My God does this bring back memories. Back in 1977 when I was 25 and full of piss and vinegar I had a little 1973 Mercury Capri with the 2600cc(159CI) V-6..It was a fun little car but with 142HP at the flywheel and 107HP at the rear wheels in a 2300lb car it was just 'OK" but I wanted more.
A buddy told me about this place in Marblehead,Mass called DFRE( Doug Frazier Racing Engines) that was "doing amazing things with turbochargers.
Yea, I had to go and see. I meet Doug, I know nothing them about turbos and he says "You want to see what they can do?"
This is where had I been older and wiser I'd have said NO! and run like hell but I was 25 and said YES!
He takes me over to this little tiny car, never saw one of these before and it's a 1969 Lotus Elan but it's the worlds greatest sleeper.
Inside is a 2000 cc Ford pinto engine "built" turbocharged with 25lbs of boost.
Now we all talk power to weight yes?
This thing weighed 1800lbs and had 300HP.He took me for a ride through the streets of Marblehead thats shaped like a 4 leaf clover and scared the living crap out of me.
I had never been around corners at anything near that speed and boy did he sell me.
I signed up and $1700.00 later I walked away with a rajay turboed 275HP Capri.
Now that I've given you totally unneeded info, the point is that while I was there I saw hung on the side of a wall a plastic wrapped frame and body.
I asked what it was and he said "It's a Deserter GS. I was going to do it but no time. Interested in the whole thing for $500.00?"
I passed but to this day I wish I hadn't..I remember reading in one of the hot rod mags that a Deserter GS with a 180HP Turbo Corvair motor did 3.6s zero to 60..
That was unheard of in those days.

That's a great story Movieman. At the time Autodynamics (who made the GS cars) was one of the biggest race car builders in the country.
I'm shooting for around 1500 lbs and a "mild" 250hp. Should be fun!
