Has anyone ever put an infotainment touchpad into their Cobra like this? Just wondering as I was thinking of putting speakers in mine and thought this might add a modern touch.

definitely doable... I opted for a thin mount media player (Alpine ILX-W650 (https://amzn.to/3SaafDP)), a touchpad/tablet would be pretty slick (and even thinner!)

I actually just started doing some research on this because I was asking the forum about installing a navigation system in the car.

I really was looking for a more vintage style look so that it either hid away or appeared to look like it was supposed to be there. I have not found that perfect solution yet.

But right now I have found this particular model which looked a little bit more toned back: https://www.crutchfield.com/S-K1GcKeVvhg1/p_158XAV9500/Sony-XAV-9500ES.html

They do offer multiple sizes of this particular line of head units and I still have to do some measurements to what might fit best.

I'd suggest looking into Android tablet conversions, yes a lot of work, but would be customizable more than a sealed unit from kenwood, pioneer, etc...

I was looking into this myself recently and wondering if what I really need to do is to inset the car stereo slightly so I can have a SS door that recedes into the lower console/dash but when it's open it would have a touch screen.

I did my setup a bit like what toadster has done/mentioned. I built a center console similar to his... but I embedded an andriod head unit. It's unique in that it runs the andriod OS, has apple car play/andriod auto but it also has a sim card slot in it so it can use anything from the andriod app store without the need of connecting to a phone. It's essentially a tablet smashed into a different form factor and a small dac/amp included. Highly expandable with usb interfaces. I got a teyes cc2+ for my setup. The main reason I went with one is because of extra things I can do with andriod apps; ODB2 sensor displays, TPMS monitors, telemetrics, etc. A few disadvantages though...

Small package means using the extra interfaces requires a lot of dongles plugged into the back if you need the expanded capabilities
No HD radio features. Not sure if it's licensing or the fact that these are more popular over seas where maybe there isn't HD radio?
More popular over seas so support and polish isn't up to par with what you might be used to

I'm not trying to be Debbie Downer here but distracted driving is a real problem these days. And yes, I'm as guilty as the next guy. I just cannot imagine being distracted like with a fancy touchscreen device while driving a short wheelbase high power to weight ratio car such as a MKIV that pretty much wants to go any direction other than straight. The ideas in this thread are cool but not for me. This is one car that I'm staying fully focused on when driving.

Be careful out there!

I’m going very simple I think. Going to put the Holley 12” display in the carbon fiber dash. Maybe a heads up unit in the there as well for waze or google maps. Possibly music on occasion. And that’s all I think. Nothing else.

Today's in-car nav screens are eye level. With no top are you able to see the screen at that angle on a sunny day?

Thats a good question. I think with the Holley I will be fine. For the nav, I will have to see.... See what I did there?

100% agree, in my case it's for turn-by-turn maps with audio prompts - no video watching :)
I wanted something a little more integrated, and nothing hanging on my windscreen or dash

I definitely hear the sentiments around the car getting out from under you quickly if you aren’t paying attention. As a new Cobra owner, I have found discovered that when going from 1st to 2nd at decently high RPMs. I’m a lot more careful now.

For the screen, I’m actually interested in 3 things:

1) Having a back up camera. I’ve found those side mirrors and rear view to be more decorative than useful. I think it would be a lot easier with a camera.
2) Having Nav at eye level instead of constantly looking down at my phone.
3) Audio. I use podcasts and books a lot so I wanted to be able to listen to those as I go for a drive through the mountains.

Any thoughts for not having those things?

This is all opinion. It's your build, and you should build it the way you want. That said, I like the idea of a touchscreen. However, I'm not sure I like the backup camera idea. They still have blind spots. You're in an open car. If you turn around and look, you eliminate the blind spots. I have a mount for my phone that I mounted based on what I had seen others do. It's attached under the dash and holds the phone at basically the same level as the speedometer. That works great for visual directions, but I can't hear a thing. You'll get a zillion opinions on the usefulness of audio. The wind and exhaust noise trump everything.

My favorite navigation system is a Garmin that I slap on the top of the dash. Also use it as a speedo because it's more in the line of sight.
