I'll be changing the front crank seal on a 351.
I viewed a video showing the installer putting thick, sticky grease on the o-ring on the back side of the seal in
order to help hold it in place when installing the balancer...
has anyone done this, or do you feel just lubing the seal and damper with regular oil is best practice ?

I usually wipe a little gear oil on the seal. It's thickness holds it in place a little longer than engine oil. I wouldn't have a problem using grease though as long as it is synthetic and it isn't a large glob.
