View Full Version : Gen 3 Coupe E-Brake Cable Connection

I have followed the Factory manual to connect the E-brake cables to the E-brake handle. There was no slack at all - to get the bolt through the clevises and the rod end I had to compress the e-brake levers on the back of the calipers so I could pull out a bit more length of the inners. So when I release the calipers, even with the e-brake handle in the full off position, there is some tension in the cables. I can pull the e-brake handle up about half way and no further.

What really concerns me is that there's only about 6mm of thread engagement between the male and female rod ends which connect to the clevises, as illustrated in the photo. That doesn't seem like enough when there's just one 1/4" thread taking the whole of the load to engage both rear brakes. I'm wary of winding it in further in case that starts the rear pads binding - if they're not already (it's hard to tell because the pads now drag even when the cables are disconnected).

Ideally I'd like to use a pair of rod ends with a larger diameter thread, but that would be too big to go between the two flanges at the base of the e-brake handle. Alternatively, I could look for a 1/4" male rod end with a longer thread, if such a thing exists.

Is this a known issue? If so, is there a recommended solution?

Grateful for any advice.

I had the same issue with mine. I rigged up some hardware to lengthen it a little to get a more secure connection then left it fully engaged for a few weeks to let it stretch a bit. At some point I went back and removed the extension and now it's assembled per the manual.

Hey Dan, that's a great shout - thank you! I hadn't thought about stretching the cables - I shall follow your idea!
