View Full Version : Remove axles to pull engine?

Hello,

This is a pretty naive question, but I am hoping someone can help out. I've got a 818 rolling chassis with the engine and transmission bolted in and the axles hooked up. I'm swapping the drive train, so I want to pull the existing one out. Do I need to remove the axles first, or can I just unbolt the motor and lift it out? If the axles come out first, are there any tricks or should I just follow the installation instructions in reverse?

Thanks!

They have to come out. Mostly just follow the direction in reverse, but it can be a little tricky to get them out of the sun-dial (transmission connection point) without messing them up. I used some big interior panel clip pry bars to get them loose.

Here is a picture of my 818 half way through an engine swap.

I had to remove my axle this morning to fix the CV, it's not as bad as I had feared. I would suggest removing the 4 bolts I have circled in red here to get the spindle loose and pull the axle. The reason I picked these 4 is because they don't have any spacers on them to fight back in place when you put it back together.
