Today I got to install some accessories. I installed the interior and DS mirrors as well as the Sun Visors and Wind Wings. The Mirrors and Wind Wings went on just as the instructions from FFR dictated. The Sun Visors required a slight modification. According to a post from Jeff Kleiner a while ago, the small screw holes in the windshield frame get filled with chrome and thus make it very hard/impossible to install the 6-32 screws. In fact I guess that many people use metric screws. Well, I followed the post from Jeff Kleiner and purchased some square nuts and slide them into the "track" at the top of the windshield frame. This worked really well and I used a small amount of blue loctite on the screws to insure I do not have an issue in the future. So, I did have a little problem with the square nuts and sliding them in. The nuts that I got seemed to be just a little thick to slide into the track so I had to take them all to my bench grinder and just add a small bevel to the two sides that slide under the lip of the windshield frame. Once I did this, the nuts slide in just fine and everything tightened down exactly as expected.
Here is a LINK (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?20845-FFR-sun-visors&p=235927&viewfull=1#post235927) to Jeff Kleiners thread about the sun screen mounting modification. Super Simple....
Here are some photos.... I left the protective paper on the wind wings and sun visors for now. I did remove the paper around the screws and brackets.

And so 133 days ago (Aug 19th 2018) I began my Factory Five 20th Anniversary MK4 Roadster. Number 8 of 20. I had an internal mindset that I could have it completed (minus paint) by March 2019. Well other than installing my headers/side pipes that are going to be here next week and the license plate holder, I've completed well before my planned completion date. I can't wait until I get those headers and hit the road... (oh, DMV may slow things just a little bit, but not much)
Earlier today I was just walking around and around the car; admiring all the work as well as looking for something else to do.
I know that there will always be little things to do, but that is what rainy days are going to be for. Even though it is still up on jack stands, here are some photos of what I have accomplished in the past 133 days...

While I'm awaiting my new headers to arrive and title from DMV I'm continuing to work on some of the little things left to do.
Over the past few days I brushed up the aluminum cover plates for inside the trunk and installed the Fuel Tank sender unit and fuel pump covers. I'll wait to install the battery cover plate for when I'm done disconnecting the negative terminal all the time... Long time back, before I sprayed the Lizard Skin Sound control, I installed 10-32 nutserts for these panels. I will most likely finish the trunk with carpet at some point, but for now it is just the Lizard Skin and the shinny brushed aluminum. The aluminum also has 3 coats of Shark Skin on them.
I also installed the wiring for the tag light and have also taped in place the LED strip that came with the kit as a courtesy light onto the trunk lid. There is a nice ridge that is molded into the lid of the trunk that I will permanently stick the LED strip to once the paint is completed. Until then, it is just going to be held in place with some clear tape. I'll have this light wired to the tail/tag lights. This way, when those lights are on, the trunk light will be on. I may / may not install some kind of either motion switch or simple on off switch. I really don't care if the light is on in the trunk all the time. I'm very pleased with how much that little LED strip lights up the trunk.
I'm not sure if I posted this before, but I have also installed Red LED light strips over each foot box for the interior convenience lights. The are wired to the appropriate wire in the RF Harness and go on when you turn the headlight knob to the extreme counter clockwise position.
Here are some photos...

Receive the last set of fully assembled test headers today. These are stainless steel, 3" bolt pattern headers. I'll be using these for a while to be sure that everything is just right and then in the near future I'll be receiving my final set that will be fully polished. It looks like the fit is just about perfect, only a very minor tweak needs to be done during the assembly of the final permanent set. Once completely confirmed, there will be a new option available for MK4 Builders with the BluePrint Engines 302/Aluminum Head engines. More information will be available soon.
So for now, I've installed the side pipes and everything looks great... (The Compound 302 Polish should be here on Monday and the side pipes will be shined up and I'll hopefully get the brown off of them, waiting for amazon)
Planning to also install some vinyl striping to the body to add some jazz to it until it gets sent off to Jeff K next fall.
I've sent all the papers in to the DMV for the title and am just in the waiting stage for that....

Ok, exhaust system installed and it's down on all fours.... Today I rolled this thing out of the garage and took some photos... Then took it for a drive around the neighborhood. I would have put 100 miles on it if I could have. I settled for about 3. My next step is to get the alignment completed professionally and hope for the DMV Title/Registration this week. I did not want to tear up the tires or get a ticket. So for now, just a big grin. Who knew Gel Coat could look so good!!!

She looks great! Nicely done. So, are we going to run a pool to see how many miles you put on her between now and when you send her to Jeff for paint?
I agree with you that she looks great in gel coat. I may be doing the same thing as you. I think it makes sense to drive in gel coat, just as a shake down period.
Congratulations on a terrific job!

Great job on getting her done. You made quick work of it. I bet you will put a lot of miles on her over the summer before paint. I was in gel coat legally driving for two months before sending off to paint. Put 500 miles on mine and that was just driving (long way) to work a few times and short spirited drives.

Nice work, Carl. To think you just received the car 5 months ago and are already done (are they ever really, though?!?) is truly impressive. If you feel inclined to stretch her legs a bit when you're legit, drive on up to NoVA - there's a few of us up here just getting started. Congrats on hitting this milestone!

Today was what I can really call my first day out with the roadster. Sure, I've done a couple 2-4 mile drives around my immediate neighborhood, but today, I put 40 miles on the car. LOVED every second of it. I was able to get a good feel for the car and test out the heated seats, heater and the cruise control. All works well. The cruise control does need one minor setting change on the gain and it should be good to go.
Then I finished out the night by taking the car to a Cruise In at the Sonic in Monks Corner, SC. This was hosted by the Low Country Muscle Car club (https://www.lowcountrymusclecar.com/). They have their "Ride of the Month" gathering every 3rd Saturday and the staff at the Sonic pick their favorite car and crown it the "Ride of the Month". You guessed it, Factory Five Roadster #8690 took home the honors on her maiden trip out of the Cobra Cabana where it's been being built for the past 5 months.

All I know at this point is it will be a red with gray stripe. I'm looking at different reds, and so far the Mazda Soul Red Crystal (https://www.repairerdrivennews.com/2017/06/09/mazdas-slick-new-soul-red-crystal-color-might-be-trickier-for-painters/)it getting my vote and some kind of a darker gray... The other night I was adjusting my headlights and realized that the passenger side was significantly dimmer than the drivers side. I remember as I was building things and running the wiring that one side or the other of the RF harness had a smaller gauge wire going to the headlights. I'm guessing it is the passenger side. Has anyone had this same type of issue? I've not had the chance to get under the body and actually look at the wiring yet. I was also going to swap the headlight bulbs just to be sure it is not the headlight itself.

Today I had a chance to do a little trouble shooting and here is what I found out. First thing I did was check my weather pack connections, just wiggled them around a bit to see if that was the problem. No change, the passenger side light was still dim. I also double checked to be sure that both of the bulbs had both low and high beams working. They did. So next, I just swapped out the two bulbs. The bulb that was dim on the PS was also dim on the DS and the other one was just as bright as before... So there is my problem, the bulb is bad... So next I looked at them for the part numbers...
This photo shows what both have on them, they are both marked as exactly the same.
101654
But take a look at the actual Halogen bulbs inside the headlights. The one with the "blue" coloring is the dim bulb and the clear one is the one that is bright. It's like when the bulb assembly was put together, the person doing it grabbed the wrong bulb to install. So I guess it's just going to be the purchase of a new headlight fixture to fix the problem. Fingers crossed that is all it will take.

Went out the other night and bought a pair of Sylvania H6024 Silver Star Halogen headlights (https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/silverstar-5024/lighting---electrical-16777/headlights---fog-lights-25139/headlight-bulb-11519/1395fe3e34c6/sylvania-h6024-silverstar-halogen-sealed-beam-bulb-pack-of/h6024st/4743295?q=SilverStar&manufacturer=true&pos=21). Tonight was the first chance I had to pull the car out and adjust them. Man, these are bright and right. I also took the car around the block a couple times checking the high beams/low beams and they really seem to be good. Oh, and I may have,.... no,,,, I did romp on it with the intent to break loose the rear tires.... easy... No Problem!!! Good times... Now, if SC will just send me a title.... Ugh...
Carl,
You passed up a good reason to convert to H4 bulbs! Glad you resolved the issue.

Let me start out by saying that I fully understand and agree with everyone about the use of the full seat belt harness installed in my roadster. I'm a guy that ALWAYS wears his seat belt in my DD and expect everyone in my car to do the same. On this day described below I was originally planning to take my friend around the block. In my neighborhood, this is about 1 mile of driving; not over 35-40 MPH max and on a very low traveled road. But just after leaving the driveway, the plan changed and I went ahead and drove a bit further. My mistake was not putting on the full harness in the first place, and my second was not stopping and putting them on once I changed my mind to go a bit further. Please, if you are reading this or watching my video know that it is never OK to drive this type of vehicle without the use of a full restraint system. I want to also thank the few that called me out on this.
So about a week ago I had the chance to take the cobra out for a bit of an extended run. This was the same day that I had taken it out to the little cruise in where I won the "car of the month" award.... Here is a video of about an 18 mile "leisurely" drive. I was really trying to get a feel for the steering and the cruise control. The Cruise Control is still not reacting just right, but I'm certain it is just adjustments on the "dip" switches. The steering seems really ok, I'm still wondering about the self centering, but as I drive it, it seems really reactive and right. Perhaps it's just me and I need to get use to the different feel from my front wheel drive focus. Time will tell.

Spent a little time in the garage today and installed the License Tag Bracket/Light assembly. I first completed the modification as described HERE (https://www.ffcars.com/forums/2450086-post59.html)in Jeff Kleiner's thread from a few years ago. I still need to put the bracket extension on to actually raise the plate up into the light fixture. I don't have any metal stock laying around that I like for this so will have to pick some up. I will also most likely have to open the slot cut in the clear plastic a little bit more to allow for the tag to fit.
I'm still waiting, patiently, for SC DMV to send me my title. They told me six weeks and by gosh they are going to use all of the six weeks.

So yesterday, after being very patient with SC DMV and waiting the full 6 weeks + 5 days, I called them to check on the status of my title application. They had told me previously that it will take between 4-6 weeks and not to call until after the full 6 weeks. Funny thing happened; about 1 hour after my call, I get a call from the Title Department asking two simple questions. Questions answered, title issued. I then was able to go to the county tax office to pay my $16 county property tax, took that receipt to the DMV and just like that, plated and legal to drive... I just got back from about a 20 mile, stress free (IE not looking over my shoulder for the police) drive. Grinning the whole time. Even had a Mustang GT and a Camaro SS "rev" their engines at me... Just looked at them and grinned...

Took a long ride down to Savannah to attend a Cars and Coffee and to visit with Dave (DadofThree) to discuss this years Hot Rod Power Tour. I put a total of 330 miles on the car putting my total mileage at over 600 now. During this drive my son rode along with me to see what he thought about riding for that long, to simulate the Power Tour we are planning to do in June. We started out in the chilly 45*/foggy morning, then hit some minor rain, had some hot muggy sun and then a pretty hard down poor.... Drove through it all with no major problems or unexpected results. The care drove and ran very good. Although I was expecting a bit better fuel mileage, not that this is a car to expect that....

And now, I have mine up on jack stands and will do a complete inspection of all of the suspension and other critical components. Change the Oil, Drain and Refill the Coolant, etc over the next few weeks. I also have a few other minor tweaks that I will make along the way.
I have to say, that I have really enjoyed the first 600 miles. I've found the BluePrint Engine's 347 Carburetor motor to provide awesome, responsive power. It really seems to like to run at or above 1800 rpm. I believe that I have a little carburetor adjustments to make to get it right on. While I have never ridden in another cobra to compare the ride, I find that the ride is as expected. Firm, but not teeth jarring. And when turning, it feels like it is on wheels and is very responsive to steering wheel input. I'm enjoying it so much that this morning before the thunder storm hit, I took it for a quick ride to downtown Charleston about 20 miles one way, but the return trip, well it was about 50 miles... Just sayin'
Ready for some TLC and checks....

A couple weeks ago I ordered a no snap tonneau cover and received it today. After following the instructions emailed to me for measuring my car, the fit is perfect. This cover takes me all of abut 60 seconds to install and really seems to be for great quality and workmanship. Phillip & Kay Deal were super easy to work with they can be contacted at wpdeal@gmail.com and they will provide you with any information you need. The cover has a very soft backing on it to protect paint and uses a bungee cord that will clip to the end of the exhaust pipe to hold it down. Even with my cubby hole in the trunk, it will fit in the trunk without any problem. And if I have a lot of stuff in the trunk, it will lay across the top of the seats, under the shoulder belts with no problem as well.

So on 3/23/19 during a 200 mile drive to visit Patrick's Build (MechanicalKnowledgeNone) in Columbia I surpassed the 1000 mile mark on my Gel-Coat driver. I will say that ALL 1000 miles have been fun and exciting. I just started really driving it one month ago when I received my license tags. So for this post I thought I would share a few photos and also some knowledge learned along the way.
1st I'll start with some good knowledge that most new builders should keep in mind.
- Somewhere in the manual I read that after you drive your run/drive your car you should re-tighten the hose clamps. Radiator, Water pump, heater hoses, oil lines, etc. Well I've found that these should be checked more than just after one run. I've actually found they will need to be checked after each run until they don't get any tighter. Each time I came back in, usually the next day, I was able to easily tighten them a little bit more. And I'm not talking about wrenching them, I just use a nut driver/screw driver and get a little more. SO, why do I stress this first? The other day, after about 800 miles of driving, I was doing some tuning, specifically I was checking and tweaking the timing. I'm standing there watching and enjoying the sound of my idling engine when the upper radiator hose just popped right off of the thermostat housing neck. It did not throw water or steam everywhere, just popped off and dumped a bit of water on the water pump area. I was able to quickly turn off the engine.. Sure glad it did this while sitting in my yard and not 100 miles from home.
- Oil seepage, I've had a little here and there. Mostly from around the Oil Filter Relocate tubing and adapter on the block. ( I know Paul ) I have to say that at 650 miles when I changed my oil, it was very nice having the filter vertical while removing it and no oil dripping while removing it. I'm contemplating whether I'm going to keep it or try to fix the seepage. I will say that I did find the hose clamps here also need to be snugged up a little after being run awhile. So far this is the only Oil Seepage I've encountered.
I'm running the BluePrint 347ci Carburetor Engine with the TKO and 3:31 gears. I find that the sweet spot for the engine is at about 1800 rpm. What I mean is that it really smooths out. At 60 MPH in 5th I'm at 2200 +/-. Between 40-50 I usually will stay in 4th running right at 1800-2000 rpm. And on my trip yesterday to Columbia, I cruised at 60 for 90% of the trip and all of my stops were usually followed by a very exhilarating run through the gears up to 70ish before hitting the resume button on the cruise. I say this to preference that with all this, I averaged just shy of 18mpg, not that anyone really cares...
During the 650 mile oil change, I removed all of the brake in oil and refilled it with 7 qts of the BluePrint Engines recommended Rotella T4 15w40 oil. Also of course a new oil filter that was provided by the good folks at BluePrint Engines. With my engine, oil pressures are usually right at 55-60 during cruise and about 65 during acceleration. Idle pressure is about 40-45.
As far a performance; Using the options on my GPS Speedometer, I have done a couple of easy 1/4 mile and 0-60 runs. (I say easy because I have the rev limiter set at 5000 rpm and I do my best not to spin the tires) I've only done one 1/4 mile run and it gave me a 12.84 sec @ 110 MPH and my 0-60 was just over 4 seconds. It is crazy, it will hit the rev limiter so quickly. And during the 1/4 mile run, I actually ran it past the 1/4 mile distance and up to 115 as is registered on my Speedo's memory function. The car was smooth and just wanted to go more, but that was a one time run without more proper safety preparations. Oh, about spinning the tires. It can and will do that very easily, but I've been very good on the throttle control as at $420 each, I want to get all the use I can out of my rear tires.
As far as handling, and I preference this with the fact that I've not yet taken it to get the laser alignment or corner weights/ride heights professionally set, It drives like it is on rails and connected to the asphalt. It will change lanes when asked, instantly. And the Wilwood brakes are smooth and it stops on a dime... I just have to carry more dimes with me. I think that once I get a chance to put a pressure gauge on my brake lines and actually set the front/rear bias, It will be that much better.
The Ride is exactly what I expected, firm, but very smooth. Sure, I feel the bumps more than in my daily driver, but my daily driver feels like a boat compared to this. I do not feel any lean in the turns as I suspect the front/rear sway bars are helping with that along with the awesome Koni coil overs...
Ok, this has been a long post, but I've got a lot to say... it's just been amazing to drive. Oh, the heater and heated seats have allowed me to comfortably take it out in 40* weather and with the exception of the air on the back of my neck, I've been very comfortable.
Some Photos.

The other day I changed the oil for the first time. I was right at 680 miles and had the BluePrint Engine's Brake In oil in the engine. Today, I was able to get to the filter and cut it open to inspect it for anything that could be a concern. The Oil Plug is magnetic and it had some black magnetic sludge on it, but nothing of any concern. I was very happy with my findings... next to nothing. Here are some photos of cutting open the filter. I did find a couple very small metal particles that were magnetic and I'm assuming from the machining of the block prior to assembly. I did not see with the naked eye anything of concern, nor did I suspect that I would. The engine is running fantastic and is crazy strong.
To cut open the filter, you could purchase an oil filter cutter or as I have done on many filters from a drag car I used to work on, I use a hack saw around the top edge of the filter. It doesn't take much, clamp the filter in a vice and a few strokes of the saw all the way around. Then, a pair of vice grips on the filter lip and it will open up like a can of baked beans... anyway, you get the idea. Then using a razor knife/box cutter, just cut the filter media all the way around the top and bottom next to the filter frame work. Unfold the filter media and lay it out on the bench, stretch it out and inspect. You want to inspect the side that is toward the outside of the filter, not inside... Of course you can look on the inside as well, but that is the side the filtered oil comes out of so there will not be much, if anything, there...
Here are some photos.

Cutting open and inspecting the filter is a great idea. When I worked GA piston aircraft, we inspected every single filter at oil change time. A few owners went home looking for a new engine after just asking for an oil change. ;)
I would suggest to anyone looking to start doing this... get the cut tool. An inexperienced person with a hacksaw can introduce metal shavings into the top of the filter and when found, suspect its coming from the engine. You can get them for as little as $30-40.

I've been waiting for a good rainy day to complete a project on the interior, Cup Holders. I've had these for a while now and today was the perfect day to get the task completed. Took all of about 1 hour to complete.
I started the project by getting the car up high on the jack stands and getting under it to mark the cross bar. It was a tight fit, but I was able to get the sharpie to mark a small portion of the 3/4 tube. I was then able to extend that with a straight edge. These cup holders are just over 3.5" outside diameter. So using a 3 1/2" hole saw and a little massaging with the Drimal tool I have a good snug, friction fit. * If I have a problem with them blowing out while driving, I'm planning to get a couple larger hose clamps and put them on the underside of them. My trans tunnel cover only takes 4 screws to remove and removal of the shifter so it is very easy.
This is a LINK (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00911UX6A/)to the cup holders that I chose to go with.

A couple more photos from yesterday's cars and coffee... Can't wait to get paint on this thing... FYI, I plan to get the knock offs on this next weekend. I'm just waiting to get the alignment laser checked. I don't want the shop to fool around with them if they need to remove the wheels for any reason.

* So I found that at about 60mph, the cup holders would start to rise up out of the tunnel cover. Remember, they actually had a pretty good friction fit. During another exciting run up to close to 100mph, I had one of them fly up in the air and land between the seats. I will also confirm that there is a huge amount of air that will come up out of that hole. If your thinking of putting a vent in your trans tunnel, you will get a lot of air and it did not seem to be heated by the engine. It was the same temp as putting my hand up over my windshield. My fix to the problem was very easy 3 1/2" hose clamp.

I've been driving my Cobra now for about 2 1/2 months. I've put 1600 miles on it in that time. It is an absolute blast to drive. I've had several videos of me driving it from my point of view but I've never had a chance to watch myself driving it. Today, Easter Sunday 2019, I had the chance to take a drive with my son Matt and he was kind enough to shot some video as I did a few drive-byes. This thing really is cool and a blast to drive. Enjoy this quick video from today's fun.

As some of you may know, I'm taking the roadster on a 2200 mile journey in June. I'm participating in the 2019 Hot Rod Power Tour, 7 days and nights of cruising fun... I'm also taking along BluePrint Engines. I've partnered with them while I'm still in GelCoat to promote their awesome company and save some people some money. So, in the fun of the Power Tour event, I've put a few decals on the car and thought I would share some photos with you all. If you are looking for an engine for your Factory Five, take a long serious look at BluePrint.

Today I was finally able to get #8690 up onto an alignment rack. I had set it up in my garage using string, levels, toe plates, camber/caster gauges etc to get it close. I've put 2300 miles on the car in the last 2.5 months with my setup and have been really happy with the way it's been driving and handling so I know that I was close to good. When all was said and done, I actually had my front set up very close, but my rear was off a bit. Mostly my rear camber was out a bit. I have to say it was a bit strange watching someone else wrench on my car.

This is kind of a duel purpose entry. One to document the completion of over 5000 miles as well as to show some photos from the 2019 Hot Rod Power Tour that I just completed with my 19yo son Matthew. So this past Sunday, Fathers Day, I completed the Hot Rod Power Tour. On this trip, I logged just over 2500 total miles and just prior to leaving, I changed the oil with the odometer reading 2500 miles. I'm having a blast with the car. So far I've only had one minor issue with the radiator fan switch not wanting to turn the fan off when it is at the appropriate cool temp. Simple fix as soon as I find a supplier for a better quality switch. Either way, I wanted to fill you in on the first 5000 miles. I've driven it in the rain, the blazing hot sun and on some perfect 73* days with white clouds in the sky. It drives like it's on rails and is very easy to handle. The BluePrint Engines 347ci Carb motor has run perfectly since day one. I've found that with the idle right at 600 rpm, I get the perfect loping idle that we all like. During the Power tour, I had the opportunity to drag race it on the 1/4 mile as well as try my hand at a autocross track. During the Autocross run, I was really trying to push it hard and actually spun it out. During the drag race, it ran 114mph in 13 seconds and that was after I had to lift just after shifting into 3rd as I broke the rear tires loose and I started drifting towards the center line. That's right, I broke the rear tires loose while going just about 100mph. When driving in the pouring rain, I got wet. (can't believe how many people ask me about having no top and what will happen if it rains) The rain for the most part blew over the windshield, but a lot also drips in at the top of the doors and blows around and back into the car from the back. The good news, with standing water in the floor boards, a towel dries it right up as there is no padding under the carpet. I have a few minor squeaks from body/door/hood/trunk lid rubbing each other as I've not truly/properly gaped them (leaving that for Jeff K) I really like my EPAS (Elec Power Steering) The Cruise Control works really well and it will maintain a good constant speed up and down hills. What can I say, it is just a fun car to drive and I drive it as much as possible.
Here is the Drag race, I'll put the autocross video in the next entry.

Shortly after beginning the driving of my MK4 I developed a squeak in the rear. I had read about the different possibilities, Sway bars, Control Arms, etc... All of mine have been properly lubricated and actually re-lubricated with no luck in getting ride of the squeak. So after the Hot Rod Power tour and about 5600 miles now, I decided to really get under there and find this squeak. I actually found it by accident, while cleaning the underside of the car after many miles of rain driving. While cleaning the bottom of the fuel tank, the squeak showed up. Watch the video and the photos show how I have addressed the issue. I sure hope this help others that could have this same issue.
Be sure to turn up your speakers for that awesome fingernail on the chalkboard sound...
https://youtu.be/Inar5oYaxYI
So once I discovered exactly what was causing the squeak I came up with the idea of putting a good thick rubber cushion between the tank straps and the rear edge of the tank flange where the metal to metal rubbing was causing the squeak. I found that my left over piece of 3/8" fuel line would make the perfect addition to my build. I cut two pieces of fuel line, each 1" long and then slit the both. The idea is that the slit will go over the edge of the fuel tank and provide insulation between the tank and strap. One added note, I also put the insulator as far around on the top of the tank edge as I could so that it is actually sandwiched between the black plastic cap that you put in the tank support tube. So now it is held very firmly in place by to points, the edge of the tank and the strap as well as the support tube. Tightened up the tank straps and there is now zero squeak. Problem Solved...
In this photo you can see the inside of the tank strap and where it was rubbing against the edge of the tank causing the squeak.

Well the day sneaked by me... 8/18/19... that was the day that marked one year since I purchased my 20th Anniversary Mk 4 kit from a private seller and started the journey. As of 8/16/19, I have 7500 miles on my gel coat driver and in only a month or so until it goes to the painter to "complete" the build. That's 7500 miles in just 2 days shy of one full year since I purchased the unbuilt kit. During the past 7 months of the full year, I've been driving and having a blast with my Mk4. I officially started driving it on Feb 2nd when I received my title and tags. In June I took it on the 2019 Hot Rod Power tour and completed the entire tour (a Long Hauler) with my son by my side. During that 8 days, I clocked 2700 +/- miles and drove many hours in the pouring rain. I can say that everything worked flawless. The suspension, the BluePrint 347 engine, the electrical, everything. I'm so glad that I purchased this fun beast and look forward to many, many more miles. I actually drive my Mk4 more miles each week than I do my daily driver. I built it to drive, have fun and show it off and so far it has done all of that. Here are some photos of my journey for the past 12 months.
I have been asked many times how did I build it in only 3 months.... my answer, I was able to work on it for 4 hours each day M-F and 12 hours on Saturdays... I did this every day/week until it was done. I never felt like I was rushing. I never cut any corners. I torqued each and every bolt as needed. I can say that I'm very proud of the workmanship and detail that I put into this car. I'm very lucky to have a gel coat body that looks very good from Factory Five and can only imagine how it is going to look with the brightest red possible and gray strips... that is coming soon...
The friends and support that I have made/received here on the forums have been great. If you are someone new and just looking at one of these builds. You are at the right place.

On another post, a person commented that was along the lines of money would be better spent on a Corvette. Perhaps for some. But they would not be able to have your memories and experiences and make a post like this.
Congrats and looking forward to seeing it painted. I'm hoping to be able to drive mine to Huntington in spring of 2020.

Checkbook hot rodders will never know the joy of "Built... NOT Bought".
Yeah... we "bought" the kits. But each and every one of us doing this can honestly say we're "intimate" with every single nut, bolt, washer, rivet, on our cars... Every Single One!
IMO...
Swapping out a trim bezel for a piece of chrome bling does not qualify as "wrenching on your car"...
Bolting on a completely engineered "system" for better this or that does not qualify as "wrenching on your car"...
Sitting and staring at your newly bent brake lines and 2nd guessing if what you just made will work or kill you qualifies as "wrenching".

Last weekend, I took the BluePrint Engines Factory Five 20th anniversary MK4 roadster up to Darlington and showed it off in the Ford Performance Corral along with about 30 other Bad Asp Fords. Even had Edsel Ford stop by and say hello to us. During that 250 mile round trip, my odometer rolled all 7777s and then this weekend, it rolled over 8000. All I can say is that I'm enjoying driving this thing more and more every time I get in to it. So just a quick back story. I bought the complete 20th anniversary kit second hand in Aug 2018, pretty much finished it in December 2018 and titled/tagged it on Feb 2nd 2019. So in just 7 months I've racked up 8000 miles. I completed the 2019 Hot Rod Power Tour in June as a Long Hauler, completing all 7 cities in 7 days, and added a couple stops on the way back. That was 2700 miles of pure enjoyment. Even the rainy days. Time with my son riding through some of the most beautiful roads our country has.
During the 8000 miles, I have found some little things that I've tweaked but for about 95% of everything else, I've been absolutely happy with everything about his car. The BluePrint 347 Carb motor has purred the entire time and never let's me down when I step on the "go" pedal.
Now, it's time to get the car ready for Jeff Kliener to do his amazing work with the body and paint. I'm removing the BluePrint Engine decals along with all the others this week. (I'm sure that will cost me about 53 HP) I'll be installing the brand new custom made GAS-n fully polished stainless steel headers and side pipes and then just waiting for that call from Jeff to say... get it up here.
While out on my drive this weekend, I found a small county park and stopped to take some final photos of it with the decals all on it. I've actually really become accustomed to having them and really like the look, but can only imagine what Jeff is going to make it look like. So I wanted to have some decent photos to remember it this way. I also have some really nice, long, secluded roads that gives me some opportunity to make a couple "performance" runs. I've shown photos below of a one of my 0-60mph runs along with a 1/4 mile run. These times are as recorded by my GPS speedometer so not sure really how accurate it is but either way, I have fun as I always do.

Nothing really important, but on 9-22-19 I rolled the odometer over 8,690 miles...
Only significant to me because that is the serial number of my car..... (7 mo and 20 days on the road)

During a drive this morning I noticed a very minor vibration... actually could be better described as I heard the vibration. It was a strange one, was not really dependent on speed. It came in went in a pattern of about 1 second on and 1 second off. then on and then off... over and over... Then after I had stopped for a few minutes in a parking lot to look at my phone, I was just sitting in neutral, idling and I started to hear a squeak. As I started to drive off from the parking lot, the squeak got very loud and then a the a vibration began to be felt. Fortunately I was only 1 mile from home so I got it home and up on jack stands and pulled the clutch fork cover off and this video shows what I found. Note: the squeak in the video is not what I was hearing, I was hearing the bearing squealing.
WARNING: Irritating sound on video... think finger nails on the chalk board while listening to this video...

The good news is I was about to pull the engine and transmission out to send them back to BluePrint Engines for some upgrades and I believe that this will be covered by warranty. Either way, my fun daily driving will be put on hold for a little while.

So over the past couple months, I removed the engine and transmission and sent it all back to BluePrint Engines. They quickly completed some work on the engine as well as repaired the transmission clutch and trow-out bearing. All of this was completed under their awesome 50,000 3 year warranty at no cost to me. The engine is back in and everything is running great. I have to give a huge shout out to the gang at BluePrint Engines as they did all this work with the ease. Ken and Josh in Technical Support and of course Johnny Mac were all fantastic.
I scheduled to pick up my engine at the FedEx Distribution center. It was much easier than trying to deal with the lift gate at my house (I have a dirt/grass driveway). They loaded it into my truck with a forklift and then I just backed my truck into my garage and used the engine hoist and cargo straps to lift the entire crate. Lifted it up a couple inches and drove the truck out from under it. Then I just moved it to where I wanted it and set the crate down on some jack stands.
119580 119585
A lesson learned during the removal of the engine is that it is much more difficult with the body on to put it in and out. The reason is that the balance bar / chain connects to the rear of the engine head. When the body is on, that location is actually under the body and you can not lift the engine up off of the engine mounts with out the balance bar hitting the body. ALSO, even the 2 ton engine hoist that most everyone uses is not long enough to reach over the front of the car (with body on) so you must go in from the side. I will say that putting it back in was sure a lot easier knowing the issues that I had taking it out. I actually was able to use a cargo strap wrapped through my intake manifold at the rear of the engine to attach my balance bar so that it did not hit the body when I was putting the engine back in.

While the engine was out I took the opportunity to switch over from the cable throttle to a mechanical throttle linkage. I purchased all the parts from McMaster-Carr and have to tell you, it is night and day different from the cable. I also installed the Russ Thompson Throttle Pedal assembly that mounts to the 3/4" tube. If you are just building your car now and are even remotely considering a mechanical linkage, do it before you get you engine in and button up the foot box... you be glad you did.
I used all stainless steel. 1/4" threaded rod, 3/8" SS solid rod, SS nylon self-locking nuts and under the hood I covered the rod with a cut to length piece of SS 5/16 brake line that I polished with some metal polish to give it a high mirror finish. I picked up the levers for under the hood and in the foot box from Speedway motors.
I had to tap out the ends of the Speedway Throttle Arm to match the threads on the ball joint linkage and then put a self locking nut on it as well.

Note, the extra rod length next to the fire wall has been cut off to appropriate length.

So as the time gets closer and closer to taking my car up to Jeff K for his magic, I've been getting ready. One of my goals with the car is to travel and stop in a "fun" area, unload my MK4 and cruise... and camp, and cruise. So a couple weeks ago, I picked up this 40' Millennium trailer. 12'+ Living Quarters and 20' Garage. The previous owner was a Porsche guy and I've since taken all the decals off the sides of the trailer. I also installed some cool E-Track tie downs and loaded the MK4. It all fits great and pulls fantastic. I'm really getting excited to know that my first real trip with it will be up to Bloomington IN...

Hi Carl,
I too have the BPE 347 and I'm getting ready to install the engine/transmission in a few weeks. I bought the Forte's mechanical linkage and RT throttle pedal. I was waiting to install the the engine and then install the linkage. Do you think it would be a good idea to go ahead and install the mechanical linkage now? Or is it OK to wait until the engine is in to mock up the linkage and get the measurements correct?
Thanks!

Well.... I would say it is much easier to install it without the engine in the way. This is not to say it couldn't be done with the engine installed, but it would have been much more difficult.

I've been working on the back wall of the garage while my 20th Anniversary #8690 is off at Jeff Kleiner's for paint and body for a few weeks. This is a work in progress. I still have to get a Factory Five Racing metal logo ordered and put up and polish up the old FFR stainless side pipes. It is getting so close to graduating this 20th anniversary Mk4.
The red paint is actually the same epoxy that I have on the floor. I have about 3/4 gal left over so I figured I would use it. The plan currently is to have the same stripes on the car (of course) Metallic Pewter with the black border stripe. Of course, if this changes, I'll just mix up some more red epoxy and start over. Either way, I think it will look pretty cool once 8690 is back home.

Carl,
If you do not mind and to save me going through your thread, how do you have your seats mounted.
I am 5' 11" and feel like I might be sitting slightly higher than you appear in your car.
My seats are on the F5 sliders, with a little tilt up in the front.
I am not having any issues other than, I feel just a little high in the car.
I am contemplating, pulling the slider on my side and mounting to the floor with a little angle.
Just do not know if the I will miss the slider. I have mine to the rear max distance.
Thanks for any information.

I have mine mounted directly to the floor. On the DS, I have a 1.5" lift using some spacers over the bolts in the front and flat in the rear to give it that slight tilt back. They are about 1/2" away from the back wall at their closest point. On the PS, I have about a 2.5" lift in front and 1" lift in the rear. This is for my short friends so they can see over the dash... but you do not really see the difference unless you are specifically looking for it.

Have you considered the Breeze seat mounts? The put the rear of the seat on the floor, the front elevated about 2", and give you about 3" of front to back adjustability. The front to back isn't slider "convenient", but allows you to reposition the seat without drilling new holes in the floor.

I have considered one, but for some reason have not gone that route.
Originally, I did not like the idea of not adjustable by lever.
I might change my mind when I pull the seat and see what kind of hole alignment I am seeing.
Thanks for the suggestion.

That is where I got the idea of tilting the front. But I wasn’t gonna pay all of that money to do something I could do with literally three dollars worth of Hardware. I do not need to move my seat forward or backwards for any reason that I know of. So at the moment anyway I’m pretty happy with it.

Regarding your chassis dolly, the 21" lift seems like it would be a convenient height to work at. This may be a dumb question, but how did you get the car off of the dolly when the time came for the first start?

Do you really want to know the true balancing act that I went through? LOL.
It was a combination of wood blocks under jack stands and floor jacks. It was a little bit of a hassle, but it was only one time.
Just remember, if you build the dolly as I did, use wood glue and several 8" long lag bolts. Mine was solid as a rock when it was done.

It looks like only a week or two more before I will be able to show the world my completed and graduated 20th Anniversary Mk4. Based on my most recent conversation with Jeff on Oct 25th he said it would be about 10 days before he would have the final sealer/primer on and ready for color. I can only guess that I should be getting it around next weekend, November 13th or so. I'm not 100% sure yet... It's been a long patient 120+ day wait since it was dropped off on July 10th. Final colors have been selected and based on my last conversation Jeff should have the final sealer/primer on it by now.
During that Oct 25 conversation, I asked Jeff to send me my Roll Bar beauty rings so that I could polish them up. He sent them right away and I did my thing and sent them back. Here are a couple before/after photos of those rings.

As the day approches that I get to see my completed paint and body work I've been tinkering around. Tonight I was packing the trailer for the trip and thought, what the heck, let's polish up the wheel knockoffs and take them along so I can install them for the pickup photos. I would say I spent about 10 minutes with each one of them at the bench grinder with the polish wheel.
Here is the before photo. And for the record, I thought they looked pretty good at this point.
139104
and here is an after photo taken in the exact same position and lighting.
139105
I found it really hard to take a photo of them and do them any justice so here are a couple photos that really show the mirror finish I was able to obtain. Notice the reflection of the towel and the Sharpy.

And a couple more photos received from the painter today with the rear over riders in place and showing the inside of the trunk lid. Now I have to clean up that truck and finish it out. Still trying to decide exactly what I'm going to do there. Most likely just some simple short pile gray carpet with the aluminum cover plates over the top of it.

This weekend will mark the end of a long 23 weeks. I'm getting my car back from the painter. I'll be making the drive up to Bloomington IN from South Carolina to load it up and bring it home. The paint and body work on it looks amazing. I've looked at all the photos I've posted on several different computer and phone screens and the Porsche Carmine Red looks different on all of them. I can not wait to see it in person. The plan is to also have Chad's (CV2065) car and mine side by side for some photo ops on Sunday... Chad's car is painted with the same color, but with different accents and stripes... Should be a great opportunity. More to come...
The strip is actually a metallic gray that was color matched to the Halibrand wheels. The lighting on these photos do not do the stripes justice.

Back in July, I transported my build to Jeff Kleiner in Bloomington IN for him to do his thing. Now, today I have it back home in my garage and can start the process of final cleaning (sanding dust) and assembly. Very close to final graduation.
So here is what has transpired of the past week. On Saturday, I was a very happy camper picking my car up from Bloomington. I had made arrangements with Chad (CV2065) to pick up his car from Spotlight Custom Cars in GA and transport it down to his home near Orlando. This worked out great as I had made prior arrangements with Mike at Spotlight to do a final cut and buff after Jeff completed his body and paint work. When I arrived in GA, Chad and I were able to put the two cars together to really show the Porsche Carmine Red off. Both cars have the same exact color but with the different stripes and accents. I chose to chrome/polish everything on mine and added the metallic gray stripes with black accents and Chad blacked out everything. Here are some great photos.

It's Christmas Eve Morning, 5:00am. I just woke up and the first thought on my mind was the beautiful Factory Five 20th Anniversary Mk4 that is sitting in my garage. I just walked out, turned on the 15, 4 ft long LED shop lights and lit the garage up like the operating room of your local hospital (67,500 lumens). Bam, it really hits me, Santa came early. Look at the body work results that Jeff Kleiner gave me. In earlier posts, I shared several photos that Jeff Kleiner sent me of the body work he was doing on the car. I truly did not understand how his experience and knowledge of these cars and the work he was showing in those photos would create the final outcome that it did.
Look these photos, NOT for the shinny Porsche Carmine Red w/metallic gray stripe paint job, everyone can see that, but rather look at the fitment of the panels, the precision of the gaps and cutouts. The body work and adjustment made to the hood, trunk and door hinges. I remember when I put it together in gelcoat how much trouble I had getting it to come close, and now I realize just how far off I really was.
This is what you pay for when you want and get great body work on your car.
Notice the door and body alignment, spot on.

So I'm really trying to finish off some of the final check boxes. One of the big ones was the door sills. I've been kicking around the idea of something a little different. Remembering back to my 1970 Mach I and other older cars with the aluminum door sill cover plates and wanting to try to emulate that. Here is what I came up with. I completed the passenger side and have plans for something special on the driver's side, I also ran out of the edge molding I used. Here is what I did.
First, I had to trim off the total width of the aluminum door sill for the passenger side. The Driver's side was a perfect fit. I broke out the rivet spacing tool and marked the panels for rivet holes and drilled them and then drilled out the 3/4" tube to match.
143088 143087
One challenge that I was trying to figure out was the transition from carpet on the side panel to the edge of the door sill without having a sharp edge showing. I came up with the idea of using some plastic corner guard from Lowe's and some edge molding. I had to use the heat gun on the plastic edge guard to get it to bend without cutting and having a gap in the two corners. What I ended up with was a custom bent piece that fit perfect. I then painted them with Rust-oleum brand bed liner texture flat black. The goal was to basically have this piece just blend in with the carpet and the edge molding. I scuffed up the plastic corner guard with 80 grit sand paper to be sure the bed liner had something to hang onto.
143089 143090 143091
Next I used 320 grit sand paper and created the brushed aluminum look that I wanted on the door sills. Straight strokes back and forth many, many times. Then I taped up the freshly sanded flat surface and scuffed up the vertical portions so that I could paint them with the black bed liner as well. After the bed liner dried, I pulled off the tape, ran some 320 grit back and forth on it to clean it up one last time and then used Shark Hyde to coat the bare aluminum prior to final assembly.
143092 143093
143094 143095
143096
I've run out of the edge molding so I'll finish up the driver's side later in the week. After that I'll reveal my planned surprise for the driver's side.

Getting closer to graduation. Prior to going to paint, I had fully fit and prepped the cover plate for the opening in the trunk lid. Today I installed the LED light strip. (the one that comes with the kit) I had it previously held up on the trunk with some basic clear package tape. Today, I pulled the wax paper off the self adhesive and placed the LED strip up on the lip edge that goes across the width of the trunk. In this place, you can not see it unless you are actually looking up at the inside of the trunk. I drilled a small hole for the power wire and connected it to the tag light. This way, anytime the parking/headlights are on, the LEDs are on. I then completed the rivet install of the cover plate. Check mark completed.
143097 143098
Also installed the Door Straps. Pretty straight forward...
143099
Installed a small fire extinguisher between the seats also. I used three 1/4" x 20 Nutserts and some stainless steel button head screws to mount it.

Like the filler plate for the trunk lid hole...
You may want to rethink the trunk illumination. I've got LED strip lights in the bed of my DD pickup, hooked up to the parking lamp circuit as well. I've found it to be a PITA. When I need something out of the bed, I light up the damn neighborhood turning all 4 corners of the truck on.
It may be too late for you, but this is what I did on #9365... Or maybe a mercury switch from an old thermostat?

I've had them this way since day one. I've not had any problems and, they are inside the trunk, not out in the open bed of a truck. I do, however, like the idea of a mercury switch. I could easily put that under the cover plate. Oh, and those little incandescent lights on the corners of this will surly not light up the neighborhood. But I will tell you, that little LED light strip sure lights up the trunk.

I get a lot of honks, thumbs up and "can I take a photo" encounters. And driving it is always a blast. Now that it is highly polished up and ceramic coated, I'm almost afraid to drive it. One of the side effects of the polish work is that the "Boogers" show a bit more, but the shine keeps the lookers mesmerized on the "whole picture."
I can't say enough about Mike Bowan's @ Spotlight Customs in GA cut and buff and a local friend, Mike K, for his extreme paint correction and ceramic coating work done most recently. The combined efforts of these two have really brought out the Carmine Red's rich color that it looks like you can reach into. The wheels were also paint corrected and polished/ceramic coated.

So I've put about 12,300 miles on the MK4 so far and I've never liked the license tag just..... there.... No frame, just the bare edge of the tag. So I did this... I really like the way it looks and it, IMO, really cleans up the look... The edging does not go into the light, but just up to it. After I put it onto the tag, I then used plyers and crimped it down all the way around it to flatten it and insure that it doesn't come off.

I sold my home in SC and have some property I'm working/living on. That being said, I'm finding a whole different group of auto enthusiast to hang out with. Recently I was able to join a group to drive the "Tail Of The Dragon" in TN along with a couple other popular mountain roads. Here are a few photos from that day. 12 hours of driving, over 400 miles and about 200 of those were all VERY spirited and adrenalin pumping. The BluePrint Engines 347 ran flawlessly and the car handled like it was on rails. It was a BLAST. You can see in the photos just how flat the car's suspension drove. Other drivers that followed me even told me they never saw any role or squat. And they were all very impressed with the handling and acceleration I had out of the curves. What a great day with a great car.

I like that color scheme :) What were the trade names or color codes you used?
Thanks,

Well I know I have not been on the forums much lately, but that doesn't mean I'm not lurking around and even driving around. The other day while visiting a friend about an hours drive from home, I decided to take the Mk4 out for a fun drive. I arrived and visited my friend and as I was leaving, I happen to look down and there it was.... 15,000 miles on the odometer. The BluePrint Engines 347 is running fantastic (only about 5000 miles on it) The car handles like it did when I built it. I inspected a few things the other day on the front and rear suspension and did not find anything of concern. Overall, I love this car. I love driving it and I LOVE the fact that I BUILT IT...
