I have to confess Don Ross, the fabricator, came up with the solution. Prior to the mods it took me literally an hour or more to remove or install the side panels. Don's solution is not that exotic. The parts consist of a mounting plate like 94715A250 at McMaster Carr with a bolt in Pin and set screws in the plate. I do not know if he got a complete set somewhere else. The pictures above have a punch he used to align the fabricated louverd panel foot sections to the existing holes I had in the car already. The end result is I can remove or replace a side panel in about 3 minutes. With the Louverd panels I hnow have three options on the car, louvered, standard, or open engine compartment. I made a litte video with better pictures of the pins and how they are mounted, plus a short session on mounting the side panel itself.

Been boring you guys for several years now. Just finally had an experience and an epiphany. Discovered my true feelings about these cars and recieved the ultimate compliment. Took my builder's 15 year old nephew for a ride. Tried to get him to drive it, he was too respectful and shy. So anyhow we went out and flogged it. Hint watch the changes on his face from start to finish. There is no trophy, magazine article, chick pick up line or anything else that compares to the rush I get seeing someone else capture my feelings. His father is the second passenger.

A few years ago when I had one of my cobras, I met a college kid at a gas station and he asked if he could go for a ride. He said he dreamed about cobras since he was little. I took him for a short wild ride including a high speed exit ramp. The smile was ear to ear, the fingerprints trying to hold on were everywhere, but the real proof was the small puddle in the passengers seat!

So 121 R&R has primered my side panels to protect the bare metal. We will do a major paint touchup this winter and they will go green. also today I took several friends for rides. I can't get enough of the enjoyment that I see people getting from the car. Offered to let them drive. Most declined.

Stressful couple of weeks, gloom of the season, separation from families. Been working hard on the Gen 1 Hot Rod fuel filler which really quit working effectively after adding the filler neck return bung for the EFI. The additional pressurized fuel overcame the capacity of the barely sloped filler tube. The tube filled with fuel and wouldn't drain because it sloped backwards to the gas cap. We got it mostly straight, rewelded the bung so it shoots directly into the fuel tank from the filler hose. So anyhow, there is that Red Mustang. I was all for letting bygones be bygones but was thinking about this might be my actual last drive in in the Hot Rod. I was shaking down the repair and concerned if the fuel filler setup would hold so I figured a huge fireball might be one way. I really am not that stupid, but then fate stepped in. The Mustang bumped the light. I hollered over to Ethyl, "Don't Look Ethyl!!! It was too late, she done loaded up on me. on the green we caught him and shut down at the top of second with a pretty decisive lead. Those 5.0's are no joke, I totally respect what you guys with them in the FFR Hot Rods must feel about the motors. Anyhow, enjoy the vid

Last night, after working nearly two weeks I finally got the fuel filler hose with the fuel return bung installed so that it worke3s reasonably well. Was able to fill the tank with the pump at half volume without interruption or kicking off. The fuel inlet on the tank is level with the Gas Cap Filler mount on the car. Without extensive body modifications, it is nearly impossible to mount the filler tube to get more than a level position visavis the fuel tank inlet. Adding the return line to the inlet hose created n issue with the fuel flow in the inlet overcoming the capacity as the fuel tended to flow back towards the gas cap and to remain in the tube. With the constant presence of fuel in the filler tube, the joints in the filler tube eventually leaked. I took the line out, installed a new bung in the filler tube that is pointed towards the fuel tank inlet, hoping to reduce the backpressure flow coming towards the Gas cap and to realigne the filler tube so it would drain completely. Was not totally nsuccessful in any endeavor but now at least the tank fills really easily without constantly kicking off the pump, and the backwash of fuel in the filler tube stays at 1/8 inch or lower.

The car seems to run better, less cavitation and aereation in the tank. I am still looking for a way to extend the inner portion of the return fuel bung to the bottom of the tank. I am looking at a new filler tube arrangement that runs the return through and down to the bottom of the tank through the filler inlet. Another approach is to modify the fuel sending unit so the return line does not run through the filler tube at all.

Built my first Ethyl in late 1963, first race was in early 1964. It was a Soap Box Derby Car. The crash helmets were awesome. So I was about 12 or 13 and signed up for this thing. My Dad showed me how to do the power tools . He was nervous as all get out. Local TV crew came by and filmed some of the building for a news article. There was no speaking as the newscasters were simply commenting on the Soap Box Derby as they were rolling the film. The bulk of the film was made by my mother who had a 8 mm movie camera. Amazing how I never really thought much of that camera during the day but now looking back she was very attuned to the things that are important. Anyhow, notice the 1964 Road Runner Car. I thought that was a cool prophecy years later when I saw it. Of course this one was about Wiley E. Coyote but I often wondered if the kid could claim an infringement from MOPAR. My car was Blue, it was the first in a long series of Ethyl Cars. We did not do very well, on our second run the turning buckle broke loose sending the car wildly out of control. Doesn’t look nearly as exciting in the film but I guarantee you a bunch of people had to clean their underwear. As you watch the video of the actual runs it is the last one and you can see the car skew at the bottom of the run. I was able just barely to keep control but the excitement from the spectators was very loud. I can paraphrase the PA Announcer and crowd for you beginning at the top of the run.

Announcer: Ladies and Gentlemen please step back out of the street and onto the curb, we want to give these young racers all the room they need
Crowd: Mumble mumble mumble
Announcer: Please back up off the street for your own safety!!!
Crowd; murmer murmer mumble mumble
Announcer: Get the F___ out of the G__D_____ street
Crowd; shrieeeeeeeeeeek aaaaaaagh runnnnnn!!!!!

Maybe the most awesome Mod ever. My son-in-law is a very talented luthier. I had asked him to build me a Stratocaster style guitar that would go with the Hot Rod. He does excellent work but had never really done finished autobody style painting. I knew the end result would be very good, I had no idea how awesome it would turn out. He still needs to set it up. I cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Thanks, I was hoping it would be a coupe body for the 33 frame. It looks good.

I'm not a fan of the SpeedStar body, a little too show-car for my taste. A purpose-built and sealed coupe would be my preference, but then I've been following the HR since '07 and still haven't ordered one. LOL

Stopped up to check on the Hot Rod yesterday. Met The owner of one of the metal body cars who is having his bodywork done at the same shop. Had a really great time. We took Ethyl out and about. He looked at a few things we did well and a few things we would change if we were at his stage. One thing that thrills me about the metal body cars is the cut out dash that gives full access to the wiring. I so wish I had been that smart. Shop had picked up a neat large lathe, used to turn crankshafts. I though it was cool.

Struggle with the Gen 1 fuel tank and filler system for a long time. Each time I thought I had it right, something would crop up and I’d have to start all over again. Not the least of the problems was failing to plan for a fuel return in the early assembly stage and later, when adding EFI, having to return fuel through the filler tube which I could never get aligned and flowing downward to the tank. The guys at 121 watched me struggle and when I asked for help, they suggested abandoning the in trunk filler cap, moving it to a press and screw cap mounted on the outside body between the top and the trunk lid. We solved the return issue with a Hyperfuel Bung. The bung inserts through a 1/2 inch hole in the tank and tightens against the inner an out walls like a rivenut. The bung fit like a glove. The tank wall was thicker than I anticipated but everything has mated up nicely. Very shortly we will complete the new filler tube setup and hopefully not have to look back.

Bill, were you having problems with the door opening on it’s own?

wrp
06-10-2021, 09:40 AM
The latch has a two catch feature where it can pop but still hold the door. I had it pop loose a couple of times, mainly when I had passengers lean against it. I would not call it a constant problem. The fiberglass tends to move and from time to time I have had to re adjust the doors I also figured this would help me keep the in line. My passenger side door had actually moved enough that the electric window would not power through the contacts I had installed on the door sill. Here is the completed fuel line filler we relocated to outside the trunk.

I see the C8 has the top off but windows up.

Sorry in advance, My opinion solely because it's a pet peeve of mine (not trying to insult any one who does this), but I never have, and probably never will understand why if you're going to have a car with a convertible top, or a removable top, that you have the top down (or roof off) but the windows rolled up.

If you're going to drive that way, then just drive with the top up (or roof on). To me, there really is nothing like the feeling of a convertible ride (with windows down), such a relaxing feeling, no matter the wind. I've done several trip from SoDak to Wisconsin (580+ miles) in my C6 vette with the top down, no windows rolled up. The breeze, the free feeling, the sun (or clouds), the different sounds normally not heard in a car with a hard top, just awesome, nothing like it!

I know some believe it cuts down on the wind but it just looks odd to me.

I have a BMW convertible and sometimes on the highway I put up the windows as the tire noise is just annoying as well as noise from large trucks. If it is chilly (like below 50) having the windows up means you can use the heater with a bit more effectiveness. It’s still better than putting the top up!

Good fun Bill.

I don't know if it's a Vancouver thing or a Canada thing but since I've started driving the '33 in June it doesn't matter who I'm beside they are compelled to get in front. I'm not pulling up looking for a drag, not revving the engine, just minding my own business. Doesn't matter which side they're on or if they're driving a Mazda, a Kia, or what. It's really starting to amuse me actually.

Not only a Canada thing Steve, happens in SoDak too. That or they just cruise next to you gunning it every once in a while egging you on to open it up.

Of course then there are the really neat encounters where people are going out of the way to follow the car and see it. The other night I had one guy follow me for a good 10 miles until I pulled into an local ice-cream place and sure enough he pulled in just to look at the car and get some info. Those encounters are always fun.

Some of you may have seen the Strat my son-in-law built to go along with my hot rod. I have really enjoyed it. He is a superb craftsman and I could never match his talent. The shop that painted my car is building a fabulous Studebaker Truck that I am in love with. I wanted to capture that look. I have already built some solo guitar DIY Kits so I picked up one of their scratch and dent Les Paul kits. The guys at the shop helped me paint the body. We are moving along towards completion. The headstock will be Ivory white with the logo in red inlayed. Here are some progress pictures.

So today I decided to go to hardwood headstock overlays. My hat’s off to you guys that can lay down a clean coat of paint first time every time. I bought some Bolivian Rosewood veneer and cut it to fit the headstock on the blue guitar. I was hoping for a different effect but I like the result. I will grind up some rosewood and make a putty with epoxy to fill the edges after gluing it on I am calling this guy Les Paul Zilla. It started life as a discounted scratch and dent guitar. The guys at 121 worked their hearts out to help me get a good finish on it. After screwing up what was a world class paint job I decided instead of throwing away the mess, try to bring it back. Sort of like a hot rod. I may yet paint the veneer white and do the red studebaker on the headstock. For now I am excited that the guitar is almost together. Been a tough summer with friends dying, my Dad being ill and yesterday a tree fell on his lake house. Lots of illness and deaths with many of my friends too. Joyful that I have the music to make and share. Also, going to get a guy to help inlay the headstock on the other Les Paul, looking for an Edelwiess.

So I walked on in and bought one, standing on the X where Elvis was handed his. Mine was Chinese and I will never be able to play it well, but still, it was fun.

There’s something about cars and guitars. I’m currently working on a MK4 and if that wasn’t enough I decided to build my first guitar from a StewMac kit. It's a Strat clone. I can’t play a lick but that doesn’t mean I can learn.

Probably inappropriate place to post but I miss working on the 33. Decided to stat a T-Bucket yesterday. We have a rolling chassis but we are going to replace the original frame rails with 2x4 steel. We will salvage the existing front suspension and we are going to look at a Jaguar IRS. Most likely an SBC, though EV is not off the rails.

When I was 3 years old, my parents bought me my first car. It was a beautiful red firetruck pedal car. I had my first rollover in that car riding it down a hill when I was about 4. That was when it got lodge in my brain that when you are in a car and it is rolling over, it is going to hurt. I found another little red firetruck from that era and the guys that painted my Hot Rod are helping me restore it.

In early 2021 my dad suffered a fall and was hospitalized for three weeks. When he was released we had to put him in a 24 x 7 skilled nursing care facility. He lived nearly 700 miles from me and really wanted to stay near his home. Rather than move him to our area I kept him where he wanted to be. 200,000 miles and two years later I lost him on December 31 2022. He is certainly in a better place, one he would rather be in. I spent two weeks every month in his home near the nursing facility. Over the time I spent many hours talking to him and revealing in the wonderful stories he had to share in life. I really missed my hot rods but not enough to even consider devoting time to them instead of him. Best investment I ever made. My friends in the DFW area who helped me have been the best suppoters one could ask for. They've done their best to support me and keep me cheered up through the tough times. I look forward to getting back to work. I may in fact finish the T-Bucket here in Tennessee by the lake dad and I enjoyed so much. For those of you here who have truly made me feel welcome, thanks. Watching your builds and sharing thoughts has kept me going through many long nights. Hopefully things will brighten up now and progress will pick up.

So, once again into the breach. Steering play was a nuisance and seemed getting worse. I have danced with that POS a number of times so I figured what the heck. Inspected the rack input shaft and 9/16 spline to 3/4 DD steering joint and discovered the 26 spline side of the joint had been dragged about a half inch downwards towards the back (figure 1). Plans changed when I got the joint off the shaft. (Figure 2). Further inspection revealed the entire connected series of Steering DD shafts had experienced a backwards movement of about the same distance. ****!!! (Figure 3) shows the backward movement of the DD steering shaft and the rear of the flange bearing. Moral of the story is there was a lot of movement of the DD shafts over time. I discovered that the lower shaft, connected to the 9/16 26 spline and 3/4 DD connector passed through the flange bearing and had two set screws on the front side of the bearing to set the DD shaft running through it from the input shaft back to the steering joint on the back side, shown in figure 3. Only problem was those set screws are supposed to be tight (Figure 4), and that steering joint on the back side is supposed to but up against the bearing’s backside. Obviously due to the movement. I have purchased a Burgeoson 9/16 to 26 spline steering joint and a new DD shaft. (Figure 5).

To continue comparison of the Borgeson Steering Joint images are at figures 6 and 7.

180142180141180143

We were concerned about the movement. It was most obvious on the input shaft to the rack and the gap between the steering joint and the rear of the flange bearing. WeÂ’ve decided to go with a Borgeson slip joint which puts a safety in the DD shaft line to compensate for movement of the shafts. As an example, we theorized the chassis may flex at high speeds on concrete highways with expansion joints or bad potholes. The slip joint will require a 1 inch DD shaft and a 1 inch DD to 3/4 DD steering joint. I'll post more once we’ve go that done.

Couple of notes here. First my car is a gen 1 car and few if any of the steering components bear any resemblance for the Gen II and beyond Cars.

Any of you that have movement in the 26 spline fitting on the steering joint on the input shaft, that ain’t right, find out the problem and fix it.

Even if you have the best 4-5 shops in the world build your car for you, get the manual and go over every single nut and bolt. If you build it yourself, read the instructions or you will die and take someone with you.

Just for grins I made some videos of my previous setup steering shafts and joints in action, enjoy.

So having gotten older and much less dexterous, I’ve been struggling a lot with some under dash challenges. I broke a fan ground while installing my new steering components. Of course that turned my fans off. Being highly technical and intelligent. I yanked a fuse out. Replacing a fuze under the dash with an AC installed is a *****. Finally put on my problem solving hat and purchased a scaffold. What I couldn’t get done in three days I got done in a few minutes this afternoon. Found the problem with the fan was that I had broken a ground wire screwing around with the under dash steering shaft and ujoints. I know you young guys think I am funny but for you older guys, this saved my attitude.

Been driving this car a long time. Never had/installed the Windshield Trim. On the spur of the moment I went out and bought some cheap stuff and spent a couple of hours putting it on. I think it turned ou pretty good. Try the back window next. El cheap stuff comes in a roll so first thing I did was mock it up on the car leaving the sticky stuff unmolested.. Then I cleaned off the glass edges and fit a small piece to see if it would look worth a ****. Once committed I fit the flex strip to the windshield outer glass edges and taped it down where possible. I let it sit over night to get the coil out of it from being rolled up in the package. This morning I slipped the edge of the wax backing off and smoothed it down flat on the windshield. Fitment of the curves seemed tricky but was in the end doable. The lower corners needed some work so I got some right angle ornamental pieces to set them up right. I like the results. I guess only time will tell on how it lasts.

a couple of tips before the install - be sure the pick up for the pump is all the way at the bottom of the tank so you can use all the available gas before running out - with the small capacity you want to be able to use it all.
also, verify and adjust as necessary the fuel level sender float assembly if you want an accurate gas gauge.

Sorry for the repost, do kinda need help though. Putting the Boyd Tank in next week. After 8 years of dealing with the Gen I OEM tank I've decided to move forward. I would very much appreciate a pointer to the Boyd tank installation, especially the filler neck connection to the tank. Here is the request.

1. Did you use the internal or external pump?
2. Will the internal pump work with a carbureted engine that has been converted to Holley sniper?
3. Has anyone attempted to use the Holley LIDAR fuel level sender?
4. Are the Boyd vents adequate?
5. Any problems sloshing back through the vent with the Boyd (I got the rollover vent option)?
6. Where did you route the vent tube (pictures)?
7. Anyone go in from the rear to take the old tank out and install the Boyd (pictures)?
8. I have a converter to convert the Boyd sending unit signal to work with the Auto Meter Fuel Gauge, Where did you mount the unit (pictures)?
9. I would be grateful for any help/advice

Been a long year, lots of busy but finally got around to beginning the install on the Boyd Fuel Tank today. Day 1 was mostly devoted to cutting the old tank out. I could write that it was a snap, just took a few minutes and was a completely straight forward fun process. I do enjoy working with my friends, but the truth is that was a pain in the royal ***. Starting my lessons learned early. First off, never install a waterfall in one piece, trisect it so you can remove it with the rollbar in tact allowing access to the front of the tank. It is not easy to find and unbolt the fasteners on the front of the tank. I am told the tank slides out of the front. Naturally I had to try it the other way, without vaseline. Anyhow, in a couple of hours we got it. Now to clean up and rewire it. Enjoy the video

Halfway through the install on the Boyd Tank. We had believed we could install the tank from the rear and thus avoid pulling half the damned car apart. Turns out untrue. Regardless of the solution, Gen I, later Gen, or Boyd, the issues I have dealt with are inherent to the design of the tank which rises to a point nearly level with the top of the filler cap, leaves no room for access and maintenance, repair, or proper venting. While this may just be my opinion, several others have made similar complaints. Slow fill times are a result of the difficulty in properly venting the application. My opinion is that you will never be able to vent the tank effectively with the design. Lack of baffles in earlier versions only assists the vent tube in pouring gas out of the tank on the street. I find constraints with the width of the footprint, difficult accessibility to the fixtures and fittings, lack of ease to replace or service elements, such as the in tank fuel pump, the tendency for the filler tube cap to tank inlet to deteriorate and lose the slope necessary to assist in filling the tank with the otherwise unoptimal venting tube routing available and for the Gen I lack of baffling to be barriers to what I really want in the car. Keep in mind that I have over 100,000 miles on the chassis and fuel supply system. If you figure I fill the tank every day I drive the car, never let it go below half full, and I have now been driving it since 2018, that is surely more than 2,000 fill ups, each putting pressure on the filler tube and I have had to remove, reconstruct, and replace the filler tube over a dozen times as the non fuel handling grade radiator hose connectors just wear out. I'm sitting here looking at nearly $900 worth of Boyd tank and am now two days into cutting the gen 1 tank out. I am studying this and asking myself, isn't the design flawed?

Had the designed tank been 2-4 inches shorter in height and 1-2 inches wider at the base and top it would have been possible to remove and reinstall the unit from the trunk, replace the intank fuel pump by sliding the entire unit backwards 6-7 inches, access and work on the fixtures at top (such as the vent tube), The capacity would not have been reduced significantly, and the addition of a vented canister trap or a vent tube route higher than the actually top of the tank, and slope the filler tube at an angle that would not be compromised over time by continuous use. Further, use of the entire back shelf would have allowed for a tank 6-7 inches deep, 30-40 inches wide, and 15-17 inches wide. It would be possible to get about 15 gallons in capacity and to have an accessible, rentable, clean smelling fuel supply solution. The tradeoff would be loss of about 7-10 inches in the trunk where I currently have the battery sitting, meaning I'd have to relocate it. Ive been looking at the Rhodes race car street series tank https://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/xlarge/rhc-18-2172-su_nt_xl.jpg which is 30 by 17 by 7. I can re-fabricate it or build to similar dimensions. I know many of you have had no fuel supply problems at all and am not wishing to in any way malign other solutions, but this has been the only issue I have been unhappy with for nearly 9 years. And I am wanting to try something different.

I’m with you. Even though I have a Gen 1 with the newer tank that fills fast I still have the smell of gas. It’s much worse when the tank is at 3/4 or more full.
It sloshes around comes out the vent and soaks the charcoal canister which vents to atmosphere. Purging the canister thru the purge valve on the intake doesn’t help.
Out of desperation I removed the canister and installed two 1/2 PSI check valves in the vent line. See crummy drawing.
They are in parallel but in opposite directions, both go to atmosphere.
If the tank needs to vent or pull in air it can. This has reduced the gas smell in the cabin and garage by 75%.

Well stuck my foot in my mouth, after hanging on to this beautiful; new Boyd Tank for nearly a year or better we decided to go ahead and put it in. I still think the Rhode's Tank offers a lot of potential. But to have to gather parts, refabricate the trunk space and the behind the waterfall space, it seemed more prudent to give the new tank a shot. I am hoping the fact that it is baffled will make a noticeable improvement. Still stuck with a very unreliable filler tube solution and personally doubt the vent will work well because of the height of the tank itself. Roof hasn't been off the car since 2017 and the waterfall has also been in place a number of years. So now we are in to day three of the project.

Finished, mostly, the gas tank install today. Am very pleased thus far. The Boyd Tank is beautiful. Fitment was difficult, requiring some squeezing, trimming and holding the breath. We poured two 5 gallon cans of gas into it and there seemed to be no venting issues. I was very worried about my Sniper which had been running well but the intank 340 LPH Aeromotive seems to be very efficient, makes a lot less noise. Car seems to crank better in fact, especially since we improved the grounding. For my own shortcomings I did not study the Boyd accessories page where there are quite a few filler tube solutions, ergo we wound up with a typical rubbish hose. Very tough to ensure the hose slopes from the filler cap downward to the tank inlet since the two are virtually on level. I did notice the shoulders on the front side of the tank will create3 some tight fit issues if service is needed around the tank We used an auto bridge connector to sync the sending u nit with the gauge and thus far it seems to b working fine. Hopefully, with a little sunshine tomorrow, we will get to drive it down the road a bit and to fill it from a gas pump. I am anxious to see if the baffles will ave a positive effect as the Gen I tank left more gas on the rod than the stroker motor burned.

Video adds footage at the end, showing basically start to finish removing and replacing gas tank.

Brought the car home today. No leaks that I noticed, took her to large parking lot to cut some circles to see if there was any spillage through the vent tube. Apparently the baffles worked well.

Can't seem to get a break. Got the car home perfectly fine on a 45 mile drive. Had a little vent trouble topping off at the gas station. Next day cranked her up to drive to the gas station and measure how much used from the last top off. Did that and took her for a short jaunt. Hit it hard for a good pull. Pull went great, dropped it off to cruise. I've been having trouble for a while with the throttle hanging when the pedal was released, it would hang around 2000 rpm and I had to blip the throttle to get it to idle down. I have worked hard on the accelerator cable, made sure there was no binding or carpet binding under the pedal. When I got out of the throttle one this hit, the TPS went nuts as did the AFR and Timing. I figured I had either burned the in-tank pump out or that the new pump was putting out too much fuel pressure. I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it is sitting right on 58 PSI. Next thought was that I burned out the TPS. Got a new one coming and will try it over the next few days

So I got the new TPS for the Holley 4150 Stealth Sniper. Hooked it up and the TPS is working right now. I turn the ignition switch to on and it is setting at zero and goes to 100% when I mash the loud pedal. Late here tonight so I won't start it up for the neighbors sake but looking forward to trying it in the morning.

TPS wasn't the problem. Problem was the blades on the secondaries were misaligned over time due to buildups on them and in the bore of the throttle body. Loosened the blades, snapped them a couple of times to recenter them and the car is working great.

Old Girl done proud this weekend at Texas Thaw 2024. Got top ten award for the car show. Track was cold and we didn't get a good pass in but it was a good weekend anyway.

Embarrassing, mid 8s trapping 90. First on track pass ever in the car and first time since 2013 I've been down the track. I did learn I do not h ave my suspension setup very well at all. Still, it was fun to stretch it out. Time slips didn't print, 60' were in the 2.0 range. Was very cold track
