Cobra irs axle girdle cover - ford racing

Rate this Entry
Hello All -- I have recently received my FF MK4 on April 14th and am making some headway. I have seen some info on the forum with regards to fitting the Cobra IRS Axle Girdle Cover by Ford Racing. I have an 8.8 differential from a Lincoln MK VIII, installed a Eaton Truetrac differential with 3:55 gears. The differential is all painted with the new rear cover installed. As I research, I am finding that it wont fit unless I remove the cover. Please tell me it isn't so. I have seen a video where someone installed the pumpkin (did not have the dressed up Axle Cover) thru the rear suspension bars but the did not remove the rear cover.

I attended the build school in the beginning of February and so far am moving right along on removing the panels. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The only way to make it fit without removing the cover is to grind a small amount of metal from either the top or the bottom of the differential (or both). Don't do that. I did and it was a massive waste of time. You are better off (although perhaps not by much) separating the diff and cover, installing them in the frame, then bolting them together in the frame. I would strongly suggest making 2 or 3 studs to line up the cover, which will likely save some aggravation. I could see myself with blood and RTV on my hands without a few studs to line up the cover.

Jacob - You were correct. The damn thing does not fit with the cover on. I had to remove it and wrestle it into place, block it with wood and reseal the cover. It does not fit the way FF suggests the install.
