After blowing out my ring and pinion gear last weekend on my 818, I'm about to button up repairs. I didn't put in this much effort last time and that might be why they failed. I probably had too much backlash last time. This time I got a proper dial gauge and gear marking compound.
The learning part of the project was learning to read gear marking compound.
My read is this is pretty good looking. Backlash is .13mm - the tight side of the .13 to .18 FSM range.
