What is the point of the fuel inlet retainer that should get bolted to the fuel tank flange? Is it to hold the inlet pipe IN the tank, so it doesn't slide out at all? In which case I should bend it to have it pushed up against the gasket. Or is it to support the pipe from moving up/down? In which case it should be away from the tank a bit? Or something else?
Thanks

I thought it was to prevent the filler tube from sliding completely out of the tank.
once you get the body on, there will be no up/down movement.

It's for safety. To keep the inlet from coming out in case of an accident. One could argue how really effective it might be in that case. But it's not necessary to have it tight against the gasket. The overall placement of your filler tube, and tied down to the filler cap, should result in the inlet being straight and in the right position.

I'm curious what you guys are talking about— I don't remember that from my build. Any chance someone could show some pictures or point it out in the manual?

Thanks. It looks flunky just just hanging out along the pipe, but I guess if it is to hold it from coming out (it is pretty long) then it will work fine that way. I'll just bolt it up as is.
Thanks

I thought the same when putting mine on Rock. Its maybe 1/8 - 1/4" away from the raised rim on the filler tube and wondered if it should be flush against it, then figured there are 3" of filler tube inside the tank and the bracket is just a stopgap to prevent it from backing out all the way.
interesting thing is I think the photo from the manual is reversed, the tab on my fuel filler pipe retainer was bent in the other direction so I mounted its tab to the frame rail in front of the filler tube with a nutsert.
