Thanks Boz. I'm going to play around with the doors a bit and see if I can get it to line up a bit better. Did you have to elongate the holes in the "U" shaped bracket inside the door in order to have more adjustment?

I only had to grind some on the left door bracket where striker bolt attaches. I added stainless washers for more support. Guess I got lucky on the right door, no grinding. I'll make some aluminum covers for the fiberglass at the striker bolts at some point.

Thanks again for the info. I started on the hinge slots on the passenger side yesterday. I am going to try and finish it up tomorrow. Wish me luck.

It was a very productive day today. I moved on to the passenger side door and left the drivers side to marinate a bit. The passenger side went very well. After fiddling with the drivers side door, it gave me a better understanding of how to approach the passenger side. I was able to trim the door while it was mounted so it made it much easier. I only wish I would have sprayed the LizardSkin before I started the process.
I wired the taillights yesterday and picked up my hitch and bumper/license plate mount from the powder coater and it fit pretty well. Next I'm on to the waterfall so I can locate my new Breeze seat mounts. The Breeze mounts will solve a dilemma for me. They tilt backward about 1 1/2" or so, so my torso will be further from the steering wheel and I will have a slight bend in my knee when the clutch is depressed. After that I will mount the windshield and get an alignment. Hopefully I can start the registration process once all of that is complete.

Thank you very much. The weather has been incredibly warm for this time a year, hence the wildfire problems. Thats also the reason I decided to forego the power windows. Sinister or stealthy is exactly what I am looking for. Do you have a build page yet?

Unfortunately most of my photos from Photobucket got deleted because they want me to pay $ for more bandwidth. If there are any specific photos you would like to see from now on I can email them to you or I will use my photo album here. I got my harnesses in and my seats mounted using Breeze seat mounts and they are very nice. The seats are much more comfortable now. I am starting the registration process next week so wish me luck. Here are a few updated photos.

Anyone have an idea if this bracket is custom or something that can be purchased. I'm not interested in the extension piece to mount the secondary mirror. I have Raydot mirrors and thought the bent bracket would work well on my '33. I have the one from ********** and suppose I can bend that one in a similar fashion.

I started the fun registration process and my local DMV didn't disappoint. They told me I had to bring the vehicle to them before they refer me to the CHP. They were sure to get my $$. While I was sitting waiting for them to get me my Certificate of Sequence #, one of the employees made an announcement that their computers shut down Statewide....awesome. So, I brought the car down the next day and finished the paperwork. I have a CHP appointment for Monday so I'm sure things will be a bit easier, if not you may see me on the evening news leading the CHP on a high speed pursuit. :p
On another note, I decided to fuel it up because I was probably going to drive the vehicle to some of the next inspections. I fueled it while it was on the trailer and it started puking fuel out the filler from the get go. I took the car to have an alignment done on the front end and noticed fuel leaking at a pretty decent rate from the top of the sender. I attempted numerous times, with fuel all over my garage floor, to try to get the "O" ring style gasket to seat with no luck. Hindsight being 20/20, I wish I would have just opted for the Boyd tank. Why the fill port and the sender are mid-level on the tank Im not sure. It seems to me this is always going to be a potential leak point, but I decided to give the redesigned tank a whirl. Oh well.

01-31-2014, 11:24 AM
Yeah, you need to swap that stupid square gasket for something real and then take a mallet and screw driver to tighten it down. The worst design ever. I never had any problems because I over did it and I had to replace the sender once and still managed to get it to seal. Never fill the tank the first time! :)

Hey Evan, your car is looking great! Sorry to hear about your tank issues. I heard many complaints about them and just ordered the Boyd and be done with it. I am curious when you went to the DMV, why did they need to see your car at the point? I have heard you can start the process of CHP and light/brake inspections with out taking the car to DMV. I also heard every DMV office seems to do things their own way. I am assuming you are doing SB100 and if so, what number did you get? I am hoping to get to that point quickly and want to make sure I do before they reach the 500 per year limit.

Thanks Ray. The DMV is so "consistently inconsistent". They told me they have to verify that the car is what I say it is, "a kit". I tried not to show my frustration but they insisted and said they are going by what is in the system. She said that they do the verification and then they refer me to the CHP. Also be aware, I pulled the car on the trailer into the verification lane and the woman came out to inspect the vehicle. She told me she wasn't allowed to climb on the trailer to check the chassis # behind the pedals. I told her I would take a picture of it. She had to check with her supervisor and after about 10 minutes she said that would be fine. The CA DMV is the most disorganized agency in the State.
I got # 71, so I think you will be okay. The CHP officer said they didn't even go through all the numbers last year.

I think I need to abandon the vent in the rear differential cover. I put a longer 1/8 pipe extension with the vent in the end and I'm still getting oil making its way out when I drive the car. I had to remove the vent because the banana bracket was in the way. Hindsight, I wish I would have drilled and tapped it on the other side prior to replacing the rear differential cover and filling it with oil. Anyone have a trick way of drilling and tapping it with out getting a bunch of metal chips in the axle housing, I'm being lazy and don't want to have to remove the cover "again"?
I'm supposed to drive it down to the CHP office for the inspection tomorrow and don't want an annoying leak. Anyone know if its possible just to plug the hole if I take surface streets or will I build up too much pressure and blow an axle seal?

It won't be pretty but the most reliable way to vent the axle and housing is to attach a barbed fitting and extend a piece of rubber tubing to it about a foot and a half above the housing. You want enough slack in the line so that when clamped to the frame above the housing, the hose will extend and retract enough without pulling loose and dragging on the ground. This is the way the OEM's did it and before the filter screen plugs they sell now were around.

I have seen that done a bunch of times but do you think I can get away with the port where it is and just change it to a barb and hose like you are saying? That would be a hell of a lot easier than drilling and tapping a new vent on the drivers side axle. Here is a pic of how tall it is now and it still works its way up and out.

Step 2 of the registration process is complete. I visited the CHP today and it was a very pleasurable experience. The officer was very knowledgeable and was easy to work with. I think I inhaled about a pound of fiberglass from those stupid supplied mufflers and exhaust while driving it over there...not smart. My ears were ringing by the time I got there, so one of the first items on the to do list is run the exhaust out through the body and insulate the **** out of the interior. It was fun to drive though, a VERY stiff ride. On to the BAR and Brake and Light inspections.

Perhaps a neat way would be to run the venting hose to a barbed fitting tapped into an appropriate chassis frame cross member ??

Lemme know how it goes with Brake and Light. They can vary in their responses (I almost went to blows with my first guy then went across the street where it was passed). Also I was hearing some issues with no fenders and wipers with some CHP so it sounds like you dodged that which is good. Also what tire pressure are you running? Set them at 22lbs for sure. We all worked on springs as well and changed those out depending on comfort level. Also, yes, you need to get those pipes going sideways or out the back otherwise you're just trapping sound and heat under the car.

Thanks Erik, I will. I'm not sure if they will have an issue with no back up light or the fact that I haven't wired the license plate light yet, hopefully not. I haven't ran the exhaust out the side yet because I want to run a different tailpipe than the one the kit comes with. I prefer a more squared off shape or rectangular, just haven't found the right one yet. I may end up fabricating my own.
As far as the springs, I don't mind a stiff ride but our crappy roads and freeways in so cal are going to be a problem. The car does get a bit dodgy when its bouncing all over the place and I didn't even get on the freeway. I will definitely consider QA1's in the future, I just want to get the car a bit more complete before I do that. I have some fuel tank issues to attend to.

Evan, I have a question. The OEM axle ('89 foxbody) I installed has a vent on the passenger side. I assume that has been the design standard forever. Can you explain what is different in your application that is causing you to have leaks? Makin' me nervous...
BTW, I have my wheels and R888's mounted. I love the look of those tires. Wheels are pretty cool to. Blingy chrome
esff32
03-04-2014, 05:37 PM
I had to remove the vent in the axle because it was in the way of the 3 link bracket. My thought was to put that current setup in but the diff fluid kept working its way up the tube. I really didn't want to drill and tap it on the drivers side due to the fact that I would have to remove the axles as to not get metal chips in there. Now I am going put a barb fitting in there and run a hose up to the frame with some slack in it. All of the OEM applications use this method, similar to what all my muscle cars had.
Can't wait to see the wheels, the R888's do have a nice look and they handle really well.

I'm surprised because my 3-link bracket did not interfere. It is a close fit but the little floating cap is free to move and does not touch the bracket.

The location of the vent in Ford axels is NOT consistent. My roadster build I had to plug and relocate the vent, on the coupe and HR they fit fine.

Evan, couple of things. First the guy I gave you the number for will not ask you for a back up light on a 33. In fact, he asked me if a 65 Cobra had one from the factory. I simply told him no. Second, springs. If you are running FFR springs do yourself a favor and throw them away. They are very inconsistent in their spring rate and are far more stiff then their name brand counter parts. I switch out my FFR springs for Eibach. I did drop the rates down on my car 75 lbs on the front corners and 100 lbs on the rear corners. With the sway bar on the front and the 5-Link in the rear it is very well sorted now.

Thanks Frank, the guy I spoke with on the phone said it wouldn't pass the inspection without it. I simply butt connected the led plate lights on temporarily. I will definitely swap the springs at a later date. I have both the BAR and brake and light scheduled for the morning of the 10th.

First post. Give me some slack. But I see you have been hidin' in the dark for a minute. I have read your 33 build quite often . Love the setup and finish. Straight to the point. No B.S. sure you will hear from me, But I do see you are toying with the 818. I will follow that also. Again, first post. Should have introduced myself. Been around awhile. Reading, watching, learning. Is what this site is about right? All have been as I say good teachers in this field. informational and professional. Lot of good builders here. Talented craftsmen. Cheers!!!!!

The registration process is taking longer than I thought. I failed the BAR inspection due to the lack of a type IV pcv breather and hose connected to my air filter. The examiner would not let me leave and return with it fixed in the two hour allotted time. So I will be making another appointment. The brake and light on the other hand went smoothly and it passed with no problems. Just a note, the guy who performed the inspection however stated that he doesn't believe the headlights are DOT approved due to the fact they don't have the alignment "nipples" molded into the lens to align them. We eye balled them and he didn't make a big deal about it.
In the meantime, before I go to the follow up inspection with the referee and head to the DMV for the final time, I thought I would make some more progress on the car. I installed the fuel tank which was not difficult but just a pain. I had to remove the doors and pull the body bolts in the rear and along the rocker channel in order to jack the body up to gain access to the top tank bolts.
I have a long punch list before the Huntington Beach show. The previous drive to the CHP was miserable. I was covered in fiberglass from the mufflers and my ears were ringing for about an hour after I arrived. So the plan is to fully insulated the rest of the car and run the exhaust out from under the car...among a myriad of other things before the show. I still need to have another roll bar bent so I can install those before moving on to the waterfall. Anyway, lots more to do.

I decided to get a few other items on my list done before I go to my follow up visit to the BAR referee. I fit the under nose piece which wasn't easy to align. It probably would have been a bit easier to slice it into two pieces like others have but, I made it work. I'm not going to use the hood hinges as I am going to use a similar design as Erik Hansen.
Not sure if some of you got the package containing the correct brake hose from FFR but I did. I took a look inside the access panel and noticed that the hose they originally supplied was in fact the wrong type. It was weeping brake fluid everywhere. Glad someone brought this to their attention, however what a pain in my a**. I did not want to pull the body off to make the necessary repairs so needless to say it wasn't easy getting them changed out. I need to rebleed the brakes anyway so it was best to replace it before.

Looks good Evan!! I got the replacement hose also, mine wasn't leaking but since I have the body off right now it will be easy to change. My nose piece was not joined very well in the center, it was mismatched so after doing the bodywork I added several pieces of glass cloth for reinforcement.

Evan,
I have a question on the wiring; do you think I have enough room between the body & frame to run my rear section wiring harness (1/2 in. wrapped) down the drivers side to the rear. I will probably attach it to the outside of the space frame about 3 in. from the bottom. I don't know what the clearance is since I haven't had the body on yet.
thanks,

You have plenty of room Nevin, not a problem running it there. Just keep it below the flat part of the rocker where you bolt the body to the chassis.

I haven't installed them yet Nick, but that is the plan. The flat part at the top of the radiator grill would be a good spot to bolt a bracket to install the Quik-Latch. I think it will look okay, they are very small and low profile. I will post some pics after the installation.

I went to their site and I see how the mounting buckets may be useful in keeping things flush. You got me thinking and yes please take pics.
With some glass effort it is possible to make a recess in the hood to keep them flush. Once painted they'd be near invisible.

That sure looks a lot easier than the FF method. I spent a couple hours this morning realigning mine and it's already been on before. Things seem to shift slight after removing the body and paint. It just rests on the lip which is not very secure especially outside with any wind. It's times like this I wish I had a mill. I'd just machine something from a block of aluminum. Still may try that with the drill press. Plus I could really use a rubber bumper dead center for alignment. I have two rubber bumpers mounted in just about the same place as yours but my hood dips ever so slightly in the center.

The Magnaflow I found that was the best for my goals was the MF11255 It's still going to be loud enough for a good sound based on having the same size MF behind my 408 stroker in the Dakota R/T. I added resonators behind that one on the truck but I will wait and see on the 33 how the hemi stroker sounds since there is minimal room for reso's with my rear fuel tank.
It was the biggest that will fit in the 33 chassis in the factory location and had the best offsets for inlet and outlet
to minimize changes to the exhaust path. It also had the right size I/O for my combo.

Thanks For the info Dale. That is the second time I have seen someone switch to that particular part #. I may give it a go, anything has got to sound better than what I have. I am also tired of choking on fiberglass dust in the air, dont think my lungs can take any more abuse.

Had a minor setback today. I am trying to get the last few items taken care of before the show and I was on my way back from the muffler shop and I thought I spun a bearing or??? The car started running extremely rough and the car sounded terrible. My mind went to a terrible place and I expected the worst. When I got home I pulled the valve covers and noticed that one of the rocker arms on the #6 cylinder spun off of the pushrod. Hopefully it didn't cause any permanent damage, at this point it doesn't appear to be the case. I'm glad it happened while I was close to home and not on the way to Huntington Beach on Saturday.

You are correct Boz, I pulled the valve covers after I bought the motor and before I fired it up and noticed two rockers were turned. Well, tragedy averted. I was lucky enough that the rocker arm didnt get damaged and neither did the valve. A buddy of mine came over and we adjusted the valves again. We found that some of the poly-locks weren't as tight as they probably should have been. During the day, I decided that a new exhaust wasn't in the cards right now so I used the FFR supplied side exit pipes and used them to make some muffler turndowns. So after adjusting the valves, I took the car for a spin and what a difference. The sound was deadened enough to take the droan noise away and the tighter valve train seemed to work well. Huntington Beach....Here I come.

Well, the FFR show in Huntington Beach was a blast. The car ran amazing. It stayed cool all the way down and back and everything on the car felt great. Nothing beats 80 mph in the fast lane in fifth gear and 2000 rpm, the car just hummed down the road. Now on to the next items on the list.

Got the trunk lid fitted today but the latch still needs to go in. I also started fitting the hardtop. The trunk sheet metal has to wait until I get the roll bars welded in. The Boyd tank has to come out to check the sending unit. The gauge isn't reading accurate and I have reprogrammed the ohm setting about ten times. The sending unit might be getting hung up inside the tank. I banged on the outside of the tank and it moved up a bit but it is reading about 3/4 when its full. Hopefully its a simple fix.

Are you using the FF fuel sending unit? Or does the Boyd tank use a different sender? Looks like your top sits high in the center (rear) like mine did. Are you planning on reinforcing the trunk floor?
Looked at the HB pics, didn't realize you were driving at freeway speeds with no trunk. If she felt good that way I bet she's gonna be really great with all the panels.
esff32

The Boyd tank uses a different sending unit, one that drops in the top of the tank. It does sit high Boz. Do you think its necessary to add material to the bottom side of the top? If I use the draw hasp latches I bought like Erik it should pull the body up a bit to meet the top. Some of that gap will be taken up with the weather strip. My only concern would be the trunk lid alignment.
Boz1911
05-09-2014, 07:56 PM
I guess there's a zillion ways to do these cars, which is why each one is so different. I secured the body to the upper frame mount in the trunk so moving the body up with latches really wouldn't work for me. I ended up adding several strips of progressively wider glass strips to the bottom of the top. To be honest the amount I added was sort of a guess but it turned out darn near perfect. I did all my top fitting without the weatherstrip. My thought was that if it fit well without the weatherstrip it would fit better with it and in my experience that was the case.

Makes sense Boz. The top fits good on the passenger side but high in the middle and toward the drivers side. I do need to do some grinding but I will have to reasses it after I do so.

I am wondering if you ever resolved the problem with the fuel tank reading. I have the same problem reading about 3/4 when full.

07-29-2014, 07:27 AM
You know Brett, I haven't. I took a break from working on the car. I am getting ready to weld in a dual hoop roll bar setup and will pull the tank then. I spoke with Boyd welding regarding the issue and was told more than likely the sending unit is hanging up inside the tank somewhere. If I find out for sure, I will be sure to let you know and please if you come across something let me know.

Will do. Part of the problem is that i am not filling the tank completely because if i do, i have gas sloshing around in the filler (rubber) hose which i worry about gas spilling in my trunk. Even so it should be reading 90% instead of 75.

I had the same problem of gas leaking from the cap. I tightened the nut on the underside of the cap and got the o ring to seat better.

Hahaha....that is too funny Jeff. The car has been in its current state for the better part of a year. I have been driving it and working out the mechanical bugs. I decided that I better get my butt in gear and finish it. I had a couple roll bar hoops bent up and am getting ready to weld those in. I also purchased the paint. I am going with PlastiDip and the color will be Stormcloud Gray. I would like to get it finished before the next Huntington Beach show but don't think it will happen due to my schedule. Thanks for your interest...I would like there to be a finish too. I will post pics as soon as I make some more progress.

Thanks Motor Freak...I am going to get back on the build shortly. I just had some parts machined by a buddy of mine for my dual hoop roll bar. I'm going with these roll bar tube clamps to mount my roll bars to the frame. The problem with them is that there are opposing Allen bolts that will be a problem once mounted as there is only access from one side. So he machined an insert and tig welded it in place. Now both bolts are accessible from one side. My plan is to make the roll bar fit with the hardtop on so it adds a bit of protection. Only negative to that is that they have to be straight up and down and not high enough for my tall passengers. Anyway, he also chamfered the interior edges in order to pull the bars straight up and out of the waterfall if necessary.

Yeah, I've just been busy with family and work and the car has taken a back seat but I'm ready to get it finished. Thanks man. I have had several people show interest but no one make a deal yet. I haven't pushed it much either so not really worried about it. If I get a good offer though..it is gone. I want another project but not another FFR car for now. I am going back to sea soon and won't have that kind of time anymore..so thinking about maybe a new vette and work on that occasionally or maybe a new mustang. Who knows.

Curious to see your "double hoop rollbar" I did add a second tube to my rear hoop right down at shoulder harness level for that mount and to add more taco gussets for lateral bracing on the rear hoop. Any x tubes are going to be noggin knockers so the stiffness had to come from somewhere. The final cage was inspected and blessed by a structural engineer specializing in failure inspections and consultations after same.
I had to do a lot of work to clear the wife's head with my 4 point, mine is not much of an issue. I welded a new chassis receiver just outboard and slightly back of the FF chassis tube and stayed within 3/4" of the inside of the hardtop on mine. The point was enough space for padding and 1/4" extra to avoid squeaks. I used 4 of those camburg fittings on the F-B tubes to connect my front hoop to the back one.
The front hoop is easy to shape and follow the A pillars but it gets complicated where it has to go through the dash and then it drops through right where the door latch is and where your feet swing through under the dash.
I got an A-OK on that design as well but I would still encourage a true leg under the front receivers instead of the ganged plates I used.

Sounds like an engineering PITA. Do you have any pictures of your install? My setup is more because I like the look of the dual bars better. In the end, they will look very similar to the original FFR setup. They will have to be more upright. Im thinking about adding another tube or plate between the two once everything is tacked in for some additional support but by no means is it going to structural if I roll it.

Hey guys...my thread has officially become a stalled build, haha. As the new year approaches, now more than ever, I need to get this car finished. I wanted to know if anyone has a reasonable body guy in the San Gabriel Valley area that will come to me or is local. I'm looking for someone to sand and smooth out the body seams, help with body gaps, and get it ready to spray. Im not sure if I discussed my plans for paint earlier in my build thread but I'm going to use PlastiDip because I love the satin (stealth) look and I'm not looking for a show queen. I don't even need it primed because the PlastDip can be sprayed right onto the gel coat. The best part is it can be painted over or removed and changed. So, in a nut shell, I'm looking for a body guy that needs side work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is with reluctance that I have decided to let someone else finish the hotrod. My work schedule has increasingly kept me busier and busier and priorities have shifted. The build thread pretty much chronicles the build process in as much detail as I could provide without seeing it in person. I believe this project is perfect for the person that is looking to finish the build to their liking but doesn't have the time to start the process from scratch. I have upgraded many of the supplied parts to achieve that race look with compromising form and function. A lot of time and money has been spent with the details ensuring a quality build. I would encourage you to come take a look and ride in it but please serious inquiries only. Thank you for looking.
The current state of the car is as follows:
- Ca state current registration and insured
- Running and Driving
- Body work and paint needs to be completed to your taste
- Interior needs finishing
- Hardtop included
- I have dual hoop roll bars that are fabricated and ready for install or keep the single style
- Center counsel needs to be made to house the Joes Racing switches and/or radio
- I may throw in some stereo equipment if we can agree on price
- I also have PlastiDip sprayable gallons and Clear for a satin finish. (Stormcloud Gray) Kit also includes the HVLP sprayer if you are interested in going the dark/satin stealth look like I was.
Please go through my build page and look at the details and if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call. The car is extremely fast and is rated at approximately 400 HP and 400 lb. ft. of torque. I have spent a lot of money on accessories including Millerspeed pulleys, Canton Racing road race oil pan, BBK headers, Powermaster chrome alternator, Boyd fuel tank, extensive use of sound deadening material and ceramic coatings to keep the heat to a minimum; just to name a few.
$38,000 or best offer.
