Is the oil filter supposed to be the lowest point on the car? Seems like a bad idea. I don't know if mine is stock or not.

Yea, I used a canton oil relocation unit for mine. Definitely don’t leave it like that.

Both the exhaust header and oil pan on my car are lower than the filter. Not sure that is a good thing, though. I'm also not sure if my filter is stock, but it is about 2.5 inches tall and purchased as an oem replacement. Bob Boig gave me the pictured skid plate to test, although I have not mounted it. Goes between the tabs supporting the motor mounts and the frame rail behind the fuel tank. 1/8 in steel and looks as if it should effectively protect the pan, header filter etc, but not light weight.147261

The stock STI/WRX filter is shorter than some aftermarket filters. The Outback filter is taller. See images for size comparisons.
Also I can't tell if you're running the stock oil/water heater cooler, along with a sandwich plate? If you delete that you won't have this problem. And yes it is a problem! I ripped my oil filter/oil heater/cooler off my Legacy GT race car a few years ago when I exited ORP turn 14 at over 100mph. It actually broke at the screw in boss up inside the block.

Don't know exactly what setup I have since it came with the donor and I don't know what a stock setup looks like. I'll take a better look and see.

This is what I have. Is this the stock setup?

No, not stock. The sandwich plate is definitely not stock. They are used to provide ports for oil coolers and/or oil temp sensors. You have a temp sensor in one of the ports but there is no wire to it, so it's doing nothing.

Take the sandwich plate off and you will be fine. Less likely to leak too.

Thank you very much! I'll remove it.

Removed that adapter piece and all is good. I just put the slightly chewed-up oil filter back on for now....didn't lose much oil.
