Hood latch installation

As mentioned earlier I have what I call a Wow in my hood. As Jeff said I have "one of those" body's.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216525&d=1752950470

Per his suggestion I am mounting my latches at 14" vs 12" in the manual. This will help hold the corners down. Way more important that the hood sit right.

One of the things Paul did on one of his builds is index the bracket so the latch naturally stops in the center. I really like the idea so I copied it.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216526&d=1752950470

This works well. The latch sort of clicks into place.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216529&d=1752950528

I used rivets for now to hold the brackets and installed a few bumpers. I will go with the D Seal after paint but this works for now.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216528&d=1752950528

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216527&d=1752950470

The latches are in and the hood works. The last thing in this phase to do is temp mount the side mirror, rear mirror and visors. I will then take pictures to start the NY DMV process.

For all intents and purposes I am kind of done with all the big chunky stuff for now. My goal is to finish the powder coating (there is a lot to do) and get the car registered to drive legally by Sept. Then it's time to hunker down and wait for a call from Jeff.

I have also decided on a paint scheme. I think I'm 99.5% sure of it. I few minor details here or there but I am ready.

I’ve been thinking about how to make those same latches work too.

There’s a YouTube channel where someone installs the large version:
https://youtu.be/u2952zBmhyw?si=WCk2dPNgzEYYCsfi

I also found some guys that installed the small version, the small size you can buy cups to help locate the pin:
https://gatewaycobraclub.com/forum/threads/replacement-push-button-hood-latches.4884/

Quik-Latch doesn’t offer the locking feature on the smallest size which is a bummer since those seem like they would be the easiest solution to install.

Interested to see any solutions you come up with.

End Game

I am on NY registrations door step. I have filled out the initial application. When you send this into the state you send copy's of all your major components receipts. For me this is kit, engine, transmission, wheels and tires. You include 4 pictures (one from each side) and a weight certificate. I have Friday off from work and plan to trailer it to get it weighed in the morning. Hoping the have the application in the mail this weekend. From there once approved I can then make an appointment with the State police for a salvage inspection where they will assign me a VIN. I can then register it like any other car. In between the two inspections I will pull all the bare metal and shiny bits off the car and have them powder coated the Prismatic Powder stone black.

So this week is all about getting ready for those pics while knocking out a few practical odds and ends. I did a batch of powder coating myself. Among that batch was the rear splash guards. When installing them I forgot about the gap in the front of the wheel well. I decided to trim up some covers using spare aluminum. I added bulb seal and put them in with 3 rivets. I plan to drive the car over the fall so I need them in. I will drill all this back out before taking it for paint.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216731&d=1753312786

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216732&d=1753312786

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216729&d=1753312716

While powder coating I took the opportunity to finish up the wiper arms. Coated them black and used a little JB Weld to make the J hook permanent.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216730&d=1753312716

Another NY requirement is "padded" visors. I will tape some foam on these for the pictures so I left the paper on for now. It all seams a little silly but these boxes need to be checked in order to get the VIN. Once approved nobody looks at this stuff again so you can do what you want but not until then.

Last is I got my rear view mirror mounted. I was planning on using a 3D printed bracket but didn't like how it turned out so I purchased this bracket from an Etsy vendor. It's a nice aluminum piece that came with all the required hardware. I will also powder coat this.

Jessie, I just went thru this NY fun as you know and in the end some of the NY requirements will stay longer term. The wipers I have used a couple times already. As far at the padded visors I had my daughter help me and we covered in some left over vinyl from the trans tunnel cover. Overlap the ends and seal with contact cement left over from carpet. Easy peasy AND they Work to stop sun glare as well as the wind turbulence. Several have said they look good so they will stay.

Regarding the visors; when I did Chuck Krueger's car he said that he just cut the toes out of a pair of tall sweat socks and slid them over the acrylic visors. Passed! :D

Chin Spoiler PSA

Friday morning I borrowed my neighbors Tahoe and rented a car hauler. I loaded her up to get her weighed when I ran into an unexpected hiccup.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216815&d=1753561338

The chin spoiler doesn't clear the end of the trailer. At the last minute I had my wife come out and eyeball it as I got near the end. She gave me a pretty confident "it won't clear."

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216816&d=1753561519

It's fine for now, it comes off but after paint it might not. The other option is to put some sort of wheel block to raise the front end. For now I will just leave it off until I am done towing it all over town. The Toy hauler is new, hard to find and about double the rental price, but definitely an option.

I got to the scales. Where I live the closest one is a recycling center in Schenectady. Funny thing was 3 people asked me why I was throwing it away, one of them offered to buy it. :)

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216817&d=1753561519

Just like last time they all came out and gave me a thumbs up when I rolled on to it. Also didn't charge me anything. She came in a full 120 lbs heavier than my last one. I am the proud parent of a 2340 lb baby girl.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=216818&d=1753561570

I then finished my car prep, thanks to my friend Joel, I borrowed his padded visor covers he used on his build. You can see that my "defroster" vents are in and I used a little double sided tape to mount the side mirror. I have completed the initial application paper work and will send it off to Albany first thing Monday morning.

I'm actually surprised that you got all the way to the front before realizing that it wouldn't clear---most times when using the U-Haul trailers the oil cooler scoop will contact or very nearly contact the rearmost crossmember between the ramps unless you raise the tongue of the trailer several inches. Good to hear that the inspection went well!

That's interesting. I don't know this for a fact but it looks like the trailer naturally sits higher on a Tahoe vs a pickup. I wonder if I just got lucky by accidentally sitting high enough. I also have the ride height set pretty high at the moment, right about 5" in the front.

Breaking it back down

I submitted my application for a VIN to NY late last week. I did not hear anything so that is generally a good sign. If they need something clarified they will call. So far so good. I started to pull all the parts off my car that I need powder coated. First is the gas cap. I know a lot of people do this but after searching the forum I could not find a ton of information on how to break it down. So here it is.

After removing the screws underneath to take the upper and lower halves apart. I removed the center plate by removing the screw holding the plate to the main spring. Then I started to look at the hinges. I think what was hanging me up was the copper pins. There are 3 of them. They come out pretty easy. They are all pressed in but require little force to remove them. There is one that is split that houses the spring. I can see that when I put it back together it will require a wind first. Here are all the parts that make up the FFR Lemans cap.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217162&d=1754246008

I then broke down the rest of the parts and laid them all out on the table to keep track

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217163&d=1754246008

Loaded everything in the car and drove it out to my guy. I am trying someone new. He has a great reputation and I have seen his work. It's a bit more expensive than the other people I have been using BUT, he turns things around in a timely manner and will tell you the cost up front. The other place was a little loosey goosey.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217165&d=1754246147

The only downside is he is a 45 min drive from my house. So I get all the way out there and I don't know if you noticed from the picture but I forgot to bring these guys

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217167&d=1754246185

So my 1 1/2 hour round trip turned into a 3 hour odyssey. Not even the dumbest thing I did that day but I digress.

Anyhow, now that it's stripped down I will take the opportunity to make a few small adjustments and touch up the undercoating where I scratched it up under the nose.

Received approval from the DMV to proceed with the inspection stage of the registration. What happens now is I send off a request to the State Troopers to do a salvage inspection. This is a layup as what they look for the serial number on the frame, engine and transmission. All were purchased brand new and I have receipts. This step can get dicey if you say used a junk yard engine that had a VIN stamp of a vehicle listed as stolen for example. In my case this is a formality.

They will assign me a VIN and attach it to the frame. I will send that application off tonight.

I got my powder coat back (under a week!). The bad news is I never told him not to coat the inside of the windshield frame. I now remember other people posting to watch out for that, but I forgot. The frame doesn't fit correctly and it creates a gap on the bottom corners. He's going to strip them down and re shoot them leaving the inside bare. He's only charging me materials. Really nice gesture considering it's 100% my fault.

This is a new shop for me, a younger guy starting a business. He's got some real nice show pieces, kind of an artist vibe. I definitely recommend if your in the Capitol region. Work was excellent.

I had the sides louvers done in gloss black. I'm not sure what specific powder he used but its silky. The rest is Prismatic Powder stone black. I put a little splash of orange inside the cap.

Powder coated gas cap PSA

As you may or may not yet know the Leman's gas cap comes with 2 different style of screws. All but one are a #8 machine screws that thread directly into the fiberglass body. one of them has the same style head but is a bolt with a nylon lock nut. This is so you can attach the ground strap that comes with the kit. The reason the cap is grounded is so when you fill your car any static electricity runs to ground instead of creating a spark just like your daily driver. Modern cars have a number of other safety features that these do not so grounding them is important. Having said all that I was completing assembly and realized with the cap and screw coated there was no path to ground because I covered them in powder coat. It was not something that occurred to me before hand.

To fix this I pulled the powder coated bolt and replaced it with an uncoated one. I painted the top of it and left the bottom naked metal. I then cleaned the power coat out of the holed it sits in (in the pic the one in the back by the hinge). I ran the ground strap to one of the bolts holding my vent filter to the chassis. Once re assembled I checked resistance to ground to the chassis and filler neck. From the inside of the cap where the nozzle goes there is less than 1 ohm.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217621&d=1755290343

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217622&d=1755290343

Just something to think about if you chose to coat your cap as many of us do.

The rest

I then re attached my rear quick jacks and also took the opportunity to "center" my backup camera. I had originally placed it based on the measured center of the car. Don't do that.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217624&d=1755290389

I got the front splash guards in. I am hoping to put 1000 miles on before paint so I am going to need them.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217625&d=1755290389

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217628&d=1755290584

Last is the exhaust hangers. Again since I am driving in gel coat I need them on. One thing that has bee weird about this build has been the exhaust fitment. I used headers with cats so there is no adjustment like the open ones with the ball flange. My pipes both sit wide at the point of connection and were splayed out away from the body like a V. I needed to use wedges to bring them in parallel to the body which brought them out a little wider still.

I am using the single point of attachment method as my last pipes tore a bit over time. That way it hinges and creates forgiveness.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217626&d=1755290437

BUT because my pipes sit a bit wider the stock setup doesn't quite fit. My solution for now was to move the hole on the bracket back. I needed this modification on both sides. I may fabricate my own custom bracket in the future but this is what I am doing for now.

Windshield take 2

When I got my windshield frame back. He did a great job. Blew out the inside channel and then fogged the edge before curing. Really looks good. Best part is everything fits together correctly. While I was trying to make it fit before I figured what the problem was one of the brass corner brackets broke (doh). It's a fragile little bugger. I purchased a piece of galvanized steal and fabricated a new one.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217724&d=1755562834

It ended up being a touch too thick so I "planned" it down with a die grinder. SS would be the better move if I was to do it again.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217725&d=1755562834

It worked well and it came back together correctly

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=217726&d=1755562834

Re installed and added the visors, wind wings and the Breeze masterpiece of a rear view mirror. I have some plans when I break her back down for paint. I am definitely going to tint the wind wings to match the visors. I will also clean up the rest of the hardware so it matches. Just waiting to hear back from the state for my salvage inspection and she's basically ready to go (need to finish the passenger exhaust hanger).

Lookin like a Hot Rod now.

Quick registration update, I sent my packet off to the Salvage Division. They do the physical inspection on my "home made vehicle". Once complete they assign a VIN and I can then register the car. Unfortunately my date isn't until Sept 23rd. I called today to see if I could slide into an earlier opening but because the way this process works they need time for my application paperwork to physically make it's way to the inspection station. Because of this I just have to wait.

Bummer

I have been taking some liberty's with driving it. Probably more than I should but it runs really smooth. After mounting the side pipe hangers I get quit a bit more metallic popping with the heat cycles than I did on my last build. Nothing serious, just pops a little during the heat up and again on cool down. I am guessing the one piece rigid headers are the difference. The Coyote is a marvel compared to my Sniper controlled SBF. It putters around at parade speed with ease but just pulls like crazy when I ask it too. The best part being it so easily finds idle after. Just immediately finds 800 RPMs. The speedo is pretty far off. I don't want to drive it more than around the block so it will have to wait to calibrate it but it thinks I am going 110 mph when I am doing 40 so the miles are adding up. lol

The body definitely has settled bit. The drivers door sticks a little after a few runs. I am not going to touch a thing unless I absolutely have to. I want to leave as much material on the body as possible for Jeff to work with. I am hoping to get her out regularly through the end of the month till mid November. Once Thanksgiving hits that will be it.

At that point it will be winter again. Hoping to have her off to paint. I have a few house projects to get checked off the honey do list as well as another potential car project. Will just have to see how it goes.

I took delivery right about a year ago. I lost about 6 weeks this winter with my engine woes and I should have gotten my paperwork in earlier. So that is to say if you have an unhealthy obsession with being in the garage and an angelically tolerant wife you can bang one of these out in a calendar year. :)

Thank you for sharing that! It helps validate my thinking. The LS in that thing sounds amazing. I’ll bet it’s almost un drivable with that super charger. Blueprints LS3 comes “stock” with 520 HP. Guessing that’s why the current owner only put 800 miles in it.

I have an LS itch I’m going to need to scratch at some point.

No unfortunately it's just sitting in the garage under a cover. I have 2 more weeks until my appointment so there is just nothing for me to do. I can't legally drive it and there really isn't anything to work on. I am watching it get slowly cooler every day. lol

I have no plans to auto cross it right now but you never know

I did a thing

I still have a couple weeks still until I get my inspection ("mom, are we there yet?"), the VIN and can register the car.

Before I pulled the trigger on the second MK4 I was considering all my options. My first thought was to build a GT40. I came pretty close but it's a significant upgrade in budget and I am just not ready for that investment yet. I thought about the coupe but that is not for me. I also came pretty close to building a 35 hotrod pickup. I had put a concept together and a build plan. I dry ran the order and when push came to shove I really wanted another roadster, so the idea was shelved.

As it turns out I have been keeping in touch with the gentlemen that bought my MK4. We have been talking on and off for several months about me building a hotrod pickup for him. Things have accelerated and as of a few days ago a kit and engine has been ordered. He gave me express permission to start a build thread and share the basic details of the arrangement. I am VERY excited for the opportunity and look forward to the prospect of continuing to create new things.

I will start a build thread over there but the basics are an LS based power plant with a TKX and big open wheel concept. If all goes well it will be outrageous.

Make sure you cover yourself legally. I'd love to build cars for people, but the liability scares me a bit. I'd talk to Kleiner and Everson about how they protect themselves when they build for people.

For example, let's say you use Wilwood MCs, and one fails after he takes delivery, and gets hurt. He's likely going after they guy who built the car, AND Wilwood. Maybe open an LLC and sell the car to him through it, and not through you personally.

I've done work for other people before, I built one of the first Jr Dragsters way back. But TBH, I really struggle with motivation when it's someone else's car. To me cars are a fun hobby, it's why I never worked in the industry. If I worked in it I know it wouldn't be fun for me anymore. That's just me. Mike, I have had the same thoughts. Either this feels like a job then I would then be duty bound to finish her up because I made a commitment but would at the end feel like I wouldn't want to do it again. Or I get the same joy out of the build process but it does not put downward pressure on our family budget. I am really hoping for the latter. The end of this build completely snuck up on me. I was humming along and then BANG I was done. This came at a good time.

I am elbows deep into the planning. I'm really pumped

I still have some work to do on this car obviously. I purchased some black vinyl sheet and bulb seal. After paint I plan to put wheel well liners in. I like how it completes the look. It will be weird having two build threads going at the same time. It's a little bonkers.

I went out to do a few odds and ends on my build last night and found the battery to be dead again (3.3 volts, YIKES). I thought I had a bad unit (maybe I did) but I definitely don't have two. I did the troubleshooting and found that my problem was coming from the ignition circuit. When I test I have oscillating current from 48 to 72 milliamps. This is way to high. I connected my Digital Guard Dawg to the ignition wires on the RF harness with a high current weather pack so that made isolating it a lot easier. Sure enough when I disconnect it my draw drops to 9 milliamps. 8 of these are my parking brake.

So what to do. I have to live with it for now because I have to drive this thing to my pre scheduled appointments and I really need to drive it before the weather turns so I can shake it down. After I get it registered next week I think I am going to pull it and temporarily re install the key switch. The easiest thing to do will be to pre wire the switch to another weather pack and just plug it in for an easy conversion. I called DGD and they said I should never see more than 12 milliamps. They said to send it in and they will look at it. I have the key to push button and just to make sure the unit wasn't more "awake" because of the key, I moved both of them into the house. Still acts the same.

I did a search but only found one thread where anyone had this problem and it was never updated. Question, has anyone else seen this and has anyone just for fun measured their draw to see what is normal?

Hi Jesse. That's a bummer. FWIW, I did not have that issue with my DGD. I don't know what its amp draw was, but obviously, yours is too much. Also, I set mine to manual key mode, because I found my FOB to drain too quickly otherwise. Thankfully, there is an emergency bypass process, and it works (ask me how I know). I'm putting DGD in my Coupe build as well. Not so much for security, but mostly because I like the convenience of the FOB.

2 months is about right, mine drops off a cliff somewhere between 6-8 weeks. IMO the car should be able to sit undriven for 60 days without an issue. I am going to put a push button inline switch to the 12v that feeds the ignition, change my key fob to passive and that will be it I think. That way I sit in the car, turn on the "power" button. The ignition wakes up, sees the key fob and I am immediately ready to start. This will drop my daily draw to under 10 milliamps. This should be fine during the driving season. I am also going to put a battery cutoff switch at the terminal for winter storage. The reason for the second switch just to the ignition and not what Mike did is I have an analog clock I don't want to reset every time I drive it. Once done (fingers crossed I don't make any new problems working behind the dash) I will document it all here.

Parasitic Draw Solution

So to tackle my energy hungry ignition system I needed to a way to get it off the battery. I am not prepared to pull it out. I have a DMV appointment on Tuesday and then maybe 6 weeks of driving weather. I am willing to sacrifice none of it. Mike had a the same problem and used a cutoff switch. My only issue with that is I have an analog clock in my dash and have no interest in resetting it every time I drive. Also to put this in context. I am losing 72 milliamps, so i am in no danger of the car not working day to day but if stored 2 months it definitely can be. If I remove the ignition from the circuit I draw 12 milliamps. This is perfectly acceptable for long periods of time.

When I connected the DGD to the RF harness I used a weather pack connection. So what I want is the ability to kill just the 12v hot going to the DGD. I created this to plug in between the existing harness and you can see I have a latching push button switch rated to 30amps.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219115&d=1758408834

I took out the brace I made for the dash under the steering wheel and mounted it.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219117&d=1758408874

The beauty of this setup is I changed my RFID tag to passive mode. I can leave it in my pocket, sit down, press my "secret" button and the system powers up and disarms. I then simply start the car. I can also just leave the switch closed and for daily use. But if say I am not going to drive it for the week (or month) I can shut it back off. It's not the perfect solution but it's the one I am going with.

https://youtu.be/0Evm8tj8XR4?si=q1RQ6ElKPSuErgV7

Also since I am working on power disconnects. I wanted a disconnect switch but I had over thought the whole thing and had to back out of it. I found this item so I went ahead and installed it. I don't expect to use it a lot but it is nice to be able to kill the battery without wrenches. Like say the car is sitting for a couple of months over the winter somewhere in the Midwest while the body is getting painted. :)

I kind of agree. My true back out plan is to pull all of it out and put a regular ignition switch where the push button start is. I wanted something very specific with this build and a traditional key works against it but I won't hesitate if this turns into a hassle.

I think I am ok for now though.

I originally thought that a cutoff switch was cool and a nice 'safety' feature, but I wouldn't use it that much. I was definitely wrong. I've used it many times working on the build and for maintenance. It's so nice to be able to turn a switch versus disconnecting the battery cable.

Whenever you dig around on the inside of your dash it's good idea to test everything to make sure you didn't accidentally disconnect anything. All was well until I tested my wipers. They cycled once then got jammed up at the half way point. I took a look and found the center section of tubing had failed.

A little quick background. The FFR wiper kit comes with SS tubing. I had no trouble the first time but the second time I installed these wipers I ever so subtly kinked the tube. This malformed the tubing just enough to keep the cable from freely moving back and fourth. I ended up purchasing a piece of 5/8 brake line at the hardware store. This is easy to manipulate and worked fine BUT I don't own a flaring tool. I really didn't see why that would be an issue until yesterday.

As you can see here what happened was the cable caught the end of the tubing and pulled it out of the wheel box. I should have taken a picture but I started taking it apart right away. You can see the end of the tube here.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219136&d=1758475755

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219135&d=1758475755

Well, I probably need to order some SS tubing and either borrow or purchase a flare tool. If the end is flared it prevents the cable from catching it. Live and learn.

Now I have a vehicle inspection in 48 hours. What to do. I found some 3/8 clear poly hose 1/4ID. This was cheap, available and fit so this will get me through. After installing it and interesting thing happened. It not only worked but the wipers got a lot quieter. I have to play around with it some more but I may just do this. I would like to see if it holds up over time but man it's so easy to install.

We're legal

My had my scheduled appointment with the "field investigation unit". NY uses the salvage inspection system to issue home built vehicles VIN numbers. I got lucky and pulled the first appointment of the morning. I was getting a little squirrelly as we had rain forecast for mid morning. We hadn't had any in weeks so of course. NY has a tough reputation for having an over complicated bureaucracy but I have to say everyone in the home built vehicle business has been easy to deal with. We got there, they fellas came out to say hi and I drove her in for the inspection that took all of 15 minutes. NICE!

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219279&d=1758662327

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219278&d=1758662327

They gave me a VIN and my signed paper work and I was on my way. I got home and within 10 seconds of getting her back in the garage it started to poor. NICE!

I returned the Uhaul and the rain let up by 11:00. The next step in the NY state process is you have to wait for some paperwork and get your annual inspection done just like any other car in the state. Ordinarily you have 10 days from registration to do this but because it's home built I had to do it first. I called office that I sends that paperwork to see if I could pick it up in person instead of waiting for the mail and he said he would email it to me. NICE!

There is a gas station up the street and I asked if I could make an appointment later in the week. The lady that owns the service station with her husband said sure and we got to talking about the car. The rain let up and she said if I get it over to her "right now" they could squeeze me in. NICE!

So I call the insurance company (Hagerty) and convert my zero mile policy to a 5k miles a year driving policy and update the VIN. I got 50k in guaranteed valuation for $400/year. NICE!

Now I'm on a heater, time to push my luck. I print up the paperwork and head on over to the DMV and see what happens. This HAS TO BE where my luck runs out right? I mean.... how could it not. I get to the window and tell the nice lady I would like to register my home built vehicle and she looks at me and says "sorry, what now?". There it is, knew it couldn't last. I showed her what I had and assured her I had done it before, she got her supervisor and it turned out he had done a couple before too. He said he would walk her through it and it's not a big deal. NICE!

The best part is she is looking at my license and recognizes my address. She said her nephew lives on the same street. Turns out her nephew is my next door neighbor and we had even previously met at their housewarming party when they first moved in 2 years ago NICE!

So then she hands me my new plates and chuckles and says I should get a frame that says "party like it's....

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219281&d=1758662388

Honestly not the worst idea. So I pulled an inside straight. Took the day off of work because I had the inspection appointment and managed to squeeze about 4 days worth of paperwork and inspections into 2 hours and we are on the road! NICE!

It's good to have friends

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The weather has been spectacular this weekend and I have a couple hundred miles under my belt now. It been great. I'm really glad I am driving in gel coat. It's the best way to shake it down. Things I discovered so far that needed attention:

1. Clutch was too tight, let it out and it hooks up real nice now. HOWEVER I get the strangest squeal in the clutch pedal. To my ear is sounds like the the pivot on the pedal needs lube but I can't be sure. It's a little odd. It comes and goes

2. Shift boot. I purchased a shift boot from Redline Goods. I used the Factory Five template but the hole on top is cut for the stock shifter. The coyote shifter is thicker. So I cut it and tucked it back inside. This doesn't really work for a number of reasons. I ordered another one and modified the top hole to 1 inch. I cut the top off the rubber shift boot and use it as a "gasket" to keep the heat out. I will share pics when my new boot shows up in a few weeks.

3. Seats - it did not occur to me that the seats might not be that comfortable but it might be the price you pay for buying custom seats overseas. I am going to play with seat angles this week and see if that improves it but my wife and I talked about it on our ride today, and I think what the real solution is when I pull the seats out this winter I am going to have the bottoms re done. Needs double the cushion.

4. ALIGNMENT

My friend Scott reached out to congratulate me on being legal and to tell me he had all the stuff at his place to do an alignment. I took him up on his offer. He said to plan on being there all day and he wasn't kidding. Home alignments are not for the faint of heart. Its extra hard without a lift because of access but we did manage to get it done. We started at 9:00 and finished at 4:00. We did walk up to the diner and grab lunch in there too.

The best part was the digital level kept resetting itself as the battery's were going so we chased our tails for a while until we figured it out. One time because we were both tired we set the camber to the prescribed -5 degrees. When I stepped back and looked the wheel looked like it had been in an accident. We couldn't figure out where we went wrong until Scott looked at me and said "wait, 5 degrees or .5 degrees"? I should have taken a picture. The best news is we got it done, took it for a test drive and the car drives fantastic. Straight as an arrow.

I can't thank Scott enough, that was a long day. I really appreciate it.

It's good to have friends

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The weather has been spectacular this weekend and I have a couple hundred miles under my belt now. It been great. I'm already glad I am driving in gel coat.

Great to get an update. Glad you are getting out there and enjoying it with your better half.

The DIY alignment turned out to be one of the most satisfying parts of my MK4 build, and not a small learning experience. The proof is in how it drives. Way to go!

Suspension Travel

OK so as pointed out in this build thread one of the challenges of beefing up my wheel stance is suspension travel. Obviously I can't have the wheels bottoming out on the body. So what to do. First thing is I set the ride height where I wanted it. I found a happy medium between clearance and looks. Once it was set then it was on to the "test track". My findings were that for normal driving, turning and braking (even spirited) the wheels clear without issue. HOWEVER whenever I hit a big bump or dip the wheel touches. I can tell because it leaves a mark on the tire, you can hear it when it rubs and it smells like burnt rubber for a second afterwards.

My solution is to first determine where the "bottom" is in the suspension travel. This was pretty easy, I jacked the car off the ground, loosened the coil over spring, pulled the bumps stop all the way down and then jacked the wheel up until it makes contact. I did this for all 4 wheels. My feeling is if I clear the body as is I have some buffer after paint as there is nearly a 1/2 of material that will be removed from the lip of the fender.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219955&d=1760037470

The bump stop marked where I had to limit the travel.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219950&d=1760037389

If you put a hard limiter in the coil over when you reach it, it will will be jarring. I want a "soft landing". I purchased a set of performance bump stops from Professional Awesome. They produce a number of different models for racing. I went with a taller unit that is probably designed for long travel off road because it will take longer to reach a hard limit. They make a shorter unit but I am starting here.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219954&d=1760037435

I pulled the coil apart and installed the new bump stop along with a fender washer and a 14mm two piece clamp to set the height. This way I can also make adjustments if I need to and even remove it.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219951&d=1760037389

By my math the bottom of the fattest part of the bump stop is at my limit. I re installed all 4 corners. I marked the coil height before I took them out and reset everything back.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219953&d=1760037435

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219952&d=1760037435

I went out for an extended and dare I say aggressive ride today. I hit all the bumpiest roads and turned and broke as hard as I was comfortable. I have to say I may have stumbled onto something here. Not only did it work (no contact detected) I may have improved the ride somehow. It was very smooth almost felt like I had sway bars installed ( I don't). The early results are very promising.

I also stamped my VIN into the data plate and mounted it in the engine bay.

Those bump stops do look like they'd give a nice ride. Are they hard rubber like a poly mount or on the softer side?

They are definitely a polymer. These have a progressive design so they engage gradually. I went this route because it’s all entirely reversible. I plan to keep it as is but for resale or if I wanted a lower profile down the road these can be adjusted or reversed with a different set of wheels and it’s a totally different car.

Make sure you tighten the piston rod thread tightly in the rod-end. I had one unscrew and damage the thread.

Good advice as always. I brought them down until they bottomed out, used blue loctite and tightend the jam nut. Appreciate you looking out.

I did a little data logging. I have a rural spot that's good for doing pulls. I ripped 3rd gear to 7k rpm. The continuous torque of the Coyote is really impressive. But I glanced down when letting off the pedal and I was doing 110 mph. I then suddenly was struck that I personally assembled this thing and am I sure I shouldn't double check all my connections before doing this again. We are building rocket ships

Should be respected accordingly

Seat Alignment

One of the things that I found disappointing in my initial tests is the seats. My tail bone was getting directly pushed on. I bought the seats because they look so good. Others have used them and I never picked up any complaints so I figured I would pull the seats when I shut her down for the winter and have the seat cushions re done. Maybe double the padding? It never really thought about the seat angle. One of the other things I struggled with is under my right leg there was no support. So when operating the pedal my leg would get a little stiff. I had none of these issues in my last Roadster. It hit me those seats had a pretty decent tilt back to them. Breeze mounts (which are a very popular item around here) also tip them back quite a bit.

So I decided to make some changes and see if it improved things.

I had purchased these spacers from RE Suspension. They were going to be for the bump stops but quickly pivoted away from a solid travel limiter. They are 1 inch and fit perfectly under my seat sliders.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220233&d=1760575283

This gave me a considerable lift in the front.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220235&d=1760575283

I am not sure if the picture picks up the difference but this is the drivers side tilted 1 1/4 inch and the passenger 1/2 inch.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220237&d=1760575337

This is both

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220238&d=1760575337

I have to say this is night and day. I don't think at this point I need to do anything to the seats. The angle made all the difference. We will see how they do on longer rides (I could still maybe beef up the padding) but so far so good.

Engine Tune

I data logged last week and did a couple of full throated pulls. In my limited Coyote experience so far I find it opposite of my SBF in a few key ways. Mostly my 306 was snappy at the lower RPMs but petered out around 5200 rpm. It got louder but ran out of pull. This one is fairly tame under 3000 RPM but pulls really hard all the way through 7200 rpm. There doesn't seem to be any drop off at all. I really like it. I used Juggernaut Tuning and I have to say I cannot say enough good things about them. They charged me all of $300 and have engaged with me off an on since March. I hadn't had any contact with them since April because I couldn't get out for a proper drive and sent them the new file. They picked it up where they left off and made another set of adjustments at no additional charge. The engine runs flawlessly. My only complaint was it cold idled too high for my liking. They tuned it down and now it hums at about 1100 RPM until it warms up and then drops to 800.

They have sent me 3 different tunes and been very responsive. I know people like Lund but if you want to spend a little less I highly recommend these guys.

Exhaust Cover

I needed to do something about the heat from the side pipes. I think I want side shields and I may even have identified which ones but I don't want to do it until after paint. I purchased this exhaust wrap way back before my first build was delivered. I never used it. I found it in the garage and decided to give it a try. I secured it with a couple of stainless steel zip ties. I got the idea from another builder.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220364&d=1760817073

It sort of fits the whole rat rod look of an unfinished car. We got out for a longer ride, I think I have about 350 miles so far. My buddy bought a fixer upper out in the country. We drove the hour out and she still handles great. I need to tweak the rear suspension a little. I still get occasional contact on real hard dips. Need to pull the rear shocks and lower the bump stop a 1/4 inch.

A little bling

Starting to think about the finished product. The wheels I bought from Cosmis Racing come with wheel caps that I have not installed yet. I probably wont until the car is done. They come with branded decals that stick to cap. They are fine but I have been thinking on ways to improve them.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220365&d=1760817109

I've been playing around with different designs and I settled on this. I used carstickers.com and had 10 of these made.

Shift Boot

Full disclosure, I am actually on my 3rd shift boot. I used a company called Redline Goods. They do custom shift and brake boots. They also do transmission tunnel covers now too. They can do almost anything for any car but have a specific selection for Factory Five. My first go at this I picked a boot shape for an Audi TT. It did not occur to me until it arrived that it might not fit. The base was too narrow for the hole at the bottom - Doh

I ordered a 2nd one and just used the FFR like I did on my first build. Welp after that arrived I had a new problem. You can see on my firs car the pattern they used is meant for the 427 shifter which is quite narrow at the top.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=167634&d=1654295828

I am using the Coyote shifter this time. It is both wider and rectangle so it doesn't fit - Doh. Not to be discouraged I cut the top and tucked it back under. I thought this would work but it was too short now and heat leaking through was a real problem. Also it started to come apart so I bit the bullet, temporarily zip tied it and ordered a 3rd one.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220683&d=1761359338

This time I used the FFR selection but modified the hole at the top to 1". I think depending on the look your going for I would also shorten it 1 or 2 inches. Good news is they will customize it anyway you want and it's quite reasonably priced. I think I paid $60 delivered.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220682&d=1761359338

Since the top hole is a little oversized I used the rubber shift boot that came with the kit as a gasket. I cut the top off and slid it over the shaft like so. Although after this picture was taken it sits much higher on the shaft but you get the point.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=220684&d=1761359383

So this is it for now. I have the option of transitioning to the tucked look (not really my preference) or I could take the plunge a 4th time. lol. I will likely just leave it as is. I also graduated to a 2nd stripe. I like the look a little better.

500 Mile report

I was sure I was going to be able to get 1500 miles on her before the weather shut me down but I also thought I would get registered before October. I have been able to make the most of it though. I had some learning to do with the transmission. I was sure there was a problem because I would intermittently grind in reverse before I figured out there isn't a synchro for reverse. Found some old threads and realized it wasn't a problem at all.

I have enough miles where I have been able to get fairly aggressive and again so far so good. She tracks in a straight line thanks to my friend Scott. The seats while much improved with the tilt I put on them I am still going to have the bottom cushion re done. The weather was fantastic today but we are taking a turn this week. I doubt I will be able to get out much more.

I have no oil leaks but I do find there is a little sheen that has shown up on the pan. Not enough to pool or drip but a little bit is seeping out somewhere. I am glad i had time to drive in gel coat, it really does give you a lot of freedom to make adjustments.

It handles even better than my last one. We hit the twisties pretty hard today and it feels like it would drive upside down. I need to change the oil and check for any debris. All in all I have been pleased.

On a personal note my wife and I just got back from San Antonio TX (what an incredible city by the way) to see our daughter graduate from Air Force basic training. It was 55 today in KC, but tomorrow night, we're supposed to hit 19 degrees. And you're right, San Antonio is a great town and the Air Force does know how to use real estate. Seat Slider Mounts

I have spent months thinking about how I wanted to mount my seats. One of the genius aspects of the Breeze mounts is how they are assembled. Rivnuts on the mounting plate that allows you to remove the seat without having to do anything crazy. With this in mind I applied the same idea to the sliders. Once I mocked everything up and decided how much tilt I wanted I marked everything up and started drilling.

I drilled holes in the upper slider big enough to mount 8mm rivnuts

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211721&d=1742601702

In my mind the best way to do this is to mount them to the seat first. I used button head 8mm bolts and a series of washers to create a little front lift

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211722&d=1742601702

This worked really well. I do need to get longer bolts for final assembly. I would like them to go the length of the rivnut.

I modified the pull handle with a tube bender to narrow it and cut the ends to shorten it. I wanted a double locker in case of a track day.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211723&d=1742601702

This will make removing the seats pretty easy going forward

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211724&d=1742601746

Next is mounting to the seat pan but this is how it sits and it makes for a very comfortable seating position

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211725&d=1742601746

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=211727&d=1742601793

How far apart did you end up center-to-center on the rails and did you manage to hit the plate underneath on all bolts?
I have Stoneleighs coming in the new year and like your mount process how you kept it simple and your future proofing for ease of seat removal.

Yes sir. This is the only place that carries them anymore. Albany County Fasteners used to, but no longer.

I used the FFR seat slider install instructions as a template. I will have to measure to get that info for you. Unfortunately my car is being stored away offsite at the moment. I will be seeing it in a week or 2 and get measurement then. Hopefully won’t be too late for you.

I found 8-32 button head black chrome at Zoro. I just ordered 3 packs. Chad you weren't kidding about being pricey but probably worth it. Black oxide will rust.

Forgot about Zoro. I think I've ordered a couple of things from there but they were a bit expensive, even by black chrome standards. Here's the 8-32 black chrome from Fastenerline. About $12 cheaper per box of 10. Unfortunately, they are out of stock. DOH!!

Hey Jesse,
I just wanted to say thank you for posting so many pictures of you build. I’m working on the inside wall for the driver side foot box and have been having a hell of a time with it. I’ve been reading your thread the past couple days and have gotten some great knowledge on how to line it up. A lot of the pictures I was able to go off of weren’t necessarily even having to do with the paneling either. I’ve thought to myself with all the pictures I post on my thread if I’m overdoing it but like myself, maybe there is someone out there that may catch some helpful hint in the background. I just tackled the inside wall tonight and am very happy with the results thanks to you and a bunch of others on this forum. By the way you have done an amazing job with that car and I’m totally wowed by all the detailed and custom work that’s gone into it.

Thank you for the kind words. I am pleased to hear that you found it helpful. I had the same experience as you since I started doing this. If it were not for all the detailed build threads my builds would turn out a lot different.

I genuinely appreciate the offer but I received them last night. For the record the black part of "black chrome" is maybe a bit of a stretch. More of a dark titanium grey, which for my application may end up being perfect.

Definitely depends on the angle. The same vendor also has black stainless steel button heads too. They look to be more powder coated. Definitely not black oxide. I used them in the cockpit and around the car.

Colors, colors and more colors!

My car is in storage for the winter (or at least until I get the call to bring it to Jeff). I had pretty much decided what my scheme was going to be then I was given too much time to think about it.

I have "narrowed" it down to 3 basic schemes (all be it in several variations). I decided to post where I am at and have a little fun with it. My plan is to fit the hood with a carbon fiber hood scoop. Whatever the center color between the stripes ends up being that will get carried over to the scoop. The rest will stay exposed CF sealed up with a clear coat. I also bit the bullet and purchased black chrome button head screws that will blend with the CF scoop nicely. I continued to use Copilot and it does a really decent job. You get some variation (sometimes it picks up the chin spoiler and sometimes it doesn't for example) and sometimes it struggles with fine tuning or adding pin stripes so I used MS Paint to fill in on a few but here is where I am at.

Original Chevy amplify orange. (still kind of my favorite)

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=223656&d=1767719519

Lamborghini Titanium Grey (can be an number of other codes. I like this shade though). These are the safest choices and would give me the best resale opportunities IMO

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=223654&d=1767719519

I then get into the blue, blue/green stuff. This is where I thought I had landed. I like Jeep bikini pearl, the AI doesn't quite get it right. A little more green and too light in this photo but you get the idea

The AI is doing some strange/stupid/silly stuff with the scoop and stripes. I guess you're asking for opinions so here we go ;)

Multiple widths of the third color outside of and between the main stripes are waaaay too busy. The cars just aren't big enough to carry all that off. Do 'em like this:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=223666&d=1767730376

My vote still goes to the Jeep Bikini Pearl, code PPT (note that there is also a Jeep Bikini Metallic, code PPE---they are NOT the same). You're right; AI doesn't get that right. Here's a more accurate representation:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=223667&d=1767730403

As for "the safest choices and would give me the best resale opportunities", that kind of went out the window when you went for blackout wheels and trim, carbon fiber, chin spoilers and and tall seats! You want safe and the best resale opportunities I have 2 words for you..."Guardsman" and Wimbledon" :p

You could probably hear that orange before you see it, so of course I like it. A good cartoon color for a cartoon car. Colors like Titanium Gray seem to me like trying to make it a luxury car when a Cobra is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

FWIW, I've had a couple of orange cars & trucks and while I loved them I found orange was a bit like yellow, people either love it or hate it. And more hated it than loved it so selling was difficult. I like orange but my wife hates it. Not sure why, maybe because she's from Oklahoma and Texas usually whips them in the Cotton Bowl?

Thanks Jeff, If I go the blue/green route the Jeep is still my favorite. As far as the stripe spacing and whatnot that's just the limitations of the AI. I had always intended on traditional spacing. This little exercise is really just an inexpensive way to play with the color combinations.

The resale point is a fair one. Like I said, I may just have too much time to think about it.

That Bikini Pearl with black stripes and orange pins would be cool. The Titanium Grey with black stripes and orange pins is also nice. The blue/green stuff and you're starting to look like a Miami Dolphins show car.

I think you have to accent a bright color like orange with a darker offset unless you just go balls deep with the orange body. I think about resale as well but go with what you love. Just my 2....

That reminds me of a quote from a friend of mine.
"Marriage is all about compromise. My wife wanted a cat. I did not want a cat. So we compromised. We got a cat"

I have a feeling you're right about this, and may have no say in the color of our car when it comes time for that decision. I'm ok with that, she's an artist and has a great eye for color.

Mike I have been giving you cartoon comment some thought and that resonates with me. To Jeff's point go big or go home is what I have been going for so no reason to stop now. The wife and I have agreed to boil it down to a 2 horse race. To help I found some side and rear pics. These are incomplete but fills out how they would look. I was able to weed out the grey with this exercise. I like the 2 loudest combo's the best.

Now you're talking my language! I wanted red but my wife loves blue. Well, a blue Cobra isn't a bad thing but we did agree that boring old Guards blue wasn't going to cut it. We did a ton of spray outs and ended up with a beautiful candy blue over a silver base. A blue you hear before you see. I'm pretty sure there's not been a single person looking at our car that hasn't commented on the color.

Feel free to disagree with me! My powers of persuasion regarding colors are usually pretty good and most of the time I'm able to talk guys out of doing colors that I don't really love but I have still painted a couple that I didn't care for. Now, if somebody was about to do something really stupid I might draw the line... As my good friend Ron Everitt said to my other good buddy Tak when he built his roadster..."Nice car. Don't phuck it up by painting it some stupid color" :)

Quickjack and New Wheels

I have been a quickjack lurker for quite a while. I don't have room for a proper lift and putting the MK4 on 4 jack stands is SKETCHY at best. I have to lift the front, put the stands in, then lever the whole car up to get the back up. I hate it! I had one of the fronts started to rock out and and I had to hit it with a dead blow to get it to sit square. That was it. I need a new system.

I purchased the 6000TL (this replaces the 5000TL). My daily drivers are not that heavy but I help friends with their stuff so it's nice to be able to accommodate. The only real downside is the bleeder setup is not well thought out. You have to make a mess by design. Best just to do it then clean up. It has an allen head bolt instead of proper nipple. It gets everywhere.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225766&d=1771373007

First thing is I have to get my car out of storage. I almost drove it home, would have been epic but I can't with the salt so trailer it is.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225761&d=1771372916

Now why bring my car back to the garage just to lift it up on my new lift you ask? Well I got new wheels! I was able to drive quit a bit before tucking her away. Greg from KC mentioned with my front wheels poking out as wide as they are I might be tearing up my paint. I think he might be right. The other thing is I think with the front spoiler I want the car to ride lower. I think I have 2 looks working against each other so I am going to tuck the wheels back in and lower the body down quite a bit.

First I have to take the spacer out. I cut the studs and need to replace them. Paul gave me the PN for the Dorman part and they worked out great. I found a cheap tool I got on Amazon that's tapered for a lug nut and has a bearing. The manual has you do it all wrong. With an impact wrench they went in in seconds. I just popped the old ones out one at a time with a hammer and pulled the new ones in. Took 20 minutes..easy peasy. Hardest part was taking the brakes out and put them back in.

I was able to get the quickjack in where I had the jack stands and lift it clean off. I have to say I am really impressed. It sits SO HIGH. I have always barely fit under the car. This is real treat!

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225767&d=1771373136

I went with a different style of wheel. I was torn when I ordered the first set between a split spoke or solid. I decided to go back to my original look. I think these will work with the color scheme and the body tucked down tight.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225770&d=1771373172

I am keeping the bump stops, just moved them down the shaft and will lower the ride height after paint as it barely clears a Uhaul trailer as it is right now.

What are you using for lift points with the Quick Jack system?

I may have missed it in your build thread but did you wrap the side pipes with some fabric? I noticed the band clamp.

I have it on the 4 inch tube for now. it was the best way to get it up with where I had the jack stands. I like the idea of them under the seat pan area better I think. Either way it puts the nose of the car about chest height which is awesome.

I did use a Kevlar wrap with SS zip ties. This is a temp solution so I could drive around. I was going to order shields but the company I was going to order from isn't taking orders anymore. Another lesson of these builds is a lot of vendors are boutique businesses. If you wait to buy something sometimes it's no longer available. I should have jumped at it.

So happy that you pulled those wheels in! I was pretty sure they were going to be a problem even with the ride height jacked up ;)

Chin Spoiler Gasket

I've been trying to figure out if I am going to make the front spoiler removable or not. My preference is yes, for no other reason than getting it on an off a trailer. The other option is to have it permanently attached and don't worry about the paint underneath.

If you look at some of the photos of the Backdraft spoilers on finished cars there seems to be a gasket material. I figured I would start there so I gave them a call. They told me they use "B601700 fender beading". I had not actual idea what that was but a quick google search and I was on my way. I ordered a roll

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225800&d=1771462838

It's a soft rubber and very pliable. I cut some strip and marked where the screw holes line up. I also laid out a rubber washer on the 2 bottom bolts. This should give my non abrasive points of contact.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225801&d=1771462838

I installed it long then used a hobby knife to cut it to length. I like the way it looks. I think this is the route I will go.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225802&d=1771462838

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225803&d=1771463048

The only change I have to make is the titanium screws I used on the top are 20mm in length and now too short with the rubber gasket. I ordered 30mm screws to replace them. I think I will also add one more screw to each side.

I'm not clear it will make all those bends cleanly. It will also need more bolts to hold it in place or some sort of adhesive. I'm still playing with it. I have had similar thoughts though.

Is it rubber or plastic? I wonder if you could heat it up a bit to deform it around the oil cooler chin. I really like the look of this... I might have to borrow it for my build :)

Prep for paint

First thing I did when I ordered this car was call Jeff. I was in line to have him do my first one but the timing didn't work out. So I made sure to get a hold of as soon as I could and we talked about winter 26'. He gave me a call and unfortunately for Jeff he has to get some of his own work done and is unable to do as scheduled. Jeff was gracious as always and said he would be happy to do it but I would need to wait until summer or fall. My initial thought is "no problem", just drive it in gel coat this summer and take to out to Indiana later in the year. This was my plan for a couple weeks until I realized with the truck build I don't really have room for both in my garage. I would need to store the Roadster somewhere else and worse not be able to drive it very often. I called Ron Randall at Metal Morphous in CT (he did my first car) and he had a spot open. So I am going to take it to him on Friday. I think Jeff and I are both a little bummed about it but he is very understanding about the audible. It's on my short list to meet up in person one of these days. I want to thank Jeff for everything he does for this community and my builds specifically.

Now that I am headed to CT I need to prep the car. I stripped about 80% of it. I left the trunk and hood latches as well as the roll bars, windshield and louvers (the assembled units fit differently than the folding ones. I want to make sure the know what to shape it to)

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225928&d=1771799140

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225924&d=1771799052

I pulled the backup camera and tucked it up out of the way.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225925&d=1771799110

I also pulled the Lemans cap. I put a 2" Fernco cap on the filler hose with tin foil as a liner. The rubber will eventually start breaking down from the fuel vapors so best to have something between the fuel and the cap.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225927&d=1771799140

I have everything pulled and tucked away until she comes back.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225922&d=1771799052

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225923&d=1771799052

And last I don't know what the weather is going to be like on the ride out, also it will be in a dusty shop for a few months. No harm in keeping everything protected. I will pull the drivers seat when I get there and bring it home with me. Plan to have some work done to the seat while she's gone. I would like to double the seat cushioning.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225926&d=1771799110

The plan is to drive her out late morning Friday with my buddies. We are going to stay over and have a dads night out. Lots to do out there. Pizza is top of the list. Will be home Saturday afternoon and as of right now scheduled to take possession of the truck engine on Sunday. May even drop it in so I should be back in business on that project soon.

I also received that same call from Jeff, and I totally understand. Fortunately, I have the space to store the Cobra until Fall-ish when Jeff is ready for it, and I have my GT350 to drive, and I'm eying a 2020-2022 GT500 to add to the fleet.

Well...after seeing your first build in person I thought the paint job was pretty incredible! But I can't handle the suspense...what color combination did you go with?

Thanks Jen,

I am going with Jeep Bikini Pearl, black and Chevy Amplify Orange with a bit of a twist. Kind of like this (Jeff will rightly point out the stripes are not to scale but you see where it is headed).

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=223657&d=1767719579

This isn't the right shade, here is a pic of a guy at work that has a dressed up Sarah with a lot of black accents.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=225955&d=1771856702

Instead of painting the scoop to match I am doing something a little different. I have a CF scoop from FFR. It matches the dash completely. I am going to carry the center orange stripe through the scoop but keep the rest exposed carbon fiber. I will then clear over the whole thing. I purchased black chrome button head screws that I will use instead of rivets. That will give it a unique look. Also if I hate it (I doubt I will) it can be repainted relatively easily. It would just need to be reshot in orange and black and it would look traditional.

The last thing up in the air right now is the chin spoiler. I can either carry the color scheme through it (plan A) or perhaps go with a solid black for contrast (plan B for now). I have some time to figure that out.

Off to Paint

If you go back to my first build thread when I took my car off for paint I took this pic then complained that I forgot to take pics of it at Ron's shop.

Well 4 years later I did the exact same thing. I pulled the car into Ron's shop, talked for 45 minutes about what exactly I wanted to do and didn't take a single photo lol. So I will leave you with these.

New Tahoe, new build same journey. The drive was uneventful and Ron was great. He does a lot of Backdraft's in the New Haven area so he is very familiar with the chin spoiler. He gets the assignment. It's looking like early June for completion (give or take) so I will post updates as they arrive. I am also installing hood vents so I am real excited to see how that turns out.

Boys night out in New Haven, started at Frank Pepe's for pizza, went to a few different distilled spirit serving establishments and finished the night at a cigar bar and howled at the moon.

I am very tired but excited to move back onto the truck full time.

New paint colors on the house as well:)

Yeah, that's right. Funny story about the house. My wife and I bought in in 2008, it was a total fixer upper in a great neighborhood. We picked colors that looked a lot like a fall leaf. Burnt orange was the goal. After I got all the really hard to get to places painted we were like "Whoa, that's really orange". I was kind of pissed and had already bought 10 gallons. I ran upstairs and grabbed the color tile and was then like "We got screwed, this isn't even close!"

I took the tile outside and held it against the house it was a perfect match. It looked totally different in the sun. Lesson is your house lives outside, plan your colors accordingly. So we ran with it. Finally after about 10 years it needed a new coat so we changed up the color to something I like to call more "resale-able".

The orange grew on us but I was happy to see it go.

As a retired color matcher there are three rules to understand: 1) ALWAYS look at the color under sunlight. It will look totally different under any other light source. (Hate to say it as I am an old male, but) 2) Female eyes see color better than male eyes 3) Young eyes see color better than old eyes. I was lucky that I had the use of a color booth that had different light sources and a colormatching computer. Without those my colormatching days would have been over a lot sooner!

Seat fix

One of the things I found about my Intatrim seats during my shakedown rides was they are (at least for me) a little thin in the seat. My tail bone would start to hurt after a while. So to address this I found a local upholstery shop to help re work them.

This is how they looked as shipped.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=227775&d=1775335733

Also since I have nothing to do with my MK4 I wanted to make the door straps and accent piece. I tried orange dye and it didn't look right so I went with this orange leather paint. I like it, if it cracks down the road I will re do them and dye them black.

I know that's scientifically true but somehow my wife missed that boat! When I've been building our houses and have wanted her input on color choices for various rooms she was completely the opposite...we'd be look at colors and she'd ask what I thought of something that she selected and invariably I'd say something like "that has too much gray/green/brown/whatever" and she'd look at me like I had 2 heads and ask "where do you see the gray/green/whatever in that?" Maybe it's because of what I do that I'm more tuned into shades and hues whereas she just sees horses :D We decided that when it comes to color she's like the 6 crayon box that they gave us in kindergarten and I'm more like the box of 96---with the built in sharpener!

Yeah it freaked me out the first time but I can’t argue with the results. He’s thinking mid June, I’m fully prepared for it to take longer if need be. There is an annual rally in Lake George 2nd week in July I would love to debut it.

Fun fact, I thought I got one of “those body’s” as you would say but Ron asked me if I had hand picked it because he had t seen one that clean before. I was a little surprised cuz there are def some fitment issues. He was like that stuff is easy to fix but there are zero voids.

It’s funny how a customer and a pro look at these things differently.
