It is fine to turn off the 12v to the cluster when the key is off or the battery switch is off.
The main odometer is stored in eeprom so that info is not lost.
The TRIP odometer is stored in ram and will be lost when removing power from the cluster.

There is also 12v hot going to the Subaru ECU. If you turn it off you lose it's learned memory.
After momentarily disconnect my Subaru battery, the engine take 3-4 revolutions to start. Normally 1-2.
