Here is a thread with what I have done so far. I started with a 2002 WRX donor with 276K on it. I lucked out and it had a rebuilt long block in the trunk. Lot's of this was on the working on the donor thread but I wanted one spot just for my build. Here is the car and coming apart. I hope you enjoy it.
P.S. I have a 33 build thread also.

Here is the depowered rack. I replaced the boots and tierod ends. Also the front and rear wheelbearings, rotors, pads, balljoints, control arm bushings, CV boots and painted everything after clean up. I used Eastwood products mostly.

On the engine I used the CCR longblock that came in the trunk. I got with AJW and they hooked me up with a larger turbo, intercooler, injectors, S/S headers, boost controller, New clutch, P/P, Flywheel, Intake hoses and cold air package. I cleaned and painted stuff as well as replaced all hoses, Tstat and anything that needed to be replaced. With 276K that was a lot of stuff. The trans I had rebuilt with a Cusco diff.

Here is everything I have ready so far. I have all the donor parts listed on the FFR site here in this picture. I laid them out as if I am waiting on the kit. I am due to get it on 8/3/13. Meanwhile I go to pick up my 33 kit on Monday 2/4/13. This will keep me busy till 818 time comes.

What do you have two garages one for the dirty work and one for the clean. That trans looks great. Did you blast it then clear it?

No that is just duct tape. I am waiting for the blockoff plate from the kit.

I made it to FFR on 2/4/13 and got my 33 kit. Both 818s and r were out for testing. I was bummed I could not see one in person. I did see a 818 chassis with seats. I'll post its picture later. All the FFR guys say it is coming along fine but still much to do. More news will come in a week or so.

WOW! You are WAY TOO organized and clean for a car guy!
The parts look fantastic!
What are you plans for the 33? (I'm amazed that you are going to build '33 while you wait for your 818).
Very cool!

Well I made it to and from FFR fine. Here is the only 818 photo I could get. The cars were out for testing and this was under a large shelf. There is not much to see we have not already seen. But it was nice to touch the frame in person

I am interested to know if the cars will use power brakes or not... Seems like the 818R they are testing does not but this picture has a booster.
Mechie3
02-07-2013, 08:53 AM
I think in the go kart videos the booster was simply capped off. It's likely there just to reuse the stock stuff. I'm not knowledgable enough to know how to remove the boost and make it full manual myself without going to a whole new assembly.
RM1SepEx
02-07-2013, 12:18 PM
I think we will end up unboosted with a proportioning valve
boosted will be verrrrry touchy with so much less weight and the bias will be all wrong.

I think we will end up unboosted with a proportioning valve...
I sure hope so. Despite it being the norm for most cars, I'm not really a fan of power brakes. Too hard to feel what's going on, and too easy to apply to much (which is not so much of an issue with ABS, but still...).
RM1SepEx
02-07-2013, 08:52 PM
My plan: no brake booster, no ABS, depowered steering rack
I want maximum "feedback" like when I autocross my Rotax DD2 kart!

I finalized my 818S order today. I added powercoat frame, all the carbon bits and the shift knob. I go on 8/19/13 to pick it up. I got to get my 33 kit done before that so I have room in my shop. Though it is great to have these kind of problems. LOL.

Well I safely made it to FFR and picked up my 818S. I know it has been said before but, the car is awesome in person. Pictures do it no justice IMO. I met Dave Smith and had a short talk with him. Truly a car guy through and through. Tony was very helpful with hints as he was with my 33. Dave you have a great crew working for you. Everthing fit in my 6x12 enclosed trailer. Unfortunatly my camera died after one picture. I made it home last night and will unpack later today. I must go get my 33 from the pinstriper today before it rains.

Those are 2 new sets of the old style metal shelves you put together. I visited my brother in Pa. on the way home. He was going to throw them away. I said I'll take them. I am going to start inventory this weekend. I may not start the build for a few weeks. I am installing a 4 post lift in my barn to store my 33 up and out of the way when I am not driving it. I can park the 818 under it later also.
wallace18
08-28-2013, 03:37 PM
Well the last 2 days I have installed a 4 post lift in my extra 12x24 bay. This way I can store my 33 and still have room for boxes and ect. from the 818 kit. I am done with inventory. Lots back ordered! I was able to unload everything by myself with the help of a furniture dolley. Hope to start on the kit later this week. Grass needs mowing. Ugh!

Yea date is off for sure. It is a cheapo camera and I have to change the batteries often. I forget to change the date. I am debating using the stock harness or getting an ECU from Wayne. I'll make a decision soon enough.

You unloaded by yourself. That's my dream, as I have no idea how I'll do it. I plan on renting a 20' truck for the kit + AJW donor boxes, but I have no idea yet how I'll unload. lolll
Nice 4 post lift though!

08-29-2013, 02:08 PM
Nice life, but I think you have it backwards. Keep the 33 on the ground so you can drive it a lot, and put some boards across the lift to use as a storage shelf for the parts. :)
Your 33 is so gorgeous, can't wait to see the 818 finished.

I have coated my front alum. with Lizard skin sound deadner and ceramic heat shield. I'll be using that on most panels as well. I attached some of the panels with S/S 10-32 button head screws. Some with rivets. I painted all the bare metal with Eastwood Rust Encapsulater then Extreme chassis gloss black. I got as far as the lower and upper control arms. Only slight mods needed to fit. I ended up ordering the ECU and harness from verycoolparts. Wayne makes a good product, plus he is a great guy to talk to. Here is my reason for going this way. I can easly mod my program, easier plug and play, less wires to deal with, cleaner install and I don't need to hire a tuner for the reflash. In the long run well worth the price IMO. I hope to get more done this week. So far this is easier than the 33 kit IMO. But is just as much fun!
Check out my engine turned trans cover.

So you sprayed both coatings?
With a gun or in spray cans? If it comes in spray cans too...
They claim heat reduction by 30F+ and noise by 12dB+.
Now I wonder if the fatmat is better. Of course, they say 3x better than any leader. :) But no numbers. Maybe using both is also an option.
blueoval_bowtie_guy

I used fatmat on my Cobra. It is under all the carpet. Not sure how well it holds the heat out - foot boxes in Cobras get wicked hot even with Cobra Earl's powered vents. The first summer mine was on the road my wife and I had to wear ear plugs (no carpet and no fatmat). After the fatmat and carpet were installed, we've never worn ear plugs again.

I use a paint roller. First the sound proofing then the heat barrier. I bought the 2 gal. cans. I will be able to do 3 cars with that much. I also use Eastwood Thermo- Coustic sound deadner sheets on the inside and inside floor. I did this on a Vette and my 33 and had great results. It adds about 100lbs when you add every thing up . Very worthwhile IMO.

I am having issues with the front sway bar. The mount holes do not line up and the link rods are way too long. Maybe the FFR update I will get today will explain.

After getting my front wheel deal fixed I was able to jump around and get some other stuff done. Mounted the rad. and some rear suspension. I changed out my rear arm bushings for energy suspension units like my front LCA's. I sure hope some B/O stuff starts coming in. At least I have a car show Saturday with my 33 to keep me out of trouble. LOL.

Craig, I ended up using bigger dia. rubber bushings, didn't like the look of the tiny shifter bushings... Got them at ACE, 3/8 thick about 1.5 OD. I'm using tubular spacers under longer bolts at the top, they are getting powder coated

Jumping around I mounted my tank and modified the lower firewall. This added a lot of legroom for me. I mounted my kirkey seats temporarly and I needed that extra room IMO. I have to bend the upper firewall more to match the bottom now. I am adding Eastwood thermocousit to the floors and on the backside of the firewalls. I will also make a alum. firewall in the engine side as some others are doing. I am mounting them with 10-32 buttonhead screws and 1/4-20 buttonhead screws and nuts.

Here's some pictures of the firewall all mocked up after mods for the Boyd tank. I will most likely have to mod the hole for cables and wires. I have a photo that shows the room gain in inches. Always use a drill stop when working around a tank. I am using a combonation of 10-32 S/S screws and button head bolts.

I have Kirkey seats. I decieded to insulate the seat area and cover it with a 14ga. steel plate. They are held in place with 24 3/16" large flange S/S rivets. I painted it with eastwood wrinkle paint. I used the eastwood thermocoustic and 3/4" silver backed foam insulation. I can then mount my seats and drivers side slider easier IMO.

They will be held in with S/S 10-32 button head screw with rubber backed washers. I will also insulate between the alum. and the tank with foam and thermcoustic. For those who chose the Boyd tank you may need to modify the sender. It should read 90 ohms empty and 0 ohms full. Some are coming with the opposite readings. The fix is easy though. Pull the sensor and flip the entire plastic assembly to the other side and flip the float as well. This way it will read correctly. Make sure you mark the levels and float before moving, so you can get them in the correct place. I will email Dave Boyd about this just in case.

My CV axles fits my CV's pefectly. I made a firewall between the engine and fuel tank. I will make holes for fuel lines and cables as I go. I added a little old school Hot Rod to my build. Had a great surprize this morning. I got a call from Wayne as he was heading home from Sebring. He stopped by and showed me some tips on the parts I got from him as well as tips on the 818. Today I mounted my gas pedal and throttle cable. If you read the manual it says to drill a 1/4" hole in the front panel. You most likely won't be able to pass the cable end and ball cup through it. Open the hole just enough to pass the cup through and slot 2 fender washers to finish up the job using the slip nut. I mounted my pedal with out the FFR bracket. Much better for locating it IMO. Here is a photo of that and my insulation. I also mocked up my shifter and cables.

That is correct they are not for the FFR shifter. So far I am just mocking up stuff. I am not going to locate the shifter till I have the engine/trans in the chassis. You have to cut the FFR bracket and add the other one. The cables run to the rear of the shifter instead of the front like the kits. Shorter cables mean less slop. The shifter is a piece of artwork IMO. No shifter boot on this one for sure. I am still waiting on TGV deletes and spring hats for my shocks. Then I can start cooking along. Right now I am just trying to stay busy on mods.

Absolutley! It's even sexier than the shifter on a Spyker, or the exposed gate on an older Ferrari. (before they went all manumatic)
I look forward to seeing yours come together. My kit's due to roll out next weekend, so it'll be a while before I get to my shifter.
And those are some seriously nice cables that Wayne provided.

Brackets look good, you have to redrill the FFR bracket to allow the new cable to be in the center of its travel.

I have been working on wiring. I was able to get all the light circuits, horns, fans and E-Brk light to work, as well as the dash stuff. A few wires needed relocating and I am installing wire loom covers. I did a mod on the dash as I was cutting holes for my electric cutoff switch. I got rid of the screws and installed S/S screws, washers and locknuts. I think this will hold up better in the long run, JMO.

Well I have been somewhat busy on the 818 as of late. I installed my TGV deletes and buttoned up the engine. I mounted a oil pressure sender. You have to install a 45 degree fitting to clear the alt. I installed the engine, transmission, front and rear shocks, finished up the front and rear suspension and installed the front sway bar. I also installed my Invidia 3" turbo outlet. I will custom make my exhaust system. The FFR exhaust is too restrictive IMO. Here's some pics. I have a car show this weekend for my 33 so the 818 is taking a break from the action.

No. It's not the length that's an issue. It's interferes with the frame about 3/4 of the way down the turbo where it starts to bend.

Marsha was feeling so much better today. She gave me the go ahead to work on the 818 some. You gotta love that girl!! LOL. I finish up my coolant lines and filled it with coolant and pressure tested it. I made a bracket sorta like Dan's a week ago. Simple fix for the tank on the engine. What was FFR thinking when they made that bar so close??? I cheated and instead of unbolting the radiator I just lifted the front of the chassis to get rid of the air. I guess I was lazy. LOL. I hope to fire it up Tuesday or Wednesday.

You send Wayne the ends of the engine harness, cluster and steering column. He blends those with his own harness that looks similar to a Ron Davis type harness. His makes the whole thing so simple. No O2 sensors, no A/F meter just the basics for a good setup. Very simple relay boxes and fuse panels that are small and easy to mount. The system can have lots of add ons if you wish. Well worth the money IMO. I may end up building a N/A 818 down the road and try the stock harness. If you can afford it Wayne's setup is the way to go IMO.

The column, cluster, engine, alt. and ECU all plug right in. You must terminate all the rest like the kit does. He leaves plenty of wire so you can route it the way you want. I ended up simplifying some of the engine harness because his ECU does not use all the factory sensors and such. It made for a neater harness IMO.

I'll take a stab at answering this. Wayne most likely can do better. This TecS system is for performance first. Where the stock system is designed for emmisions. Just as a race car does not use a lot of pollution controls this one follows that kind of deal. You can add a O2 sensor to this system and I might very well do so after I get it on the street.

The O2 sensor and AF meter are used usually to reduce emissions, yes. But can also be used to target a specific AF ratio cuz for some reason you want your engine to run at these ratios given a number of variables (pressure, TPS, RPM, etc.). If you let the O2 sensor and its little computer do their work to hit the targets you want, you call that closed loop mode, opposed to open loop mode. Open loop does not use the fuel corrections the O2 sensor can apply. It just takes the fuel value you have given it. But sometimes that fuel value may not be perfect due to several reasons, closed loop sees that and adjusts the AF accordingly. But in order to do so, you need the O2 sensor so that it can detect what AF ratio you are running at.
I can better explain if anyone's interested.

I do understand the difference between closed loop and open loop modes, and it seems to me closed loop mode would be far superior (Perhaps that is wrong?). Knowing closed mode requires an O2 sensor and A/F meter, it would seem to me you would want them. Hence the reason for my question. Without them, it seems like the usefulness of fuel injection is limited.

I can supply a narrow band or wideband O2 sensor with the TEC systems. I like using narrow bands only in cruise conditions where the throttle positions and load don't change quickly. What ever they read has already happened so they are only estimaters of what the motor needs next. IF the engine stays in the same configuration/load, then the information from the O2 is relavent to what happens next. Now if the engine load changes quickly, then the sensor is working behind the curve of the actual fuel load. That being said, modern electronics are so fast they can adjust the fuel and spark between individual combustion events and even between cylinder firings on the same crank revolution. But they can be give bad information with exhaust leaks, cracked spark plugs, bad plug wires so I really only let them have a +/- 5% range to work in and only in a cruise mode. At full throttle you can burn up a motor being 5% off on mix if you are tuned for maximum power. At idle the O2 sensor can cause hunting of the idle speed by changing of the pulse width of the injector.

No mode is better. It depends what you aim for. For race, I don't see a reason to use closed loop, in fact it may be worse.
For street, closed loop may be better.
But that depends on so many factors! Stand alone ECUs is a complex world due to the fact you have to deal with all situations and you have to control all the data/sensors/etc. You mess something up and you're screwed. Some ECUs are easier to work with, I don't know about the TEC.
First of, you need to get the car on a dyno or tune it on the road and have your fuel map as perfect as possible. In open loop. Once that's done, closed loop can come to play and apply slight error corrections in those rare situations open loop would not hit the desired target. On some ECUs, closed loop is not controlled very good, on others it's better. You also may have to configure your sensor in the ECU's software, so you tell it how many samples per second to check for, you key in the PID factors and a LOT of other variables. You don't get that right, closed loop will barf on you. Anyway 98% of the time open loop is sufficient (IF properly tuned). And if fuel is no issue, you tune your map a little rich everywhere and the engine will never jerk.
Open loop usually is smoother cuz in closed loop there are always corrections applied so the AFR may fluctuate and if the sensor is slow to react in those situations when AFR changes are too quick, you get fuel increases when you need decreases and you get decreases when you need increases, cuz the sensor is constantly chasing its tail.
The key with stand alone ECUs is to get a perfect fuel map (well, timing as well but fuel is harder) in open loop. Once you get there, you can try closed loop and see how it behaves. If you are happy with open loop, don't spend the money on the sensor. If you want a better mpg, try CL and see if it helps.
I use closed loop cuz I realized I do have situations where open loop would act weird. It's possible I have some bad values somewhere in my map (temp, MAP, TPS, volt, who knows I built it alone from scratch!), but with closed loop I am able to smooth that out. CL helps me get a better AFR at idle, but that's my personal situation. Always try open loop first for a while.
I don't know how Wayne does his maps, but if you have an AFR meter, install it and monitor in various situations. If you are happy with the logs, don't bother with CL.
I'm sure there is a reason why Wayne doesn't use CL. But unless configured perfectly, CL is not necessarily better than OL. :)

Well there you go, Wayne just said it!
I must say I do not have that problem at idle, maybe I did set my CL right in that situation, I guess.

With the flurry of self learning systems on the market over the last 4 years, there has been a bit of a learning curve for the industry. Mostly about the limitations of these systems WHEN something isn't perfect. An exhaust leak, faulty spark plug, burned plug wire and the computer pulls out fuel because it thinks it rich from the mis fire. It pulls fuel and pulls until the motor is too lean until it barely runs. Now I do set systems in Closed Loop (CL) but only when I can have it off at idle, on in light cruise and off once it got above about 80% volumetric efficiency.

I followed Wayne's advice and ONLY allow my car to use the Narrow Band sensor (5%) at points off-idle up to about 4000 RPM and below WOT..the Electromotive allows you set several conditions for the O2's to come in....here is a video that I did a while back on my Cobra using the TEC-GT on a 408W, X303 cam with a 66mm turbo...I'd say the engine idles pretty darn good when not using the O2's...

I have been busy with other stuff lately. Today I finally got to work on the 818 some. I fixed my temp and fuel gauges. The 2 Blk/Wht wires out of C conn. from the cluster were not hooked to ground as they should be. Simple fix. I ran the engine and had some idle issues. I had some vacuum leaks and a stuck IACV. Still idles about 1250 need to look further into this deal. The fans come on at 90 degree C and off at 87. Engine has unreal throttle response. If it runs half as good as it sounds I am going to be a happy man! Waynes kit is the bomb!
I had to modify my alt. setup. I needed to remove it and could not get the long bolt out with my firewall. I ended up taping the mount and using 2 10-1.5 bolts. I am trying to make the wiring as neat as possible in the engine bay. Like a dope I cut the crank sensor wires to the TecS. Wayne came to my rescue. I realy felt like a dope. ( I came clean Wayne! Inside joke!) LOL. I guess God has a way of Making us humble now and then. Hope to work on the wiring some more this weekend. BBall and Football will eat up some time as well as wife's Doc visits. Did you clean it out with gasoline? I usually invert it and fill it with gas, let it soak and then qtip it. I always have 2 or 3 IAC gaskets on had because they are shot once you take them out.

Tom and I both put the Lokar handle in our cars and it's just the handle. Tom center mounted his handle on a plate he made and used the FFR suppled cable mount/rear tunnel aluminum. I set mine offset toward the passenger, built a low cable mount and did custom aluminum with the Lokar brake boot w/bezel.

I got it from Summit. I also ordered the boot for it. It is just a handel. I modified it using the stock cable holder and a 1/4-20 threaded rod from the handel to the cable holder. This way it is adjustable. Don't forget to adjust your rear brake shoes properly first.

I think you might be confusing his custom firewall on the inside of the engine bay with the FFR supplied firewall that is on the inside of the cabin. A few of us made firewalls to separate the fuel tank area from the engine area.

I cut a relief in the back side of the bend with a cutoff wheel and then bent it on a table with some clamps. Then I stitch welded it every 3" on the back side for strength.

Tom, if you haven't already, I would try to fit on your rear bonnets and make sure your quarters are were you want them. I am pretty sure the fenders go under, but I have not gotten the windshield frame in yet. The rear small bonnet will have a gap and you will notice it is a matter of pushing the rear section in. some tweaking will be needed, with the hood pins and or whatever you choose to do to keep that line, or go Erik's route. I am coming up with a brace setup along with some body triming and re-glassing to make the lines even. This is why Erik made his one piece.
The 5/8 that they recommend for front bottom of rocker is close to were they should sit but mike Everson and I had to space it out 3/4 for me and 1" for mike so get good lines on doors fenders and rear sections

Well I just had to try my rear parts on the car. The AMR intercooler has to be mounted further back and lower. I am going to mount it under the rear hatch mesh and add a electric fan to blow cool ducted air over it. Some brackets and hoses will do the job. If I had to do this over a N/A donor would have been used. This turbo engine could be trouble in the wrong hands IMO. I found a Hyundai spoiler in the bone yard for 25 bucks. It even had a third brake light. I think it looks good on the back. I am sure some will not like it, but WTH I am going for it. IMO it follows the rear lines well and looks cool. I think I will use black mesh to cover the gaps behind the seat to the rear hatch behind the rollbar.

Also, in regards to the intercooler, I had a similar idea. I'd love to see what you come up with. One thought I had, though, is that the existing rear hatch mesh is too far rearward.
