View Full Version : Selecting an Engine

Hey all!

I've been searching through the forum to figure out different engine options for the Type 65 and what impact that will have on the build process. I can't find a post that spells it all out clearly. So if someone has a link, please let me know.

I want to build a car to be a good touring machine but I'd prefer to get a newer engine from the Ford modular family. I want to get an older 4.6L or early 5.0L and rebuild the engine. Partly because of budget and partly for the fun of it.

My understanding is that the Coupe was originally designed to have a 302 small block and if i choose that engine it's easy-peasy fits like a glove. When I look at the modulars, it gets a little confusing. It sounds like the gen 1 and gen 2 Coupes would need modifications to the footbox to put a 4.6 or a Coyote in it. Is that true of the gen 3 Coupe redesign? The brochure says that it's made to fit the Coyote. Does the wider heads of the 4v have any interference from the hood, headers, or anything else in the engine compartment? A Lincoln Mark VIII with the 4v Intech has great numbers on paper but I've read about some modifications to get everything to fit and not a lot of details about what's included in "everything".

I'm hoping someone has a one-stop information page about how different engines fit into the kit. Or even how the engine compartment compares to the Coupe. If I drop a question about the 4.6L on David's Coyote page (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?7315-New-Dedicated-Ford-Modular-5-0-quot-Coyote-quot-Forum) will I get voted off the island for being 0.4L light?

Anyway, this post kind of got away from me. I'd love any help that you folks can give me in planning this out. Thanks in advance!

Ciao,

Joe

The Coyote fits the Gen III coupe very well. And it is easy to use the Tremec T56 transmission with it. The 302 fits, but it is placed further back in the engine bay which leaves little room for the T56. The TKX fits fine with the 302.

I would not go with a 4.6. Any generation of the 5.0 Coyote should be fine. Look through the build threads in the forum and you will find mostly Coyote builds.

You’ll probably get more elaborate recommendations from others but in a nutshell the Gen 3 was designed around using the Coyote and of course accommodates the low deck (302 based) Windsor easily. TKX or T56 work well with either when using IRS; T56 and straight axle not so much. Personally I wouldn’t waste any time or effort on a 4.6.

I agree with the above comments, 4.6 is heavy and weak, Coyote, Oldschool SBF or LS... mine has a mild LS3 mostly because I had it and a built T56 from a previous car and I don't care about originality.

I have no "right" to ask this question as I am not planning a coupe build: Does the tall deck Windsor also fit?

Overall, it’s your car, your money, and you should build what you like.

My preference is to be somewhat true to the era the car was designed. My USRRC 289 Cobra replica will have a 289 based engine, like they did back in the day. Party because I was raised on 289s and partly because it just “fits” the whole theme. If I was building a modern Supercar replica I would go with a Coyote.

It can. You either have to use a low profile intake with a drop base air cleaner or alter the hood for clearance.

I had to use a drop base air cleaner, alter the hood for clearance and use a tapered spacer under the Sniper.

I have a coyote in mine (just bought it so this might be build dependent). Benefits: no carb to worry about, pretty easy to get 500hp out of it

What is a wash: you either custom fab the exhaust or use the 427 4”. Mine has the cat chambers (no cat) which serves as an expansion chamber for the exhaust which helps the sound a bit. I have flow through muffler tips and you don’t need ear pro on drives (I wear it anyway)

One thing I don’t like: the exhaust isn’t that lopey sound you get with like a comp cam thumper. I also think the exhaust pipes are a little short, so I’m going to source slightly longer ones to get the opening closer to the rear tire purely for aesthetics.

The original car was a 380hp 289 which you can hit on pump gas stroking to a 331 or going with the taller 351, though I am sure there are trade offs the pros here could comment on.
