The Car looks magnificent D. The roll bar look nice against that burgundy paint. Hows the fit?

Frank,
The rollbar is really nice. I did have to cut off the DS rear brace and reweld it, but that was no problem since I had to weld in a PS rear brace anyway. My welder commented on how nice the welds are on your bar. Nice work, I love it!

Do you have any shots of the car from the sides? Really want to see the wheels and tires with that paint color.

Let's see. I have spent an hour on the forum when I should be working. Does that count?

This is the only one I have, but it really doesn't show the color well.

Also, keep in mind the car is not done and the gaps are not set, especially the tilt front gap.

Thanks for the nice comments. :)

I'll post some photos when I can.

This week I'm pulling the motor out and sending it back to Ford. There seems to be an issue with the heads leaking oil into the combustion chambers. I pressure tested the crankcase and it is not an intake issue.

One of the nice things about the tilt front is that it only takes about 2 minutes to remove the whole front clip. That will make it a lot easier to remove the engine.

Had a mobile welder come by the house and weld in my Levy 5-Link parts. Then spent the afternoon doing touch up painting on all the welded areas. Went back and read the build manual while the paint was drying between coats and realized I forgot to install the Trac Lock brackets from FFR for the solid axle. Duh..... Called Gordon Levy to confirm I need the FFR brakets with the 5-Link.......yup I needed them.

My wife, Trish, and I put the body on for the first time since almost the very beginning (more fun than moving furniture). I was so stoked to see how mean it looks with the skin on. Lots of things to make fit. Original idea to use the 15 inchers just isn't going to work so I guess it's time to order wheels and tires. And the throttle body will have to have an adapter (Trick Flow) so it will clear the hood. Oh well. It's really nice to see how the final fit will look. I'm also taking shots of the areas where components have to be like the alum trim under the door, not as critical as I thought. Now I don't want to take it off again. But it will have to come off at least one more time. WEK.

A load off my mind. New Smiths gauges shipped today, they'll go in in a week or two followed by some new rear axles (thanks Richard for your help on this) and a new oil pan. Been a busy week!

Street Performer seat spats: After several years of use, I noticed the left side of the driver's seat especially was starting to show wear from having my butt scuff the fabric each time I got into the seat. The fabric there was getting a bit shiny, and I could see that was the first location on the seat to show some wear. The area in question it just below the rib cage level plastic insert that came as part of the original seat upholstery.

I made myself a snap-on black leather spat, using saddle-grade cowhide. The results looked so good and worked so well that I made a similar one for the passenger seat. I believe that, with this additoin, my Street Performers will last indefinitely. I call these pieces spats, but they are actually chafing guards as they wrap over the outer edge of the seats, and the leather tongue that holds them in place slips through the outboard lap seatbelt plastic grommet in the seat.

Hmmm.... it's been a while since I posted.

I've:
Substantially completed the build.
Inspected, registered and titled it.
Raced it.
Experienced an engine failure
Sent the engine in for repair.
Reinstalled everything.
Got it back on the road and drove it. :)

Not totally done, but after 3 years it's on the road and it's a blast to drive.

Dallas, I'm totally overwhelmed by your lift front car. I know it's not exactly period correct, but it sure is impressive. Reminds me of my two E-Type Jags from the 60s and early 70s.

As for what I did on my car today, I took it to the car doctor. It hasn't been running right (off and on) for the past couple of months. I finally quit trying to figure it out and turned it over to a pro. Told him to do whatever it takes to make it right and not to call me until then.

Martin, maybe we need to get you in to see this doctor. May not cure you, but you'll surely feel better after looking at the candy in his shop. He was installing a built up engine he had done into a Chevy SS 396. Best paint and chrome I've ever seen. Beside it sat a 1957 BelAir two door hardtop that looked like it rolled off the assembly line yesterday (except for those wide wheels).

Thanks for the nice comment. But it is kind of period correct. The first 427 Cobra (CSX 2196) had a tilt front. That's what got me thinking about one.

Wish mine had a flip front end. Then I could install the wind shield much more easily. I see that mod in my future but first things first.

Today MesaMike and I put my 302 on a timing light for the first time. It ran pretty good timed by ear which turned out to be 10 degrees. So today we bumped it up to 14 and it smoothed out a little and now the computer has to think for a while. I can't wait to take it out for the first time with the body on it.

planning on replacing my master cylinder. It was a Whitby unit as part of my conversion to power brakes. From day one, it never did feel quite right and the internal valve of the MC tended to load up fluid into the rear reservoir and over time it eventually sprouted out the air hole on the Wilwood rear reservoir, while the front reservoir was getting low.

Whitby was notified and they shipped me out another MC. It's been sitting in the box all winter - just too cold to really work on it but I want it done before HB so this weekend is it.

Hi Jamey,

That's an interesting color scheme. I remember painting a model car those colors lots of years ago when I was a kid. So how did you come up with that? Also, details on the color codes etc. Can't wait to see the clear coat! Is it a DIY or do you have a painter? Good luck, WEK.

Note: just remembered where I saw similar colors: new Camero.

Jamey769

I'm doing the paint myself. And it is the synergy green from the new cameros. The stripes are just a plane black. I'm pretty happy with it. It was between this and the new mustang color "gotta have it green". This wasn't as pale as the ford color. I'll post more pictures and codes later.

Put the car up on my 2 post lift and started prepping for the Lakewood driveshaft safety loop. I got it from a forum member a while back and now that my engine swap (stock 5.0 efi to dual quad 427w) is completed, it's clearly a good time to incorporate some more safety mods. During the swap I ditched the stock bellhousing in favor of a McLeod scattershield (bought from another forum member). The D/S loop is one of those 'universal fit' versions, so to persuade it into place I'm getting to play with my HF 12ton hyd press to bend the brackets 90* and trim them up a little to fit inside the frame rails.
Bought a HF rivnut kit to attach it with, but now I'm having 2nd thoughts and may just drag the Lincoln wire feed MIG welder over and weld it to the frame. Future D/S removal can be facilitated by removing the hoop, as it bolts together on 2 pieces to the frame-welded brackets.

Next will likely be the oil leak that I think I've tracked down the source using some dye and a 'scorpion hunter' portable blacklight. Best as I can tell it's from the front of the block near the lower half of the water pump.

More to follow...;)

Thanks,
Will

I wanted something different, and the synergy green is a great color. I used the ppg waterbase paint. It's just a basecoat clearcoat system versus a three part candy system. It's the first time I've sprayed a waterborne automotive paint. It sprayed out really nice. Really happy with the look. And I have no problem with another green roadster. I'm glad I'm not the only one that want's to be a little different. Plus mine was first... LOL

Installed the hood latches. Took longer than I thought. I kept measuring one thing and then another but finally decided it was OK and just drilled the holes. It was a bit more tenious than I imagined but after it was done, looks good and works well. The equipment such as throttle body and foot box made me extremely nervious until I did some more measuring and found that everything cleared but just barely on the passenger side latch. One step closer to the DMV!:cool:

Just completed the MVD process so I have a legally registered roadster (1965 SHELBY). The lady said she was going to call it a FORD but the night before she did some research and found that Shelby America built roadsters thru 1967 so on her own she gave it that designation along with the SOCON next to it. One more cool thing to show my friends. Took a drive up the lake hwy and calibrated my speedometer.

I'm driving in gelcoat this summer (coat of hot rod black primer) while doing the body work. It still looks pretty sexy even without color. Lots of insulation, carpeting, and other tasks to do yet.

Just got back from vacation so I'm behind a bit. I removed my cool air system that was running out to the nose. I replaced it with just the KN filter at the TB. I'm getting ready to change over to a 8 stack ITB induction so lots of changes are in the works. I got rid of my MAF, BAP, EGR and some harness wiring to the O2 sensors when I changed over to the new Stinger tunable computer and wide band AFR gauge (tuning is going great). Now I will be really cleaning up the engine compartment when the new manifold is installed (due this week). I will have to fashion a "reverse turkey pan" to take care of the ITBs breathing (don't like the individual filters. I've never seen one on a Cobra but it seems to work in my head. It will sit on the tops of the ITBs that is the flat filter will but will go up with the hood open).

Also, adjusting the ride height a little bit in the rear while the roadster is up on the lift. It is settled a little. Looking at my next suspension project already which will involve moving the shock and LCA brackets inboard to make the LCAs more parallel with the frame rails (suspected small bind in the LCAs). Will have to add spherical rod ends in front to give some adjustment but try to keep the rear bushing with a little massaging of the bracket.:cool::cool:

Having fun in general working on the car and still driving before it gets too hot.

We had one builder that had never even ridden in a Roadster even though he's having his finished up right now. It was a treat to see the smile plastered on his face. He'll be wearing that smile at least a few more days.

Busy day today.

We had our monthly Triangle Cobra Club coffee this morning. Clipped off a fender liner that had come loose. Then went for a tech inspection for the upcoming season.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazine.com-vbulletin/850x566/80-techok1_337a53d525ca3f234b01451fbef19b720e91421d.j pg

Car & personal safety equipment all passed & am good to go. :smile2:

When I drove out to the coffee was wearing a leather jacket. By the time I was on my way home from the inspection was rolling down the interstate at a nice steady 80mph (3000rpm) in a Tee Shirt enjoying some 75*F weather with a strong Carolina sun shining down.

Last business of the day was to install carpeting on the sides of the trunk. Will do the floor & reinstall the liner tomorrow.

It was last Sunday, but "here's what I did to my roadster today."

I DROVE IT THOUGH A RIOT IN DOWNTOWN LONG BEACH

I had no idea there was a "march" in town that day. Unfortunately, the peaceful march turned into a riot on my very block. You may have seen it on TV. As I returned from a "Sunday Drive" I drove right into it, and the fastest route to safety was a few more blocks to the apartment parking garage door. (I was on a 1-way street and there was no way to turn around.) Needless to say, I didn't stop for red lights.

I made into the garage and as the metal gate closed behind me there were people carrying pipes and baseball bats. The other car was in a public garage across the street, and fearing it being damaged I took the risk of running across the street and bringing it into the apartment basement garage. It took some work but I was able to squeeze both cars into our corner single parking spot.

Could be the first Cobra to survive a riot! I'm not making a joke of the situation, I was scared sh_tless!

The strange irony is I thought about you guys, since a few of you have been saying, "You need to drive that thing more." So I did!

It was a nice drive though Huntington Beach, up and down PCH. Bad timing. :)

OK – BEFORE my experience above, over a period of 3 months, I spent probably 60 hours on a "15-year refresh of #4453”

Full detail including engine bay, engine bay aluminum, wheels-off cleaning wheel-wells, brakes, sidepipes, car underside, all plastic and all chrome including the door hinges
Taped down at least 12 spots where the carpet was coming up. The carpet tape was dry and crusty
Straightened out the steering wheel (it was off a wee)
Rubber tubing over the trunk pin (trunk was shaking up and down)
Touch up a few paint chips on the nose
Re-painted (by hand) the fronts of the sidepipe hangers (they were "sandblasted")
Replaced about a dozen rusty black oxide hardware bits with stainless steel
Checked all suspension nuts & bolts
Front end lube
New door, trunk, and hood D-gaskets
New overflow tank clear tubing (just in case, required partial coolant drain and re-burping)
Dreamed of MK4 Roadster seats

I got off work on Wednesday and am off for the next 4 days. When I got home I realized I left my wallet at work. So on Thursday, at 8:00 am I drove from Elk Grove CA to San Francisco, 100 miles. It was a beautiful day so after I picked up my wallet, I went down memory lane. Visited my old neighborhood that I grew up in in SF and visited my schools, elementary, middle, and HS. Then I decided to continue south on Highway 1 to Half Moon Bay which is another 25 miles. Had lunch then started back north on Highway 1. Hung out at Ocean Beach in SF and Golden Gate Park. Then heard a protest was scheduled in Golden Gate Park and I don't want to be a part of that so I hopped back in the cobra and went north over the Golden Gate Bridge. Hung out in Marin/Sausalito and left at about 5pm. Then took the back roads back home. Got home around 8pm and the temperature was 100* Fahrenheit! Total of just under 300 miles. 5th year 12,000 mile cleanup & up grade.

Final mock up of new dash panel with custom gauges, recovered console & transmission cover. Remaining 4 dash switches will go in as its installed in the car. Have to run some sensor leads & it will be good to go. Will stick the snake & Cobra script once its in the car.

Previously had done over the virus lockdown:

https://www.ffcars.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=192 0,fit=scale-down/https://www.ffcars.com/attachments/midpoints-jpg.358883/

Current status of rainy days & virus lock-down project. New NITTO NT01 275 & 315X 17" tires on the car, brake pads changed HAWK HPS

TO DO - fresh oil, oil filter & coolant, new oil pan gasket windage tray, new flywheel, pressure plate, friction disk, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, fresh transmission fluid. Carpet trunk.

DONE - Steering Shaft was the last thing I needed to take out before I start putting it back together. Fresh rear end fluid, new dash panel & covering, new transmission covering, new console covering, plastic toggle switches replaced with metal ones, twin dual range USB ports added to transmission cover, new custom instruments, sensors & sensor wiring.

Some help on this question anyone:

Have new Centerforce Billet Steel flywheel 700215, Centerforce DF148500 Dual Friction Clutch Pressure Plate and Disc Set, Tremec Bellhousing TCCM 1899, Ford cable pull throw-out fork XR33-7515-AA.

Looks like an adjustable pivot ball. What is the correct height & how is it measured?

Last old dash panel is gone but have a complete set of working instruments & sensors if anyone is interested.

Agree, It was a great ride. Ran from the Jersey Shore to Wall St. & back for over 25 years when I was in country. Also a regular runner at Englishtown Raceway Park. Had numerous Small, Mighty Mouse, Big Blocks & Muncie's over the years. Delivered as a 435BHP, Tri-Power, solid cam 427. Two favorite motors home built Mighty Mouse 406 Ci & 1970 350 LT1 370BHP solid lifter create motor short block with ported double hump heads with Victor Jr. intake.

406 Ci Mighty Mouse on the hoist

Car peaking in at the lower left is a 1981 Datsun 280ZX T-Top that my brother in law & I cut down into a convertible. The trunk lid was made by removing the window & welding in a piece of sheet metal on what used to be the lift gate & laying it down flat.

It saw my 3 girls through HS & college. The youngest kept it for her first job & when it came back to me I ran it for a while here in NC then gave to to "make a wish" when I needed garage space to build the Cobra.

Laser trimmed the tentacles to make my connector covers & all was well. Glad he stumbled by. Need longish connectors because of the way I set up the dash.

4 screws two on each side go into the Everson under tray from the dash bottom flange. The top of the dash fits between the body lip & cross bow square tube.

The console presses it up locks it in place & is secured by 4 black upholstery screws two on each side into the upper trans square frame tube. The long connectors let me get behind the dash by taking out the screws, sliding the console back along the tunnel cover without having to disconnect any wires.

There is enough room to coil the lines & loosely zip tie them.

Family stuff most of the week. This morning cleaned the preservative off the new flywheel & pressed in the locating dowels. Cleaned the preservative off the pressure plate & re-glued a few lose places on the dash where the FFR vinyl delaminated from its backing. Rough cut the trunk carpet. Did the sides years ago but never did the floor. Driving time got in the way.

My tags were put on my the NCDMV inspector after she checked my bill of sales against the engine, trans & main kit numbers. She stuck one on the square tube next to the FFR serial # & the second on the chassis X member. I had the number engraved on the FFR builder plate & riveted it to the DS footbox.

FWIW. Was refilling the coolant & thought this might be worthwhile to post. A good swap to eliminate the FFR corrugated upper hose is an F-150 COYOTE upper hose. FORD F150 COYOTE top hose trimmed at the blue tape is an exact fit in the MK-IV.

https://www.ffcars.com/attachments/tophosea-jpg.359662/

With the FFR type overflow tank you can splice in the FFR fill port.

https://www.ffcars.com/attachments/f150ffr-jpg.359660/

Anyone with a COYOTE & an expansion/fill tank like the MOROSO unit or a factory GT tank can eliminate the FFR top hose thingie with the fill section spliced in.

This week I installed 35mm wheel spacers behind the rear wheels, and new rear springs. The rear wheels on my roadster sat about 2 inches into the wheel well. I am using the stock 1996 mustang rear end, with original mustang wheels. The spacers do a nice job filling up the wheel well. Unfortunately, with the wheels pushed out 35 mm, the tire would rub on the fender when I hit a bump or cornered hard. Dan at Factory Five recommended that I install new rear spring; he thought the original 25 year old springs might be worn out. (Why didn't I think of that ?) I found some new moog brand springs on ebay and installed them. The car looks much better, I think, and has a much stiffer/less mushy ride. I did not cut the new springs down as described in the build manual. I did, however, grind them a little so they will screw onto the FF spring mount. I'm pleased with the results.

While waiting on delivery of the heater hose connectors for my Coyote engine, I installed the shift light. I used the Raptor and after a few tries got it programed. Had to set it to one pulse, since it reads off one of the coil pack leads. It will not read the rpm below 1000, but higher shows on the LED readout. I set the light for 7000 rpm, red line is 8000. I may go back and lower it some more.
I took the slider out from under the drivers seat. That went pretty well, except for a new hole in the aluminum floor pan. It is under the seat, so no big deal. I put a 1" square tube under the front for a little tilt in the seat. I really like where it puts my eyes and the top of my head.
I took a sanding block and knocked down some of the high seams on the body. Just bored and tired of the questions. Probably get some new ones now.
I threw the autozone car cover in the trunk. Got caught in the rain at a cruise-in.
I heard a new banging noise about a mile from getting home last trip.
I stopped and checked my new heat shields hoping I had not lost a clamp. Everything there was OK. With the car on the lift, all the suspension bolts, shocks, calipers, are tight. It would bang on a bump and was coming from the passenger rear. Bumpers still tight, body bolts still on and tight.
Will have to get the coolant connectors on and give it another ride. I have a fire extinguisher in the drop trunk hole, but it seemed captured with the other junk.
Done for the day.

Looks like I'll be on the road again soon. I'd sure like to see a how-to to get off Mass-flo. I know I'm still going to have to learn how to do it. What I have needs to go. Confidence is everything and, yeah.. Sometimes what was once leading edge turns out to have been bleeding edge:

I found out that my breeze battery box won't support the weight of my car!
I was jacking up the car to do an oil change after breaking in flat tappet cam and the jack slipped off the 4" tube, forcing the entire weight of the car on the corner of the battery box.
Snapped off all the rivets and sheared off one of the screws into the 4" tube. Spent some of the day disassembling the battery box and needed to redrill and retap a hole in the 4" tube (sheared screw wasn't coming out with an ez out).
Problem fixed and oil change accomplished, several hours later.

I was just thinking to myself, "that jack looks a bit off center" and that's when it slipped. should've trusted my gut.
or maybe FF could engineer a flat spot in the middle of the tube for a jack point.
or maybe i should not be an idiot and pay more attention.

Old plug wires were still fine, but after ten years of looking at Dark Blue wires I decided it's time for RED wires that actually route and fit better than the ones that came with the engine. These are 8.5mm dia from MSD, very nice quality. I bought a wire stripper/crimper clone off Amazon for 30
60% less than the MSD brand, it worked flawlessly!

Never really liked my HOT ROD air cleaner, so decided to buy this lifetime filter K&N unit. It has a raised base but is only 2" tall. so it still has 3/4" clearance to the hood. Rumours are that it will gain you 5 to 10% HP, don't know about that but it seems to REV faster now above 5000 rpm. I like the look with the Moroso billet aluminum valve covers and and catch cans....all business!134850

If you haven't had your corrective surgery yet, you can probably continue working with a brace. Consult your doctor of course.

If you have had the surgery don't take any chances! Even the arthroscopic surgery is major enough that you don't ever want to do it again. Talk with the surgeon, tell him what you want to do, and he'll give you a timeline. I asked my surgeon if I could start building again six weeks after the surgery. He told me to give me another month - so you're likely out until the spring (which, though frustrating, is not a bad thing from a healing perspective).

All the best, & a speedy recovery!

P.S. During an episode of "Running Wild with Bear Grylls", World Cup skier Lindsey Vonn revealed she has had five (!) ACL repairs. I can't even imagine...that's the difference between an elite athlete & us normal folks.

I needed to pull the engine down on the passenger side, and it is REALLY tight. I wanted to find a way to do it with a little more finesse and control than using a piece of wood and a BFH. Also, with headers installed, there was no room for that anyway. I drilled and tapped a hole in the side of a large nut, screwed in a piece of threaded rod, and used a part of a puller to make a tool for it. Lubricated a bit with grease, and it worked great! After pulling the mount down to the needed position, the tool allowed for the nut to be tightened before releasing tension. Very pleased with how that worked.

My j-pipe/side pipe combination on the driver’s side has been slipping down gradually due to the adjustable manifold / j-pipe connection. The poor quality rubber hanger on the side pipes is not helping either. I installed this stainless turnbuckle purchased on Amazon to suspend the system and prevent further downward movement. The system is free to move upwards as I used two chain links to attach the turnbuckle to the 3/4” chassis member. I also sourced a much stiffer rubber exhaust hanger at the local pick and pull. Fingers crossed!

I brought Redbone home from my brother's house (Again).

We've stored it there for every storm (Hurricane) that came to visit us this year.
I then took my baby girl for a ride (Emma age 27) and after that, I took my pal Matt for a ride too.

To say the least, it was a very nice day so I'm now enjoying one of my favorite Tequilas because I'm out of Scotch!

Wife and I made about 50 mile local cruise. I got my 4 corner balance corrected, thanks to Jeff K.
Rear does not feel as loose in a left hander now.
I clocked my MAF sensor tube and engine feels cleaner below 3K rpm.
Brakes feel like they may be requiring less leg, 1100 plus miles. Wilwoods 6 and 4 pistons.
Checked my tire pressure and set everything to 23# per my cheap gauge. Need to go back to 22#. 23 feels like it wants to dribble a little.
No new rattles or squeaks. Wife said she kept hearing something. It was me whistling.
Got to get those Speedhut gauge lights fixed, before paint day.

Did some more tuning of the engine after replacing the IAC valve with one that fits. Love the raspy sound of the stacks!

Test fitted the body for the first time, which also was a test of the contraption I made to be able to put the body on and take it off by myself. Worked great!

Made a front license plate bracket. Yes, I know ... but it's the law. Besides, I had extra sheet metal left over from the build.
136642

Riveted to a blank plate from Amazon
136643

More extra metal
136644

Bent and riveted that piece to the blank to give the plate some strength and forward spring loading.
136645 136646

Complete
136647 136648

Took it out for a test drive on some rough roads and on the freeway and there was no rattle nor contact with the body. Seems pretty solid.

Nice work! I am registered in VA as a 1965 with Vintage plates, so I keep my front plate in the glovebox.

When I left the house it was 39-F so it was not bad at all compared to my former motorcycling excursions.
I cruised to my pal Dave's how to see how he and Sammy were coming along on Dave's 33 HR.
They've finished the bodywork and were sanding away getting it ready for paint.
They hope to prime the car next weekend.

I have my differential and pinion out for a bad bearing. I am going to have to pull the housing out because I cannot get the rear bearing race to go in from under the car. I even put it in the freezer. It was a PITA Royale to get the old one out.
Hopefully all back together this weekend. I am missing some sweeeeet Florida driving weather.

I drove my roadster to the State University of New York at Albany, where I got my first dose of the covid vaccine! Thanks to the National Guard, for taking such good care of us. It was about 30 degrees out, but the roads were clear and it wasn't raining, so why not drive the cobra?

Stared at it for a long while and decided to upgrade to power steering. An idle mind is a dangerous thing.

Developed a "perfect" parts list and beat the hell out of my credit card. Even got a warning about suspicious activity on the card shortly after. Cant wait for the packages to start showing up. It's been a few years since I got car parts deliveries.

Let the fun begin

After two rotator cuff surgeries and reading the posts about the pros and cons of power steering (including one of my own), I spent the past several days installing the epowersteering system. Took a two hour cruise this afternoon and I am very pleased with the result. I am glad I did it. Next step will be an allignment to increase caster from 3 degrees to about 7. Looking forward to seeing how the car responds.
