop...
I sent a note to Bill to let him know that I'm really not stalking hm or his car. But I do think it's pretty cool that we've ended up in the same places along the course of our builds.
It's always a cool picture to have both cars in the same shot.
Vidal, I hope that you're doing well. I talked to Michael recently and am excited to be one of the guys that are using the Upper control arm kit that he has come up with. I got the last parts on Friday, and can't wait to switch the upper C5 control arms for the new arms. Can't wait to dial-in the actual camber/caster that this car needs.
Still looking forward to getting together soon.
Take care,
Mike

Mike,
Your car will be the new "benchmark" for fit, finish, and overall coolness! See you ( and THE car ) at Huntington Beach in April.
Cheers, Jeff
Wow... Thank you Jeff. I appreciate the kind words. But in all honesty, I am really just eager to get it finished. 5 years, is long enough to wait... When the car comes back from the paint shop, it will probably be rolling straight onto a hauler to head west. It's going to be very tight, but we're still good with the schedule.
We're are really looking forward to being a part of the Huntington Beach cruise in, and meeting so many of our forum friends.
Take care, and we'll see you in HB.

Thank You Dave. I really appreciate the compliments, more than you know. But to be honest, I'm really just eager to get it "finished" and on the road. I am amazed by the positive responce that this car is generating. I really had 't expected anything like this.
Pam & I are looking forward to seeing you guys as well. Hopefully there will be tome for us to get together and have dinner. I' e wated to get out there and meet our forum buddies for some time.

I was really surprised to see the size of the high spots in the first pass of the re-blocking process on the roof. Maybe it's just me, but these seem pretty large for a "finished roof.
The white spots are "highs" that were enough to lift the long sanding block. The "dull" areas are lows.

Looking back across from the other side... When I was there last Friday, we set the lights up on each side, and the highs were obvious. Without the light, you could see them but not quite as obvious. But the sanding block doesn't lie.
When Anthony is done, it'll be "flat". When the paint is laid back down, and we see the polished finish, we should see some nice clear and reflection lines.

"Miss-Adventure" sits outside the entrance of the "Dents Charlotte" shop. It's unsettling to think that a car with only 4 miles on the odometer would need to go back into the paint shop. But here she sits...

Scratches, Roof, Rear Hatch, and the Wing are all getting worked, or RE-worked... I feel like I've have too much time, emotion, and money invested in her to not correct the things that should be corrected. I initially thought I would just have a few scratches corrected. But it really needed a bit more...
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb94/jmichaelbaskin/GTM%20Roof%20First%20Primer_zps8if7kp0v.jpg
The roof has been sanded flat. It looks like a mess right now, but that was the starting point. Looks like we're getting close to the goal now. I am absolutely blown away by the size of the high spots on the roof.

It's pretty obvious by the sanding marks that the highs and lows of the wing surface were fairly extreme. It looks like ripples in a pool of water. When we shined the lights across it, is looked like cellulite on a fat bottomed girl.

The roof is in the first coat of primer. Looks like a good start. Looks like a crisp line along the roof edge.

The rough sanding of the wing is complete. Time to get the to the detail work...
Anthony says that the hatch is next in line. He'll start the trimming process to get it fitted to the car. I bought a replacement set of hinge parts, and got them cleaned and painted so they'll be ready to use on the new hatch. I can't wait to see how it fits the car.
Of all the custom parts on this car, this custom hatch by Jason Cecil (Carbon Fiber), is one that I've really looked forward to for some time: almost as much as the interior. He really went above and beyond to help me come up with a great solution to achieve flat lines and better engine heat dissipation. Thanks Jason.

I've heard that story also, although I can't remember who posted it. I've been a little wary of that latch ever since.
I'm looking into using a Ferrari 355 rear hatch latch. I like the design and it seems to be a little stronger.
I've also thought of using a corvette hood latch from 63-67. Similar design as the "kit" latch, but stronger.
We'll see soon.

I stopped by the shop this afternoon. Tony is starting on the hatch, and getting it fitted to the car. So I took the newly painted hinges to him. The original set was bare metal. So while the car was still in the interior shop, I went ahead and ordered the new parts. I painted them "chassis black" so they won't stand out as much when you look into the engine bay. That always bothered me when I opened the hatch. Now it won't.
The scratches around the doors have been sanded and prepped for paint.
The wing and the roof have both been primed and sanded back out; and a glass smooth. The high spots have been brought down, and the low areas that surrounded the highs, have been filled with primer and sanded smooth. Now they'll be primed again, and sanded again...
Tony says that the car should be ready for paint around Wednesday, and potentially done by Friday. Sounds a "little" optimistic.
Maybe because I'm not used to having anything on this build come in AHEAD of schedule. :)

Well... Guess who's GTM wasn't finished today... Three cars from RK Motors came in which took priority since my car is a side job from his work with them. I'm not thrilled, but I guess I get it. But I was pretty pumped about having it finished and back in the garage tonight. Since next weekend is Easter, he says that my car should be done the week after. So 4/11 range. Time is starting to get tight, but there is still a bit of a window. If it slips beyond then, I'm going to be in a heavy time crunch.
It's right about now that I wish I had a nice Silverado LTZ, and a 28' Haulmark... In time.

Thanks Dave. I'm not really that frustrated. When we were there, and he told us that it would be done "on Friday", I was a little surprised that it would be done sooner that we thought. I was breathing a little easier, knowing that I would have a week or so before I had to be ready to turn it over to Reliable Carriers for the ride over. Now we're back to our narrow window.
How's the paint going on your car? Were you able to get the body back home?

Can anyone tell me the size of the allen-head screws that are currently used on the gas filler assemblies? I thought my car would be home and I could just pull one of the wood screws out and run to fastenall to get some. They look like 8's or 10's, but I'd like to know for sure.
Apparently mine were installed using some wood screws... With nothing on the back side to hold them secure... Go figure.

So I need to replace the wood screws with actual allen-head screws, and locking nuts. I thought of making a set of backing plates, but I think that washers should be good to keep the back side of the fiberglass stable.

When I received my kit several years ago, FFR mistakingly included the Mark IV gas caps instead of the GTM ones. The GTM body is molded for the type gas cap that Mike showed in his post. If yours is very different I'd make sure it fits the GTM and that it wasn't a mistake.

They are the same as mine. They look like the old style but the main body is one piece and the center is separate. They are from Newton Equipment - Aero 300 model. The screws are #8 and the head is 12-32" wide, The total length is 20-32". (16-32" thread length) I'm betting there is a place in g-boro that you're liking less by the day. Those wood scews are plain ridiculous. Don't forget to get them in stainless steel too so they won't rust.

From what I understand, there were a hand full of filler assemblies where the inner and outer pieces broke apart, or separated in some way. So Factory Five replaced the ones that came apart with a single piece version that Jason mentioned in the previous post. They probably do look a little different. I thought of switching them out, but figured that since mine haven't broken or separated that I'd just hang onto them. But who knows? I may be replacing these as well before it's all said and done.

Hi Gary,
What is causing these things to come apart? Is it from the fuel nozzle pushing against them when filling up with gas? Or do they just break apart over time?

The filler cap was meant to have a backing plate to bolt onto. The right one is the old style. The caps look to be silver soldered together and when you stick the fuel filler in, it just breaks away. In the picture I made a plate that would hold the bottom to the top and sandwich them to the fiberglass. I also had to make a gasket as a filler. This worked good but then my painter decided to sand the top of one to contour the body. I had to buy 2 of the new styles. They are one piece construction and they do look better than the old ones.

I've been looking around for a tank that I can use as an overflow for the radiator. I have a small "bottle" tank on it now, but it really doesn't fit the space very well. It forces the connecting hose to the bottom of the radiator, and then back up to the top where it connects to the over flow spout. I've been trying to get the air out of the system for a while, and I figured that I would go ahead and use the corvette overflow, and be done with it. This would give me a port on each end of the system to purge the air. 16 lb caps on each end.
I found an aluminum tank from Canton Racing Products that is a direct replacement for the C5 tank.
I'm thinking of having it powder-coated coy-black to match the wiper fluid, and hydraulic lift tanks. I can do that and have them back before the car is done at the paint shop...

Obviously, the tank bolts to the tabs on the GTM frame rail, just as the original C5 tank does. I need to make a brace that bolts to the lower rail, and attaches to the support tab on the bottom of the tank.

I stopped by the paint shop today. I was told to expect the car to be finished today or tomorrow. But the schedule was changed a little, and now it's going to be next weekend.
So with that in mind, I thought I would post a few pictures of the hatch being fitted to the car. It's very rough at this point. The edges have been trimmed little by little, until the hatch fit into the body. There is still a bit of work to be done to get the edges lined up with the body. Nothing major, just a couple of adjustments and a little "persuasion" of the upper and lower panels to get them to sit down into the body flush.
The hinges have been installed and are working fine. I'm using the "Gen-2 GTM" latch. But the bracket doesn't work with the Gen-1 GTM. So I'm having a bracket made that will support the latch solidly.
The Diffuser and Rear Hatch carbon Fiber cover have been sprayed with a couple of coats of "House of Kolor" clear, made specifically for carbon fiber panels. Even before they've been wet sanded and polished, they looked pretty nice. The Splitter & rocker extensions are next.
The hatch will be "slotted" to allow the wing supports to extend through. As well, when the hatch is adjusted to sit down into the body a little more, we'll probably end up needing to build up the leading edge to match the rear roof line.

Not thrilled, but what do you do? I suppose I just keep going through my to-do list.
The coolant system is going to be pressure purged to remove any air pocket(s). If I still see the water temps trying to overheat, I'll install the C5 Tank.
Install the Wiper Arm, Fluid Tank, and Wiper Motor.
Replace the upper control arms, and re-align the front wheels.
Replace the hydraulic reservoir for the RamLift system.
Bleed the RamLift lines and lift pucks.
Reinstall the diffuser.
Register the car. Get the title & tag. (Personalized Plate)
Etc., Etc., Etc.

Mike,
Seems like the guy is giving you the run-around. When did last tell you it would be ready today or tomorrow? If he was sincere about it, he would be MUCH farther along than he is right now. Is he blending or doing a full re-paint?
Im not sure I would be so nice. Tell him you have allot of people watching your thread and some of them like me are getting pissed at the way you are being treated. You dont have to be the jerk, I will be for ya :D. If he doesnt get his act together and deliver I will make it my mission to let people know he cant be relied on and steer clear!
Are you guys still heading this way if the car isnt done, or are you going to pass on it?

Mike you asked "When you look through these pictures, what comes to mind?"
For me your guy should of started off with the most difficult part to work with for proper fit, and that would have be the hatch. After that is correctly installed and working, then he could after the wavy roof, wing, and the hatch all in one fell swoop.
If I remember correctly didn’t you have some imperfections on the front end to you wanted taken care of? If so prepare for a possible all over paint job.

Hi Dave,
Thank you. You (and Gary Cheney) have been in my corner ever since I started this project, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Pam says that she knows that you must be worn out by now... :)
Once I committed to building this car, the first actual parts that I bought for it, were the billet seat mount brackets that you made. We didn't end up using them, because we didn't use those seats. So I still have them outside on my work bench.
I guess from the outside looking in, it does seem like more of the same stuff. Tony seems sincere when he says that the car will be done by the date he mentions, but then he'll get two or three cars from RK Motors or Richard Petty, and then my car gets put on hold until he can move them back out. In a way I get it, since these companies help to provide the main income for his shop, and they feed him a constant flow of business. As a result, he doesn't have to advertise, and he is turning business away. (I was actually referred to him BY RK Motors). But on the other hand, when I'm told to expect the car to be done on a certain date, I'm expecting it to be done on that date, and Pam & I start making our plans around being available when it is delivered. (He actually picked it up, and will be delivering it back to me).
I don't know if you know Bill Philips (Rumbles) from the Factory Five forum. He built a really nice 33 Hot Rod a couple years back. Bill is in the process of building an SLC from Race Car Replicas, and had his car in Tony's shop before mine was brought in. (It was sort of odd that these two cars were in the same interior shop, and then went straight to the same paint shop...) Anyway, his car had been there for 2 or 3 weeks before mine, and yet from all appearances, mine was started first. That actually made me a little uncomfortable, seeing that Bill and I are friends. But then again I don't make the work schedule there, so it was never in my control. Maybe it was a case that his car was having total body and paint done, and mine was only having spot work done. I do know that Bill has been up there every other day, sanding out the body and helping to prep it. (He's always been very "hands-on", and I can't say that I blame him.)
I haven't really felt as though I'm getting the run-around, as much as just being 2nd or 3rd in line. In all honesty, he did tell me that these companies were his main source of work, and that he couldn't afford to interrupt that flow. They use him because he can turn cars around fairly quickly for them. (If you've never heard of them before, you should check them out. RK Motors of Charlotte. RK, is Ron Kaufman, global investment company as well as part owner of Michael Waltrip Racing (NASCAR). They sell very high end classics, muscle, and collector cars internationally.)
Yes, he is blending the paint, and then re-clearing. He quoted me a price to correct the flaws in the body and repaint the whole car. It was less than 1/2 of what I was charged for body and paint originally. But I didn't want to go that route since I only went in to have some scratches fixed. However, when I saw that wing, and the roof of the car under the "sun" lights, I couldn't leave them the way they were. I got angry at the fact that I had to re-do work that I had already paid quite a lot to have done. Then I told him to go ahead and correct it.
All in all, I think Tony's doing a really good job getting everything as it should have been originally, and at a fair price for the level of quality. My greatest concern is around the blended areas. Pearl paint is not easy to blend in the best of circumstances. But the proof will be in the clarity and shine of the paint. I've seen his work, and what I saw was really nice.
My only frustration comes from being told to expect the car back on a certain date and then find out on that date that it isn't near ready. In the meantime, my drop-dead date has just been blown through.
Am I happy about it? No, not so much. But I found out that when I get pissed and then go off on people, (especially before they finish work that I'm paying for), that I get bent over the table and end up doing the work again; as I am doing right now. Finding that wood screws were used by a company that I paid more than $40,000.00 to (and that attempted to charge me $60,000.00 for body paint and wiring), told me all that I needed to know in regard to how much trust I should extend. So I've had to learn to try and keep everything in check until delivery and then go from there. That may be the wrong approach; and it certainly goes against my better judgement, but again... What do you do?
Pam said something that got my attention yesterday... She said "You know, if you handled yourself as a consultant, the way that some of these car people run their businesses, you wouldn't be in business very long. But it seems that Honesty and Integrity as well as the generic rules of business don't seem to apply to them."
I told her that on the surface, she's absolutely correct. But in the world of car repair, they seem to have their own rules that people have no choice but to deal with. And in their eyes that see nothing wrong with how they treat their "customers". Where they are concerned, the only thing that you can hope, is that you get the result and the quality of work that you expect and that you've paid for.
So far, that has happened with only three people (companies) in my build experience: Shane Vacek, Lou Smith, and Steve Kurzman.
- Shane has ALWAYS been extremely professional and has always gone the extra mile for me, even though I'm just buying parts from him.
- Lou Smith got my suspension dialed in very quickly, and dead on as far as the possible numbers that we were trying to achieve. He'll definitely be doing the work when I switch the upper control arms.
- Steve Kurzman: The work that Steve did with my interior was nothing short of phenomenal in my oppinion. He far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Steve to anyone. Period.
Otherwise I've been treated like the proverbial mushroom, regardless of the amount of money spent.
Making this trip to Huntington Beach has really been very important to me. It has been one of my "GTM - bucket list items" since I started the project. I've been looking forward to having finished my car to be best of my ability, and taking part in THE show that Factory Five considers one of their most special. I figured that of all the shows that I could take my car to, this would be one of the coolest and most gratifying. And that after a 5+ year build, we'd splurge and go all out... But this is what has happened to me every time I've put a deadline on this build. I haven't been able to depend on too many other's schedules to match mine in a way that allows me to plan. Even 6 months out...
If the car is not finished, (and I don't really see how it can be now), we'll probably not go out for the HB show, and turn my focus towards being at the Open House in June. Maybe. We'll see.
Sorry for the Rant. I'm just sort of bummed out.
One of the things that I have to keep reminding myself, is that even though this as been a long term project, it is still my first project. And as such, I am still making contacts and learning who to use, in the Charlotte area and elsewhere, and who not to. I have a strong feeling that when I build the next car, things will go a little differently.
I am also really considering writing a book about this experience... as personal therapy as well as a heads-up sort of read for people who might be thinking of taking on a project like this. I feel that I may be able to add to what has already been written by many others. If it helps a few people that would be cool.

Hi Ron,
I had a scratch that was put on the nose by a flat bed operator that brought it home from the suspension shop, who denied any knowledge of how it could have happened. Tony is working it.
There were also some scrapes that happened from a guy (Corty Stone, a factory five Mk-III owner) that I sent it to, in order to correct the wiring mess that I had paid for once before. (Same guy that left it sitting outside in the rain). Funny thing is that after I paid for that work to be done the second time, it was still a mess. Those were light scrapes in the clear coat that will be buffed out in the final cut & polish.
In all reality, I probably should have just had him do the whole car. But I just couldn't wrap my head around having to pay to do the whole thing over again. I'll let him fix the scratches, blend the paint, and re-clear it, and see where we are at that point.
Thanks,
Mike

I hope the lack of being included in the "honest people" category is a slip in memory? I think we have worked together on a couple of issues on your GTM and I hope you have the opinion that I conducted myself courteously and professionally. If you feel I didn't, that's fine too, post it up.

LOL... I'm sorry Mike.. You're right. You have been a huge help to me as well. In many different areas, but especially in trying to get this cooling system sorted out. I've certainly recommended you to anyone who were need of GTM relevant advice as well as parts to solve known issues with the car. Your "What you need" list of parts, truly are What we need!
Sorry for the omission Buddy!
I should probably also note that Ted Harrison (Quick Racing Products), and Russ Thompson (under body skid kit) are also excellent vendors to the people on the two Factory Five forums. Both have been a huge assets to me, without question.
I'm sure that there may be others out there that I am probably leaving out. My short term memory isn't what it once was...

Mike,
I sure sympathize with you on the issues. It's the main reason I quit racing years ago. People never did what they were paid for re engine building etc. No integrity as you say. Just take your $$ and tell tales.
Please, please, please do HB. Your car is the main reason I'm making the trip over from South. AZ. But I'll understand.

I hope I'm on the short list too...:) Looks like the hatch is going ok. I kept it as low of a profile as I could in the front where it meets the roof. Is it lining up easily? I'm assuming there were no clearance problems with anything underneath? Let me know, the feedback is greatly appreciated. Looking forward to the finished pics. It will really suck if you don't make it to HB, but if the car is finished properly it'll be worth it.

Mike,
Just got to read your post... Man that wasnt a rant... Its everything I expect from you. Measured, insightful and truthful. If you dont make it, I can see that and totally understand how that goes. I have no idea why the cobra has taken me as long as it has so totally get how things stretch out. IMHO, I honestly agree about ranting to the business ... as it doesnt get much done(despite the anger in my post... Im just pissed about how you are being treated, you dont deserve it.) However, I do think there are ways you can move things along being a bit more strategic. We can chat on the phone if you like. :)
You're car is the epitome of the FFR story and then some. To tackle a GTM as your first build and first major car project approaches the insane... and I mean it in the most positive way. You execution and outcome thus far is nothing short of outstanding. The car is just an amazing piece and I truly mean that and speaks volumes of you and your supportive wife Pam.
We should talk sometime soon to catch up.

Oh not to pile on... but come on Mike I sold you a few parts, at least ad me to the list of good guys ;) I now know you didnt use them, but... hahaha... Really really I kid... :D
I think your idea of just working towards your goal of finishing the car as it comes is a good one. It really helps to keep it more fun and less of a chore.

Man I hope you get to HB or all my strategy is out the window. I knew I couldn't beat you in quality so my plan was to keep up you with quantity by bringing two GTMs. :-)
All kidding aside I really look forward to meeting you in person. Seeing your car in person would be icing on the cake.

Steve, I'm really looking forward to meeting you soon as well. I thought we had it done this time.
But, I'm afraid it will have to happen a little later. Huntington Beach just isn't possible now.
It's now official. I guess I need to call and cancel my Hotel reservation.
I stopped by the shop expecting to at least see that the car had been sprayed. But it hasn't.
I guess now I have a couple of car shows to focus on and look forward to for the year. Pam and I are going to try to be at the Factory Five open house, and then we'll see what the rest of the year brings.

The hatch has been sanded glass smooth. The section that joins the custom insert that Jason made transitions perfectly to the original hatch. The upper section of this hatch comes to the height of the body surface. So now it lines up with the body as it should. The polycarbonate window fits perfectly.

The slots for the wing stands have been cut in to leave a consistent gap around the brackets and room to open and close the hatch. As well, the edges on the upper sides of the hatch have been contoured a little to line up with the body much better.

Looks nice doesn't it?
By the way, for all you Good Guys fans, the car in the Background is the "Boss Snake" that was built by RPM-Hot Rods. This was the Good Guys giveaway car a couple of years back. The new owner wants it painted. So here it is...

The splitter and rockers still need to be removed and sprayed with clear and polished out...

Ron,
Nothing would make me happier than to be able to help Dave finish up, if for no other reason than to return the favor, and hang out with my friend. But the plan was initiated on getting the car out there for Huntington Beach, and have that be the milestone marker for the completion of my build. The expense of doing so was going to be hefty, but justifiable "in my mind".
I still plan to take the car to the west coast, and make a run down the PCH. And I truly hope to be able to meet up with all the people that I've "met" online along the course of this build. It will just happen later, and after it's finished, and the dust settles a little. Maybe then, if (when) I get a rock chip or two, it won't aggravate me as much...
Above all else, I want to be able to shake the hands of those who have helped me so much, as well as put faces to the names.
