After changing out my 818 front brake pads on my Wilwood's probably about 15 times, the rubber piston dust boots got all chewed up. I'm thinking it might be a good idea in the future to lubricate the rubber dust boots when changing pads by spraying some soapy water or some other rubber lube on them.

I suppose they are there for a reason, but the rear calipers don't have dust boots.

At $8 x 8 boots = $64, are they really needed?

Not for a track car, they will just melt off anyway. They are useful on a street only car to keep the pistons clean. I had street + track Z06. Once you get fast enough to melt the boots there's no point in replacing them, even if it's driven 95% on the street. In the Corvette community it's a sign of passage.
I haven't had any on my race cars for years.
