I’ve had the car aligned but my steering wheel is a couple of splines off. When I go to adjust this, I plan to loosen the set screw splined coupler on the steering shaft at the PS assembly, then loosen the bearing assembly at the footbox, which is on the inside of the panel. Will this give me enough slack to pull the splined coupler off the PS shaft enough so I can adjust it a couple of splines?

I can’t recall how much room there is from initial assembly.

If the flange bearing is inside the footbox then yes, you should be able to pull the shaft inward once it’s loose.

That would drive me nuts. Like burn the car to the ground nuts. I’m anxious just thinking about it. lol

First do a quick check of tierod length. You should see the same number of theads exposed on both sides.

Alignment shop should redo the alignment and make this right.

I'm confused.

Part of doing a 4 wheel alignment is putting the steering wheel in the center position, then holding it there with a tool that jams against the drivers seat.

Then making the final adjustments.

So after the alignment is done the steering wheel is "centered".

The steering hub was not on at the time of the alignment. I used a rough centering method at the rack.

PMD and Born, that is 100% true on a standard car assembled by a factory. It gets less true for a diy built car. There have been many threads over the years where a builder needed to take the column apart to center the wheel. I have helped on a couple of FFRs where it was easiest to remove the rack from the frame to get clearance to separate the splines.

I have the bearing inside the wheel box. I did a preliminary alignment of wheels and steering during the build before final alignment. With the set screws backed off and the knuckle turned a little I was able to disengage the shaft and adjust by a few splines. Hope it works out.

Don't know if this will help but here's an old but good thread.
