Steering wheel problem.

I am to the part in the manual for my 33 where it says to mount the steering wheel. I have a chrome tilt column. When I put the adapter on and hand tighten the nut 1/8 turn the whole unit locks up. It is like the part is incorrect or machined wrong. The adapter falls all the way down the column to the top and hits without the nut even on. I thought there should be some sort of air gap so it could spin. Also the bottom of the column does not look round to me. I do not think that is causing the lockup problem though. Any help would be appreciated. T.W.:confused::confused::confused:
