Like a lot of folks I have dreamt about building a Factory Five kit almost since they started business. And like most others life kept getting in the way. Until now!!! I put my order in this morning for a 65 Daytona Coupe complete kit. Now before I get a ton of posts about this shouldn't be a race please read the complete post.
65 Daytona Coupe Complete Kit
Powder coated chassis
Coupe GPS gauges
302/351 mounts
Body cutouts
Vinyl seats
Power steering
IRS
Options:
AC/Heat
Carpet
14" leather wheel
Side windows
Floormats
Battery cutoff
Front and rear sway bars
18" Halibrand wheels
Double Adjustable KONI shocks
Red Welwood brakes
Also ordering a Forte 427EFI crate engine with a TKX 5 speed
I'm still trying to define custom items.
Now to explain about the race. I have Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). I have been to stage 4 twice and thru chemo and now a daily pill I am back to stage zero. I have been fighting this for 4 years now. I will eventually loose this battle. So the race is not to complete the car in record breaking time, it is being able to complete the car and have the enjoyment of driving it before the CLL wins. Wish me luck!!
Recently my employer offered an early retirement package that now gave me the financial ability and the time to take on this project. I expect the lead times for both the kit and the engine package to be 7 - 8 months so updates to this thread will be sparse to start with but as soon as I am given the ability to post pics I do have recent updates to share.
I look forward to the build and to any and all help anyone has to offer. I want to thank all of those who have posted threads as it gave me the confidence to tackle this project knowing that if I have a question I have a hugh family of folks willing and able to guide me thru.

First update:
Order accepted by FF. Production week is 7/23/22. Missed my birthday by a week.
After I convinced myself to really do this I had a minor problem. I had no place to actually build anything. My backyard on Nov 2nd!
156387
First step is a garage. First step to a garage is the slab. On Nov 4th the slab started to take shape.
156388
Slab was poured on Nov 9th.
156391156389
Now I need a driveway to get to the garage!
156392156390
Next summer I will blacktop the drive. Tomorrow I am having a crushed stone drive put in.

Congratulations on the order! I think this is the first time I have seen someone wanting to build a car, also have to build his garage. Kudos!
With that kind of attitude, I just bet you are going to win that race.

The crushed stone drive was put in today. They compacted it and it came out great. I had planned to pave it in the spring but I may just leave the stone. It came out great.

Scott,
Looking forward to helping you with this anyway I can. Happy to powder coat anything that fits in my oven and will definitely jump in for some build time. I strongly considered building a coupe but ended up going with the roadster because I’m my mind it would be an easier thing to tackle for a first timer.
Would be a pleasure to wrench on a coupe.

My thoughts on my paint job will be the reverse of your roadster pic, black with a silver stripe to match my Challenger. Already told my daughter, who turns 16 in Jan, that when we go to shows she can drive the Challenger and I'll follow in the Coupe. Should be a real crowd drawer parked next to each other.

I am excited. The parts which have not shipped yet do not leave me with nothing to do. There is plenty to do. It also looks like my body came out of a recent mold. Parting lines are in pretty good shape. I can hardly wait to tear into it and get started.

Having to wait until July of 2022 for delivery I have been going over the list of items I want to include in my build. I figure I will at least start ordering those items I'm sure of instead of waiting until July and then getting on wait lists. Talked with Russ Thompson today. Put my name on the list for his turn signal system, Daytona door sills and the pontoon panels. All timed to be delivered in July of 2022.

Hey Namrups,
I have been following along on your thread and let me first say - IMPRESSIVE!
I meant to comment earlier, but I've been been trying to get my build thread current and finally did as of last night. So, now I got no excuses to comment more on others threads. And I'm glad you were able to take advantage of the savings/deal as well. I was going to make a seperate post on it, but didn't want to upset the forum mods by promoting a vendor that's not a direct supporter of the site. So, I'm gald you caught that tid bit and you are so welcome.
Anyway, what I really want to say is... That I am totally blown away by your tenacity and fighting spirit! You sir are a rock star! I can only add that if you lived nearby, in Colorado, I would be over there to help you see your dream come into reality. I truly would put my build on hold and spend a couple weekends a month to help you out. I do hope some local builders find you to help out, that is, if that is something that you want. And if not, this site is the next best thing!
I know I'll be sending you "good vibes" and thoughts/prayers your way. I'll be following along as you take on the build challenge and journey. I think your story resonates on a whole different level, way beyond my own dream, thats for sure! The past challenges you've dealt with are unfortunate, but it sounds as though you have this all in perspective, and that is what truly matters. Just know that I'm not the only one out here in your grandstand rooting you on. Keep up the tenacity and fighting spirit as you obviously have done so while facing your health issues. As a complete stranger and maybe now a virtual friend. You fight like hell! Keep smiling and laughing and living. Bcause in the end, we all have to go, but it's how we lived that we can look back on each of our own lives and smile as we walk through deaths door and experience what's next? It's not how we died, but truly how we lived. Fight my friend - FIGHT!

Thank you SIR for your kind words and encouragement! I know that I can depend on everyone on the forum when I have a question that need answering. That's what this family is all about. Building this car is my dream and I will enjoy every minute if it. The cancer will ultimately win but I will not let it spoil my enjoyment. It's all about choices. I can choose to be depressed or I can choose to be excited. I choose excited.

I just received a call from Factory Five. Someone had offered to trade their Christmas build slot with my July one! Sitting here thinking about it has gotten me very emotional. Knowing the excitement after ordering your dream and then having to wait for that delivery day only to offer to extend it out another 8 months so that someone else has a chance at their dream just blows me away. I have never in my 68 years had anyone do anything like that for me. I don't know who the person was but I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart! You are one in a million!
But I will not be able to accept your offer. I have been offered a retirement package and will be using the money from that offer to pay for my dream. My issue is my retirement date is May 1st of 2022. I will receive my check within 30 days of that date. Until that check arrives I am unable to accept delivery.
I am ok with that. I have said it before and I will say it again. Factory Five owners/builders are truly the definition of family. I am proud to be a part of that family.

Ran out of daylight! They will finish up tomorrow. I wish I had a bigger footprint but the city would have made me jump thru hoops so the 22' x 20' will have to do. I did get ten foot high walls so hanging the body from the ceiling until I need it looks doable. It's actually bigger than I envisioned. My vision of a lift also looks doable.

You and I are in the same boat. My garage is only 20'x20'. It was the largest we could build on the lot we had. I do have a 12' ceiling, but most of that is taken up when the car is on the lift. I just have too many other things in there (3 axis CNC, lathe, metal brake, 4' table saw, 60 gallon upright compressor, and so on...). I even have swingout doors so they would not take any room from the interior.
157971
There is not enough room in my garage to hang the body. I had to place it outside behind the garage. I just picked up a couple of UV blocking tarps and used bungie cords to hold them in place and stacked some CMU blocks for a temporary floor for them to sit on.

It doesn't surprise me one bit! The family community is really fantastic here. Each builder whether receiving advice, buying parts or meeting them in person, real genuine people!
Sometimes I forget there are good people out there. Whoever that was, went above and beyond.
Yeah Skuzzy, that's a real-class act right there! I'm sure they will remain anonymous, but to the person who would put their build on hold in this circumstance - JUST INCREDIBLE! I tip my F5 hat to you and raise a glass as well - OUTSTANDING! c[CHEERS!]
I'm also tight on space, but the key is to just stay organized as much as possible. Either way, it's all coming along nicely, Namrups! :)

Absolutely agree. I am not going to let cramped work space interfere with this project. Oh, I do have a series of racks attached high on the walls. That is where all the Coupe boxes are. They just fit on those racks. Well, everything but the IRS pumpkin. No safe way to get it up there.
One side of the garage has the driveline being built in it, the other with the car on the lift. I raise the lift when I need to park my old Mini Cooper in the garage.

Quick update
THE GARAGE IS COMPLETE!
158084158085
Its 20 feet deep by 22 feet wide. The walls are ten feet high with the peak at 13 feet.
158086
I had the 8 foot wide rollup door and the pedestrian door offset so that I would have a wall free to install benchwork, cabinets and a compressor.
158087
My thought process was that this space was not going to be a two car garage but a dedicated build spot/storage for the coupe. I went with the oversize rollup door figuring I could possibly install a lift with room on both sides to work and no garage door rail being in the way. A lot of pictures I see of installed lifts have them right tight against the wall so that they can keep the space as a two car garage. IMO it doesn't leave any space to work in on the wall side. With the 13 foot high peak I should be able to hoist the body up out of the way on the pedestrian side and work under it with out it being in the way. Any thoughts?

Hey Steve. Yep good visit. Glad you got one on order. sounds like part shortage is hurting everyone. My Coupe made it to the body shop back in Oct. They just moved to a new location and didn't have the paint booth set up. Fast forward to last week and the paint booth sounds like its ready, The Coupe will break in the booth. 1st car to be painted. but 1st up is primer and block sanding. most of the body work is complete. Still waiting on the motor and transmission. good thing is the warranty on that has not yet started. here is a pic of the car as it sat last week. Maybe by summer. be tearing up around town. :D. Doug

New Tools
One of the things I noticed reading the build threads is we all love the idea of getting new tools. So do I!!
Another thing I have noticed is that there could be some confusion with the number of different aluminum panels on the coupe and where they should go. I've always wondered how everyone could keep them straight after removing them to get them finished. Taking a lot of pictures and good notes is probably a must do. When I was ordering my flare kit from Eastwood (which arrived yesterday) I noticed a 36 piece letter and number stamp set. (Also on sale!!)
158145
My plan is when I am sure of a panels location I will stamp a letter or number code on both the panel and the spot on the chassis where it goes. If I do it in the same location on both I will then know where the panel goes and the proper orientation of said panel. If the stamp chips the powder coat on the chassis I can either touch it up or leave it as is because it will get sealed by the silicone and covered by the panel anyway. As long as I don't get to aggressive with my punching, once the panel is mounted the stamped code will not be seen.
Thoughts??

I received a call from Dave Smith today. Really, the owner of Factory Five calling me?? He mentioned he read my build thread and he asked how I was doing health wise. Told him I saw my oncologist this morning and I'm good to go for another 4 months! He asked if my garage was ready and we talked about some options.
I have said it before, this family is indescribable. What the builders, buyers and forum members will go out of their way to do to help others is something I have never experienced before. Now to have the owner of the company really concerned about one of their customers is unheard of in this day and age. Every other company should take lessons from Dave and the rest of the employees at Factory Five. And every person should experience and take lessons from the folks on the forum about paying it forward. The world would be a better place.
I will always be grateful and thankful to everyone. I hope to be able to pay it forward as well as I have received.

Congrats and welcome to the FFR family!
A personal call from Dave Smith is pretty cool! I sent him a long thank you text once at his own request during LCS last year, and never got any response, but that's a story for another day (he is a busy guy and your situation is far more deserving of his time than mine).
We all love building cars, but also the garages too. I enjoy following along in your thread here, and wish you well on your health and the upcoming build(s)! Stay active on the forum, ask questions, and share your ups and downs. That's what this family is all about.

One of my other hobbies is HO Model Railroading. My layout is a DCC (Digital Command Control) setup. It means it is basically computer controlled. The computer will be able to tell which tracks trains are on, automatically switch tracks etc.
I am working on this section of the layout at the present time.

This is the wiring involved to make this section work.

Wiring the coupe should be a piece of cake in comparison  right???

Maybe. Talking to a friend about spray foam. Not a large volume so it wouldn't take long to warm up with a salamander even without insulation. It's a lot of square footage at $20 - $30 a sheet for the foam board. Rather spend that on upgrades/tools.

Supporting member and proud of it
While I have been on the forum I have noticed that some members were "supporting" members and I was confused at what that was. I didn't know what was involved to become one but was very interested in it as this forum was the driving factor in me making the decision to purchase a kit and I plan to rely on it as I build my Coupe. If there was a way to support the forum I wanted to do so. Well I finally figured it out and am proud to say that I have become a supporting member myself!

Health Scare
As I've stated earlier in my thread, I have Leukemia. I take a pill every day that is keeping the cancer at bay. It gets sent to me once a month via FedEx. The retail cost of this medication is $20,000.00 per month! (No that is not a typo. Twenty THOUSAND dollars a month) I have very good insurance thru my employer and only pay $10.00 a month. My insurance is considered a high deductible plan and I have to shell out the first $3500.00 of medical costs before the insurance kicks in. I met that requirement last month so my pills shouldn't cost me anything this month. I received the call last week for my upcoming scheduled pill delivery this week. No problems. Then on Saturday I received another call from the pharmacy that my coverage had ran its course and I needed to send them $1900.00 before they would send my pills! Even after explaining how I should be receiving them at no charge they would not listen. Knowing that these pills are what is keeping the cancer at bay I figured I would use my health savings account money to make the payment and fight it out later to try to get my money reimbursed. You guessed it. My charge was denied. It's Saturday. Couldn't contact anyone to try to straighten this out. You can imagine what the rest of my weekend was like.
Good news. First thing this morning I was on the phone with my company, the insurance company and the HSA card company. Got a call from the pharmacy at 4:00pm telling me they had worked with my insurance company and were sending my pills out free of charge!
I can just imagine what nightmares I will have in May when I retire and go on Medicare.
To keep my mind off the above nightmare I worked on the garage today.
Mounted the electrical panel board.
158582
Running the cable thru underground PVC conduit from the house to the garage. Dug the trench. Glued the PVC together. Pushed/pulled the cable thru. Wouldn't want to do that for a living! Installed the glued together PVC/wire into the trench.
158583
Buried the pipe/cable.
158584
Waiting for the electrician to hook it all up.

Did have help from my neighbor who is a backyard mechanic. I think he is just as excited about this build as I am.

That is some serious *bs* about your meds, but if I get on that soapbox, i will not get off,.....so,...take a breath Skuz.
I hope your building ordinances are better than ours. My external garage was restricted to 100A of 220V service. I have to shut off my 60 gallon compressor before I can use my MIG welding machine as one of them might trip the breaker if they run at the same time.
You do what you have to do. Your garage is looking good.

The sad thing about these wonder drugs is they price them so no one can afford them. You read about people making the choice between their meds and the heat bill.... well it's true. Hope to never get to that point. Don't know what I would choose.
The retired electrician I'm working with said we could run 200 amp service from the house to the garage but the oldish panel board in the house will only accept a 125 amp fuse so it's 200 amp wire to a 200 amp board to carry 125 amp service. I could have gone with a 150 amp board and wire but they are considered special and cost more.

I too am happy to hear that you got the prescription insurance coverage sorted out. I don't know what you'd do without it.
I built for years and perhaps things are different in your jurisdiction but here (Indiana) any horizontal run for electrical service must be buried no less than 30 inches deep. It may be that you aren't undergoing inspections on your garage project but if you are it would be prudent to make sure that you're in compliance now rather than finding out that you aren't later. Just a heads up.
Carry on and stay well!

Having a crushed stone driveway has me a little concerned with deliveries. I know that Stewart has a dolly that can be used to get the car into the garage but I don't know if the wheels would dig into the stone or not. The motor and trans will also be substantial and will not come with a dolly. Just a drop lift truck at the curb. With that in mind I ordered 4 dolly wheels from Tractor supply.
158632
Each is rated at 300 lbs and has foam filled rubber tires. The plan is to use a left over piece of 3/4 inch plywood (4'x4') and some 2"x4"s to make my own dolly. Will post finished pics tomorrow for every ones critique.

While those casters are better than the tiny 2-3" solid ones, they still won't roll over crushed gravel very well. You may be able to use a tow strap and pull the dolly across the gravel with an ATV, lawn tractor, pickup, whatever you have... but I don't suspect you'll be able to push by hand a 600+ pound load over anything but a paved surface with those. How long is your driveway? If plywood wasn't so expensive, you could lay a couple sheets down for a temporary surface to roll things across.
Otherwise, I suggest asking the freight delivery drivers to back into your driveway if possible. Many drivers are more than accommodating, if they have the space to pull it off, despite what the fine print in the terms of the sales-order states. Good luck!

You will be amazed at what you can work around. I built my MK4 in a two-car garage and suspended the body from the ceiling. A year ago, I moved from my huge dream shop which would have been awesome to build my upcoming Type 65, and now I have a detached 12X30 shop for the build. My three-car garage is full and my MK4 will have to be stored in my covered trailer during the build. Where there is a will, there is a way...

The driveway is about 80 feet. I do have to say that the crushed stone is very solid. They packed it down well. You can't kick it loose and turning the car on it to get it into the garage does not dig in. Having a couple of sheets of ply is probably a good idea. I guess only time will tell.

The shop lights are only $17.99 when you buy three or more. They only draw 1.1 amps. I wasn't sure how many I would need figuring at 1.1 amps if I needed 4 per wall the amp draw would still be less than a twenty amp circuit. They are plug in so only an outlet needed. I plugged one in to see what kind of light they gave off. The box says 5000 Lumen and they are right. One lit up the whole garage. I am now planning on 2 on opposing walls for a total of 4. Depending on the shadows I may add an additional one on the opposite walls.

The Saga Continues
Mentally dealing with the fact you have cancer is a *****. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Dealing with associated issues like the surprised cost I mentioned a few posts back is even worse. That was a tough weekend but it did all work out in the end.
Well I have a new chapter in the saga. Cancer medications are a wonder of science now days. (To bad they price them in such a way you need a rich uncle to be able to afford them!!) The meds I'm on are doing a great job of keeping the cancer at bay for now. It is killing the cancerous white blood cells as fast as they are being generated. But along with that they are also lowering my IGG levels. For those of us who aren't doctors I will keep this a simple as I can. You IGG level is an indication of your ability to fight an infection. The normal IGG level is between 600 and 1600. Mine is 300. My doctor suggested an infusion of IGG to raise my IGG level into the safer range. Given the fast rising infection rates here in NY I whole heartly agreed. The doctor contacted the insurance company to get the approval and they denied the treatment! They said they needed a history of infections before approving the treatment! Blew my mind. I told my doctor if I get an infection that history will be very short! We are trying to protect against infection and the insurance is saying no we need to see infections before allowing it. My next question was how many times do I have to stare death in the face and win to get the treatment? Once? Twice? 5 times? 10 times? It is truly asinine. I went to my company and they are trying to work with the insurance company. No idea what that outcome will be. Thru my union we have a very good disability program. It's 100% pay for up to 6 months. If the insurance company does not approve I will have my doctor put me on disability and I will sit home and get paid until my retirement date of May 1st. I was out for 6 months earlier this year when things were off the charts. (Not a bad gig actually) You can't make this stuff up!

I was happy to get my frame on the dolly as the weather here is gorgeous and I have been moving it outside to work on it. Rolling it back in on to the ramps of lift has been much easier than I thought it would be.

The price was right and they work great, if you have a concrete floor. When my Wife noticed I had moved the frame outside she came out and expressed concern I would throw out my back moving heavy stuff like that. I smiled, reached over with one finger and grabbed the frame, then walked over to her, pulling it behind me. :)

Ready and Waiting!
Finished planned electrical today. I'm not an electrician but after wiring everything from the main panel in the house to the panel in the garage and to all of the outlets and switch every thing worked and no sparks!!
At this point I have 4 circuits. One 15 amp circuit for the LED lights. Each light takes 1.1 amps. I have 6 lights on the circuit all of which are controlled by the light switch at the door. I decided to add the two additional lights on the north wall for two reasons. First they are not that expensive and second the more light the better. (especially at my age!) I have two 20 amp circuits. One on the east wall and one on the west wall. Each circuit has 4 outlets evenly spaced along the wall. The last circuit is a 15 amp circuit that I wired to an outlet right next to the panel box. (No real plans for that ... just because I guess) I have future plans to add an additional circuit to the north wall for my future compressor and an additional circuit if I add a lift.

Ya I was afraid of that.
Then again, I am of the mindset, "if it seem difficult to do, then you do not have the right tool." I gave up second guessing myself, on tools, a long time ago. If it makes the job easier, then I am buying it. I may not need again for 10 years, but I feel good knowing I am covered.

I am of a similar mindset. This will be my only build. I am not buying special tools to be used a second time. There won't be a second time for me. I'm buying to make the job of building this one the easiest and best I can do.

POR15 first try
I have never used POR15 before. I had received my Moog tie rod ends so I figured I would try the POR15 on them to see how it works. I did all four step recommended. Step one Degreaser, step two Metal Prep, step three Base coat and step four Top Coat. My build plan is to paint the car Black with silver strips edged with a red stripe to match my Challenger. Where most paint suspension parts with black POR15 I am going to use Safety Red POR15. Safety Red is only available as a top coat so I decided to use the Gray as a base coat. I had thought about spraying the POR15 but figured I try these using a cheap throwaway paint brush. If it didn't look good enough I could always recoat it.
Tie rods as bought
They look greasy to me.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160348&d=1642440041
Tie rods after first step degreasing
Don't look much different.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160349&d=1642440041
Tie rods after second step metal prep
Now they look different. Dulled due to being etched for 10 mins.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160350&d=1642440041
Tie rods after step three first coat of gray base coat
I was surprised at how thin this material is. I was expecting a thicker fluid. Because it is as thin as it is it needs a second coat for good coverage.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160351&d=1642440041
Tie rods after step three second coat of gray base coat
Much better looking.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160352&d=1642440041
Tie rod ends after step four first coat of red top coat
Again was surprised at the thinness of this material. It is thicker than the base coat. Again it will need two coats.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160353&d=1642440283
As the photo below shows a second coat is needed.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160355&d=1642440283
Summary: I am very pleased with the looks of this material. I am also very pleased that it does not have to be sprayed to look good even using cheap throwaway brushes. It's a lot of steps but well worth it. The rest of the suspension parts should really pop!
All responses welcomed.

Preparations Continue
Going over a couple of build threads for the NRG removable steering wheel mod I knew I was going to need some more items to be able to complete it when the time arrives. I have been documenting all of my purchases with part numbers and costs not only for my use and review but also for anyone else that is trying to find a part number or item cost. They are all in the "Special Tools, Custom Parts, misc supplies" album here: https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/album.php?&u=32036
I went to McMaster-Carr for all of the following:
18-8 Stainless Steel Hex Drive Flat Head Screws M5 x 0.8 mm thread 14 mm long
These will be used mount the steering wheel to the NRG unit. I chose the 18-8 stainless as it has good strength (~80,000 pounds tensile) and is corrosion resistant. If it had been an exterior application I would have goon with the 316 stainless. The A286 stainless has a much higher tensile strength (over 100,000 pounds) but I didn't feel it was required in this application. They come in a package of 50 so I will have a few extras.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160587&d=1642702254
4.2 mm Carbide-Tipped Drill Bit
I decided when I started to collect the tools I needed for this build that I would just buy the drills/taps/dies that I needed instead of buying sets that would have parts that I would never use. The 4.2 mm drill is used to drill the required hole for the M5 tap that is used with the M5 screws. I chose the carbide tipped drill as it is longer lasting than either the high speed or cobalt bits and is not as brittle as a full carbide bit.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160582&d=1642701698
M5 x 0.8 mm Thread Titanium Nitride Coated High-Speed Steel Plug Chamfered 7/8" thread length General Purpose Tap
Chose the titanium nitride coated tap as it longer lasting and should hold its edge better.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160586&d=1642701698
3" Long Sliding T-Handle Tap Wrench
Self explanatory.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160588&d=1642702254
Titanium Nitride Coated High-Speed Steel 90 degree 3 Fluted Countersink
The 90 degree countersink is for metric screws. I again went with the Titanium Nitride coated countersink for longevity. I went with 3 flutes as it will cut a smoother edge than a single flute.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160584&d=1642701698
The Titanium Nitride coated parts are a little more expensive than straight high-speed steel or cobalt but if I can get buy with paying a little extra but buying a part once I will take that chance.

The 82 degree countersink is for inch screws.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=160583&d=1642701698
Titanium Nitride Coated High-Speed Steel 100 degree 3 Fluted Countersink
The 100 degree countersink is for rivets.

I had multiple goals when I started this thread. First was to join the "family" of owners/builders of Factory Five cars by introducing myself and explaining a little about myself and why I started down this path of building my dream car. Second was to document for myself just what is involved with this journey from start to finish. Third was to make it detailed enough for anyone else on this journey, no matter their ability, to follow along and understand/learn what it takes. Fourth was to make this build a wide open book for all of the experienced builders to follow along with and hopefully help keep me from going down too many rabbit holes. And lastly was to make it interesting enough to keep readers coming back for the next installment. I'm glad that you have enjoyed it!

Hi Scott,
I'm pretty sure you don't need a windshield washer here in NY. I don't have one and I passed the inspection. As for wipers, I used a single, hand operated wiper (Sea-Dog 412601-1 Manual Windshield Wiper) which was fine for inspection purposes. It probably won't work on the coupe, unless you're willing to drill a hole through the glass :p. Here is the list of equipment required for passenger vehicles published by DMV. https://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv529.pdf
Don't forget, you're welcome to borrow my engine hoist and stand when the time comes. Their just sitting in my basement, keeping the house from floating away.

Thanks for the DMV info. I will take you up on the hoist and stand when the time comes. My daughter still talks about her ride in your roadster. I really hope to finish mine before she graduates. I plan on teaching her how to drive it (as it will be hers in the not to distant future!) and would love to see the reaction when I pick her up from school and she gets in the drivers seat and drives away.

Fuel Pump & Hanger Assembly
I received the PRO-M High Flow Fuel Pump Hanger for 1986 - 1997 Mustangs.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161249&d=1643138193
This assembly is a duplicate of what Paul (EdwardB) used in his coupe build. Before I attempt to assemble these parts I do have a few questions.
I also purchased the separate installation kit which has duplicated some parts.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161250&d=1643138193
When I first saw the hanger I noticed the electrical wires already had slip on connections.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161251&d=1643138193
I thought "Great I don't have to splice wires!" WRONG! After taking a closer look I noticed the connections were not the same size. One was smaller than the other. When looking at the pump I could see the connections were the same size.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161253&d=1643138193
The first question I have is with the hose clamps. The hanger has two crimp style clamps where the installation kit has two screw style clamps. Is one better than the other in this application or is it a toss up?

The problem with the regular screw clamps is that they tear up the outer layer of the hose, can tear the reinforcing in the hose, weakening it.
Hose clamps for fuel injection hose are smooth, like those crimp clamps, but still use a screwdriver to tighten them.
Those are the best IMO. Most parts stores have them, Fuel Injection Hose Clamps.

Tool Issue
Over the years I have accumulated a lot of general tools. Wrenches, screw drivers, sockets, saws, etc. My biggest problem is I can never find the tool I need, when I need it! I have never been good at returning my tools back to where they belong. This might be due to the fact that I have never had a location to keep my tools. When I started this journey I new that would have to change. I didn't want to be spending most of my time looking for the tool I needed instead of actually doing the work.
After the garage was completed and I started to organize the bench work/table I went around my whole house and collected my tools and brought them all out to the garage and laid them out on the table. This allowed me to see what tools I might have to purchase going forward.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161477&d=1643575038
Now that I had them collected I needed to do something with them. My thought was to purchase a rolling tool chest. A Snap-On chest was my dream but totally out of my price range. If I was young and would really use it for the next 30-40 years than maybe. At 69 I just need something to keep things organized for whatever time I have left. Having decided that, I saw that Harbor Freight had a sale on a rolling 9 drawer tool chest this weekend. This will suit my purpose perfectly. My neighbor and I picked this one up.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161482&d=1643575071
My initial thought was to fill it with my tools and to be able to roll it around to where ever I was working. The pro is it would keep my tools within easy reach at all times. The con is I feel that the chest could easily tip over if I got absent minded and opened too many drawers at a time. After discussing this with my buddy and as I will be working on this project by myself most of the time we both agreed that I need to put it in a spot and leave it there. I also decided to actually attach it to the wall so that it cannot tip even with all of the drawers open. I split the two benches I have and put the chest between them.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161479&d=1643575038
I then cut two small clips out of a piece of aluminum angle I had and attached the chest to the vertical garage members.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=161481&d=1643575038
I also remembered I had a piece of peg board laying in the basement so I put that to good use also.

Health update - major frustration!
Anyone following this thread knows I have cancer. In early Jan. the local covid infection rate skyrocketed. My condition made it very dangerous to be going to work every day. (From Jan 3rd thru Jan 21st there was 83 positive cases reported at work!) Last year my doctor placed me on short term disability for the same reason. I was out for six months. He decided to again pull me out until the infection rate came back down. I applied for the same short term disability. I found out that the company started using a new insurance company for the disability insurance this year. I am a member of the union and we were told that there was no change in the insurance just a new company. (Ya right) Well here we are 5 weeks into this and the insurance company has not made a determination to approve or deny the claim! Yes folks, that's 5 weeks without a paycheck! It took them 3 weeks to even contact my doctor. On Jan 21st they faxed paperwork they wanted my doctor to fill out with the notification that if they didn't receive a response on JAN 21ST it could cause the claim to be denied! They followed up 3 days later with an email to me with additional paperwork they wanted me and my doctor to fill out. Last Friday my HR contact told me that they wanted to talk to my doctor over the phone. I checked with the office today and guess what? Yep no phone call yet. I swear, nothing works the way it's supposed to any more.

Rivet Nut Installation Tool
Most of the build threads I have read use rivet nuts in locations where the panels need to be removed. In investigating different rivet nut installation tools I have made the decision to follow in Paul's (EdwardB's) footsteps (can't really go wrong there!) and get the Wrench-Driven Installation tools. Yes, they are more expensive than a lot of the tools I looked at but I am a true believer you get what you pay for. You know that for the 10-24 and 10-32 screws, you can likely do without the rivnuts, just drill and tap the tube. For those small size fasteners, there should be enough wall thickness to allow it.

You are right. I just feel better with more than three or four threads. I know that in most cases there won't be too much force applied to the fastener but it's just my preference.

So question since I will be using rivnuts during my build as well help me understand - The bolts in that kit are intended for "thicker" locations where you are placing rivnuts vs just make a drill hole in the frame as it is thin walled and tap it to the thread spec of the rivnut?
How does the bolt system work? Still obviously drill, then just wrench in one of those bolts and they act as the tap? Clearly this is something I've never done before, just don't want to *screw* it up...haha see what I did there? (apologize for that, first cup of coffee just went in, bit of mania happening here)

The threaded bolt is inserted into the holder. The revit nut is screwed on to the threaded bolt and inserted into the hole. The holder is held from turning by one wrench and the bolt is tightened by another wrench collapsing the revit nut securing it in the hole. When the bolt is snug remove the wrenches and remove the bolt. If you have ever used a collapsing fastener in a sheet rock wall, it's the same idea.

Rivnut is a threaded insert that installs similarly to a rivet, it is placed in a drilled hole, then the tool is used to crimp the insert in place sort of like how a rivet gets crimped in its hole. Then a bolt can be threaded into the hole to attach pieces together.
Look at this rivnut manufacturers web page to see examples of how they work, https://www.rivetnutusa.com/rivnut-rivet-nut/

Ok thanks guys. Are there any that mount flush to the fram or is there always a lip that sticks out a little - i.e. if I rivet in an aluminum panel it will sit flush to the frame....if I riv-nut it in with it sit up a tiny amount because of the lip?

I think they make some that are thinner on the top, but you will always have some part above the surface.
Check that website and see what they have available.
But, you should be laying down a bead of silicone between the panels and the frame anyway, so not like there will be any open gaps where air or anything would pass through.
That is one other advantage of drilling and tapping the holes for the screws to screw directly into the frame though.

The use if rivet nuts is so the piece can be removed for example the tranny tunnel cover, the dash, etc. or for a more solid connection than a normal rivet would be. On the drive shaft safety loop for example. You would not want to use silicone to seal the connection as you would not be able to separate it after the silicone cured. IMO the use of thin flat gasket with adhesive on one side would be a better choice.

The silicone wouldn't keep you from taking the panels back off for repairs or anything like that.

Most of us have been dreaming of owning, building or driving one of these vehicles. Now that I have actually ordered one I dream about it every day!
BUT, last night I actually had a dream in my sleep that my daughter and I were driving around in my coupe! I have truly gone over the deep end!

I will be the first to admit that 1) I am a car nut. 2) I have done my own brakes, exhaust system, U-Joint replacement. Simple stuff! 3) Have never restored or built a car from scratch like this. For this reason I have developed this build thread not only to aid and guide other newbies like myself but to also give the "pro's" the ability to keep me from going down a rabbit hole. It will also give me the documentation to fall back on if I need to in the future. At 69 my memory is not what it used to be so I intend to make these updates quite detailed.

In-Tank Fuel Pump Assembly cont.
Step 1: Undo the 4 small screws holding the upper and lower halves of the hanger assembly.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162024&d=1644342008
Step 2: Separate the upper and lower halve of the hanger assembly.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162025&d=1644342008
Step 3: Remove the plastic caps from the top and bottom of the fuel pump.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162022&d=1644341960
Step 4: Loosely attach the supplied preformed rubber hose to the fuel pump using the smooth sided clamp. I was not sure which way to align the hose or how far the hose was to be pushed on to the fuel pump.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162021&d=1644341960
Step 5: Attach the electrical connector from the installation kit to the fuel pump. The electrical connections on the hanger would not fit the fuel pump but the connector from the installation kit did so they will have to be spliced together. Hence the need for the Permaseal connectors.

Step 6: Loosely attach the fuel pump hose assembly to the upper half of the fuel pump hanger. Again not sure of how far to slide the hose on. At this point everything is still loose.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162019&d=1644341960
Step 7: There is a rubber isolator gasket that goes between the bottom of the fuel pump and the lower half of the hanger. Slipping that into place, the upper and lower hanger halves were reassembled. Keeping everything loose it took a bit of fiddling to get everything lined up and in place. (Having three hands would have been a real help!) I then tightened everything down.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=162017&d=1644341919
Step 8: Splicing the electrical wires. Initially I was going to use the connectors supplied with the installation kit. (They should work right?) The more I thought about it the more I decided not to. The Permaseal connectors recommended by Paul were proven to work. These were not. I had no idea if these were "cheap knockoffs" or just cheap off the shelf ones and seeing that they would be immersed in gas I decided on using the Permaseal ones. Am I glad I waited.

Nice work on the pump. And nice you could get those shrink sleeves. The best I've found. It was a ways back, but a couple comments on the discussion regarding nutserts (aka rivnuts): (1) You'll like those insertion tools. I've tried every type, and those give me the best results by far. Like every one of the tools, some practice is required to set them properly. Too loose and they'll potentially spin. (An oversize hole can do that too.) Too tight and you can distort the nutsert (e.g. pull it off center) or damage the threads. (2) The thicker-walled DOM tubes in the frame (e.g. the main 4-inch tubes, plus others like the 2x2 square dash tube) have plenty of thickness to allow very adequate 10-32 (or even larger) tapped threads vs. using a nutsert. But the thinwall tubing used for much of the frame is not adequate. If planning to having it removable, then a nutsert is required. (3) But overwhelmingly for me anyway, the 10-32 nutserts are used for panel-to-panel connections. Like the splash guards. Or the access cover in the driver's side footbox. Etc. For those locations, a nutsert will always be required if you want threads for a removable connection. (4) Anyone who thinks a joint assembled with silicone can be easily taken back apart hasn't tried it. Don't plan on them coming apart without some damage and potentially ruining something. Been there done that. (5) How much a nutsert stands above the surface depends on the style. But generally it's not an issue.

Battery Cable Lug Crimping Tool
Knowing that good connections in the electrical system are a must, I was searching for a tool to crimp battery cable lugs. I found some top line hydraulic tools that I drooled over. Then common sense smacked me in the back of the head. I will have less than a dozen heavy cable lugs to crimp. I do not need that kind of tool. On Amazon I found a simple tool that uses a hammer. It comes with a number of different size lugs and shrink wrap, all in one kit, all for $26.74. It arrived today!!

Stupid question... the clecos are to hold panels in place temporarily, but then when you want to actually rivet or rivnut or whatever, you take them out... how? They are 'sort of' crimped in there so you need to do what, when ready to do the actual assembly?

The clecos are spring loaded, there is a plier like tool that you use to compress them to put them in and take them out.

One of the batteries for my drills does not hold a charge anymore. I was online pricing an OEM replacement. $90.00! I've had these drills for over ten years. I decided to retire them to my HO Railroad I'm building. Has anyone had any luck with the cheap batteries? Having made that decision I now needed to go buy a new one!!! I recently ordered the battery operated Milwaukee M18 Pop Rivet gun so I figured a new Milwaukee M18 drill would keep it company nicely. A trip to Home Depot was in order. You bought the M18 rivet puller? Are you sure? $900 and way overkill for these builds. Pretty sure it doesn't even pull the 1/8" size rivets, the most common. I'm betting you have the M12 version. I have one and it's perfect.
I've actually found all the M12 tools (I think have have most of them... :p) are well sized for these builds. Especially the ones indicated as "Fuel" as these are the brushless motor versions and are really excellent.

Decided to purchase the Fortress air compressor that was on sale at Harbor Freight. May not be good enough to paint the car with but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. May give me the excuse to get it professionally done or maybe just drive it in gel coat.

Would love to push back and fight but the down side if I lose is just to much. 7 weeks without a paycheck puts me right at my limit. Any more and it would ruin my plans and probably force a cancelation of my order. Not going down that trail.

Looks like Ididit completely redesigned that module, although the part number appears to be the same. The picture on Summit's website is what mine looks like. And it's not that old. Purchased a little over one year ago for my truck build. Mine has obvious relays attached and wires permanently attached. The connector is new.

It certainly surprised me when I opened the box. I was expecting something small like what I saw on you thread and in the pic. It looks well made. Finding a space for it may be a challenge.

Boig Cool Tube Dress UP
I, mistakenly, thought the Boig Cool Tubes were polished stainless. They are actually raw aluminum. Being raw aluminum the surface finish is dull. There are clamp marks where the bends were made along with some scratches and manufacturing/inventory markings.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=164241&d=1647740661
Don't get me wrong, I feel they are worth every penny paid. They are custom bent with custom rubber tubing and all required clamps. But I wanted to dress them up a little. I had recently purchased a quart of SharkHide so I figured I would experiment with these. I used some course green Scotch-Brite to "polish" most of the marks away and to "brighten" the finish as shown in this pic.

I then gave them a good washdown with acetone followed by lacquer thinner. After they dried I used the recommended cloth diaper to apply a coat of the SharkHide. I'm happy with the results.

When I ordered there was no choice. I just wanted a more dressier look than the raw, marked up aluminum. I could have gone with a ceramic coating or even a powder coating. IMO the SharkHide was the simplest.

Back-up Camera
Wandered off the reservation of others builds a little. Decided to use a back-up camera/mirror. Chose the Auto-Vox T-9. I don't remember where I saw a review of this one but was impressed with it. A bit pricey but should make the blind spots on the coupe a little easier to deal with.

Those full display video mirrors are really the way to go, the booger is getting proper placement of the camera to get a full view.
Best placement would be up top just above the rear hatch glass, similar to how the camera is placed on the C8 Corvette.
I've been looking for an acceptable camera pod to mount in that location but haven't seen anything I like, will probably just have to make my own.

Ltngdrvr, My thoughts exactly. The review, that I can't remember where I saw it, had mounted it right at the bottom of the coupe's tail. It gave a nice wide view of the road and everyone's bumpers. Ideally I would like to mold it into the roof line right above the hatch window somehow. Would like to make it replaceable also. Not sure if my skillset is capable of accomplishing that or not. Only time will tell. A second location would be on the back just below the top lip under the spoiler. That might be an easier install.

If you google search back up camera pod, you'll find some, but they are large and meant for the back of a truck or RV, and they point the camera down too much.
My idea is to us some 1/4 thick black PVC foam sheets, glued together in a stack to make a block piece thick enough to drill a hole in it for the camera to slide into, then cut and shape the block into some aerodynamic profile, and use 3M mounting tape to attach it to the top of the car body.
I found this one on amazon, close but not quite...

Here's a pic of a rear view camera pod from a Jaguar, it's very close to my idea of what I would sculpt from the stacked PVC foam sheets, but larger than what I would want to end up with.

Corbeau Seat Scare
I wanted to order the Corbeau Evolution X heated seats for the coupe. I figured there would be a substantial lead time. To my surprise, shortly after placing the order I received an email stating that they were in stock and would ship without delay. I had ordered two seats with two 1" tall universal seat brackets. I was notified by Corbeau that they were shipping three items, the 2 seats and one bracket. I was eagerly awaiting for FedEx on delivery day. The driver brought the first package to the porch. I brought it in and noticed it was two boxes taped together that were the size of the brackets. Hmmm. While I was doing that the driver brought a large box the size of the seat to the front porch. Instead of standing the box upright he laid it down. Thought that was a bit odd. I was supposed to sign for the delivery but the driver took off and ran back to the truck and drove off. Needless to say I was a little upset as I was expecting 2 seats and one bracket and I received what looked like one seat and 2 brackets. I had wanted to talk to the driver but he was long gone. Looking at the seat box it was very banged up. Side seams had split and were tapped up. The top had what looked like extra tape applied. When lifting the box into the upright position to bring it into the house I found out why the driver had laid it down. There was a large area that had been ripped out!
Damaged Corbeau box

At this point I'm figuring I am missing one seat and the one I have is going to be damaged. I was not looking forward to that fight with FedEx. My anxiety level was thru the roof. I immediately opened the seat box and to my surprise found that both seats were packed in the one box. One upright and the other upside down. They were well packed in bubble wrap. After pulling them out and unwrapping them to look for any damage I was relieved to find them in perfect order.

Both of the brackets were in perfect shape also.

Lead times for custom parts/upgrades
I have been pleasantly surprised with lead times for the custom/upgrade parts that I have been ordering. Most have been shipped within a week or less. Today I ordered three items from three different manufacturers. I have been notified that two of the orders will ship today. I ordered the Schroth Profi II ASM FE street legal 4 point harness, in red, from Competition Motorsports. This is the model with the cam lock. I just received a call from them telling me that the red set will not be available until possibly July. As these are manufactured overseas I can understand the delay. They did say that they had the black harness in stock if I wanted to switch colors. It will work out ok for me with the timing of my delivery so I told them to let the order stand.

Yes it is. Drugs now days are awesome. You just need to be able to pay for them. Every four months I'm on pins and needles waiting to hear that news from my doctor knowing that some day I won't.
