Hi everyone.

So it's finally time to paint the car and the colour I want is a dark to very dark solid (not metallic) blue. I was inspired initially by pics of this car:

http://i65.tinypic.com/r249rc.jpg

which I think is the original (but repainted?) Gumball Rally cobra.

I also like these colours:

http://i63.tinypic.com/1127jm8.jpg

http://i63.tinypic.com/10qwck1.jpg

http://i63.tinypic.com/24qis8k.jpg

As you can see, it shows a trend.

The trick of course is turning these images into identifyable paint codes. So if anyone has painted their car in this colour, can they please share any paint code info they might have, and maybe a pic or link to what it actually looks like? And of course, if anyone actually knows the colour of the Gumball cobra above, that would be appreciated too.

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply Ken, I do appreciate it. Nice colours all to, tho I am trying to stay away from the metallic hues.

I did a 289 for Erik Hanson a few years ago. I believe it was Ferrari Possi Blue. Almost black. I'll try to find the paint code...da Bat

And if it helps any, the dark blue cobra above was one sold at the Barrett-Jackson auction back in 2007. Link here:

Maybe someone will recognise it.

I'm still early in my build, but I'm thinking along the same lines as you on paint. Right now if I had to choose I'd either go with Ferrari Pozzi Blue or Ford Sheridan Blue (used on late 50's and early 60's Fords). Both are non-metallic. Sheridan Blue is a little bit lighter than Pozzi Blue, which looks almost black in low light.

Edit: When I did a search on "Pozzi Blue Shelby Cobra" the other day, I came across this video. I don't know if this one is, in fact, Pozzi Blue but it's definitely the aesthetic I'm going for:

There's also this one, which I saw at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca a few years ago:

Hi all.
I just noticed that the blue on the current Factory Five Gen 3 Type 65 Coupe demo is a pretty nice blue that looks to be a solid colour. Anyone know what it is? Thanks

It's Lexus Indigo Ink Pearl...not a solid.

I remember seeing a very nice solid dark navy blue roadster at Whitby's shop, about 3 years ago.

Jeff Collins is a sponsored vendor and you could email or call him (expensive maybe).

It looked a lot like the Gumball Cobra picture.

I am pretty sure it was a Porsche factory color.

It looked great on the roadster. Jeff most likely remembers the color.

Years ago I painted my truck a solid blue color that appears to be identical to the car in the first post. It was a Mercedes-Benz paint code, I believe from 1986. It was leftover paint from a customer's car at the body shop where I worked; for whatever reason 1986 sticks in my mind. I will see if I still have the paint around, or a picture of the truck.

Indigo Ink is LOADED with metallic and pearl. He wants a plain color.

So choosing a nice solid dark blue is kinda hard work. Most (all?) modern paint jobs of a similar colour seem to involve metallics or pearls. I wanted to stay with a solid colour because I think it suits these cars. Anyway, I ended up chatting with the local paint supplier and they mixed up a custom brew. Tims Blue its called :p

So painter and I decided to give it a go on my car and this is how it looks so far (no fine sanding or polishing done yet):

102680
102681
102682

As you can see, its quite a complex colour. Quite bright in the sun, and yet almost black in the shade. And certainly some hints of purple mixed in as well. I am not entirely sure I met the original brief, but I do like it. I think it will look different again as the car is assembled and put back on the road. I look forwards to finding out.

Well brother, To let the painter and supplier custom cocktail a color "colour" (not sure how you blokes say it down under) ,,,,,well mate, You gotta pair....or you just didn't know that we (painters) are all highly functioning psychopaths / sociopaths....Let me take a guess. When you asked your painter how it came out he said "best one I painted all day mate".....ASK ME HOW I KNOW !!! LOL. Looks great brother. If you are happy, we are happy...da Bat

Classic response Mr Bat :p
To be fair to the paint people, they did spray out a sample which I approved, but of course an 8" square is not the same as a whole cobra. And the painter did query the colour on the car once painted, so I produced the sample and it perfectly matched. So yes, I think everyone was trying their best to deliver what I wanted, but as you will know defining a colour is tricky business.
Anyway, overall I think the car should look pretty amazing really, and even though it's another blue cobra, I think it should be unique enough to make it interesting! Which is really the main goal.
So yeah, I am happy :)

Tim-

The color is fantastic!! Really a rich color that looks deep blue in the sun and black out of it. You did a really nice job picking it out.

I look forward to seeing her put together with that great paint on her!

Steve

I'm also a fan of the solid colors. That one looks very nice. It really suits the lines of the car. Well done!

Choosing body color and wheels is a direct result of my increased bourbon consumption. That being said, you’ll never be sorry chosing that color.

Nice seeing a solid color among all the metallics. Any white or gold/yellow gumball or lettering/numbering will look great. White gumballs will go well with white Goodyear Billboards.

Thanks Mosh. I was thinking of some bright yellow pit stripes over the front wheels would be a nice addition. Maybe some yellow lettering on the rear flanks, but no idea what it might say.

I am avoiding the big white stripes at this stage.

Easy to research since you can Google something like 'ac cobra 1964 race' and look under images. Tons of b&w pics that will give you the details you are looking for then just choose the colors. You could pic a race team, sponsor, or logo to look authentic. Make sure to upload pics, looking forward to seeing what you decide.

Dan Gurney rally stripes in Yellow?

That is certainly an option :) Either that or something like this:

102937

But seeing as I wont have the big white stripes maybe I could do the pit stripes on both sides.
