Thread: is there a definitive ABS thread?

    Question is there a definitive ABS thread?

    searching for "ABS" doesn't give much, and spelling antilock, anti-lock, abs brakes, etc is a bit cumbersome... maybe have owners update their threads with tags with ABS?

    if there is one (or some) - can we get a sticky? or a FAQ Forum for commonly asked tech items?

    Hi Toadster,

    I have a Mustang Cobra 1999 4 channel Bosch unit on my build... not hooked in yet. I'll see if I can dig up some docs I found along the way. The wiring pin-outs are the critical info I don't have handy. It's on an old PC not with me where I am now. I don't know if a 3-channel unit will work on a IRS. Which do you have?

    Lots of good info on this link for the 4-channel 1998-2004 Mustang ABS. Note: these years do not have the throttle control connection that later models have.... that backs off the gas when applying brakes.

    Are newer abs controllers available? ‘98 and ‘08 controllers are 10-20 years old...

    Rebuilt or replacement parts are available for older units. I've had the 4 channel bosch ABS in 9 street cars and loved it (Ford, lincoln, subaru, bmw, mercedes)over the last 29 years and never had a failure. Other than severe corrosion, the older units look serviceable. From what I've read, most racers do not use ABS, it's more for street cars on variable road surface conditions.

    It would be a good google search to see if anyone has adapted the newer mustang ABS units without all the traction control throttle links. I'll be adding mine after it gets plated for the road.

    Newer ABS systems now include traction control and some use stability control as well. That being said, you will need more than just wheel speed sensors to make it functional. You will need to connect the ABS to other modules through a CAN network to make the system functional. I tried to attach a block diagram for a 2019 ABS system (for a Mustang) for reference.

    The reason for using a system 20 + years old is that these are not integrated into the OBD2 systems in those cars. The 3 channel system in the 94/95 Mustang as I linked to is by far the easiest to plumb and wire into a F5R car. Just my $0.02

    Lots of used 4-channel units on ebay... if you are using IRS. Solid rear is good for 3 channel. Make sure you get the multi-pin/socket plug and as much of the wires to spice into, it's part of the front harness. the color codes are important. I'm pretty sure other Ford vehicles from the same era have the unit. Traction control isn't anything I'm looking for.

    Much of the Content that is linked in Greg’s post on FFCars is lost forever. His web server had a catastrophe years ago and he was never able to recover the images. Sad really considering the time and energy he put into it. Much of what is on FFCars is all that remains of his work.

    The content on VeryUsefulInfo.com was collected in my own documentation I collected a while back. I haven’t implemented it in my build yet though.

    I have the same 1999 Mustang Cobra 4 channel ABS Controller mentioned earlier, for the very same reasons mentioned. I got it NITB on eBay a while back for $150. Russ Thompson hooked me up with ABS sensor brackets for the front spindles supplied in the complete kit. I have a Cobra IRS setup as well, so it has the ABS sensor mounts on the pumpkin. I bought new tone rings for the factory five supplied half shafts. Boy, those were fun to install (not!). I then needed the ABS Module Bracket & Wire Harness plug from MP Auto Salvage. They sent an incomplete harness so I’m going to end up rewire it. They also sent sensors but they were in bad shape. I decided I’m going to install the module bracket without the controller for now, and plumb the lines through a billet ABS delete block. Overall I’m $250 invested And will wind up spending another $350+ before I’m done. I’ll tackle the final implementation as a future enhancement project. Too many other things to focus on first.

    I decided to buy new ABS sensors. The ones I got from salvage with unit were pretty chewed up. Small bits of gravel can kick up and get spun between the exciter rings and sensor. I'm using a T-bird pumpkin and left the exciter rings on when I got the half shafts done. I'm also replacing the SN95 hubs which came with the salvage spindles up front. The exciter rings on these oem look like rusty bottle caps. The replacements have the nice square tooth exciter ring design.

    Mark (GM engineer) has been using bosch units on pro touring builds for a few years now. Some of his earlier build threads go into a lot of details about how to set it up. I can't find exact posts, but you can search around through his threads.
