Hello all!

My name is Chris and I have been lurking for about a year as last summer, I had decided that I needed a cobra. I liked the F5 platform cause of the DIY aspect and would not feel bad about any mods I could make to improve the car. Well, I ended up with FF #5327 Mark 3 from California. Had just about everything that I would build in a car if starting from scratch. Stroker small block/EFI/TKO/IRS and a lot of improvements that the PO added that really made this one stand out for me!

Signed up a couple of months ago, with intent to ask questions, but incredibly most of the answers were already in here. I have burned up the search engine and have found some incredibly innovative solutions as well a fixes to typical issues. While the car had great bones, it was suffering from just some not really keeping up with maintenance. I am the 4th owner and the last 2 guys were not really mechanical guys, they just bought to drive and look pretty (which it does!). So, now that I have forged thru all of the mech issues, I am now turning to paint.

Which is the real point of my post! Ha! I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and it appears to be the black hole of cobra painters. The original paint was by Ken Pike, who I have spoken with (really cool guy) and it really looks sharp, however......There are many rock chips on the front as well as some curb rash on the chin. But the real big one was a crack in the rear when apparently at one time the bumper was pushed into the fiberglass. Would like to attach pics, but get error? Maybe not enough posts???

So the advice I need IS, does anyone have some recommendations around here to get some paint for this beautiful car? Thanks for letting me get this off my chest, doctors! Thank you for reading thru this and looking forward to joining into more conversations where I might actually contribute something to give back!!!

Chris

Chris,

You might reach out to GoDadGo https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/member.php?17319-GoDadGo on this forum. He's in Slidell, LA. Not Baton Rouge, but he might have painter suggestions for you.

Yes, I have seen his posts and I think he is about the only active poster from Louisiana. Slidell is not too far away. He has a really nice MK 4. I looked at his videos and I see that he did his own paint. Would like to think I could, but realistically don’t have that much time, and maybe a little out of my skill wheelhouse! I will contact him to see if he has some options. Hopefully, we can hook up at Cruisin the coast in October.

Thank you!

Another recommendation for Mike at Spotlight Customs. Note that many, if not most of us, end up shipping our cars to painters because there are so few that have the necessary experience to provide exceptional work and really make these cars stand out. It's actually not that bad to have a car shipped and Mike does some of the best work available. But you'll have to get in line as there is generally a long wait.

Hey, that is not too far! I will look into him. I understand that these are pretty special cars and my current paint is really nice. I would like to keep it that way! Would love to send back to Ken, however, that would probable cost about $4k for round trip. I will give him a shout to see about it. I am surprised that no one has given any recommendations from Houston or Dallas? Those cities are not too far away either and the pop density should bring a good amount of cobra owners....Thank you for the suggestions!

I'm located in Austin and have asked/looked extensively for painter recommendations in Austin/Houston/Dallas area. About the only solid recommendation I've gotten is A1 Restoration in Cypress (right outside of Houston). So doesn't seem to be a lot of options in Texas that have much experience w/ FFR roadsters. There are a few other shops I've found that will do it, but they also want to charge a stupid insane amount. For the amount they are asking, I would pay the $3k-$4k round trip shipping and send it to one of the better known painters on the forum on the other side of the country, and still come out significantly ahead.

The Hack Shack in Rogers AR has done some in the past. Custom paint shop that has built F5 cars, but no personal experience with them or quality of their work. They are about 9 hours from Baton Rouge. Oddly enough, I mapped the route from Baton Rouge to Rogers, and I live within 15 minutes of the route. I thought I lived in the middle of nowhere, on the road to nowhere.

FWIW, Mike Bray found and is using Riggs Fabrication in Justin TX, which is over by Texas Motor Speedway (north of Ft. Worth).

His late June update:

I don't know their pricing, though.

Thanks guys, I will look into these also. I am certainly considering shipping it (Ken, Miller, Levy, Kleiner, Whitby's, etc), as there is so few specialist down this way. I want to check the outfit in Houston mentioned, as that is only about 4-5 hours away. There are shops that do some incredible work on muscle cars, Lawless in Slidell and Road Hogs in Houma (both in Louisiana), but they are picky and have a tremendous backlog. And don't see much regarding fiberglass work. I have yet to contact them as I was reaching out to the experts (you guys!) to see if there were better options.
