I need some advice for changing a clutch and flywheel in my 818.
First, let me say that I've had 2 different engines and 2 transmissions in my 818.
My transmission is a push-type and newer CV joint design. (transmission female and inner CV joint male)
My question: Can I change the clutch WITHOUT removing the axles?
Removing the axles is a PITA. Basically disconnecting the shock and all 5 links on each side.
Looks like I might be able to slide transmission rearward 4-5 inches with the axles in place.
thanks for any advice.

I don't think you will be able to get the trans back far enough for the input shaft to clear the clutch pressure plate and still keep the axles engaged in the transmission.

You will have to remove the axles. I have done it a few times.

Tomorrow I will start removing my hubs.

When I didn't have the key to my wheel locks, I was able to swing the axles free from the transmission just by removing the upper links. Might or might not work for you.

I don't know what is different on my car, but disconnecting the top lateral link only allowed me to pull the shaft 2" out of the transmission. I had to disconnect everything attached to the hub.

I was also able to also remove the axles last summer just by disconnecting the top link. It was close though, had to really angle them out of there.

I suppose I am too late on this one, but for future work.....
Bob, I went the reverse route on axles and it went fast. I pulled the long bolt out of the bottom of the knuckle to free the outer ends of the lower lateral links. I also pulled the rear bolt on the lower trailing arm. This basically left everything hanging from the shock, but was very easily articulated out from the car a considerable distance. I guess I should have mentioned I took the calipers and rotors off as well. I was then able to easily pull the outer shaft from the hub. To get the shaft out of the trans mission you just use the shaft itself as a bit of an impact hammer. Line it up straight and give it a bit of a running tug. you will only need to bump it once or twice and it will pop right out. This is FAR SUPERIOR to trying to pry/leverage the shaft from the transmission.
This was my second round of pulling everything and this was a far better way. I had the axles out and the car sitting on all fours again in less than 30 minutes.

Thanks, I have one hub left to re-install.
