OK, looking at either an 87 Grand National, 82 Corvette Collector's edition, an 89 Mercedes SL560, or an 87 BMW M6.

They are all roughly the same price range, give or take.

Which one would have the best combination of future value and appeal, and fun to own and enjoy now factor.

Obviously the GN would be the fastest of the bunch, but that is not the major deciding factor in this purchase.

Here is an example of some I'm looking at.

I am completely unfamiliar with the Mercedes and the BMW but I wold think that the Vette and the Grand National to be the two of the four that would hold or increase their value over time...

depends what you hope to do with the car. . .

the GN is badass, go fast in a straight line, but handles like crap

The SL560 is a good cruising car, good power handles good and you can go topless if you so desire

The m6 has it's own cult following, handles the best of the bunch, but has the typical '80's BMW power

and the 80's vettes are just ugly and underpowered

I agree with everything you stated above, with the exception of the Vette being ugly.

I like all of these cars, for what they offer and were intended for.

I think my decision will come down to which one of these will I be able to purchase, enjoy a few years, and move on to the next one with minimal overall ownership cost.

What about osmething more modern like an 03/04 cobra 'vert? Easy to get to 600rwhp, and its value isn't going to drop - they seem to have stabilized and have a cult following (similar to Supras - they can be 20yrs old but people will still pay top dollar for them)

Go with the GN, its the most fun and collectible. I like the looks of the C3's but after the 78 I had I will never own another one, they are not a very desirable car and a pain in the butt to resale. Cant say anything bad about the BMW either, cool car. I dont like Mercedes at all.

I think the GN is your best bet Rob. Besides, since you have the Riv it will continue the theme! :D

BMW & MB will be more expensive to maintain but be funner to drive. That is about the only Corvette of that vintage I like. Something about that color scheme just rocks. The GN,,,, that would be the one I would go for. Fewer around and it would be a good garage mate for the Riv. You could always replicate the Speakerworks GN from back in the day. Being in the biz you should know what I'm talking about.
But for the coin you're talking about, for a daily driver I would get something more modern with better handling and overall performance.

You guys are right on track with what I'm thinking. I really want to go for the GN, I'm just afraid if I get too nice of a one, I'll be scared to drive it and use it.

This car was cutting edge back in the day.

Geico commercial reference.

Rob - have you thought of the e46 M3 - that's in your price range - it's probably the best m3 they made for being a pure drivers car.

Looks like I may have bought that 16k mile GN. Will keep you posted.

My vote would be GN.

I don't care for that year of vette.

I don't care for Mercedes in general.

I hate red so the M6 would be out in my book.

None are really my style though.

OK...if all four cars were on the side of a cliff, and about to fall....which one would you save???

The 87 GN or the CE Vette would be great - either one will appreciate in value...

The CE Corvette was the most refined of the C3 Corvettes and the last year for them.

Man - cut a guy loose from his anchor (or is that ball & chain) and he goes NUTS with toys!!! ((Lovin' it...))

Get busy on that Riv and get a build thread going...

We need an OT-Other Cars forum here!!!!
