I like the wing. The shape works and the wiring will never be noticed if someone looks at the 818 from the left front! :D

I have been working on the body the last 2 days. The doors went on easy IMO. The front fenders, front nose and front hood don't line up worth a **** to my windshield no matter where I move it. I am having my body/ painter guy come over tomorrow to try to help me out with it. I can see how this kit is 10 K less than the rest. But such allowances must be made IMO. I think when it is done it will be a cool looking car and most defintely have superb performance.

I trimmed the ends of my windshield to allow the hood to sit flush. I had more trouble in the back.. Lol.. I will take picture when I get back to the house later this week.. I think I cut about 1/4 off the end of the windshield to get it lay in there. The windshield needs to go as far down and back as possible

To clarify, I assume you trimmed the metal frame, not the glass windshield itself?

At least you have somewhere to mount the doors...... The 818R has NO provisions for the doors.

Success!!! Chris my body/Paint guy came over and we pushed the windshield back as far as we could like Wayne had suggested. Now with some trimming and fab up 2 brackets for the back top of the fenders the hood fits good on top of the windshield frame. I have to trim the front of the doors as well. I post pics when I get all this done.

Wallace you're kicking butt. Love the spoiler. I saw one the other day in my work parking garage and I must have it. However its for the new Audi TT-RS and the only inexpensive version comes straight from China/Hong Kong and I think it's too much of a gamble. It is sweet though!

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/CARBON-FIBER-AUDI-2007-2013-TT-8J-TTS-RS-STYLE-REAR-WING-TRUNK-SPOILER-/00/s/NjAwWDgwMA==/z/QI8AAOxyQj9RRGKL/$T2eC16V,!zcE9s4g3MFHBRRGKL!sww~~60_35.JPG

I'm probably going to bribe a few guys to come out to the West to help with my body. It's amazing how much faster it goes when you have three warped heads working on body panels. Two will usually cancel each other out but that third guy in the rotation always seems to figure out how it fits. Last time it was myself, Stack, and Jeff Miller. For those interested, I live close to Disneyland and Legoland, AND the weather is usually great here in January! ;)

wallace18
12-12-2013, 04:56 PM
Well to get back to my Build thread I have about 95% of the body work done. I am happy with how it is progressing now. I do have to massage stuff to get the fit I want. But to me that is 1/2 the fun. Hopefully off to paint by Jan. 2nd.
I made rear fender braces at the top. It helped with the fit to the windshield IMO.

My turbo pipes and hoses came in from HPS. I was able to mock up my intercooler and will start on my intercooler fan shroud next. I will be using a electric fan to blow cold air over my intercooler.

12-15-2013, 08:57 PM
That looks good. I like it!
For your consideration....Whenever a gas (air for us) is compressed, It causes a rise in the temperature of the gas...Gee...that is why there is an intercooler after the turbo...
It would be better to have the fan suck the cold air through the intercooler.

Frankly, i have no idea what the temperature rise due to your fan will be...but in principle it is better to suck air through the IC

fred

Frank818
12-15-2013, 09:08 PM
but in principle it is better to suck air through the IC

Some mentioned, FFR maybe, that air was coming through the floor and up through the IC and that in fact the air exchange was not above the IC down through the IC but under the IC up through the IC.

wallace18
12-16-2013, 05:59 AM
I doubt there will be much compression or heat buildup from this fan, IMO. FFR had heat soak problems with the R at Watkins Glen. I doubt very much air would flow backwards through the intercooler IMO. Some sort of forward facing scoop like the WRX could work also. It is just a idea I came up with and will give it a try. I am not looking to get record HP or TQ ratings, just build a differant mouse trap so to speak. LOL.

After finishing up my intercooler shroud I ran the fan for 20 minutes. Less than one tenth of degree change top to bottom. So much for that deal. I also got my fenderwell aluminum done front and back. I am waiting on my inner door panels then it is off to get painted.

Have you tried reversing the fan so it blows air up and out? It would be nice to see if it makes a difference.

After finishing up my intercooler shroud I ran the fan for 20 minutes. Less than one tenth of degree change top to bottom.

What exactly does that mean? It was effective because heat didn't rise? It was a fail because there should have been a change? I don't understand... :(

What exactly does that mean? It was effective because heat didn't rise? It was a fail because there should have been a change? I don't understand... :(

The engine was not running. There is a group who felt that the fan would compress the air and heat it up. I am not going to reverse the flow because it would pull hot air from the turbo through the intercooler. That would not work well in my opinion.

wallace18
12-17-2013, 05:54 AM

I just found a fan on e-bay that fit my needs. I don't recall the manufacture. Sorry.

Xusia
12-17-2013, 11:51 AM
Ah, OK? Thanks for the explanation. I don't think it possible for a simple fan to actually compress air [enough for it to heat up], so performing a test for that completely escaped me!

I am done fooling around with the fiberglass. I took apart all the body parts and rubber undercoated the backside of all parts. I also used truck bedliner spray on all my wheel well alum. I finished all my wiring for all the lights and just have my fan and radio left to wire. It is 76 degrees here in Florida so I am going to lunch in my 33. Just part of the good fortune to live in Florida. LOL.

I have had some questions asked of me on the shifter brackets. Here is an answer I hope that helps. You cut the FFR bracket off at the end of the trans. The VCP shifter has the arm mounted up instead of down. You most likely will have to elongate the holes for the bolts to the trans on the side. Then install the VCP bracket for the other cable. I ran the cables under the intake to the shifter. Mount the cables to the trans first then locate your shifter. This worked well for me. Here is some photos. I hope this helps those who had questions.

I got my Cf and door panels on the 26th. I mounted the CF. And I sprayed the underside of the diffuser with black truck bedliner. Overall I am glad I got the CF stuff. I made some simple mounts for the rear of the front splitter. I used rivnuts and 10-32 screws to the frame every where I could for the CF. I am not that happy with the Door panels. I am going to modify them to meet my needs. I'll post later what I am doing with those.

I removed all the body to clean up my undercoat overspray. I found out my doors would drag on the bottom even when I had the door gaps right on the outside closed. The inside of my doors sagged down and would scrap the inside of the side pod. I made a quick fix with a angled piece of alum srcap. Maybe this will help others. I also mounted my Hollywood mirrors. I did not care for the Subie donor ones. Here is some pics. I'll post the door deal in the body thread as well.

Erik W. Treves
01-01-2014, 05:02 PM

Noise reducers inside the pipe?

What do you think a muffler is? Race cars now have to meet decibel limits in some areas. Companys make decibel reducing inserts for this reason.

C.Plavan

I used "Hushpower" mufflers on my race car when I needed to make sound requirements- (Laguna Seca) Still zaps some power, but much quieter.

Took the 818 to the paint shop today. Settled on a burnt orange as the color. A few shades darker than Wayne's car. I like how it looked with the gold wheels. The front is an easy fix my body guy said. Thank goodness for that. I am covering the door panels in black vinyl and have carbon fiber look inserts. Pictures to come later. I hope to have the car done for the NOPI nationals in Orlando in March.

While my body work is being painted I went to Very Cool parts in Alabama to have Wayne Presley do a dyno tune on my 818. I had some stuff I wanted sorted out better. Wayne was great. I had a brain fart and the strap on the back of my 818 came loose on the trip. I had to jump on the brakes for a guy who pulled out in front of me. The 818 punched a hole in the front of my enclosed trailer. Sounds worse than it is luckily for me. After fixing plug and crank sensor gaps Wayne got serious on the tune. I ended up with About 250HP and 240ft/lb torque at the rear wheels. I am happy with the results. This was at 14psi. The engine sounds great and throttle response is good. Thanks again to Wayne for such a good setup. We had a great lunch at a local hangout and I got to see his 818 up close. It is a work of art. Paint in the sun is awesome. I highly recommend VCP to anyone who needs stuff for their 818. Great people to deal with. BTW it was cold!!!!!
Here is what is added to the stock 2002 longblock. HTA68 turbo, AMR intercooler, 750cc injectors, grimmspeed TGV deletes and boost controller, Invidia 3" catless downpipe, Tomei 4-1 S/S headers without cat, Boyd fuel tank with Aeromotive fuel pump, TecS engine controller.

Tom, did you have to do a bunch of work to clean up the top edges of the rear fenders where the engine cover and trunk lid meet the fenders? Mine are all "gobbed up" with uneven gel coat. There was a fair amount of work done to those panels as well as the side pods . Every panel with the exception of the doors needed work. IMO this is not a no paint kit. But to each his own. I like a good paint job. If I end up doing some customer cars I will suggest wrap. Though a lot of the imperfections will show. But it is a 10K kit, For the money it is good IMO.

Yes, I separated the dash halfs and did as you say on the top. I did not wrap it around the lower part.

I think it's important to remember not to cover the dash top with anything that has a varied pattern that catches light as it will just reflect in the windshield. On this car the windshield may be angled enough so it doesn't affect your view. Not sure. I'm anxious to find out. I'll be doing mine with basic black leather or similar and something else for the front of the dash.

I got my 818 back from the glass shop. It took a lot of sealer in the lower bottom corners. But I like how it came out. I mounted my rear view mirror and finished up my carpet and dash stuff. Now all I am waiting is for the paintwork to be done. Maybe next 10 days or so. Also I used a small piece of headliner material to cover the gap at the steering column. Very easy to install and looks good to me. IMO.

Well my paint guy, Chris talked me into painting my wheels and changing my calipers to black. I was hesitant to go away from my gold wheels and red calipers. But he is much better at the color stuff than me so I gave in. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!
He put down 14 coats of paint on the wheels alone. The first picture is the wheels as I bought them in gold. The next 2 are the wheel painted. Depending on the suns angle they can look orange, black or a root beer color. Lots of flake and candy in the paint. My photos really don't do them justice. He is laying down the final paint on the body parts tonight. Wait till you see that!! I hope to be putting it back together on Monday or Tuesday. Here is pics.

Fantastic color! Something about this car makes orange tones work so well on it.

Looks like the strakes are there, yes?

Personally, I'm really digging the exposed fastener look. The R-car doesn't use fasteners on the rear vents, I think they just used either silicone or epoxy - and it's been driven hard at speed (including some off-track agricultural excursions).

Here it is almost done. Still have a few odds and ends to finish up. By the way Wayne this thing runs so good after your dyno tune. Thanks again VCP. The car after primer was painted black on the humps and center of front hood. the rest of the car was then painted white. Then several layers of gold flake then tangerine candy, more small flake the clear. Then wet sanded and buffed out. It is awesome in the sun. The humps and hood change color depending on the sun or shade. Thanks again to Huegenics for their paintwork and FFR for the great kit. Also all of you on the forum for your kind words and help. I hope I was a help to some as well.

I really like the wing and the side mirrors!

In your last pic it looks like you notched the inside top of the door panel around the dash. I haven't yet put those top two screws in mine that locks that in place yet, as my door cards haven't arrived yet (tracking shows today though) and I want to see how that area all comes together first. I was planning on pushing the top of the door panels outwards to align the body line of the door with the body line of the fender, the manual does not provide any specifics. This requires further trimming of the return lip of the fenders. Can you provide me some guidance?

Love your rear end . . . er, did I just say that? I like the cut-outs and the FFR and 818 emblems. It's nice to see how the door panel fits. The square front inside corner looks strange, eh? Very nice work.

I was not happy with my drivers door panel still. I decided to move my aluminum trim under the top of the door. I still wanted it on the inside to match the other trim in the interior. I think it looks better now. The S/S fasteners match the rest of the outside of the body now for a cleaner look, IMO. If I had to do it again I would come up with something different for sure. Also check your rear wheel liner and make sure it clears your brake line on suspension travel. I had to clearance mine. Pics to follow.

No I do not have a picture right now. I took the metal tube from FFR and cut it in 2. Then cut the rubber hose to connect everything. You have to slant cut the rubber hose at the body so it fits nice. Next time I have the body off I'll take some photos.

Well I have been neglecting my 818 lately. I finally got off my duff and had it weighed. It came to 2060 with a full tank of gas in it, I am happy with that considering the radio, carpet and sound and heat material I added to the kit. Next is send off paper work to get title. This car will be for sale once the top shows up and is installed. I have to make room for my coupe build and some customer builds I have coming up. The car will be sold for 25 K firm . This is with the top and all the goodies I installed.

I have my reasons for the sale. It is a fun car but just not for me. I built the car mostly for the experience of the build and to build a resume of FFR kits so I can do customer cars in the future. I hope you will respect my prices and wish to sell. I have always gave everyone else my respect all I ask for is the same. The kit car market is very weak right now. I have done my research. I hope you will respect my prices and wish to sell. I have always gave everyone else my respect all I ask for is the same. The kit car market is very weak right now. I have done my research. I price my stuff at my bottom line and do not dicker with anyone. If I don't get 25K it will not be sold.

Tom, your right it's your car and your price to make, I did not mean to step on toes. I just like your car and think it could fetch what Erik's sold for. You built a nice ride for sure and should have no problem selling it.

Buy toms car for $25k ,keep the top, resell car on eBay for 25k. Free top!

An interesting approach, for sure... I'm not quite ready to do a car purchase in Florida to get a free top for a car in Maine tho!

Well,

My son Zach and I just got back from seeing Tom's 818...PICTURES DO NOT DO THIS CAR JUSTICE!!!!! I am here to tell you it is BEAUTIFUL in the sun! The paint just pops!! The attention-to-detail and the craftmanship by Tom is incredible! As a military aviator, it pleases me to see that kind of commitment. Whomever buys this beauty will be getting MORE THAN their money's worth.

So, as Tom dropped-the-hammer on his 818, I was thrown back into the Kirkeys... When the turbo kicked in, it was like hitting afterburner in a jet! Totally *****in'!! I have run Spec Miatas and I am here to tell you that this car will STOMP on those ones...

Tom, thanks to you and Marsha for your hospitality! I will be calling you once I get my kit!

TC

P.S. when I asked my son if we should just buy Tom's car, he said,"..no, we need to build our own!".

My soft top is suppose to be here tomorrow. I will post pics and document the install. I hope to get my car titled this week also. Look for it on the For sale section soon. This has been an awesome build and fun to interact with so many great folks in the forum. I am going to go get my Daytona Coupe in June from FFR and visit family in the NE. I just want to thank all that have helped me during the 818 build and FFR for such a great kit. This car is truly an E-ticket ride for sure. Special thanks to VCP and Wayne Presley for all his help and parts that made this such a great build. My hope is after my coupe that I will build kits for customers. I feel I have a certain skill set that can lend a hand to some who want a Factory Five but do not have the time, space or skills needed to build one. This is what I hope to do in the future. I will leave it in Gods hands if that comes to fruition or not. Thanks again to all. God Bless. TW.

Ok I got my top today from Fed Ex about 8:30 A.M. It was packaged very nice. I am going to tell you how I installed mine and my thoughts on the top and directions. I read the Rod Tops manual cover to cover 2 times. It leaves a lot to be desired IMO. Not very thorough at all. I also watched the FFR video on the top 2 times as well. Since they used a car that had the top already installed it leaves a lot of questions also. Between the 2 I got it done fairly easy. It took me and my wife about 2.5 hours for the top and 1 hour for the side curtains. It really helps to have an assistant. Since my assistant was good looking as well it made it all the more enjoyable. You can tape all the areas where the top will mount with painters tape first. Then follow the instructions for the most part. I used an 1/8" and 3/8" drill bits and riveted the parts on instead of drilling and taping the 8-32 screws. My windshield was fiberglass where the front part went on. No way drilling and taping into that will work. Maybe later windshields are different. Mount the center clamp first for sure then the side ones for the windshield part of the top. Remember measure and check twice before drilling. The rest just followed the instructions for the most part. The side curtains I riveted the Velcro circle instead of gluing them. The adhesive is junk and does not last 15 seconds IMO. I think it looks great on my car. I like how you can see out of it so well from the inside when it is installed. Very little flapping around at 70mph. It takes 2 people about 10 minutes to install after the first time. It is not a Miata MX-5 top. So do not think it is that kind of top, With the rear window zipped out it has good airflow thru it. It will keep you from getting wet but not dry in the rain. I do not recommend it for very rainy days. Overall I am pleased with it, several of my neighbors think it looks better with the top than without. I like it both ways. Is it worth the price? To me yes, but not everyone may think so. I do not think it will store easy in the car IMO. I will either leave the house with it on or off. There is no room in my car for it to store anyway. Since I am among the first customer to install it I hope all this helps future builders. Here are some photos.

Please take note that I was done with most of my 818 before the measurements for the windshield and rear pin locations came out from FFR. Mine are a little off in all areas. Still the top fit easy and IMO looks good. It could be tighter in some places but I attribute that to my measurements being off. That is the price I paid for being and early builder and doing it so quickly. It sure keeps the sun off of us and makes riding in the direct sun more enjoyable for sure. I can tell you that the hardtop and P/W I installed on my 33 was better weather protection but still was not weather tight like a production car. These are kit cars after all. Keep that in mind. These are for pure enjoyment. Not to be confused with a production car that cost lots more and has millions of dollars in R&D put into it. IMO it is a nice addition to my 818 and if I ever build another I would put the top on again.

Had a nice afternoon with Joe Greeves. He is a freelance photographer and journalist. He did an article and photo shoot of my car today. Hopefully it will appear in Complete Kit Car magazine from London, England as well as Kit Car Builder digital magazine here in the states. Over 1000 photos were taken. I learned a ton from Joe about how to take good car photos so they get published. He also rode in the back of my pickup with my wife Marsha driving. He got some cool action shots from the bed of the truck. I gave him a ride and he was very impressed with the acceleration of the car. I mention all of the forum members who helped as well as VCP and Wayne Presley. Also my painter from Huegenics. And of course FFR. Thanks to all the car is really a part of all of us on the forum. I could not have finished so nice without all of your help.

Took the 818 out to the local cruise in last night. Answered about 100 what is it questions. Car is very tight with windows zipped in. I was surprised. Marsha brought her BRZ for the chairs and dog. LOL. First time I drove the 818s like a normal person on the road. Truly an aural experience and the car just reacts to your thoughts almost as far as steering, braking and accel. While it is a stiff ride the ability to maneuver at will is so much fun. Feedback as far as steering and seat is truly remarkable. I can imagine in the right hands this car would embarrass a lot of high end sports cars.

Looks like fun! So have you come up with a simple answer to "what is it?". Otherwise it's long day explaining that it's a kit car, that's not really a kit car.

I had no problem getting into/out of the FFR's red 818 (with the soft top on) at the Huntington Beach Cruise in (although I'm 5"11", 185lbs, in decent shape and flexible). I noticed a lot of people trying it out, and a few had issues, but no-one got stuck! If you're well over 6". have a big belly and/or bad knees/back, it could be problematic, but otherwise, not as bad as expected. Look on YouTube for videos of people getting into an Lotus Elise... pretty similar.

Wallace18, Hello I am coming to the party a little late but am very interested in how you mounted your after market inter cooler in the car. Like you I have a after market

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Grayghost

It has been talked about for some time. It is smaller behind the driver giving more legroom. Not sure of its release date.

Here is some photos to prove a tall guy fits in my 818S. My friend Richard is 6'5" tall with a 36" inseam. He was wearing cowboy boots. He had plenty of leg, foot and headroom even with the top on. He was able to drive the car and operate all the pedals and shifting fine. Here are some photos to prove it. Note that I did not use the FFR tank. And yes the car is still for sale for 25K firm.

I am referring to this http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?14484-RoRi-s-Custom-Parts-Steering-Column-Spacers

Collapsing the steering column. You did not need to do it and a 6'5" guy fits.

RM1SepEx
07-09-2014, 10:09 AM
Flat wheel, minimum column spacer (thin quick dis-connect perhaps) the key is his aftermarket seat being low, way back, and angled... notice how bent his legs are. It all comes down to seating position and geometry.

EricScottZehnder
07-10-2014, 11:38 AM
Fits, but I'm 6'4" with a 34" inseam and I know what it feels like to drive a car when the angle of your legs looks like that. Heel-toe is impossible and the whole experience is poor. Granted, I'm sure that the average person looking to buy this car from you will be less than 6' tall and everything will work out great for them.

RM1SepEx

Ergonomics... problem is everyone is built different and also feels comfortable in a different position. All depends on the person... what is comfortable position for you might be unbearable for me...

Eric, Dan is correct that we are all different and one great thing about FFR cars is each of us can build it to fit . . . if you want. In the much bigger world of FFR roadsters the same question is posed and many taller guys (6'7"+) have made it work. In my roadster I mounted Kirkey seats, moved the steering wheel and pedals. In my 818 I've moved the steering wheel and cut down the Subaru seats. After more time I may get other seats but the 818 is easier to get into/out of because the door is hinged much more forward compared to the roadster. I'm 6"3", 32" inseam, 235 lbs. If you want to make it work, you can.

There have been some questions about my pics of the soft top. I took the first ones right after I mounted it. Don't forget I was the first customer install of the top. I since have adjusted the rear straps for a much tighter look. The top seals near the front of the humps. The sides are a styling element IMO. Here is current pics.

Well it looks like I sold my 818. 2 really good guys near FFR bought the car. The good news for me is I get to build an 818 for one of them as well. I am leaving for MA on Tuesday the 29th to deliver the car and pick up the 818S kit to bring home with the donor parts. I'll start his build thread next week. Here are some closing shots of the car getting loaded to head to its new home, I am happy and sad at the same time. It is such a beautiful car and is so fast. But it has been my dream to do customer builds and now I get to fulfill that wish. I hope my build was helpful to some of you as some of you have been helpful to me. My type 65 is going on the back burner for a time till I build this 818. We should all have such problems. LOL.
