Are there any rules of thumb or best practices for locating the driver side mirror? The manual is pretty vague about how and where to position it.

Are you talking about the FFR fender mirror? If so the best place is in the box it came in then the round file. Get yourself a mirror that mounts on the side of the windshield frame. Something like this;

I agree with Rich; the side mirror provided with the kit doesn't provide any visibility (other than the fender, of course).

I agree that the factory mirrors don't work well nor do I find them attractive.
With that said I installed Porsche 356 Areo Mirrors from Sierra Madre.
The come in flat and convex versions and are good quality.

Also, Mark Reynolds has some nice bits that mount to the wind wings that work well too.

I used the wind-wing mounted mirrors from our vendor: http://www.thedreamcarcompany.com/
Very nice quality, but definitely on the pricy side compared with the similar version linked in an earlier post.

The breeze mirrors that attach to the wind wings are well worth the money.

Nope...they mount to the wind wing. I have them and they work great. Once you get your wind wings set in place they pretty much stay put. Adjust the mirror and you are set. Mine are spot on every time I climb in the car.
The third picture in on the Breeze site shows them mounted to the wind wing mounting hinge. They work great.

1st build - Mk4 Roadster #9319, received 4-10-18. IL registration 8/6/19. Moser 8.8. 3 Link. Wilwood brakes. Blue Print 427, Holley 750, TKO 600, 0.64 OD. Paint Dec 2020. Ruby Red with Carbon Flash Black metallic stripes.
I'm totally aware of how they mount. I posted a link to them with pictures. My point is that they do not attach directly to the windshield frame like the mirror you posted a photo of. They are mounted to the wind wing brackets, as you said. Whether that's the same thing or different than saying they mount to the wind wings, is semantics IMO.

I wanted the look of the original street cobra, so I used the FFR fender mirror and can tell you from experience that it is not good for seeing directly behind the car, but is good for seeing the lane to the left for lane changes.

I had the Raydyot mounted on the fender, then another brand mounted on the fender, then just went to the Raydyot mounted with the ********** brackets. I haven’t had a lot of driving since installing, but definitely an improvement over mounting them on the fender.

Here are my Peep mirrors mounted to the windshield frame. They are inside the wind wings so no distortion. I have 4” flat in the DS and 4” convex on the PS. Work great!

Hello all, I make these mirrors. I'm a vendor on this forum. Mark Reynolds at Breeze has been outstandingly gracious with me through the years to offer you the mirrors on his website as well. I greatly appreciate his partnership. I'll be glad to answer any questions that you have concerning how they mount. They do in fact mount using the wind wing hinge. Depending on the style in which you decide to install them they do in fact move. I designed them so that you could in fact move them away should you need too. If you are using the original style wing hinge they will move easily out of your way should that be needed. An example would be if you are running your top and side curtains. The wing will push out of the way as you enter or exit the car. The wing is then pulled back against the wing hinge block for a nice solid no vibration ride. The mirror head is a nice snug pivot that holds it setting even if bumped. The mirror assembly is polish billet aluminum, every part is proudly made right here in the USA. There is a ton of work that goes into making the mirrors. More than most realize. The one thing that I can't do is apologize for the quality you get with the finished product. I don't just crank these out on a massive scale, these are made to order. I have had many opportunities to take that same design and modify that to fit some cars that utilized a slightly different hinge bracket. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to please your customer. I appreciate the opportunity. I very much appreciate your support.
