It looked easier to drop the engine rather than pull it out the top.

I disconnected all the hoses and wires from the top side.
I removed the sub-frame from the bottom (about 10 bolts)
Connected hoist to support the weight.

Removed strut top bolts, engine support bolts and transmission support bolts, Shifter linkage, exhaust coupler and brake lines.
Dropped the engine onto some dollies.

The Engine, Transmission, exhaust, and suspension all came out together. I would do it this way the next time also.

Thats the way I do it when I am taking everything out, it is the best, and least dramatic fashion.

How difficult is it to remove all of the front support structure? Does it need to be cut off?

The bumper unbolts from the front. The subframe unbolts fron the bottom. The rest is just thin sheetmetal. I used a angle grinder with a metal cutoff disc.

It was 2 nice, I decided to start Autocrossing with it. I did my first ever 2 week ago in indiana. I plan on running autocross all summer out of the cincinnati SCCA.

The one i'm disassembling is a 2006 off of copart for 900 plus fees. Both cars are Black wagon NA 2.5L

The bumber and radiator were pushed in enough to shatter half of the plastic cam sprocket. Can someone suggest what test I should do to see if the damage is any deeper?

I dropped the engine, trans, front crossmember, steering system and front suspension at once out the bottom. It made easy work for disassembly IMO.

Take off all the belts and crank pulley than the timing covers, and coils/plugs, check to see if the belt is still in time, if it is slowly crank it over and listen for any valve slap or ping metal on metal etc, if you do hear this "stop cranking it",and its time take off the valve covers and take a closer listen. If it is valve to piston it is time to tear it apart. If you don't hear this bad news, run a compression and or leak down test. Hopefully you will be fine, but if a cam gear is cracked, sounds iffy.
If the belt is out of time, it will most likely have damage.
Try this simple stuff first. If you need advice on test pm me
