Please Read My Gear Marking Compound

After blowing out my ring and pinion gear last weekend on my 818, I'm about to button up repairs. I didn't put in this much effort last time and that might be why they failed. I probably had too much backlash last time. This time I got a proper dial gauge and gear marking compound.

The learning part of the project was learning to read gear marking compound.

My read is this is pretty good looking. Backlash is .13mm - the tight side of the .13 to .18 FSM range.

Done this many times on various differential types and your mesh pattern looks spot on!

Question, did you secure the ring gear to the differential using Loctite? I only ask because I've had Subaru ring gears loosen up in the past.

That looks text book correct. Follow the gear manufacturers directions as to torque, bolts, break in and Loctite requirements and you shouldn't have any issues.

That looks right on the money. I don't have tons of experience but what I've done has been successful so far, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the feedback! I didn't have confidence in my read and now I'll breath easier.

The FSM makes no mention of Loctite, but it couldn't hurt and I will take your advice.
