holy cow you're cruisin! so excited!!!

what color did you end up going with?

Making some progress! I wimped out on Ruby Red and black...just not my style. I have a spray out I get to look at next week when I pick up my car. Looking Sterling gray, Black racing stripe and race red pin stripe. I was looking for a color in between silver and magnetic gray, think sterling gray metallic is going to work.

Fitment is done, I got the thumbs up from Ken and good news is everything fit including my air cleaner! Picking up car next week so I can get started on interior. After seeing the naked chassis for so long it is kind of cool seeing it with the body on. Next mount will be the final with some color on it!

Merry Christmas to everyone! Hope you enjoy some time with family and friends.

Picked up my car from Ken, now I need to start working on interior...

I also got a spray out from Ken. I have my colors picked out and ready to go!:D he said I should have a painted body in about 6 weeks so the build continues to progress along.

One thing I enjoy about building this car is being locked in my shop, the world is peaceful and Zeppelin playing always sounds good. What a crazy day in our country today, my prayers go out to everyone... hope we can get through this madness.

Anyway, back to the build after the holiday and some needed time spent with my family. Nice to get some build time carved in and I made some progress... finished installing all my LED interior lights, got my horn installed, cool mat is completely done. I also got my new clutch MC installed, what a huge difference! It actually feels like a normal clutch now. I also ripped around the neighborhood today to test out the new clutch MC for a go-kart run... she is running awesome, temps are right around 185 - everything moving in the right direction. Also hoping to get my leather center console and Vintage gauge bezel back from my upholstery guy sometime soon.

Here are my LED lights, I ended up picking up some China specials from Amazon. They seem to be about the right amount of light output and are also weather proof (IP66). I installed 8 of them throughout the car. Two under dash, two in the cubby compartment and four in the trunk. They turn on with the headlight switch courtesy lighting.

Here is a link to the LED lights for anyone interested:

My carpet is on order should be here soon. I am now ready for the install and hoping to do this next week. Per recommendation of Mr. Kleiner I painted all the seams to match the carpet. Thanks to the recommendation from GoDadGo I ordered some 20 oz Bassboat carpeting in a midnight star gray color so I used a can of dupli color to match it up for the seams.

For anyone using Cool it thermo mat, it took me 6 rolls to do the entire car including back side of the firewall.

Here is the link to the carpet. It is a nice 20oz cut, a little heavier duty than the FFR supplied carpet. Also comes with a 3 year warranty and UV protectant on it. Figured it has to be pretty tough stuff to withstand a fishing boat.

Thanks Mark, things are moving along... the build has really been a great experience.

yea, not sure if I will ever use the LED lights but I figured better to have them than not. Plus I can already hear my wife saying I wish we had some lights in the rear cubby to find things :D

Hope all is well with you!

LED's and carpet both bookmarked ... thanks, Travis.

Ditto on your thoughts on the shop. Everything retreats into the background when I step into the garage and turn on the lights. I actually like the separate garage and the short walk through the snow, knowing the heat's always at 60F ...

Congrats on the progress, things are looking really good.

Cheers, -- John

I was able to make some really good progress on my interior over the past few days. I finished carpet, center console, set seat belts in place, wired my hazards, heated seats, 12 volt charging accessory, and a few other little items. I still have a few trim pieces to install but overall most everything is finished up.

I ordered a 15 ft x 6ft wide carpet roll and was able to do the entire car. However, it was down to the last foot. I would recommend at least 18 feet, if you want some wiggle room for mistakes. The 20 oz bassboat carpeting feels really nice, time will tell how it wears but overall I am pleased with it.

Here was my arsenal for the carpet install. The trauma shears worked very good for cutting the carpet and putty knife was really nice to help bring all the seams together. I also used two cans of 3M super 77 for both trunk and cockpit.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140666&d=1610505144

The hardest and first piece I installed would really be easy with two people. I was running solo so I came up with this idea. After cutting it down to my liking I set it with clamps. Then I flipped it over on the blue moving blanket sprayed everything and flipped it down and it was just about perfectly aligned. Then i pulled the upper layer away and coated inside with Super 77. It ended up working out really well. This was the hardest piece to install.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140665&d=1610505132

A shot of the cockpit with the 20oz Midnight star carpet installed. I will be adding trim pieces along lower door area once the car is back from paint.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140670&d=1610505867

And then things started to come together. I installed my center console, vintage toggle bezel, Cobra floor mats and steering wheel emblem. I also picked up a Michael Everson leather shift boot which goes over the FFR rubber boot. I rolled the dice a little on going with this Midnight Star gray carpet but overall I really like the look of it and the contrast it adds with the black leather. True test will be when the car has some color on it.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140657&d=1610504989

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140658&d=1610505015

Here is my Vintage toggle bezel I fabbed up and had covered in leather. It also houses the heated seat toggle switches along with a Ron Francis MS1 battery disconnect. The only two active switches on the vintage toggles are for the footbox fans and hazard switch. The hazard switch was replaced with DP switch for hazard wiring.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140662&d=1610505067

This is my 12 volt USB/cig charger, up above is the Breeze storage cubby. I bypassed a heater but with the 12 volt accessory I can plug in an electric blanket to keep my wife nice and warm.

For seat belts I went with these 5 point STV cam lock style. So far I REALLY like them they seem to be very well made and the 2" shoulder straps are very comfortable which expand to 3" on the chest and lap area. The lower harness coming from under the seat is a 2". They are also very easy to put on and take off with the cam lock system.

Also picked up these Cobra floor mats

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140661&d=1610505053

Driver and passenger foot boxes. I had a goof in the passenger box... if you look hard enough you will see it but I figured nobody would ever look under there anyway.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140672&d=1610507397
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140671&d=1610507379

And my trunk, nothing exciting going on here... still need to trim out the top section of the drop box

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=140664&d=1610505104

Next task is mounting the roll bars, bolting in seat belts, and checking wiring for headlights, tail light, brakes, etc...

One of my punch list items before the body goes back on was to test all the light functions. Headlights, running, brake, hazards, turn signals, hi/low beams, etc. I was pleasantly surprised that everything is working in the RF harness and I actually wired everything correctly. The IDIDIT and Russ Thompson turn signal combo is working great, very glad I ended up going with this setup. I am also up to 20 miles on my go-kart now all seems good and I think my brake bias is also now adjusted properly.

One other item I also adjusted was the brake sensor attached to the brake pedal to turn on the brake lights. It was quite delayed which for safety reasons needed to be adjusted, now I have it set to come on as soon you touch the brake pedal.

My light test, some simple wire nuts to make sure all was good.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141142&d=1611291222

For the rear lights I wired in the LED converter which seems to be working good.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141854&d=1612232233

I also installed my breeze lower radiator hose mount. This is a nice piece and works well with the cool pipes.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141144&d=1611291262

I was also able to finish off my trunk and trim the drop box with some 1/2" aluminum angle. Officially done with the trunk now.

As many others have done I wanted to install a Metco driveline safety hoop. Hope I never actually have to use this but will be some nice insurance if the driveline ever broke. There is not much metal around the drive shaft.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141179&d=1611379027

I also wanted to have some type of drip shield under the clutch MC to avoid fluid ever dripping on the fuse panel. I needed it to be compact and still allow the windshield to be installed. I came up with this from some scrap aluminum I had left over and think it will serve the purpose. It is a super basic design but should help catch some leaks, anything forward of this should miss the fuse panel.

One other item I changed out was my header bolts. I went to these Vibe-lock, they have a very nice locking system on them. Much easier to do this now then after the body is put on the car.

I also decided to go with the 520 Speed works bolt less roll bar kit to avoid the dreaded Frankenstein bolt. The kit went together relatively easy other than having to grind down the spreaders for each bracket.

https://520speedworks.com/shop/ols/products/bolt-less-roll-bar-kit-15-inch

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141172&d=1611378832

You need to torque the bolt to 35 ft lbs, I tried using a strap wrench and could not get it tighter than 20 ft lbs. I ended up using this method, wrapped gorilla tape around the end a couple times with a terry cloth in the vice and it held. Did not do any damage to the chrome.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141174&d=1611378847

This is what you end up with, it threads right together and no Frankenstein bolt. Very clean look.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141173&d=1611378840

Here is a nice install video 520 Speed works put together, covers the entire install.

The 520 speed works kit is a pretty slick design. Greg the owner said it will hold to 20k ft lbs of force, probably not as strong as a bolt but would hold if you went over. I am just glad I do not have to try and drill a hole into that chrome in that area, I think it would be very easy to chip and do some damage.

I had someone ask me about my cup holders and if they were going to clear the top of the TKO trans. I ended up going with the deeper style cup holder that will actually hold a large beverage. I mean who does not want to Super size there drink! and ya gotta go with a Venti coffee  I was not a fan of the shallower "change holder" style, almost seems useless to me. I was able to fit my deeper style cup holders in with the addition of a rubber o-ring that sits on top of the center console to elevate the cup and not touch the TKO transmission. It lifts it approx 1/8"-3/16", pretty unnoticeable when in the car. I also use them on the underside to hold the cup holder down.

This is what I came up with and here is the link to the o-rings I ordered.

I was also able to get my roll bars bolted in. I burned through a 5/16" Cobalt bit to drill all six holes. After drilling these holes I am REALLY glad I did not have to drill the upper frankenstein bolt. The chrome does chip every time you drill a hole, even with a small 1/8" pilot hole. I also used a little cutting oil to aid in the drilling process.

Mounted roll bars with the 520 speed works boltless kit installed

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=141443&d=1611634604

One other item I decided to try was some chrome seam tape to hide the seam in the upper bar. I think it worked well and can easily be removed and applied again.

When I drilled the trunk holes I had a large chip happen. I was not really too concerned about it because it is in the trunk, but I found some liquid chrome that did a great job of hiding the chip. This stuff can be used to touch up any chip in chrome on the car or your roll bar. Simple to use and easy to apply.

With all the rain happening not much to do other than work on the Cobra. I wanted to get my spinners on the wheels, I picked up some Spinner Eaze and Silicon O rings to help with the install. I also did some more "pre" wiring while the body is off. I ran my all my wires for the reverse light, third brake light and front aux/fog light. Much easier doing this now then after the body is on.

Torqued all lug nuts to specs and installed spinners I did phone a friend (Vspeeds, BB767) to confirm I was installing them the correct direction. Thanks Eddie and Brian for the help!:D I have them on hand tight right now did not want to go crazy tight with them. Also did not use the set screw not 100% sure about using it. Fman. I've read not to use the set screws and, as a result, I have never used them. I just tighten by hand and give them a light whack with a rubber mallet. After a few drives, tap them again with the mallet. If any move, whack them a little more. Not scientific, but seems to work and you will shortly get a feel for how much you need to keep them tight. They should tighten opposite the direction of rotation of the car moving forward. If I remember correctly, tighten in the direction of the rear of the car.

The O-rings make the assembly process much easier. I used anti-seize ln the threads of mine. However, I will be switching to the Spinner Eaze next time I have to take my wheels off.

Terry, thanks for the clarification on the set screw.

Here is the way I have them mounted, basically forward to take off, towards rear of the car to tighten. Hopefully this is correct:D I will give them a light tap and call it good. I have loosened them once just to make sure they release and they broke away pretty easily. I just used a small spread of the spinner eaze on the threads, directions say it does not take much. Stuff is kind of goopy and messy.

Hi Todd, I picked up these lights. I will mount one right under the bottom center of the car. These are not DOT approved but I read a post where someone used them in CA and passed light inspection. Not sure if I will keep them after inspection is done.

It helps to understand why the spinners are reverse threaded on the right side of the car. The spinning motion of the wheels will tend to tighten the left side as they turn forward, but on the right side it would tend to loosen them because the forward motion acts in the same direct as loosening a right hand thread, thus a left hand thread is used. My first car was British and had wire wheels with knock off hubs and my dad was certain that I would loose a wheel at some point, so he hammered this point home.

As far as treatment of the spinners go, I use the o-ring, the set screw, no lube and a dead blow hammer to tighten. I figure as long as the threads are kept clean of corrosion they will do fine. The set screw has not done any real damage to the threads and in 3500 miles I’ve never had a spinner come lose or refuse to come off when I needed it too.

BTW, those door panels are one of the best purchases I made, very handy!

Totally makes sense, although it is a little confusing when you first get everything set up. Good to know about the set screw, I might use that and just snug it up.

I am still really impressed with Cobra Herb and how good of a job he did on the panels. And I can see that pouch is going to come in handy for small items. I feel like I have some basic necessity items covered with this car, I can hold a Venti Coffee in my cup holder, turn on heated seats and storage pockets in my door panels :D Life is good!

Okay, fine, adding that to the build plan. Good thing this is a hobby and not a project with a budget ...

As soon as you press the order button for a FFR Cobra the word budget is never thought about or discussed again! just remember you cant take it with you....:D

I figured it was a good idea to have some type of extinguisher in this car, with my profession I have seen plenty of cars catch on fire and burn to the ground. At very least better to have a fighting chance of extinguishing a small fire. Hopefully I never have to use it.

I chose to go with this 1lb H3R with a Goldfire quick release bracket, it has a cool looking billet PULL lever on top and seems to be well made. With the breeze cubby storage it was a tight squeeze but I think it will work. The Pull lever does stick up about 1/2" into the storage area but I believe there is still plenty of room to get items in and out of the cubby hole. I also still have room under the extinguisher to access the charging ports.

I picked up the extinguisher from Summit
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/HTR-MX100B

Like many others I used some black suede dye to do the door straps, it comes with a nice applicator and only takes a couple coats. Definitely want to wear some gloves when applying this stuff, will stain anything it comes in contact with.

After go-karting a few times I have been struggling with the pedal box and having the brake and gas pedal interfering with each other when pressing on them. I have size 13 feet and this pedal box does not like big feet, so I ended up moving the brake and clutch pad out even further. I also adjusted the Russ Thomspon gas pedal. This setup seems to be working better, I will probably also buy some type of driving shoes to narrow up my feet as much as possible.

Thank you, just copying a lot of mods from yourself and other builders on this forum. It is kind of odd, I am reaching a point where my car is about at the point where I can't do much more on it until the body goes back on. Even after that milestone there are only a few small items left to take care of and I could be on the road!

I took my wife out for a go-kart run today, weather was beautiful here...64 and sunny. it was awesome to look over and see her in the passenger seat! she really enjoyed it...cant wait to take it out for a nice long drive someday:D

I am easily replaceable more concerned about the roadster ;)

I have noticed a lot of guys will also keep a 5lb extinguisher in the trunk. The 1lb extinguishers are good for a quick knockdown to prevent a larger fire. Hopefully nobody ever has to use one for there car, that would definitely be a bad day.

Here's one idea. I used some aluminum L-bracket material from HD or Ace, cut some ears on it and bent them to fit the frame on the outside of the footbox:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48933825417_1595ed2712.jpg

I cut a blank out of 0.090" aluminum plate:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48957573377_cfa596c99b.jpg

I spent some quality time with the drill and the countersink bit and ended up with this:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49009929881_2fdb47504d.jpg

A quick hit with a sanding block and some 320 grit gave it a nice consistent satin finish. It provides a good foot rest with my foot below the stomp switch for the hi-beams, and there's plenty of room to lift my foot up and hit the switch:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49009398318_e00e9cf76f.jpg

One more note: I decided after looking at the dead pedal in place for a bit that it looked wrong with the curvy shape on the right side. Great, its shaped to the foot but you don't need all that support on a dead pedal. I'd put it in my dune buggy if I ever wanted to own a dune buggy. Which I don't.

I trimmed it to a straight rectangle shape with just the two columns of lightening holes and it looks much better now. More functional and race ready. Still all the support for the foot right where you need it. I can pull measurements off and take a photo of the refined shape tonight if you like.

Cheers,

I was at the big orange today and found a 2" quick cap, if you are in go-kart this comes in real handy for a fuel cap. It is easy to remove/install and does a good job sealing off all the fumes. Prior, I was using some gorilla tape and every time I went to add some fuel it was a PIA.

I think at HD they are $3 you can also find one on Amazon

I had installed a manual gate for my fresh air system, after reaching down a few times to open and close the vent I decided to improve it by adding a cable push/pull system to open and close the vents. This is also much easier to do now than once the body goes on the car. I picked up two choke cables and a pack of cable stops.

Dorman choke cable:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CO95LE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Dorman cable stops:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000COCPZM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ended up using some 1" L alum channel I had in my garage to make the bracket to hold the pull lever. This cable system is really nice to open and close the gates and is much easier than reaching down with your hand and doing it on the gate. It was a cheap upgrade less than $20 all in.

Here is drivers side cable run, I wanted to keep it away from foot box pedals and throttle linkage. It runs on the outside of the fuse box. I had to flip the gate 180 degrees to allow the actual gate to slide upward to open. Pretty easy swap, couple new holes and had to add extra piece of carpet to patch up the small gap. I also trimmed some of the sheet metal on the vent to clear the back of the pedal box assembly. The cable is held in place with a cushion clamp that is bolted with a nylock nut to the footbox.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142379&d=1612923950

I mounted the pull knob on outside of the drivers lower cross member area. The passenger side is in the same place. This seems to be a good spot, even with knob pulled out 2.5" there is plenty of clearance to get in and out of the car.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142380&d=1612923961

Passenger side gate and pull knob, no modification was needed other than drilling a small hole in the actual gate. The cable runs along the top of the footbox and hooks around the back area to the gate. All of this is completed hidden and cant be seen when car is on the ground.

I really like the nostalgic look of the low back seats in a Cobra but one of the problems is you have no neck support if the unfortunate happened. I started to look on the forum and found a mod that I really wanted to add to my build. I wanted to add a headrest and found another builder (Skidd) used a wheel chair calf pad which turns out to be cheap and about perfect size. I then took the pad to my upholstery guy and had him cover them with the leather hyde I am using on the car. This was relatively a cheap mod, about $150 total with all materials including upholstery.

Here are the wheel chair calf pads I picked up:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0711YNQ7R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are the rollbar clamps I ended up using:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CHW9L86/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

After mounting the roll bar clamps I mounted the base plate for the head rest. I used stainless hardware for the install.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142807&d=1613531468

I cut a piece of 2" wide x 1/8" alum stock I had in my garage. It is a good thickness for this application, plenty strong. I ended up using 500 grit and wet sanded it down and followed it up with some Mothers metal polish. Once the brace was mounted I used the 4 bolts to affix the head rest to the base plate. I went with black bolts I picked up from Ace hardware.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142809&d=1613531514

This is the wheel chair calf pad covered in the leather hyde

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142808&d=1613531500

The roll bar clamps have nice thick rubber grommets to protect the chrome on the roll bar. They can easily be adjusted up and down on the roll bar. They are not fully tightened down in this pic, they will pull together even more at full clamp force.

A couple more "to-do" items on my pre-paint checklist before I rivet up the drivers side footbox. I decided to install a dead pedal from recommendations of many on the forum.

The dead pedal is from 1/8" alum stock I cut and bent myself. I made it 1 3/8" wide by 5 1/2" long, 2" wide seems to be more standard size. I wanted it a little more narrow to free up some more space in the pedal box and not have my foot interfering with it when using the clutch pedal. I added a piece of grip tape on it, seems to be a good fit for my foot.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142947&d=1613706935

I mounted it a little forward in front of the clutch pedal, this seems to be a personal preference item. Some go behind it, I liked how I can roll my foot off it onto the clutch and never have my foot behind the clutch pedal.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142948&d=1613706947

I used 4 rivnuts to hold the pedal that make it removable just incase I ever want to take it out.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142949&d=1613706961

I also found this heel pad for the Cobra mats on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08FRCCQVB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They seem to be about the perfect size and affix with six screws that go into the underside of the pad.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=142950&d=1613706980

Also put one on the passenger side.

I was not a fan of the Celsius display, felt like I was doing math conversions in my head every time I looked at the gauge...and I am not good at math! It is a $14 charge plus shipping and about a two week turn around time to have the gauge converted over.

I decided to install a remote brake bias adjuster on my build, I am not sure how much I will actually use it but definitely will be a "nice to have" item. I do not think my brakes are adjusted 100% properly right now, so I am planning on fine tuning as I begin to drive the car. I ended up going with the Wilwood brake adjuster knob and Tilton 90 degree 3/8-24 adaptor. If you choose to do this the only modification is the Wilwood inner cable is too large and will not fit into the Tilton adaptor without enlarging the hole. Not really a big deal but I am sure the Tilton bias adjuster would fit without modification.

I tried initally to install without the 90 degree adaptor and it was not going to work. There is just not enough room on either end of the bias adjuster, for a clean install you definitely need the over priced Tilton fitting and they are definitely proud of that little sucker! :D

I mounted the knob on the right side under the dash, I chose this spot because it is easily accessible when driving, cant really be seen when car is on the ground and does not interfere with driving or getting in and out the car. It seems to be turning easy with no binding and a smooth operation. I did have to move my inertia switch over to make it fit (just realized I have to put a rivet in that hole)

There have been a few people that have had issues with the Mustang rear brake calipers not disengaging when the e-brake is released. I figured I would add the "spring brake" modification to avoid this happening. A shout out to Alexmak (aka fastest quarantine builder on the east coast) for giving me the links to pick up the necessary springs. Thanks again Alex!:D

Ken is mounting the hood and did all the fitment prior to paint so I assume it will have latches...Ken does amazing work, hard to believe that started as a red gel coat body!

Thank you... it turned out like I was hoping. Ken really does great work, feel super fortunate to have him so close to where I live. I definitley did not come up with this color scheme myself, feel free to use it or modify the recipe. It is actually from a Backdraft Cobra. I contacted Backdraft and they were super cool and gave me all the color codes.

For anyone interested here are the OEM paint codes.

Todd, always here to help people spend more $$$ ;)

I did run the fans with the gates closed and it seemed to not be a problem, motors did not change RPM's or sound overloaded... definitely would not recommend doing it long term. I don't think the gates seal up 100% and a minute amount of forced fan air will get through when they are closed. I kept it really simple, one toggle switch for both fans. It is really easy to tell if the gate is open and closed with the cable length. You definitely could add some type of safety switch but I don't know if it would be worth the effort. I think having two toggle switches would be an upgrade to control each fan separately with two different switches.

Nigel Allen
03-10-2021, 09:22 PM
Fact: with the gate/s closed the fan will not be moving any air, the load on the motor will be reduced and the motor will draw less current. Technically the motor could eventually overheat if it is relying on airflow over it's body to keep cool, but is unlikely as the motors are small, low current and it can still radiate heat into the surrounding air.

Cheers,

Nigel

Once again huge thank you!!! I installed the Biase

I tried initally to install without the 90 degree adaptor and it was not going to work. There is just not enough room on either end of the bias adjuster, for a clean install you definitely need the over priced Tilton fitting and they are definitely proud of that little sucker! :D

Tilton 90 degree adaptor: (3/8-24)
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/til-72-560

I mounted the knob on the right side under the dash, I chose this spot because it is easily accessible when driving, cant really be seen when car is on the ground and does not interfere with driving or getting in and out the car. It seems to be turning easy with no binding and a smooth operation. I did have to move my inertia switch over to make it fit (just realized I have to put a rivet in that hole)

A shot of the Tilton 90 degree adaptor with the cable mounted

One other item I ended up changing on my build is my Gas 'n pipes. I sold my standard Gas 'n pipes and went with the Gas 'n "Touring pipe". After go-karting around a bit I realized the standard pipes were a little louder than I wanted. I guess I am officially getting old  Fun for the first five minutes but not something I wanted to deal with long term. I also wanted my wife to enjoy driving around in this car. After bolting on the touring pipe I think I have found the sweet spot for me. Still has a nice tone with the 427 but not "in your face" loud and ear piercing or requiring ear plugs when driving around. There is still plenty of pushrod V8 muscle when you get on it.

The touring pipes are about 10 decibels quieter than standard.

Here is a nice video explaining and hearing the difference between the Standard and Touring pipe.

I am starting to work on post paint items that need to be finished up so #9818 can get on the road! Made some pretty good progress over the last couple days. Got my exhaust mounted, adjusted and hangers installed, Lemans cap & fuel filler, headlights, running lights.

Wanted to post about headlight install, the FFR manual IMO was not too good about how to actually install the headlights.

Headlight bucket with 3 prong connector and 4 screws mounted to body. Also note the two adjustment screws. I also had to enlarge the hole in headlight bucket to fit the grommet.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144752&d=1616213195

Headlight bezel, it uses 3 gold small screws. The tabs align with the headlight and lock it in with the screw. I read up on these tabs breaking or being very flimsy but so far they seem to be holding fine, I guess time will tell once the car is on the road.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144753&d=1616213209
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144754&d=1616213224

Note the lower golden colored tab, that actually helps lock in the headlight ring. It is important to have it orientated in correct position. Another tip if your headlight ring is loose you can bend out that tab a little help snug it up.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144755&d=1616213237

Lucas PL700 Tri-bar lights installed, I really like the vintage look of them and they fit perfectly into the FFR headlight bezel.

Picked them up of Amazon from this vendor.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LFP2O0C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144756&d=1616213264

Also was able to get my oil pan swapped out for a Champ 351-RR 7" deep rear sump. My previous Canton 8" was hanging 3/4" down below the frame, learn from my mishap... go with a 7" deep pan and never look back. The Champ sits up inside the frame rails now.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144751&d=1616213183

Exhaust hangers installed, I painted them satin black. One item I did change up was rather than drill through the backside of the frame into the footbox area I tapped the two holes. This seems to be working better for me, no bolt protruding into the footbox. I used blue loctite on the two bolts holding the hanger and will keep an eye on them once I start driving.

Was also able to get my Lemans cap installed and fuel filler connected up. I chose to run 10-24 hex bolts rather than screws into fiberglass. I just felt like this looked better and was a more secure way of mounting the Lemans cap.

Note: My hole for my Lemans cap was about 1/4" too small, make sure check this on your body. Much easier to enlarge hole in gel coat rather than after paint.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=144748&d=1616213126

I cut the rubber hose down to 4 1/2" which seemed to be about the right length, yet another trip to Ace Hardware (must be on at least 45 visits there since I started building this car) to pick up 10-24 bolts, washers and nylock nuts for the underside.

I was able to get my front end finished up, over riders, headlights, running lights, Michael Everson radiator panel, breeze vent screens, cobra emblem. I had the ME radiator panel powder coated satin black. I still have a couple fog lights to install but I won't tackle that until later on down the road.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145002&d=1616467802

Also finished up running my license plate light and tail lights. I ended up using a 1/2" hole in trunk and rear lower deck to run the wire. I found a long zip tie which worked really well to fish the wire through the trunk lid.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145006&d=1616467857

Finished wire run and zip tied up to the hinge.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145005&d=1616467849

I was also able to get my side vents mounted with the 427 badge. I used double sided gorilla tape on both the badge and side vents. Side vents are a combo gorilla tape/velcro, I wanted to make them removable if I ever needed to take them out. The side vents are painted BMW sterling gray, Ken Pike painted them with the car.

Splash guards are finished up...

In the rear fender area I added one extra piece in-between the cockpit and front section of the rear fender area. This area had a large gap and the door trim piece did not really cover it up much.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145074&d=1616562651

This is gap that was covered up, not sure if it was necessary but I had some extra bulb seal and figured I would put it to use.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145073&d=1616562641

The rear overriders were definitely more difficult than the front. I had to cut off the all thread (7/16-20) and chase out the holes in the overriders to fit onto the two threaded rods sticking out. Once I was able to thread the nuts on it went pretty smooth, but getting those nuts on was not super easy. This is after I cut to length and added some anti seize.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145071&d=1616562618

I used a pneumatic grinder to chase out the holes in the overriders. It smoked a drill bit quickly so I went to the carbide grinding bit and it did the job.

Outside of the car and engine compartment are finished up, I am working towards getting the cockpit ready to go. I had limited time today but was able to get a few items checked off my punch list.

I installed the Breeze upper radiator cowel cover kit, what a nice piece that comes finished in black powder coat. I was glad I did not have to remove the hood, the cowel went on easily with the hood mounted up. This piece serves two purposes, it cleans up and finishes off above the radiator and prevents hot air from recirculating from engine compartment back to the fan. As many have already mentioned everything from Mark Breeze has been awesome along with his customer service! I really like the "MADE IN THE USA" stickers on all his products:D

Progress continues on my final punch list...

I was able to get sun visors, wind wings and breeze side mirrors mounted up. Not really too difficult but I thought I would post up some pics to show how all the brackets are installed. The Breeze side mirrors are a nice addition to the setup. I did not want to mount my mirror on the body with the supplied FFR mirror that comes with the car.

A shout out and thank you to Tim Lee who brought his newly finished Mk4 out to my house yesterday, it was nice to see all the wind wings, mirrors and sun visors installed on a car which made my install much easier. His car turned out great, should have snapped a photo!

Wind wings are from **********, they have the COBRA logo on the outside which adds a nice custom look. The Breeze mirrors attach perfectly to them.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145396&d=1617122369

One thing to look out for is making sure the door clears with the wind wing folded down. I left about 1/4" clearance from
the door which seemed to be about the correct install location. Chances are you will never have it this low but always good to make sure there would never be a chance of catching it on the door.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145397&d=1617122377

Sun visors installed, I did add a lock washer in between the mount and windshield to reduce the number of threads going into the windshield. My painter told me not to have more than 2.5 threads past the mount going into the frame. Apparently you can crack the windshield if these screws go too far into the frame. I did not want to take any chances.

Hey thanks, I am getting close! still a few more small items to go.... The door panels are from Cobra Herb and yes they are good quality. Simple to install, they come with Velcro on them to affix to the door. I sent Herb pieces of the leather hyde from my build and he used that leather on the door panels to match my dash, center console, etc...

I was going to carpet it but after seeing it with the powder coating I am going to leave it be, I kind of like the industrial look plus it is very durable with the hammer tone finish/clear coat on it. I will be adding one more trim piece where the carpet meets the panel but won't do that for awhile.

Shower mat? Yup! These are a life saver once your car gets painted. They do not slide around and do a great job of protecting the paint from a dropped tool or screw. Highly recommend them and they are only $10/ea. Definitely slowing down my pace when working around the car with fresh paint. I picked up three of them and use them every time I am around the car.

I am about 99% done with this car and it is ready to hit the road. Will be about another 6 weeks before I get my registration finished. What a fun journey and although my wife will never be on this forum I really need to thank her for allowing me to tackle this project. Also a shout out to many people on this Forum for all the help which made this journey possible, THANK YOU!. I am looking forward to getting #9818 out on the road soon!

Today was a great day, I took out the car for its first "official" drive and everything for the most part went well. The only item I had a problem with was my attwood blower fan on drivers side did not work, passenger side was blowing but this should be an easy fix. Other than this it was a successful 30 mile drive. I have no plates on the car with a temp driving permit. I really don't know if the permit allows me to drive "anytime" or just to my DMV appointments for registration. I figured better to ask for forgiveness than permission :D The car performed great, temps were good and the PF4 EFI system is continuously learning, this was the first "real" drive I have ever taken the car on. Previously I had some short 4-5 mile go-kart runs. I am not going to go on the freeway until I have the car aligned, still playing with ride heights a little but I think I am close to a good height and will then take the car in for a professional alignment.

I did come close to burning my leg on my side pipe today so I figured I better install my drummer mike covers while I am ahead of the inevitable. They look nice and will definitely give a warning shot before you end up burning your leg.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145983&d=1617991991

I also found these caution hot exhaust air craft decals to help remind myself and passengers about the exhaust when they get out of the car.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145778&d=1617765549

Also got my wheel well liners installed, these are really nice and will help eliminate any starring in the paint from a rock hitting the underside of the fender. Some minor trimming in the front, the rears dropped right in.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145781&d=1617765575

I can't install any Xpel or 3M protective coatings on my paint for at least 90 days so I came up with a temporary rock guard to help reduce the chances of hitting my front back fender area. It is a simple set up but seemed to hold up fine today on my drive. I will take them off once I have some type of protective film on the car. They are velcro'd on and are easily removable. They dont protrude outward too much, tried to make them as less noticeable as possible and still providing some protection.

Are you doing install yourself or having a shop do it? Any other area of the car than rear fender area?

Having a shop do it. Bra, front of rear fenders, tops of doors where you would lay your arm. Maybe 6 to 8 inches up on the rear fender behind the rear wheels.

Thank you Chris, I have always been a neutral color guy but there are a lot of awesome color combos out there. Good news is you can't go wrong on any color scheme with a good painter.

The drive was probably one of the best feelings I have had in a long time. Knowing you built this machine cruising down the road with the sound of a healthy engine is about as good as it gets. I am really pleased with my engine thus far, I can mildly cruise it but when you want the power it is all there. So far the Pro Flo 4 EFI is doing good and it will keep learning/improving for the first 500 miles.

Getting some more miles on the car, had a great drive this evening in 85ish degree weather. Cant stop smiling while in this car it really is a fun machine to get behind the wheel with! Car is running good, temps are 185-190 all day and the PF4 EFI is performing well. Going to schedule my alignment for next week.

It got toasty in the cockpit, I am getting a lot of heat in-between the gap behind door and outside footbox area. Would be nice on a 50 degree day but not 85. If anyone else has a recommendation other than pool noodles or egg foam mattress please let me know! I am also quickly realizing why a lot of builders do not put heaters in these cars, there seems to be PLENTY of heat in the cockpit area. I am hoping blocking off that door gap area will help reduce some of the heat down.

Edit: Per my painter Ken Pike, told me to pick up some of this. Hoping to get this installed in next couple days.

My wife and I took a nice drive today around town, got a lot of thumbs up on the car and put a few smiles on some kids faces which was cool. I am up to 140 miles now and knock on wood & fingers crossed everything is running great. It was awesome to have my wife with me, definitely makes the build feel complete! She was the first "official" passenger I have taken out... She really enjoyed it and the Gas 'n touring pipes are spot on for us... we could have a conversation with each other while cruising in the car and no ear plugs required. About the only issue I have had thus far is I almost lost the passenger wind wing/mirror, top clip was off... luckily I caught it and just needed to be tightened down.

Recently, I was able to get my lower door trim pieces finished up, I found a company that sells 3/4" aluminum L corner moulding that is already powder coated and ready to go for a very reasonable price. Was considering taking the carpet off and binding the edges but this was much easier and gives a nice finished off look. I ended up applying them with double sided gorilla tape on the top channel only against the powder coat, that stuff is legit and is doing a great job of keeping it in place.

Surprisingly HD was the supplier, took about 5 days and they sent it directly to my house:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Alexandria-Moulding-3-4-in-x-3-4-in-x-96-in-Metal-Mira-Black-Outside-Corner-Moulding-AT008-AM096C01/205576693?cm_mmc=ecc-_-THD_ORDER_CONFIRMATION_BOSS_STH-_-V1_M1_CA-_-Product_URL&ecc_ord=WG28616488

I also installed my carpet mat clips, got this idea from Shark's build, I ended up going with 4 on each mat. Two on the upper section and two on the lower section, it definitely has taken care of the issue of the floor mats sliding around and binding up.

Most of the cars in the line up are from the "Built not bought" local Cobra club, some really nice folks that enjoy talking shop.

Up to 300 miles now, holding my breath and crossing my fingers but everything seems to be working. PF4 EFI continues to run better and better the more miles I put on the car... Chris,

I'm sure you will find some Cobra builders in your area. There is nothing better than hearing four cobras sitting at a signal light shaking the earth :D. Yes, I did end up cutting my sleeve on my UCA. With power steering I wanted to make sure I could have proper alignment done. I am not sure if this actually helped but I do know they were able to align the car properly.

Had a couple items I was able to get to today, installed my fog lights and wired them up to my AUX LIGHT on the vintage gauge bezel. I was also not thrilled with the Gas 'n exhaust hanger rubber grommet that came with my touring pipes. I ended up replacing the grommets with some heavier duty exhaust straps, much more stable and still allows the exhaust to flex a little to avoid cracking any welds.

The fog lights are similar to the Tangent but without the center grille, overall I am pleased with how they look and were not too difficult to install. Used some 1/4-20 stainless button head screws for the bottom with spacers to elevate the light into the correct position.

I picked up the lights off Ebay, part number UW3682:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=147301&d=1620096752

Todd, no night time shots yet, light output seems decent. Hopefully I will be able to test them out soon.

When I had my light and brake inspection done he did not even ask about a reverse light or wipers which I did not have. I think it is hit and miss depending on where you take your car for the inspection. The guy I went to is definitely where you want to go ;)

I have about 400 miles on the car now, fine tuning some items. One item I have been disappointed with is the fresh air vent system, basically it has been like adding a heater. It was blowing hot air in the cockpit when engine is at full temperature. The 3" tubing I used was RV sewage line with no insulation and I was a little concerned about what would happen if one ever came off the hose clamp and hit the exhaust, it would have been a mess and possibly caught fire. So I ended up finding some 3" insulated hose, flame proof and will do a much better job of not getting as hot. I also was not happy with how the front of the intake hose was looking on the front of the car under the mesh screen.

Here is the 3" hose I changed out, RV on left and new insulated hose on right, it is doing a much better job of cutting down on the heat sending cooler air to the footbox area. When I say cooler air it is by no means "cold" air, but it does supply some tolerable airflow on a warmer day which helps keep the boys cool.

Also helps capture some more cool air when car is driving and cleans up the lip on the 3" tubing.

That insulated hose is a good idea. I like the way mine work while moving and fan off, but at a light with the fan on it’s little improvement over no air at all. It’s surprising the air can heat up in that little time near the headers.

I am glad you responded was wondering what the "norm" was others were experiencing for a fresh air system. The insulated hose has helped but the air is still not what I was hoping for. There is just so much heat in that engine compartment the hose is actually hot to the touch. I did just order two front plastic scoops Toadster recommended, will have to see if these are going to help pull more cool air in. I almost feel like the section of hose in the engine compartment above the headers with the intense heat needs to be somehow more insulated or maybe double wrapped with the insulated hose?

Those brake duct adapters work well and the vent system is worth it while moving, but I’ve been thinking the same thing about insulating in the area of the headers. I guess the air movement through the engine bay at speed is why they work better moving rather than with the fan at a stop light. There is also the possibility of header wrap on the headers.

Edit: after researching this it looks like the wrap is questionable for long term use, but ceramic coating the headers looks pretty good at reducing engine bay heat.

I wanted to add one extra brake light on #9818 to possibly help avoid a rear end collision, I went with 8" plasma rod. They are used on Harley Davidson bikes often are very thin and throw a lot of light out and use literally no power. Ideally was looking to mount it between the drivers seat on the upper cockpit area. Unfortunately I could not find a way to mount the light without it taking away from the vintage look of the car. My second choice was going under the trunk in the center. Even though it is low to the ground having one extra brake light is better than two. It was easy to tie into the existing brake light setup and I am hopeful this extra brake light will add a little more defense against a rear end hit. The light is almost unnoticeable when it is not powered up, I was able to tuck it in tight under the body with a piece of .040 aluminum that is mounted to the plastic fuel tank cover.

Here is where I picked up the Plasma Rod: Custom Dynamics 8", they run about $79.

Up to 650 miles now on the Roadster, had my first moment of something is not right... was leaving a local car show that evening and realized my engine was not running right. Seemed like it was on 7 cylinders. I was able to limp 9818 home and discovered a couple things when I got home. I ran a diagnostic on the PF4 EFI and turns out my #6 injector was not working, turned out to be an easy fix because the connection had somehow popped off. Then looked down at spark plug boot #5 and discovered it had melted against the header shorting out. Must have somehow come off. I ended up replacing it with a 90 degree boot and now there is more clearance, has been good for last 100 miles. Basically I was running on 6 cylinders so happy I was able to make it home and avoid my first flat tow.

Other than this mishap knock on wood the car continues to run good, I did a 500 mile shake down, oil change and double checked all bolts and everything looked good from the underside on the lift. Every time I turn the key on to this car it puts a smile on my face, could not be more happy with engine choice to this point. I can drive it like a grandma or hit the insanity button. Elliott Franklin my engine builder really set the motor up perfect for what I was hoping for. I am starting to debunk the myth of a 427 with 500+ HP in these cars are not driveable, definitely not the experience I am having.

Hope everyone is out enjoying there roadsters

I think I might be heading down that road, for a winter project I might be pulling my headers and having them ceramic coated. Wish I would have thought of that when they were off the car during my build. If you are in build mode right now would highly recommend looking into sending your headers off to Jet Hot, they claim 50% reduction in heat which would be well worth it if that is truly the results.

Great video Todd, thanks for sharing... I might even do this next month. Once the summer heat hits the car will be sitting until fall weather kicks in... I just contacted them today looks like $363 for 21" or less header length, $400 for 21"-30" header length. This includes shipping back, probably will be $50-$60 to ship them out to there facility. They said 15 day turn around and lifetime guarantee.

One question maybe someone can answer is does all this heat get sent down to the side pipes, it has to go somewhere... that might not be a good thing having glowing side pipes.

JohnK
05-24-2021, 03:09 PM
Purely a guess on my part but I would imagine that the exhaust gas passing through the side pipes will be a bit hotter if some of that heat doesn't dissipate through the headers. However, I seriously doubt that the side pipes will get hot enough to glow. The other way to look at it is that the side pipes already get hot enough to burn someone with or without ceramic coating on the headers, so adding heat shields on the side pipes may not be a bad idea for safety.

The 4 into 4 headers I received from FFR were already ceramic coated. I was VERY surprised at how cool they run. I did go and get the side pipes and heat shields on the outside of the side exhaust ceramic coated by Jet Hot. They do great work and my stainless side exhaust was a bear to keep clean. Compound 303 is wonderful but I was cleaning them every couple of weeks.

I'm going to have to do some more research I had no plans to ceramic coat my gas n pipes, imo the cermic coat does not look even close to a polished pipe. Would like to find someone who has ceramic coated only the headers and not the side pipes. Heat has to go somewhere, not sure if sending 60% more heat towards the gas 'n pipes is ideal. Maybe this would not be the case but I am sure the side pipes would definitely be running hotter.

If I end up doing this want to make sure I do not create another issue.

True the ceramic is not as shiny as stainless but Jet Hot does have what they call Classic Polish that IMO looks really good. The great thing is it never discolors. Here are mine with classic polish on the pipes as well as the heat shields.

With warmer weather here footbox and cockpit heat becomes more of a topic and issue. When I first started driving I had a lot of heat in my footbox coming in through the gaps between the doors and body it felt like a heater blowing on me. I was able to stuff 2" foam in the gaps and have drastically reduced the heat down to a tolerable acceptable level which is great. However, I want to make it even better. So I started to brainstorm and thought how could I cut down engine compartment heat more to help with footbox and cockpit heat. Airflow is always a big help when reducing heat, so I ordered up a couple 4" bilge blowers and mounted them aiming directly at the side vents. They are 270 CFM per blower and only draw 6 amps each. I painted them black so they are not really noticeable and tucked in under the fender area. These are working very good, they blow a lot of hot air out of the engine compartment through the side vents and suck cooler air in under the car. I had an extra toggle switch on my vintage bezel so install was pretty easy. Another bonus was they are not that loud with the engine running you can barely hear them.

Picked them up on Amazon:

If you are considering adding the 4" bilge bowers for the engine compartment I gathered some data from a drive today. It was a beautiful day today for a drive in the Cobra, 75 and breezy.... 'bout perfect! A gift for June, hit 103 last week for a day or two... looks like it is heating up next week.

I gathered some data using my PF4 tablet. The PF4 air temp sensor is located inside the air filter.

Outside air temp 75 degrees

Driving (45 mph) air engine compartment temp read 104 degrees, 4" blowers had no affect on dropping engine air temp while car was moving at 45 mph.
Hottest idling engine compartment air temp read 151 with 189 degree engine temperature.
4" blowers dropped temp when idling from 151 to 136 in less than a minute.

4" blowers dropped engine compartment air temp 15 degrees at idle. I assume this would also be similar results in stop and go traffic.

I feel like 15 degrees is worth it for less than a $50 investment. This number could even be higher on a warmer day. I will try the same test on a warmer day and report back.

After 800 miles I have noticed my side pipes were starting to get a "yellowish" hue to them, started to look at some cleaning options to get them back to there bright stainless look. Edwardb recommended the Compound 302 which I am planning on ordering. In meantime I wanted to see if there was any other options with what I had in my shop to get them cleaned up. I came up with a 1-2 combo that worked well.

Side note: I took 9818 to a cruise night last week, interesting enough I was looking at my side pipes when I got home from the event and noticed both sides at the bend coming off the body had melted material on them.... looks like somebody melted there pants on them!!! Crazy, I hope they did not burn there leg... this was also not fun at all to take off, took some serious elbow grease and a razor blade. I might start putting out a couple small cones next to the pipes when a car show to help warn people.

I started with a couple coats of Bar Keepers Friend followed up with Mothers alum and mag polish. This took off the yellow hue and brought the pipes back to life. Not sure how long they will stay this way but for time being I am pleased with the results.

"In my neck of the woods we call those little awesome machines "Swamp coolers".

Awesome is right! I can't believe how well this cooler works, wish I had bought one years ago... I like how the newer swamp coolers don't seem to have that musty smell coming from them the air seems dry and clean. It will be put to good use this summer, already hit 110 here and looks like more 100+ is coming again next week.

Definitely can say I do not think driving this car will ever got old.... nothing but smiles per gallon

Very cool, Travis! Thanks for sharing your video. I had a lot of fun "riding along". (I've yet to ride in, sit in, or even see in-person a finished F5 Roadster, so really enjoyed seeing yours in action).

It looks like your roadster is tracking very well. I noticed it seemed like you barely touched the steering wheel along the straight stretches . Nice!

P.S. I think you shared some of your hot weather up here in PNW. We're shattering temp. records left and right, including all time highest ever recorded temperatures, consecutive days above 100, etc. Phew!

Hey thanks everyone, I am definitely a GOPRO novice and have some antiquated editing software I am using but good enough to make a short video. I got an older Hero 7 for fathers day so now I can tinker some more with some videos.

Chris, sorry to hear about the heat, ironically my wife's company is up in Redmond WA and she is there right now roasting. Looks like you have some cooling coming. I will be up there for the 4th of July next weekend so I am also hopeful it cools off! My alignment seems spot on and the car drives really well and tracks dead straight even under hard acceleration. I am glad I did the IRS, I think it is worth it. You should see where Brien lives up there (BB767), he recently moved from our area to WA, he took me for a ride in his 2017 build with a BP 427, I am sure he would give you a ride.

Nucjd19, you are going to really enjoy driving your Cobra and even better with your wife in it with you. We have had some awesome date nights in it already... After 900 miles now I finally just about got all of it with the pedal mashed, these cars are visceral and I realize I need to respect it. It is definitely fun to open her up every now and then on the straights! Our weather is pretty hot right now, we are 90-100+ every day so later evening drives or early morning is about all we can do right now. I am looking forward to some cooler fall weather coming down the road.

For anyone looking for a good GoPRO roll bar mount this one is a good price and super solid. Recommended by Mark, very happy with it.

Battling footbox heat has been my challenge over the hotter months driving the car. Finally I have reached a point where I feel like the footbox heat is tolerable and acceptable, still warm but not hot anymore. I added DEI Titanium wrap to my FFR stainless headers and fortunately was able to wrap them on the car which saved a lot of labor not having to remove the headers. I also added some HP 2000 degree Sticky Heat Shield on outside of the footbox on both driver and passenger sides. These two additions along with the 4" bilge blowers and 2" foam in the door jambs have definitely made a significant difference in engine compartment, footbox and cockpit temps.

If you have any interest in any of these products here are some links:

HP Sticky shield, this was enough to do both footbox areas:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hsp-180021

HP Sticky shield seam tape, you need one extra roll to fully cover up all seams:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/HSP-340110

DEI Titanium header wrap, this is plenty to do both sides with extra left over:

After 5 months, three backflips, two cartwheels, jumping through three hoops and killing the DMV with kindness I received my plates yesterday and 9818 is officially registered in the great state of Commifornia. I guess this would be the official graduation although my car has 1000 miles on it already but nice to have this out of the way. Not the most glamorous title as a 2020 special build vehicle but smog exempt with a valid registration. Almost seems odd seeing it with a real license plate, just glad to not have to visit the DMV anymore!;)

Have been meaning to get my trunk lid some type of support rod, while at a car show I noticed this was on Mark's car (aka DutchF5). So I ordered one up from ********** and surprisingly it arrived in three days! Looks like ********** is back up and running which is awesome because Taylor has some nice products. Install on the trunk rod was pretty straight forward once I had a few pictures of Marks install. I did add a support bar and backing plate to support the lower bracket on the fiberglass a little better. Probably not necessary but I figured it would not hurt adding it to the mix. It is nice to not have to use a piece of PCV pipe now to keep the trunk lid open ;)

Here is a link to ********** rod, $29.

Clutch stop, simple but functional. Also totally adjustable the rubber stopper can go completely flat against 1/8" alum reinforcement plate if needed (by removing the nut). Can also be adjusted outward approx 1-1/4"

Hi Travis. I warned you I'd have more questions. :p

Now that you've driven >1K miles how is this clutch pedal stop working for you? Does the forward wall of the FB flex when the pedal comes in contact? I'm at that point in my build and looking at options. Thanks in advance.

Chris please ask away... to answer to your question... when I originally came up with that idea I was using a larger bore MC with a longer stroke. Problem was I had very hard pedal pressure with that larger 1 1/8" MC. When I reduced it down in size to reduce pedal pressure I lost throw and needed more clutch engagement with the pedal and had to ditch that stop. I am not using the stop, clutch arm is just contacting the back of the footbox against the carpeting/coolmat. So far it has been fine not an issue at all. I keep an eye on it but I am not anticipating any problems. You could always add another small square piece of aluminum where the clutch is going to contact the footbox if you wanted some extra protection from pedal arm contacting it.

Hope this helps...

Ah. I remember your advice about the proper MC size (I ordered hydraulic clutch kit from Forte - the MC size matches what you said). My clutch pedal contacts the 3/4" tube, preventing the pedal from coming in full contact with the FB forward wall. It's only about 1/2" short of touching the wall. Maybe it's okay as is? If I install a stop, it will stop the clutch pedal travel just slightly more - perhaps 3/4" total instead of 1/2". Am I wasting my time installing some sore of pedal stop?

I do not think you are waisting your time but you really won't get a good feel for the entire throw until you have clutch/slave working together with transmission in the car. You can definitely adjust the clutch pedal forward and backwards to accommodate more or less throw. I would install the pedal stop and if needed it is easy to remove and block off the hole. Mine was right on the edge with the stop installed and I did not want to pull my clutch arm back any further. I might just re-install the round washer with a carriage/flat bolt head to give it some more backing, on my winter project list.

Kyle's passing was devastating to everyone, his wife stayed home with there kids and has no job. We are trying to do everything possible to help them out financially. I had no intentions of racing anyone out there, just learning how to drive my car and building up some confidence with it. Being by myself on the track was really what I was hoping for. I was definitely the slowest car on the track that day :D a great experience and highly recommend everyone doing it at least once.

I have had a few issues with my door latches so I thought it would be a good idea to add this to my build thread for future builders. The drivers side latch broke and would not open and I lost the stainless ball on latch arm on passenger side. It is never a good day when you loose one of your balls. FFR told me they have no latches available so I guess they also don't have any spare parts laying around. I ended up pulling both sides off and did the J. Kleiner mod on the center swivel and found a solution for the stainless ball.

Highly recommend if your building a car to do at least the J. Kleiner mod, you might get lucky and not loose one of your balls :-)

Here is the J. Kleiner mod you are basically adding a carriage/flat headed bolt in the center pivot mechanism to capture the arm on the pivot. It is a very good idea and thanks to Jeff for coming up with this solution because it works great and is an easy fix. What ends up eventually happening is the pressed on arm comes off the pivot point and your door will not open.

I had a couple flat head bolts laying around in my garage I used but you can you use any flat headed bolt of your choice. The bolt size is 5/16-8 about 1" long with a washer and nylock nut.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154482&d=1634181621
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154483&d=1634181621
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154484&d=1634181621

One thing I also had to do was grind an opening on my door to allow for bolt head. Without doing this you will have issues with the latch binding up. I used a pneumatic grinder on very low speed, it is easy to grind through the fiberglass. Just be aware of the backing plate no need to go through it.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154485&d=1634181621

For the stainless ball issue I found threaded stainless balls on McMaster Carr. I ordered (2) 3/4" stainless threaded balls part number 6954K12 with 10-24 threads. I picked up a couple 10-24 stainless bolts, washers and lock washers from Ace hardware.

Link to threaded balls:
https://www.mcmaster.com/stainless-steel-threaded-balls/

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154486&d=1634181621

Final ball latch mount, I also added some blue loctite to the threads. Nothing better than getting both of your balls back.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=154487&d=1634181644

This is what you end up with, I actually like the larger 3/4" ball better than the one that comes from FFR because it is easier to move the latch with your hand. You have a much better improved door latch now.

With daylight savings coming to end I have driven my car in the dark a couple times now and the 60w halogen bulbs did not produce much light. I also live in the country with no street lights along with deer and small animals all over the place at night. I found these LED headlight bulbs that were very easy to install inside the Lucas Tri-bar headlight. If you are looking to upgrade and you do not have a sealed beam headlight these are definitely worth the money. They are plug and play and only draw 26W and claim to be 300% brighter than halogen bulbs.

The Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California was high on my list, we decided to tow 9818 down to San Clemente where we have family to stay with. We took a couple days and ran up a section of the PCH from San Clemente to Huntington Beach and back down the I-5 through Oceanside and Torrey Pines. It was a great time, cant wait to come back and do it again. Weather turned out to be great, we did have some fog in the morning which lifted to sunny skies in the afternoon. We also hit Cars and Coffee Orange County Saturday morning which is always a treat, easily over 600 cars there with everything you can think of attending.
