Well, Bob delivered my kit yesterday afternoon and I am anxious to get started on this adventure. I went through most of the boxes and started pulling parts to get powder coated. I also removed the body to get access to the sheet metal and suspension. I have most of the drivetrain already and some other cool upgrades. I am going with a 351 Windsor that has about 400 Hp and 400 ft. lbs. of torque. I don't think it will have a problem getting down the road. I also have a "Z" code Ford Motorsports T-5 Tremec to go behind it. I was lucky enough to find this combo from Scott Fraser down in Manhattan Beach. I am upgrading quite of few items on the motor including a Canton road race pan and Millerspeed pulleys. The rear end is out of a '96-'98 Cobra and I painted the calipers and upgraded the discs to Powerstop as did many of you. Here are a few photos and I look forward to interacting with all of you, I'm sure I will have a ton of questions along the way.

I took delivery of my kit (#353) a year ago to the day, and it's such a buzz so close to Xmas. I like the little pink ride in the second pic but your new build is quite a step up!.
Cheers and Good Luck with it all.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to it. I already found some 3 link suspension hardware that wasn't included. No big deal, just some bolts. Can someone confirm for me... I only got one small polished reservoir for my brakes. Most of the other builds I see have the dual Wilwood reservoir, is it aftermarket that people purchase?
"one small polished reservoir" I have no idea what you are talking about. Please post a picture. FFR supplied two plastic Wilwood brand reservoirs. Maybe FFR has changed what they are supplying.

I just double checked my parts inventory checklist and it shows only one reservoir. I do have a few parts due to arrive on the 26th but it looks as though they aren't part of the shipment. I will have to give them a call.
Well, I guess that could be the brake fluid reservoir..... looks a bit small. Did you look in the build manual? Perhaps FFR has some updated pictures that show that reservoir.
Personally, I like the idea of a seperate reservoir for each circuit.

My man Evan with his new ride! Congrats buddy. With that drive train, it should really rip! I'll be there for the engine fire party for sure. And if it actually catches fire, we'll be fine! ;)
Interesting on the brake resevoir! Hadn't heard about the single. I think it might make it a little hard to bleed since you have to be sure the reservoir is full but other than that it's more compact and can be mounted in the engine compartment with that cool polished look.

Thanks for all your help Erik. I hope I didn't create more problems for myself today. I misunderstood the manual and marked and drilled the holes in the firewall where it will mount the body. Based on the layout I don't think it will be an issue but we will see. I will call you tomorrow to talk to you about the powder coating. I have made quite a bit of progress with a lot of the small items. I will post more photos soon.

I made a little more progress the past few days. I finished painting the motor and installed the oil pan. I still need a few accessories for the motor but they can wait a little bit. I sent all of the parts out to the powder coater today and should have them by Thursday next week. I bolted up the rear end and left all of the hardware loose until I get the parts back. I installed the pedal assembly and had a minor stumbling block. I was looking at the clutch quadrant spacer and could not seem to find it among all the hardware. I call Tony and he quickly steered me back on course. The clutch quadrant came with the new and improved clutch mechanism that is supposed to limit the stress put on the pedal. Its a pretty slick upgrade and went in with no problems. Here are a few photos of the progress.

I made a little progress over the last few days. I got all the parts back from the powder coated today and they turned out great. I also have been getting a lot of parts delivered. Here are a couple of new pics of the progress. I went with black rivets to go on the firewall to make them blend in.

Unfortunately I forgot to powder coat the adjustable lower control arm sleeve and had to run down to drop them off to the powder coater. I also thought the spindles were already coated but when I put them on I noticed that it was a anti-rust coating on them. So I am having them done as well. Guess I need some better light in my garage.

I also painted the steering column and installed it a couple of days ago. I put a few coats of satin clear, so I hope that will help protect it from scratches.

I installed the steering rack as well. Now it's time to start bending some brake lines. I will probably install them on the outside like some of you guys have. It seems to be much cleaner and it hides them when the body is on.

I finished plumbing the front brakes. Because I ran them on the outside of the frame rails I had to get a little creative on how to accomplish the task. I hope the lines will not interfere with anything later down the build process. All in all, it came out decent. I mounted the steering wheel however I might remove it because it seems to get in my way at this point.

Have you test fitted the body yet? Will it fit between the firewall and your vertical front brake line? You have done a great job on your build so please check the fitment of the body. I don't think there is enough room for the body to be flush against the fire wall. John

Evan, you may want to do something like this because the body slides in behind the firewall. Just make sure you have the clearance.

I ordered my wheels and tires the other day. I went with the XXR 530s in a flat black finish. My tires also were delivered to the house. I decided on the Toyo Proxes R888. The front wheels are 18x9.75 with a 275/35R18 and the rear are 19x10.75 with a 305/30R19. Hopefully they will look as good as I think they will. The front wheels are on back order and I should have them some time next month. As for the rear wheels, they are pre-order only at this time and should be delivered some time in March or April. This was a difficult decision so I hope I made the right choice.

I fabricated a bracket to mount the electric steering module. I mounted it in a similar location as the manual. Erik told me he spoke with Unisteer and they said there isn't an issue with water exposure unless the unit got submerged. This steering unit is used on Razor side-by-sides and buggies so I'm not worried about it. It should stay nice and cool and heck with the nice weather in So. Cal., I won't drive the car in the rain.

My dad came over this morning and gave me a hand installing the motor and trans. I ran into a snag with the electric power assist motor hitting the pan. I had to pull the motor up and out a bit in order to rework the steering. I had to rotate the steering motor down and redrill a hole in the mounting plate. Now there is plenty of room there however the oil pan is extremely close to the X brace. It's not hitting but I am curious to see if it does with a little movement in the motor. Other than that, the motor went in with no real issues. Maybe someone can tell me how they tightened the driver side motor mount stud nut. It is tight in there especially with the steering motor right below it. Here's a few pics of the end result.

Because I had to clock the EPS motor downward to clear the oil pan, the housing where the wires come out of the motor hit the motor mount bracket. I removed it and used a grinder to put a small radius on it. I used the existing top hole and rotated it clockwise and aligned it in the factory other hole toward the outside of the car. I then drilled out that third hole you see in the picture. I opened up the other holes a size or so because i didn't want to fight To realign the bolts. I hope this helps.

That's a good analogy jayguy. It adds to the sense of accomplishment I guess.
I can't understand why FFR tells guys to install the power steering unit prior to dropping in the engine. Install engine, now tighten that motor mount nut, locate the power steering unit with the correct clocking with respect to clearing the oil pan, drill new holes if necessary. The ps unit will not fit properly with all oil pans. You need to use a pan that is based on a stock pan e.g. Champ Pan. The interference that you discovered between the ps unit and the bottom of the motor mount shouldn't be there if the unit was clocked as per FFR. That isn't to say that that clocking is right. The bottom of the mount was actually changed to accommadate the unit. On the pre-production chassis I had to trim close to a 1/2" off of the lower part of the mount. Also, the original mounting flange only had holes for the standard steering flange bearing.
Here are some old pictures.
Final position after modifying the motor mount and drilling the holes for the ps unit.

Thanks. I did, I got it on December 23rd. I was just looking at my progress today and I was thinking that I feel like I haven't been in the garage all that much. Just a couple hours here and there. I am trying to balance family time and we just had another baby so I would imagine I will probably slow down a bit. To this point I haven't spent one full day in the garage. My budget is starting to get thin but I have a vision of what I want the car to look like so I don't want to do it half ***. If it takes me longer to finish, so be it. Thanks for the kind words and I am looking forward to seeing your '33 come together. Nice '67 Chevelle by the way... I had one in college. It was one of my favorite cars.

I installed the headers today. They are BBK 15110 polished ceramic. The fitment was pretty good with a nice thick flange. The short FFR exhaust pipe that bolts up to the header appears to be hitting the bell housing around the starter. I might have to persuade it to fit. :p

Evan,
Getting ready to mock up the rear end. I was curious as to why you chose to install brakes on the backside of the axle. In speaking with Kevin Shea, he suggested that I mount them on the front side to facilitate parking brake cable reach. This was confirmed for me by the brake instructions. (Page 5)
6. Install the brake caliper brackets so that the caliper will mount on the front side of the axle. Use the four 3/8”-16 flange bolts provided and torque them to 45-50 ft/lbs.

The rear end is out of a '96-'98 Mustang Cobra. I bought it rebuilt and pre-assembled from a company on eBay. I just threw it in as is. I'm not sure if I can reverse them or not and if there is a benefit one way or the other. Have you purchased the parking break cables yet and if so what part # did you find. I have seen a lot of info about this subject but I have yet to find out a definite solution.

I bought the 11.65 rear brake kit from FFR PN 14834. It came with 2 e- brake cables PN 14690. Like the front brakes I guess you have to swap left to right to keep bleeder up. Other than cables reaching I don't suppose there is any benefit functionally.
Maybe someone else can opine on this matter!

That's what I was thinking, I looked at the bleeder screws and they are pointing upward. I can't seem to find that part #. Lokar makes a universal fit one but I understand people have had problems with that also.

I was commenting on Wallace18's build page that the oil filter may hit his EPS motor like it did on mine. He is also running a 351 windsor. I may have found a solution and I wanted to know if anyone has used this part before. It is a Ford Racing 90 degree adapter part # M-6880-A50. According to Summit, it is compatible with my '69 year block. My thought is if I point it toward the front of the car with a short filter, it should work. I would rather not use a filter reclocation adapter. If anyone has any thoughts, I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you happen to know what brand. I have looked at a couple short filters and have not been able to find something that will work. The filter needs to be no taller than 4". I'm addicted to buying parts, it's like Christmas all year! I may need your help on tackling the electrical. Remember Erik... Electrical assistance = Booze for you. :p
On another note, do you know what steering wheel hub adapter application the hotrod uses. I put a seat in the car and it as I suspected, the steering wheel is too close to me. I need to get a short hub. I'm sure NRG has something.
As I mentioned in the other thread, WIX 51311 (Napa 1311). The 51311 has a published height of 3.372" and the Purolator L17019 has a published height of 3.25". FFR actually mentions the L17019 in the manual. All of those filters are easy to buy. I use the WIX 51311 and keep a few on the shelf. You can see how it fits in the 4th picture that I posted earlier in the thread.

I haven't quite finished plumbing the rear brakes because I am not sure if the body will rub on the brake line where I ran it. I am holding it on with clecos until I have an opportunity to test fit the body. In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone has a photo of this area on their '33 so I can see if I need to re-plumb it. I know the manual says to keep the line inside that angled square tubing because the wheel well area is close. I'm not sure why i didn't turn it inward before the vertical tube but apparently I had a synapse collapse perhaps. :) Any help would be great.

I mounted the radiator and grill this afternoon however I cannot figure out how the overflow tank mounts up to it. The manual has an exploded view of it however it does not give detail and it is a poor quality photocopy (blurry). It looks like it lines up with the tabs that mount the fan to the radiator but it the lock nuts hit the fan. I would appreciate it if someone could send me a few detailed pics of how it mounts.

Thanks guys. It took a call to Tony at FFR to put me on track with the clutch quadrant. It was a head scratcher for sure. I installed the stop however I'm not sure it is necessary considering it has a quasi-stop built in. Also, be careful with the clutch bracket locating template supplied in the manual. I put mine on the firewall and transferred the holes not really thinking it would be off. My clutch cable rides slightly crooked through the bracket. I dont think it will be an issue but i wish i would have double checked the alignment prior to drilling all the holes. The firewall has a crazy amount of flex. I read in many other posts about this issue and the body is supposed to limit this but i will probably fabricate a brace for added support. I may also go to a hydraulic clutch in the future. Here is a photo.

After a couple weeks of down time on the car, I had a chance to tackle some of the projects on the car with my buddy Dan. We started off by test fitting the body to see if there were going to be clearance issues with how I ran the brake lines and it appears that there is plenty of room. He helped start some of the wiring on the motor and removing the plastic loom for some nicer looking braided style. There are a lot of wires that I will not be using however I am leaving them coiled up behind the dash. I am just about finished plumbing the rear brake lines (finally). The Speedhut gauges are very nicely packaged and organized. The sending units are weather tight and are nice quality.
I have been been getting some shipments lately. I got my shift lever and knob, drivers seat slides from FFR, and my switches. The fuel pump and regulator I originally purchased wasn't going to work so I returned it for another, so I'm waiting for that to get here so I can work on the fuel system. Here are some pics of the progress and I will post some of the switches tomorrow.

I made a flex bracket for the firewall but the idea is that mounting the body will eliminate it. Still, if you don't get something, it will bend during go kart testing. I left mine in but it looks like I'll have to remove it to put in my new clutch clutch quadrant parts.

Well... It has been slow going on the '33 lately with a 2 mos. old baby at home but I was able to get a few hours today with the help of my lovely wife. I picked up my pulleys from Allistair at Millerspeed and they are impressive. I also went with his alternator bracket and a Powermaster alternator. It went on so easily I thought I was doing something wrong. I'm waiting to put the crank pulley on until I get my rockers adjusted.
I also started fabricating a brace for the firewall to limit the flex. It isn't any easy task due to the fact that there are a lot variables to consider, i.e. body, clutch quadrant, bolting location, etc. I will post pics when it is done.

My good buddy Dan came over again to help me tackle the electrical... I was feeling a little overwhelmed. I haven't had any time to work on the car with a 4 mos. baby boy at home so I wanted to make the most of our time. I fabricated a bracket to hold the Painless aux fuse panel and mounted it in a similar fashion as tHE Ron Francis one. Dan wired up my switch panel including the push button start. We left a lot of slack in the harnesses because I'm not sure if i will mount forward of the shifter or behind.
I also finished up the fuel line going from the regulator to the carb. I still need to wire up the gauges and the battery cutoff switch. Here are a few pics.

Continued some of the wiring with my buddy and was able to get the exhaust mocked up and mounted. I hope I'm not gonna have problems with the mufflers blowing out and having to redo everything, like others have, but it went in okay. I am going to fabricate my own side exit exhaust tips, not a big fan of the round tubes. The gauges are wired up and we were able to remove quite a bit of the unused dash harness wires. We rewired it using the plugs for ease of disassembly. Still have some wires to run for the cutoff switch and stereo etc..

Once again, finally found a bit of time to work on the '33. We finished the battery cables minus the jumper posts I am going to add. I decided to upgrade to 2/0 cable... Hindsight Im not sure it was necessary but its done now. Installed the last of the brake lines in the rear so I should be able to bleed them now. We ran a harness for the stereo and speakers. I mounted the battery cutoff switch behind the passenger seat and I like the way it is somewhat inconspicuous.
Once i do a final adjustment on the rocker arms, i should be very close to firing it up. My rear wheels still have not come in. I ordered them in January and they keep pushing back the delivery date one month at a time, so now its August. Here are a few progress pics.

No Boz1911, the earlier kits came with two but FFR switched to a single. It's just T'd below it, i guess its plenty of reserve fluid for the system to operate efficiently. I haven't heard of anyone having issues with the single to this point, maybe someone has some better info with regards to the single vs. the dual.

I managed to make some progress on the build over the last week or so. I coated the bottom side of the floor panels with a rubber undercoat spray and started to rivet them down. Like others have done, I decided to cut the front toe kick area off the floorboard so it was easier to install and then riveted it separately.
I also fabricated some heat shields that I installed between the mufflers and the floor panels. I also finished mounting the fuel lines.

I like the heat shields, nice work. I was planning on using some heat shield mat but it being glued on I have a concern with it coming off. I'm still waiting on my mufflers and front pipes to finish under the car then I can start finalizing the interior installation. I think I'll cut the kick panels also.

Thanks Boz, Erik did the same thing. Those mufflers are very close to the floor boards. I painted the muffler side of the shield with a high temp. engine paint and sparyed the rubber undercoat on the top side. Hopefully it doesnt melt it off. Cutting the kick panels was definetly the right move considering how many times you have to take them in and out.

Hey Evan, yeah it could melt off. You want a reflective material for heat and light and a rubberized surface for sound. I guess we'll see. Which coating did you use? Evercoat or the Pepboys tar stuff?

There are two really good products for sound and heat control, which spray on, and are far superior to undercoating, and will not melt off, like a rubber or tar based coatings. Lizard Skin Ceramic Insulation and Lizard Skin Sound Control. Summit, Eastwood, and Southern Hot Rods all carry them, and the gun to shoot them on with. I'm not familiar with the technical specifications for the Ceramic Insulation, but I suspect that it is not recommended for really high heat applications, such as directly applied to exhaust systems. Ceramic coatings like the ones used on exhaust headers, make a dramatic reduction in radiated heat from headers and exhaust pipes, so that may be a possible solution.

Thanks Robert, i may have the heat shields sprayed with a ceramic powder coating and then reinstall them. It seems to me there is a huge issue with heat in these cars, therefore i may even wrap the mufflers with header wrap. I spoke to Tony Zullo and he really recommends sound and heat deadening on the backside of the firewall. So, i think i will spend some extra time with the insulation process.
Thanks tcarlson, i appreciate it. It feels good to get back out there and work on it.

Made some progress on the build over the weekend. The throttle pedal and cable are installed. I made a 1" spacer to bring the pedal closer to me. I also installed the 33 machine hitch setup, don't think i will be towing anything but it gives me a really nice place to put the license plate. I elected to bolt the braces in because it firmed it up enough to hopefully give the fiberglass body a little protection in case someone bumps the rear end. I will be making some rocker arm adjustments this weekend. When i purchased the motor and trans setup, i pulled a valve cover and noticed one of the rocker arms was loosened and turned sideways off the pushrod, good thing i didnt fire the motor up before checking. So I am just going to check the adjustment of all of them.

A buddy of mine came over and helped me adjust the rockers today. I also unfortunately ended up buying the updated transmission tunnel. The older style tunnel I received with the kit was an absolute nightmare, so I am in the process of installing that.
My rear wheels finally came after waiting for them since January 23rd. They are 19x10.75 and after fitting them on the hub, I'm a little worried that they may be close to the body. I have only temporarily test fit the body once and cannot remember how close the body sits in that area. I may have to get spacers and longer studs if it becomes a problem once I put the body on.

This is a picture of Boz's installed. I had to cut a tremendous amount out of the older style one and they don't include the sheet metal to reform it around the throttle pedal as shown in the manual. After talking to Tony Zullo, he said he had a hell of a time getting his to fit as well. Even after cutting a bunch of material out, the tunnel would not sit flat on the floor around the area if the drive shaft hoop. I've already installed the main tunnel and it fits much better. I think it shouldn't be a problem with clearance around the throttle pedal.

The wheels look great. I'm running a 20x10 on the rear and clearance is not an issue. To get a reference the body mount tab is by the upper shock mount. Add the width of the fiberglass and the small spacer and you'll have a good idea of your clearance. I don't remember exactly but the backspace on my wheels are 5 and 3/4 +/- a 1/4 inch.

Took this pic of mine this afternoon so you could see where the body ends up. With the 305 width and the width of your wheel there won't be much tire outside the edge of the wheel. And with 30 percent profile doubt you need much clearance, won't have any bulge (or give -lol) when you hit a bump.

Hey Nick, if you download the Photobucket app on your device and upload them there, I have found that it is much easier to manage the photos. After you upload them into an album there, you copy and paste the img code and paste it in the quick reply window when updating your build it should show up full size. Hope this helps, if not feel free to hit me up again with more questions.
Wallace, i contemplated doing the same and only have size 8. I will just drive barefoot.

Finally got the transmission tunnel mocked up in the car. Although it fit better than the other one, it kicked my butt...Trying to make enough room for the gas pedal, creating space for the wires, and keeping room for the e-brake. The tunnel still has a small gap around the sheet metal that goes over the drive shaft hoop. Anyway its in, now move on the the riv-nuts and bolt it in.
On another note, I dropped off my heat shields at fhe powder coater to have them ceramic coated. Hopefully that will help with the heat transfer.

Got the car off the jack stands and sitting on its own feet. I was able to get the ebrake working and had to make some longer arms in order to clear the bracket. I also bled the brakes and it went strangely well. My buddy Dan hopefully is going to pay a visit in a couple of weeks and we can make sure all the wiring is in order before firing it up. I also got the heat shields back from being ceramic coated, hopefully that will help deflect some of that heat under my a**.

We accomplished a bunch a stuff today. My buddy Dan came over and we went through the electrical system and hooked up the headlights and tested the functionality of the gauges etc.. I hooked up the coolant lines and put the Millerspeed pulleys and belt on. A few days ago I put oil in the motor and checked to see if I was getting oil up to the rockers and we have success. I also put some copper crush washers on the master cylinders and I will check for leaks in the morning. We test fit the body and the rear wheels have plenty of clearance. Hopefully it will finally run soon. Here are a few progress pics.

Thanks for the kind words and no problem... If you need any other photos you can think of just shout. One note on the second pic, keep the lines a bit further away from the firewall as the body tucks right up against it. This was pointed out to me regarding their location. I bent them further in order to create room.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. It definitely is a great feeling. Just keep chipping away at it. I was moving at a faster pace but had to slow down after our son was born. 12-08-2013, 06:55 PM
Congrats!! Very cool driving a car that you built. I've been attacking some of those little problems but mostly filling and sanding the body. I swear there's more work to do on the top than the rest of the car. Working on some bracing for under the trunk panel, it latches perfectly when I reach under and support the floor. Also chasing a minor oil leak, at first I thought it was the oil pan but today I realized it was the rear of the intake manifold. I knew I didn't use enough silicone, dammit.
esff32
12-08-2013, 07:51 PM
Thats frustrating! I hate leaks of any kind. I was wondering what happened to you, haven't seen any updated photos lately. I will have to pick your brain about your experience with the body work. I'm not very experienced with that aspect of the build. I'm still dealing with the leaks on the master cylinders. I also need to change over the steering rack bracket to the updated one. Which bracket do you have and could you snap a close up photo of it?
Boz1911
12-09-2013, 05:24 AM
Not sure which bracket mine has but I'll get a photo for you. I figured pics of body filler and sanded panels weren't worth posting. After sanding all the seams I went over them with filler then sanded that off. I'm doing all the seams with glaze now. Biggest problem is I can't really sand in the mornings before work. I used to do a lot of painting on RC airplanes so I figured this was just a larger project. Worst case if it turns out bad I'll load it up and take it to someone to paint. I'm also changing to anti bump steer setup on the front. One other problem I have is there is no one to help me take the top on and off so I am going to install a electric hoist like Tom did to help make that task easier.
I don't mind popping the intake off, it's easier than the oil pan. I would have found it sooner but the oil is so clean I didn't see it until yesterday.

Thanks for the update Boz. I will probably try to tackle the body myself as well...have to learn somehow. I just got the updated bracket from FF but I dont think its going to work. The bracket where it mounts to the rack is a larger diameter and there would be a ton of slop in it and it would be worse than it is now. I need to put a call into them to find out where to go from here.
esff32
12-10-2013, 08:56 PM
Build update: my friend Dan came over today and tied up some loose ends with regards to the wiring. The cooling fan is working with the switch and fan Thermo switch, the red aircraft style switch now kills the motor. With some further investigation, it seems as though my Speedhut fuel gauge is not working properly so I am sending it back for them to figure out whats wrong with it.
My 3rd link was not perfectly lined up with the banana bracket because the rear end vent was in the way. I removed the vent and threaded a flush allen plug in the hole and sanded it smooth with the axle tube. The bracket is now on top of the previous vent location. I will probably spring for a Ford racing diff cover and I will drill and tap a vent port at the top. I also welded the bracket to the axle housing, hopefully I got enough penetration on it...I was afraid of blowing through. That would be a bad day.
Up next: To deal with the slop in the steering rack it was FF's recommendation to put a spacer behind the "sway bar style" bushing on the rack which will allow the bolts going through the Delrin bushing to draw the rack tighter to the frame. Apparently I have the older style rack and cannot use the updated bracket, it's the wrong size.
The other order of business is to disassemble the front suspension to replace the lower ball joint dust boots that were already cracked, ugh! That ought to be fun trying to do that without destroying the powdercoat. Oh yeah, and I'm still dealing with master cylinders that leak, so annoying. I'm about to spend another $50 to replace the fittings. Good times!
Silent T
12-11-2013, 10:44 AM
Looking and sounding very nice!
I too had to remove my lower ball joints after torque'n em down because I had put them on backwards the first time!
I did not want to mess up all the new boots, joints and powder coating with a fork so I found a socket that fit perfectly between the the upper and lower ball joint nuts. I removed the lower nut and put it back upside down and used it to "push" against the socket and separate carefully. With some tapping on the arm with a mallet while I cranked on the nut - POP!
Worked like a charm.
By the way - I have the rubber o-ring style fittings on my masters with no leaks so far. I also used them on a hydraulic clutch setup on another build that never had a problem. I never thought of the rubber degradation with brake fluid because the kits all use rubber brake hoses to feed the master from the reservoir.
Good luck

Thanks Silent T, I appreciate the help. I just ordered the -4 or 7/16" Earls Stat-o-seals for the banjo bolts. After speaking to Earls, they said they aren't designed for banjo bolts but others have had good luck with them. At this point I am willing to try anything. Thanks for the kind words regarding the build, I truly appreciate that.
esff32
12-19-2013, 12:35 AM
Well, success! The stat-o-seals worked and the leak has stopped. I replaced the lower ball joint dust boots and got everything put back together. I made a much needed purchase from Summit, Ford Racing rear diff cover, Lizardskin, etc.. I took the car for a short joyride down a couple of streets and man am I going to love driving this car. I also installed a NRG quick release. It puts the steering wheel a little closer to me than I would like but it will help when auto crossing and help limit arm fatigue. I think its just going to take some getting used to.
Time to move onto the body and sound deadening.

Santa swung by Summit and dropped off a few early Christmas gifts. I installed a Ford Racing rear differential cover. I had to plug the vent in the axle tube because it was in the way of the 3rd link banana bracket so I put a vent in the fill port. Hopefully its high enough that the gear oil won't work its way out. I installed some wire separators but a couple of the wires were a bit short so I made due. I may get an MSD distributor and new wires in the future so I can custom cut the length.

Anyone see an immediate problem with the way I did the vent?
Evan,
Only concern I have is you call it a fill port, tell me you didn't fill it to that level. The 8.8 and the 9" for that matter, have the fill plug on the front side of the case. The oil level should not be filled more than the front fill plug. The one you have in the cover is much higher and your vent should be fine as long as the oil is filled to the proper level.

Hahaha, no Frank. I just filled it from there and let it dribble out the port on the yoke side.

Well after almost a year from my delivery date, my '33 is ready for the body installation. I took it around the neighborhood a couple of times and man is this thing fast. I had a nice visit with "frankeeski" from the forum and Mark III owner today. We had a nice discussion and he gave me a lot of great tips and tricks, thanks Frank! It is also my dad's birthday today so it was nice spending quality time with him.
The body is just sitting on the frame and I didn't have a lot of time to work on it because the wife wanted some "family time". I'm just elated that it is on the car and it is starting to look like a car. The frame is sitting perfectly level and the body is perfectly level as well. Unless I'm missing something, it seems as though it is ready to be anchored as is. I need to sand down a couple of areas on the body where it is hitting the down tube near the firewall but other than that, it seems to fit pretty well.
I also notice some gear oil from the rear end coming out of the vent port I just installed. It needs a 90 degree fitting installed to raise it up some, simple fix.

Only the few times that I have go-carted around the neighborhood. I like the look of the tread pattern and the sidewall. Hopefully they don't wear out prematurely...if you know what I mean.

Made a bit more progress on the '33 over the last few days. I cut the holes for the gauges and fabricated a panel that locates my headlight switch, gauge dimmer, and ignition switch hidden under the dash. It came out okay, would have been nicer if I used a sheet metal brake...eyeball engineering at its best. Since I was getting a bit of gear oil out of the vent in the cover, I installed an elbow. If it's still not high enough, I will put a nipple to raise it up more.
I also drilled and tapped the frame at the rockers to fasten the body. I started insulating the firewall, wish I would have done that prior to the electrical. The gas fill neck went in without a problem. Hopefully I can get the body reinstalled after spraying the under side with some Lizardskin. Then I need to finish installing the insulation to the rest of the interior.

It was a very productive Friday. I managed to spray the Lizardskin sound deadener on the underside of the body, transmission tunnel, gas tank, and trunk sheet metal. The body is back on the car and the gauges are installed.
My question is, I took a measurement of the cabin space from the dash toward the rear as per the manual. I had 45.50" however after reinstalling it, I'm off by about 1/8". Does anyone see a problem with this? It's an 1/8" larger than before.
Up next, fit the doors and trunk, fit the windscreen, tidy up the wiring under dash, bolt the seats in, insulate the floors, etc. My mirrors are on the way from Finish Line. I haven't decided whether or not to use the seat slides or bolt the seats down. I can already tell I might need to sit a little higher due to the fact I am a strong 5'8" My plan is to start the registration process prior to fitting the hard top and hood.

Your Hot Rod is coming along nice & is looking good Evan. It's good to know the lizard skin can be sprayed onto the fiberglass pieces also, I was wondering what product I could use for the under side of the body.
However, I won't be spraying anything for awhile, it was -2 degrees F here last night and we have 8 inches of snow on the ground.
Happy New Year,

Thanks Nevin! The Lizardskin was so easy to use and easy to clean up. I only wish I would have used it on the underside of the floor aluminum.
Thats cold brother, its a little chilly here too...its gonna get down to 75 today. Sorry to poke fun. Stay warm and crank up those heaters in the garage and get to it.
Happy New Year and looking forward to seeing your progress.

It's been great following your build Evan. I too used Lizard Skin but on both sides of all my aluminum panels except the firewall and footboxes. The 2 gallon cans of both SC and CI were enough to get it done. I then trimmed the excess off the edges with sharp blades and files and rattle canned a couple of coates of VHT gloss black engine enamel on them before assembly. I found the finish on the bare Lizard Skin to be a little powdery without the goss black top coat. The picture gives a good idea of how it turned out. You'll also see Tim Whittaker's clever rear deck adjuster, a pair of billet trunk hinges from Whitby's and the QA1's I have used in my build.
Cheers,
Neil.

Very nicely done Neil. Looks great. I contemplated getting the rear deck adjuster. I test fit the trunk and it looks like it's not the same radius as the body so it definitely going to need a bit more attention. I know many others have had the same problem.
I tidied up the wiring under the dash, mounted the taillights, installed the fuel filler and hose to the tank.

Looking at other peoples center consoles made me explore how I wanted to lay out my console. After a lot of thought, I was having a hard time locating where I was going to put both sets of switch panels and still include all the elements of my design. I didn't want to put it on the dash for fear it would throw off the uniformity. Due to the fact that the aircraft style ignition needs to avoid getting accidentally shut off, I decided to put it on the dash anyway. After it was all said and done, its actually growing on me. Thoughts? The other nice part about the location is the access window it creates for the master cylinders.
I decided to order the Breeze seat slides/mounts and forego the ones I bought from FFR. I propped the front of the seat up 2" like the Breeze ones do and it was a lot more comfortable. It pushes my torso further from the steering wheel and it puts a natural bend in my legs which seems to be more comfortable.
Can anyone show me some detailed pictures of how you mounted your lower nose cone piece to the body/brackets and grill? The manual is a little vague or my mind is...one or the other. Again, thank you for the continued help fellas. Here are a few pics.

Haha, I not looking forward to that process. As far as I can see in the manual, it doesn't really show if the nose cone gets bolted through that bracket on the side with the lower part of the body. I know they get fastened together but is it done through the bracket?

The rear deck adjuster in Neils picture not only raises or lowers that rear deck but also adds stability. Without it, you can lift the panel or push it down a considerable distance.
Some have found that the nose cone fit can be easier if you split it down the middle and reglass. Mine was about 1/4" too wide and fit much better using this process. Dan Ruth was the first to post on this I believe.

Yes the nose gets bolted through that bracket. Fitting the nose takes a while and you're better off getting everything done including the hood and then put that piece on and trim to fit the bottom of the grill last.

You'll notice that it may take a bit of twisting to get the rear of the chin lined up to the body at that junction. If I remember I twisted and tightened and it was pretty straight. good news is that it's not that noticeable. I'll also see if I can send my extra skid rail for the chin when I send the valve cover bolts.

Well....it's been a very frustarting 10 hours on the first door. I started the process following Erik's videos and cross referencing the manual and didn't have a problem with the hinge slot side of things. I'm using Tim Whitakers hinge slot covers and they are very nicely made and give a ton of room for adjustment and or error.
It all changed when it came to the striker bolt and latch. The striker included in the kit is different than the earlier ones and do not have the Allen key slot in the end of it. Erik's video shows the striker bolt mounted through the body with the washer on the outside. The manual shows drilling out a 3/4" hole in the body and passing the striker bolt through. The striker bolt is mounted directly to the bracket that attaches to the body. I dont like this method due to the fact there needs to be an oblong hole in the body in order to adjust the striker. There isn't a washer on the outside to cover the hole. The striker bolt was hitting the door when it was mounted on the outside.
The bear claw latch is another story. The manual has provisions for yellow or clear nickel style latches. Erik's video uses the yellow and I have the clear. Based on where my striker was mounted, and the location the latch needed to mounted in the door, I had to notch out the door really far toward the inside in order to clear the bracket that holds the spring. I even ground it down as per the manual but it didn't make a difference. You can see in the picture, I had to cut out an entire piece of fiberglass out. I dont believe this will be a problem because the the door panel will cover it up.
After all is said and done, the door opens and closes and latches however you can see from the pics, the gap at the upper front is less than desirable. It seems as though the door skin itself needs to rotate counterclockwise about an 1/8" and the gap would be better. The gap toward the rear doesn't rub but could move toward the front. The body line in the rear is perfect. I would have to oblong the holes in the door for the latch mechanism to slide upward which in turn would lower the door.
Here are some pictures and if anyone has any ideas...I'm all ears.

The doors have been my biggest PITA. I do plan on making some aluminum covers for the door strikers when all is done. The striker bolt bracket has vertical adjustment. My guess is you need to lower it some, then the adjustment process begins again...........and again, and again........

I had to cut off the hex head on the striker on my 33 for it to work for me. I did the door gaps after I had the door mounted the way I wanted. I used 3/16" pin stripe masking tape on the edge to give me the gap. Then applied white marker paint. Then used a belt sander to shape the door. It worked good for me this way.

I have the older style gold latches. The ones you have look like they install totally different, compared to mine yours look upside down (there is a left and right). As far as the door alignment, there are screw holes in the frame in the front and back, top and bottom to bolt the door shell to the frame. You can "twist" the door to line up better and lock it down with those screws (within reason) you might not get it perfect, but should be able to get it better. If you find it's that far off, your door could be defective and might warrant a replacement.
Those strikers do suck though, not sure why they changed them.
Also, make sure the front and rear of the body is secured in it's final resting place while doing your door alignment. The body is a wet noodle unless it's bolted down.

Thanks for the help guys, the body is bolted down permanently right now. The door is bolted to the bracket in the rear but not the front yet. I will try and make some adjustments once I get the other door on and hope I can get it a little bit better.

That striker is BS. I asked FFR and they said this method was easier but that hardware blows. You want a real striker not a hex bolt! Lame. Also, put a paint stick in the back door gap and I think you'll close the gap in the front in doing so. The rear is way to small right now from the looks of it.

I cut the striker bolt heads off and filed two flats on it so I could grab it with a 7/16 wrench. I mounted it with the washer over the body and bent the bracket behind to match the body curvature. it only sticks out about 3/4" total. much cleaner and neater. I'd take a picture but the body is off now.
Looks like your doors just need final sanding to fit. I made sure the body lines matched up and then sanded to fit. This caused the top of the doors to be low but easier to fix then moving the body "bulb" into alignment.
I used 1/4" tape to get the gaps consistant between the body and doors all around. I was able to do most of the sanding with the doors all mounted. Back is close to body but being carefull and slow its better than taking the doors off and on each time. The doors can be twisted slightly to fit flush but once you put on the weatherstripping it will help line up too.
Good Luck.

Thanks for wishing me luck but I'm off duty today, it was a couple of miles from my house. It looked pretty impressive early this morning but they got a quick handle on it.
On another note, I did pick up my hitch at the powder coater and it is pretty square to the body. Now that its at ride height, I noticed that the braces cannot be used due to the fact they are about 1/4" from the four link mounts on the rear end. So hopefully it doesn't make noise when it moves up and down. I might look into another option for making it rigid.
Where can I find the thin masking tape you used on your doors to mark you trim lines? I called a bunch of hardware and craft stores today with no luck.

Thanks for the tips Silent T. I loosened everything up today and played around with some of the adjustments. I think I can get it a little better but I don't think it will be perfect all the way around. If I can split the difference, I will be happy with that. I only wish I would have sprayed the LizardSkin on the inside of the doors prior to installing them.

Glad to hear you're okay, Evan, hope your fellow firefighters are also.
After reading some solutions to door mounting I decided to take Silent's advise and cut the striker bolt head off. The left door has never closed just right but after grinding the striker bolt head things seemed a good bit better. Looking at the striker from the pass side revealed the striker bolt was a tad too long and contacting the door due to the slight taper of the door. I readjusted the striker bolt inward and for the first time since the drivers door has been on it closes and latches properly.
