View Full Version : Not Haphazard, I got Half-Hazard! Hazard light issues.

Just finished wiring and I am having an issue with my hazard lights -- the fronts will flash, the rears do not. The front running lights are Lucas original bulb-type lights, the rears are the "generic" 42-48 Ford-style LED Tail lights with a 3-wire to 2-wire converter. YES! - I have the LED Flasher! All signals, left, right, running lights, brakes, etc all work properly.

Here's what I don't understand with Hazards on -- the fronts flash, the rears don't. I pull the connection for the left lights, the right side flashes properly - front and back. I pull right, the left flashes properly front and back. Both left and right connected - no rear flash. BTW: I replaced the flasher already thinking maybe the original was bad out of the box... same result.

Any ideas? Thanks.

You’re sure you have an electronic flasher not a resistance type?

check your wiring on your 3 wire to 2 wire convertor. the below picture helped me with that as I had the same issue as you and realised I miss wired mine. I can't remember what build thread I got it from. ignore the temp connectors the identification of which wire goes to which wire is important.

If all of those items fail, you might want to relook at your hazard switch and ensure you have the DPST wired correctly

I had a problem with hazard lights as well it ended up being the hazard switch and was my fault, I used a single pole instead of the kit supplied double pole and created a feedback issue, I corrected my mistake and wired the switch "exactly" the way it's shown in the manual been working correctly since.
Also just in case, the newer roadster kits with the LED tail lights and converter use the LED type flasher modules not the ones for the filament type bulbs. I think the kit included both types of flasher modules. Good luck.

Thanks for all the ideas. Regarding LED flasher, yes, electronic, not resistance. I even tried two different brands because I read some people had issues with certain brands (found on a street rod forum). Also, yes, tested with two different DPDT switches... So, I will double-check the 3-to-2 wiring again. I have the 'grounds' going to body ground, not isolated to the 2-wire side ground, hopefully, that's the issue but in my mind - a ground is a ground is a ground. maybe not? Pic is great. Thanks!

I noticed you said dpdt and not dpst. The dpdt wiring is different if I remember and may require a relay.

Probably not needed (nor maybe not the appropriate thread) but speaking of flashers, here is a home-spun rear lights connections diagram I cobbled up mostly for the guy who should ever obtain my Roadster if/when that time comes. Also to help my old age brain remember what I did when I did it if I ever need it. Perhaps a newbie may find it of value.

Assuming your front and rear turn signal lights work corrected when actuated it would make me think you have wired the lights correctly, there is no separate wire run just for the rear hazard lights. The odd thing here is I understand the front hazard lights are flashing correctly, if they weren’t then it would be a little easier to diagnose. There is a separate flasher module for the signal lights and Hazard lights – they are identical clear plastic modules, so I’d suggest you switch them just to confirm the flasher is working correctly.
If that all works then I’d have another look at the DPST toggle switch after that again. Just to cover all the bases It’s a 6 pole toggle switch – on one end you’ll have the green and blue wires on separate poles for the right and left signal lights and the other end will be the split pink wire making 2 wires – one pink wire to each pole.
That’s all I have. There are some very capable wiring guys on the forum who might have a suggestion on what else to try.
