One thing I didn't point out was the elegant solution for the engine compartment skirts. They fabricated a cut away so the skirts can be removed without removing the lights. really first class touch

So we took the car over to a Fiberglass guy today to repair some of my unnecessary holes and fix a couple of other areas. He will also set the gaps on the doors, trunk, hood and around the grill, finish the front fenders and get the car ready for final prep which should start next week.

Also while I was there, noticed a very good looking all steel 39 from one of the customers

They got a lot of work done on the car this week. Emphasis was on building the structural integrity in some of the weak areas and adding material to areas that are short. There were several holes I drilled for the Quik Latches that were filled and a lot of building up of material on the door edges. Extensive work will be required to fit the grill to the nose cone, hood, and hood skirts. They built a lip on the rear fenders and still have some work to do on the front fenders. One disappointment was the top seam of the two piece door along the windows was not bonded with matte. There was only resin in there and a good deal of it was built up. The result was a series of weak joints so there will have to be some pretty hefty work on the doors.

Thanks, got another update today. The doors are molded in two pieces then joined together. For my car there was a very significant weakness at the top seam. Instead of a good bond using glass, the seam was bonded with only resin. Being hard to get to, Tom decided to go across the top of the door and lay a couple of glass layers to strengthen it structurally. Also, the nose cone was askew or warped. We decided that it will need to be split, narrowed and reassembled. I noticed they sent pics of the front fenders being worked on as well.

I've been avoiding the doors while I play with other modifications for the reasons above. I think some of the glass did get a little better as production #s increased. I was thinking about putting a TEE inside the door along the mold line to stiffen it up. I have to get the glass in to check clearance , but, you may want to look at that. Make sure you get the suicide safety latches also. The whole door needs stiffening and I would put taller stops in place of the hex bolts supplied on the hinge stops.

Looking good!!

Got the car back from the Fiberglass shop today and they are getting ready to begin final prep. One area that needs work is the trunk latch body. Structurally if needs something to stiffen it up. Was thinking about putting a stainless tanks in it with a spigot. Sort of like my grandfather's 33 had.

Lots of progress towards final prep this week. Shot a coat of primer on the roof, major progress on the prep for the rest of the body. There is a substantial weakness in the trunk area around the latch so they built a compartment in there. I wanted to put a tank with a spigot in it.

Thinking seriously about paint now. Looking at a two tone combination of Blue and Black or Silver with an accent pinstripe. I have a 33 Ford metal Diecaet Car so I thought I would try a couple of colors out on it. I sanded it and primered it and have laid down the metallic blue on the top. I will put the silver on one side of the bottom and the metallic black on the other side. I may do it again in Pearlescent Blue/Black of i get a chance.

Originally was going to do a Red White and Blue Theme as a tribute to a friend of mine's Top Fuel Nostalgia Car that was destroyed last year. Got thinking with invite someone to vandalize it so kind of accidentally backed into the Silver and Blue. Actually have thought hard about a single color. Kory really seems to want to two tone it though. Thought perhaps I could offset the colors with a silver, Gold, Yellow, or red stripe

So looking at a color wheel yellow is not really considered an accent color for green. I would have him do some more in red, red-orange, and red-purple. That is what is across from the green on a color wheel and "considered" a good matching color to work with. But hey, if you like the yellow, then go for it.

wrp
03-19-2018, 07:36 PM
Yep Tim I am pretty much aware of the color wheel implications. I had a Car once that was all metallic green with Gold pinstripes. I put the yellow on there because I was trying to figure a shade of gold that would look okay against the silver. One of my initial thoughts was a solid color, green, with the gold accents. I did put the red on there. What many cannot see is the trim piece that runs the length of the car at the color break

Bill, I like the dark blue solid with a yellow or gold stripe and definitely a buckskin interior. Same scheme in Emerald Green or Ruby Red would also look fantastic. Two-tone blue bottom/silver top, green bottom/lighter green top, and red/silver would also look awesome if Kory really needs to get his two-tone jones on.

Narrowing down. After weeks of looking at Green my artistic adviser denies ever saying she like it, especially with the silver. On the bright side, 121 Rod & Restoration has asked me for my choice of paint chips. So we are looking at the final coat very soon. I am pretty impressed in several areas. First the seams are very well aligned, as are the panels. Second the structurally challenged areas have been reinforced very well and there is no weakness on the body panels. We even foamed the hood where some delimitation occurred. I am especially happy with the fitment of the trunk with the shock kit and the false bottom we created. It stiffened up the rear panel sufficiently there are no issues latching the trunk or unlatching it. I am pretty stoked. Here is the last primer coat.

I am interested to see how they have done the paint this way versus full off body painting and then re-assembling the vehicle and all its components or even body on painting and the doors, trunk hood etc... done separately and then re-assembled. I was looking to have mine fully feathered and blended and then fully painted, in and out, then re-assembled. now i may be questioning that a bit, can you provide insight on why they/you are painting it in this way?? THX!

One thing that I am learning is that this is an art form mores than an engineering spectacle. True the engineers come up with grander solutions that make us envy their talent, but at the end of the day you just skin the cat the best you can. I figured out up front that extensive body work and prep was not something I really excelled at though I love the concept. The car has been partially assembled and exposed to the elements for nearly 10 years. The exposure to heat and cold had accomplished a good deal of seasoning for the body, ie swelling and shrinking. The body was in position, doors mounted, trunk mounted. No roof mount, hood, engine skirts or the current fenders. The approach was totally up to the shop as I had no clue on how to approach this. Kory explained to me that he would rather tweak the doors, hood, roof, skirts, fenders, and trunk as opposed to having to try the potentially major re alignment issues once removed and reinstalled. I used the term "cutting and jambing" meaning precisely what they did, cutting the edges and the jambs, plus the undersides of the hood and trunk, inner doors and dash. This also gave them the advantage of working out the number of coats of paint needed on the smaller jamb and edges to ensure the final panels were blended. More than 75% of the time on this car was spent aligning the doors, hood, trunk and reinforcing structurally weak areas plus mounting the hood roof and gas shock kit for the trunk. That is after I have driven the car for over a year as a roadster with the gelcoat thinking I was a hotshot cause everything worked. I think Kory just felt he could do the job better this way than painting everything off the car then assembling it. I am not sure there is a right way. I see some beautiful work being done by guys with the bodies off.

I am really pleased with the door latches. I had originally went with the pull posts. The guys at 121 convinced me the cable pulled latches and exterior hands would be the way to go. I am very pleased with the look and feel of the one that they have installed thus far. They have not done the final alignment on the doors or bolt down of the roof yet but the entire mechanism works very smoothly. Also the engine is cleaned up now and the firewall cleaned off so things are really starting to pop. Finally we are down to a few nuts and bolts left. I cannot tell what was due to contamination and what was actually left over. The guys also added a opener switch for interior lighting.

Very interesting project at the shop. Kory has a 1928 Chevrolet Dump Truck. This truck spent its life in the Gold Fields in California. It has a 6 cylinder in it and the hydraulic dump bed works. Kory has a 2.5 4 cylinder to get it back to original, and they are missing a door. looks like an exciting project.

Shifting gears a bit, I went out to the Summit Racing showroom in Arlington Texas today. I suppose I expected there to be a lot of stuff. What I did not expect was the quality of the layouts. You can view some of the arrangements in the photographs. It was a very enlightening experience. Want to buy a NOS Kit? They have one laid out on a display board with all the accessories. I would recommend anyone planning a build consider visiting one of the Summit Showrooms. Even if you have already begun or completed your build, you can take an idea and follow it through there. The employees don't ask you what the make and model of you car is when you ask them a question. I watched obviously senior technicians explaining to junior personnel the appropriate way to set up internals for NOS. They were at the level of detail for ring gaps. I was just amazed at what I found.

Not quite sure I understand how that is going to work?? Adding a angle piece on the inside of the door cutout, then there is some type of wiper that attaches??

wrp

Two angle pieces one to each side of the slot then the whiskers glued to the vertical run on the angle. We will have more pictures this coming week. We chose the angle iron approach to avoid using rivets in the top. We felt the panel bond running the length of the slot on each side would give us more strength. I personally like the notion of a cap across the entire top of the door, this just seems to be less difficult.

Looks great Bill.
Can't believe it's the same car.
Hey, someone mentioned in another thread you knew about some other local car shows.
How about some details?

Kellers is picking back up. There is a GTG at Stacy's Furniture on McDermott and 75 on Thursday nights. There is cars and coffee of course, and there is generally a monthly muscle car show at Gazebos over by the Presbyterian Hospital in Plano. There are a number of special events, Goodguys, Autorama, Pontiac Nationals. teal shoot me a pm and let me know what you are interested in

Never been to Summit, I do buy a lot of part from them including the NOS kit I bought back in 1989 and still have it on my other car. It's gone from a single stage one injector to a 2 stage 10 injector setup.
Thanks for the pics.

We did have to put stops on the window mechanism to keep them from going too far upwards. There are gaps at the front and end of the windows we haven't decided how were are going to close.

So stopped by 121 Rod & Restoration today. Kory and Aaron have touched up and rebuffed the final areas. Abel has worked on alignment issues while Kory has touched up the grill. Car is really looking good. We decided not to bring it out of the shop, we are going to add the rest of the HVAC components and finish that effort..

I have a confession. It may have been me that killed the site a couple of days ago. I figured I would upload all my pictures into an album/Gallery, then try to comment them so people doing searches could hopefully find useful photos. Well I was minding my own business uploading left and right and discovered I had 192,000 photos. The site filters stopped me at 520. I have since reduced them to a degree down to around 430 ish. I hope you new builders will find them useful, there is still a lot not covered. I may take down some of the glamour shots and replace them with things like pulling the engine etc.

We are mocking the Air Conditioner and it should be finished soon. Couple more tweaks and its done, for now. Looking back, some of you that have only come in for the last year may not know that at one time I did a lot of work on the car myself. The guys at SNL Performance and 121 Rod & Restoration certainly did their share, especially in areas I could not have been successful. Travis Hooper, Christian Livingston, and Gary Gutierrez also pitched in and made significant contributions. Roy at Leo's upholstery in McKinney hit an absolute home run. Dan Ruth and Tim Whitteaker were always there with advice and very well constructed newly designed parts that turned the corner. Dave and the ladies and gentlemen at Factory Five also made a significant difference. Also got to give credit to all the members of the forum who shared time and knowledge, offered advices, and provided examples. Going through my pictures I found some older shots from the year or so I drove the completed, registered, and licensed Roadster version of this car on the street. I also turned a few wrenches on it to get it together and to keep it going. Three biggest efforts were rebuilding the SBC that lost a lifter early on; removing, repairing, and replacing the Ford 8.8 Rear end, and installing the adjustable 4 link with the double adjustable QA1's.

They are going back together with the car and today took a few moments to pull the Radiator and Front Grill. Sent the radiator down to the radiator shop to get flushed, tested and if necessary repaired. The cooling system would not maintain a full volume of coolant, indicating there may well have been a pinhole.

Got looking at the trunk and trying to figure out how to carry stuff in it without all the rattling around. We went out and got some Kaisen Foam, padded the bed with heat barrier and cut the foam to go in. I can develop several trays, one for tools, one for road trips, one for glass mason jars etc.
