On to finishing up the carpet. This took a little longer than I thought. The rest of the carpet fit well with minor trimming. I did show the carpet to my upholsterer, and he mentioned that it was pretty good grade of carpet to have come with the kit. Not much of a carpet connoisseur, but nice to know it will last for a bit.

I followed Edwardb's lead and had some edging sewn into edges of the console carpet as well as the sides where the speakers are. Makes it look nice and finished!

I did have a heel pad sewn into the carpet as well as a side pad on the right side of the accelerator pedal. A local marine shop did it for me for $20. With the new footbox expanded out, the side pad looks a little funky, but serves its purpose. I have about an inch of clearance between the pad and pedal, but may shave off another 1/16" or so off of the pedal just to be sure in case the carpet settles a bit, which is why its missing in the picture.

Speaking of carpet, I had enough left of my trunk carpet from FFR to make two sets of spare floor mats. I traced the pattern off of the Cobra mats I bought from Finish Line, then had the same place sew in a binding. I tried my hand at the DIY binding and it doesn't work out that great for tight corners. Even the marine shop had to cut into the corners a bit to get around them then sew them back. I'll be sending the second set to BadASP!

Finally, put my door speakers in and they look/sound great. I bought the 6" grills do match off of ebay (Lucky find) but had to cut about 1/4" off of the side of the cover for it to sit flush as the 2" tube was a little tight.

E-brake boot is one of the last things to go on before the seats go in for the final time. I forgot to put in rivnuts before I carpeted, so I think I'm going to rivet the boot. I found some large headed black rivets that will fit the bill. Either that or I'll use finishing washers with normal sized black rivets for more of a custom look. Either way, If I need to remove the boot, its just a few rivets to drill.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/de877cc6-d498-4b1e-b3eb-5983a412cd9b-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://beta.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/de877cc6-d498-4b1e-b3eb-5983a412cd9b)

Now I just have to finish up the seat belt trim rings, seat belts and final footbox side panel with carpet...and the body can go on!

That side pad next to the accelerator pedal is a good idea. I need to figure out how to get this into my nearly finished roadster. The problem for me is, pedal application is not as accurate as it could be because the carpet is so close and it resists foot movement.

Work got in the way this week and didn't accomplish much until today. During the week I did get a chance to secure the e-brake boot and add the Polk audio badging to the speakers. I found some very large headed 3/16" rivets on Amazon, and used those for the e-brake boot. They look great and just need to drill out if I need to access in the future. Not much, but hey, how do you eat an elephant?

I did get some stuff done today though. I did a final round of greasing, hitting all of the nipples front to back. The Royal Purple Ultra Performance grease has always been a favorite of mine, as well as other Royal Purple products. The color makes it easy to determine what is what if I'm getting a leak somewhere. I also bought some new nipple caps, as throughout the build, seems like I'm missing a few.

I modified my foot pedals. Because I had less clearance than I thought once the carpet and side pad was in, I cut the gas pedal to a scallop shape. This not only looks great to me, but gives me plenty of clearance to the side. I also modified my brake and clutch pedal, by shaving 1/8" off each side, giving me an additional 1/4" of space between the two pedals which makes a world of difference.

Guess what also came last week. I was debating on whether getting the Finish Line door panels or Herb's. After speaking to Finish Line, I guess there was a batch that wasn't covered all the way to the corners, and they were not sure when a next batch would come in, so I ordered Herb's. Man, these things are heavy duty quality and very nicely done. Pictures do not do them justice. I'm sure the Finish Line ones are nice but glad I picked up these. Thanks Herb!

Now that I've got just about all of the loose ends in the cockpit done, I added the console cover. I attached with the 3M dual lock velcro in 6 places under the cover. Very secure. I'm actually hoping it comes off easy if needed. Only issue I have here is that I must have mis-cut my console cover hole about an inch or two too far to the rear, as the shifter just makes contact with the cover in first and third gears, and this is without the trim ring in place. I didn't factor in the plush of the carpet or the thickness of the material wrap. I'm not about to unravel all of that and have to re-cut and re-upholster, so I decided to upgrade my shifter. Back to Finish Line where they have a 427 shifter that goes up about an inch or two from where it attaches, which should give me the clearance I need, as the FFR shifter breaks north right after the attachment point. I did want to upgrade earlier, so this just gave me the excuse. It should be here on Monday and I'll report back. Now have to get it powder coated as well.

So while I'm waiting, I treated my seat belts with Scotchguard Sun Shield. Not sure how or if it will work, but I drenched them pretty good and set aside to dry overnight.

After they dried, I installed my seat belt trim rings, seats bolted in for the final time, and seat belts secured. The red Cipher seat belts are nice and have some eye catching contrast to the seats, as the car is going to be Torch Red as well. Seat belt attachment points were easy to access, even with the seats in, as the Cipher belts have clips, although the attachment points in the trunk might be a challenge if I ever need to remove them. Just not user friendly when it comes to detaching off of the eyelet, as you need two hands and space is tight. The fastening mechanism is miles ahead of the Simpsons. Very nice and user friendly for passengers, as they are similar to a modern style.

I have a ton of extra fabric that needs to be trimmed off then I'll singe the ends to keep from unraveling.

Tomorrow I'm going to install a bracket to secure the lower radiator Boig tube to the frame, double check my wiring and lights, and drill for my elephant ears.

Hey Chad,

Saw your post on the e-brake boot. I wanted to share a picture of what I did with mine; snaps!

Your car is looking great!

What's up guys. Those snaps look great Dave. I didn't mind putting something a little more permanent as I don't ever plan to take it off. I may not even really use the E-Brake too much. Seems like the design could be better overall.

Scotchguard came from Amazon. We'll see if it passes muster. Thanks for the feedback!

Well, had to pull my headers again. The ceramic coating started to powder in a couple of areas. Figured I needed to put this to bed once and for all. This time I took them to the only true ceramic coater in town. Couldn't believe that there is only one. He took one look and couldn't believe that they were given back to me like that. Lesson learned. Ceramic coating is not an easy process and you need to be sure the shop you choose is not just a glamorized powder coater looking to moonlight. Never works out. I should have them back by Thursday and will post some pics.

Also, my Speedhut Tach started acting wonky again, so I pulled it and sent it back to Speedhut. They are replacing it and should have it back by next week. Again, better to get this stuff squared away now than when I put the body on. I'm so close and this little stuff is just getting in the way.

In the meantime, I did get my fire extinguisher installed. I know this is another one of those debatable topics where size does matter, but I'd rather have something in the cockpit than nothing at all. I picked up the Drake bracket and a 1.4lb H3R HalGuard Fire Extinguisher from Summit. Came out pretty nice, although might be a little bit of a tight squeeze in the harness if I need it.

One thing I wanted to button up before I put the car back on the ground was to secure the lower radiator pipe. Coming from the Chevy world I have always thought that it was odd the way Ford designed that lower radiator tube and how it just kind of wiggled around down there without support. Sooo....I ordered McMaster Carr #11355T73 Vibration Dampening Clamp. Here's what it looks like:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/7abe6867-e7a2-442f-a92f-f1120a833d4a-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://beta.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/7abe6867-e7a2-442f-a92f-f1120a833d4a)

304 Stainless steel with TPE rubber so it can take the heat. Tapped 1/4-20 bolts with a couple of hardened spacers and installed. Very secure!

3rd time was the charm on my headers. Got them back and they are legit this time. One thing I did change this time around was adding locking header bolts. I had ARP Stainless bolts with garden variety washers and had to tighten them up after what seemed to be every run. Anyhow, not cheap, but worth not having the headache. I bought the Totally Stainless version with the locking conical washers, 1" length and 5/16" head. Xtra long 8mm wrench gets on just about every bolt. Nice product. http://shop.totallystainless.com/productlistheaderbolts.php

Headers came out great and got them reinstalled. Used Remflex 3028 gaskets and anti seize on the SS bolts. Took 20 minutes and they were in. Ceramic coater told me that Matte black really is the only sheen that they will give a warranty on. Seems like they gave Gloss a go and it didn't work out in the long run. I would have preferred Satin, but these almost have a little sheen when the light hits them. We'll see if these bad boys work.

I had some mirrors show up today. Wanted some that would attach to the windshield frame instead of the body. And of course, they came powder coated gloss black. Look great. I'll set these aside for later down the road.

A friend reminded me of the little switch that you use to toggle through the Speedo and set the clock with. I had not given it a home, so used an available hole in the support bracket, right behind the dimmer. Worked like a champ.

Picked up my new 427 shifter from the powder coaters, as well as the e-Brake handle. Should be the last items that need to be powder coated. Man these look great. The shifter setup and color is just how I had imagined it. Nice when a plan comes together!

I will say that the new shifter is leaps over the stock FFR shifter. Not only does it look nicer, but because of the way that it is angled with a little extra height, it is much easier to run through the gears. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Tomorrow I plan to do a final recheck test on my lights, button up the front splash panels, test fit a couple of things on the body and one more go kart run. After that, the body will go on...Finally!!

Agreed. The 427 shifter from ********** looks great. I think that's the only place you can buy one just like it.

That would be great Sigurd! I need to stop by and see your 65 Coupe. Are you back from yet? Just tying up some of the small stuff and hopefully get the body on within the next day or two.

Completed fitting of the elephant ears with nutserts and stainless black screws. I have 8 on each side. Probably too much, but hey, that's been the story of this entire build! I'll be coating both sides of the splash panels with Herculiner. Wasn't aware that they had an aerosol, so should make things easier. By the way, if anyone needs any, the only place that I can find stainless black screws is Albany County Fasteners. They also have black chrome. Even my coveted local Ace that has virtually everything only has the kind that rust after a bit.

Forgot to mention on the last update that my Speedhut tachometer came back to me. Man those guys are fast. I sent it off on a Tuesday and had it back in my hands by the following Wednesday. Said the circuit board was fried and had to replace it. Great service from Speed Hut!

I installed the side pipes back on today and needed to get one final run in before the body goes on. I needed to test my new tach, heat cycle my new ceramic pipes and of course, because its just plain fun. I have a whopping 16 miles on my ride and all seems very good. I was able to get to third gear through the neighborhood and was trying to bed my brake pads in a little. Lot of starting and stopping, but the manual brakes are feeling better than ever. Might still upgrade the pads down the road, but things are looking/feeling good at this point. Can't emphasize how much better that new shifter is.

One other note while driving this morning. I set off my first car alarm...:)

Kind of weird with nothing left to do but get the body on and moving on to that stage.

Blacked out definitely looks good. Did you go powder coat or ceramic on the headers/wheels/side pipes?

And are you also doing the fuel cap, windshield frame, etc.?

Most everything is gloss black powder coated...Frame, all panels, wheels, windshield frame, fuel cap...pretty much everything that can be. The turn signal/tail light bezels, windshield frame and the hood latches were the only challenging areas. Bezels because those lighting parts are very delicate when you take them apart, and can be an issue going back together. The windshield frame because it can get warped during the heating process. I'm going with Optic Armor, so can adjust for that if needed. And the chrome hood latches have some plastic pieces inside, so they can't be Powder coated. I'll be using a 2K epoxy primer and paint for those from Eastwood.

The only area where powder coating won't hold up due to heat is the headers and exhaust. I have the headers ceramic coated and will get the pipes done after paint.

If you haven’t already, you might consider getting another push button for the clock. The gauge kit only comes with one.

Nice work on the seatbelts. I got in in a hurry and made the mistake of not thinking of the floor mat when I put my anti-submarine belt in on the driver’s side. Unexpected benefit of that mistake was when I cut a slot in the floor mat for the belt was the mat stays in place now:).

Thanks for the reminder for another push button cable. Badasp reminded me of that last week and I forgot to order, so just put an order in with Speedhut. Good deal on the floor mats. Mine have been bunching up so ordered a piece of diamond plate that I’ll cut to fit.

I've been really busy wrapping up the year at work, and have my eyes set on getting the body on this week. I keep saying that and was going to make a valiant attempt this weekend, but ran out of black large head rivets so had to order another box of those to complete buttoning up the driver's side footbox. Things seem to be fitting a little tighter than they did way back when during fitment...Hmmm.

Anyhow, I think I left off my last post with wanting to get another push button cable from Speedhut for my clock. I did that. $8 for the cable, but $12 for shipping? It came quickly anyway. I installed it on the inside wall of my glovebox. Looks great and is functional.

I also ordered a piece of 1/4" Diamond Plate for my driver's side floor board. Thought it would of course hold up better than a floor mat, clean up easier, and it just looks down right industrial...and I'm digging it. My cut off wheel was screaming for mercy cutting this stuff, but it came out perfect. I dog eared one side so that it can easily be pulled out as its a definite custom, tight fit. Might get it PC'd black sometime down the road, but happy with it now. Whenever I go to events or shows I'll just put the Cobra floor mats right over it

If anyone is looking to get a piece, there is a seller on ebay that sells remnants for a great price. I bought a 1' x 2' piece for $30.

Another area that ate up some time was my stereo sub and amp plywood deck. I cut it backwards my first time around and just noticed it. The idea was to be able to pull the entire deck out towards the back of the trunk if I needed to, and wasn't able to do it. So, I cut another piece of plywood and made it right. I was able to slide it back some and that also resolved the trunk brackets from hitting my sub.

I had read a couple of threads that said when the trunk was closed, the brackets and struts were putting unnecessary strain on the hinges and possibly bowing the trunk lid, so I sent FFR a note and asked if they could send me the same brackets that they send out with their trunk support kit. I had them within a few days. Here is a comparison between the two. You can see the additional hole and extension for the new brackets that take off that stress. I'll use the rest of Everson's kit.

Last detail I focused on today was the Forte mechanical linkage. I've had no problems with it and the action is nice and smooth. Highly recommended. One thing though are the actuator brackets that come with the kits. It is adjustable so has a large U in the middle of the bracket. The way mine is setup, the pivoting point is at the top of the bracket. Although I have a lock nut on it, I've always thought that if it somehow came loose that I'd be without an accelerator as the entire rod assembly would fall to the bottom and lose its leverage. Would have been a better design if it had graduating holes instead of a giant opening.

So I forged up a small piece out of aluminum that fits right on the bracket itself and should safeguard if something came loose. The rod could only fall maybe 1/8". That would still give me the ability to get home and address. Probably not necessary, but just a safe guard. I did it for the bracket on the inside of the footbox as well.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/0477f679-3b22-462c-911c-3a00ded24f69-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/0477f679-3b22-462c-911c-3a00ded24f69)

I also used some 3/32" roll pins to pin each arm of the mechanical linkage. Added some Locktite and let's hope these arms never want to flop around loose.

Well, renewed some of the torn bulb seal from the first body fitting and awaiting my rivets so I can finish up the footbox. Nothing left to do but get the body on.

Happy New Year to everyone!! I was finally able to get my body on for the last time today. Buttoned up the driver's side footbox, which is an odd experience. Kept procrastinating, ensuring that I didn't forget anything. Very 'permanent' part of the build for me and came together nicely.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/9d7d815c-ce12-4e61-aed9-2726e3066a0a-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/9d7d815c-ce12-4e61-aed9-2726e3066a0a)

Recruited the wife and son to get the body on. Process went smoothly...well, at least for the most part. The first fitting was odd, as the dash was not aligning like it did on my initial fitting a year ago. Can't believe its been that long. Anyhow, the lip of the body over the dash was 3/16" too high, where I could see the 3/4" tube towards the middle area. I lowered the dash with some aluminum brackets on initial fit so that I could access the screws and remove the dash if necessary. I spent a lot of time on this part, as there are no do overs, and thought I had it perfect. So after pulling and pushing the body back and forth for a couple of hours, it just was not coming together at the dash hoop. White flag went up and pulled the body to see what in the heck was going on....

I was thinking...was the body a bit warped from the time on the body buck and just needed to settle? Had I measured wrong the first time? The only thing different was adding the expansion foam and completing the driver's side footbox with the top two panels. Body was resting perfectly on the firewall bulb seal. It was not touching the driver's footbox or dash, so thought it had to be the expansion foam only compressing to 1/4"...raising it up a bit.

So I took off the foam and reinstalled the body. Wife and son are just thrilled at this point. Low and behold, body lip over the dash was exactly like it was before...3/16" too high. So after staring at things again for another hour or so, I ended up pulling the passenger side of the body at a diagonal by the windshield mount in order to even it out at the 3/4" radiator tube side to side. Took at step back at the rear of the car and the dash was suddenly in the right spot. Installed the rear and front QJ bolts, which I think helped things as well once the front grommets were in place and the nose lifted. Moral of the story is that there are so many things going on with the fitment of these cars, one just has to have the patience to keep moving things around if the alignment is not there. A quick text to Jeff Kleiner to get some ideas doesn't hurt either...:)

I bought the larger sleeves from ********** to take up all of the slack in the grommet. They are powdercoated black as well, so these in the picture will be replaced.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/fce2fade-412d-4fb9-90db-f1b4e74c55ad-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/fce2fade-412d-4fb9-90db-f1b4e74c55ad)

I then measured shock tower to wheel well lip front and back and measurements were equal. I also measured floor to wheel well lip, which was roughly 3/16" off but I think this is more due to the shock adjustments and will address later. Overall, looks really good. Front wheels are centered in the wheel wells, with the rears slightly off towards the back, but I've read that is 'normal' for these cars.

I wanted to join the Lexan club for my windshield. Figured now would be as good a time as any to get it done. So I ordered a 24" x 72" sheet from Optic Armor. So, it's essentially a piece of 3/16" polycarbonate that has a special anti scratch coating. Probably similar to a few other brands out there.

Optic Armor came in a heavy plastic clear protective sheeting that is sealed. I made a template out of cardboard for the old windshield. Simple enough, just laid the cardboard flat and set the windshield on top of it. Created a center line on the windshield and cardboard so that I could tell if it moved as I rotated it from side to side while tracing the pattern.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/ebb49954-34e5-46e7-b2ce-ce23af9199fe-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/ebb49954-34e5-46e7-b2ce-ce23af9199fe)

Once completed, I eyeballed the size of the template on the Optic Armor and used 2" blue painters tape to create an outline that I could draw the pattern on. Also served as additional protection to the polycarbonate. Traced the cardboard and I'm in business. Then used a 6tpi wood jigsaw blade which made easy work of the Optic Armor. Just have to take it very slow so that it doesn't heat up while cutting.

Another small project that I need to complete this week is the painting of my hood and trunk handles. These could not be Powdercoated, so using a 2K primer and Black Gloss paint from Eastwood. Started sanding by hand with 320 grit sandpaper with the goal of removing anything and everything shiny. Took about 5 minutes per piece. Look how easy it was to get through the chrome finish. I'll update with the final product.

Your build is looking great! I have had the Lexan windshield upgrade on my mind, maybe this will inspire me now rather than wait until mine cracks. You just ordered the "Cobra Shelby 1962-67" replacement window from Optic Armor?

Thanks

Hey Mark. Thanks for the kudos. The OA piece I ordered was just a straight 24" x 72" 3/16" piece. Lead time is about a week as they cut to order. I think you can order pre-formed products from OA, but its virtually twice the price. I paid $250 plus shipping. Not sure about the Shelby replacement piece, but I'd be wary that it might not fit 100% on an FFR and you may or may not be able to trim to fit. I did ask and they don't have a template for FFR windshields. HTH

No, you'll have to keep the old one from your current windshield.

Finished up the filler tube and rear tail lights today. Gas tank cap came out great. I clocked it to about the 1:00 position to match the outboard center of the cutout. I did not use the FFR provided screws, and drilled out the holes a bit. I substituted with stainless 8-32 x 1" bolts with washers and lock nuts. Cutting the filler tube to 5" as prescribed in the directions was a perfect fit. To continue with my blacked out look, I painted the heads of the screws with 2K gloss black epoxy and let dry overnight. I'll do the same with other hardware as well. Much more durable than anything I can buy and I don't have to wait for it.

I also completed my rear tail lights. This took a little longer than I had anticipated. The pre-drilled holes did not align with the lights, so had to be drilled out a bit. Also, had to enlarge the hole for my weather packs to fit and also so that the light would sit flush. The base of each light is about 1-1/4"...the hole from FFR is only 1". I started with widening the sides to accommodate the weather pack first, then widened the hole from top to bottom after that. Used my shop vac and Dremel tool and not only did a great job, but avoided a huge mess with fiberglass dust.

The washers with the lights seemed a bit small, so I stepped them up to a fender washer instead.

Yes, there is a slight incline with a small amount of additional room. Also comes with some small boards to put into the ends of the seats to keep them from compressing under your thighs.

I took it to Kelly's Upholstery...he's downtown. Kind of quirky, but definitely a car guy. If he does some work and quotes a price, get it in writing. The guy tends to forget a bit, but stands behind his work. I think he may have visited Mary Jane a little too frequently.

Made some progress on the body over the past week. This will probably be my last update to my build thread for a few weeks as I was changing the brake pads on my wife's Jeep.....tried to manhandle a 33" tire pulling it off the hub and SNAP! There goes my bicep tendon. So I'll be getting surgery tomorrow and will be out of two armed commission for a bit.

Anyhow, I was able to get all of my front 3/4" tubes installed. I thought I'd have enough room to insert through the Finish Line grommets, but they were just too tight, so had to open up all the holes a bit with my Dremel sanding drum. I took a page out of Edwardb's playbook and ordered some 7/16" bronze sleeves that inserted into the 3/4" tubes (2 per tube) so that the 6.5" bolt would feed through without any slop. Those are Mcmaster Carr #6391K192. You can see them in place here:

Once those were locked down, I was able to get my front lights and turn signals installed. I did not use the FFR provided hardware, but exchanged it out with SS 10-32 1" long screws, washers and locking nuts. Worked out well, as its pretty easy to get up behind there, even with the low clearance of the car. Only issue I ran into was the "eyebrows". Was contemplating not using them, but just drilled them out and used them in the end. I figured they have to be providing some kind of stability.

I also made some progress on body fitting. First started on the roll bars. I was going to start with the windshield but I broke one of the brass retainers putting the frame back on, so that had to be sidelined until replacements arrived. The roll bar holes had to be enlarged a bit. One mistake that I was making was remembering which way the holes needed to be enlarged, as the bars seem to sit at a slight slant. So you think you have to clearance one way, but its actually the opposite. Or maybe that's just me...:p

Had to take the bars off a few times in order to lightly sand a few burs off of the drilled holes and inside of the tube. Always seems to fit better the first time around! Definitely a friction fit. I may take the roll bar off again before sending to Jeff and have powdercoated again, as I have a couple of scratches that are killing my OCD. The black gloss looks so good....

Up next was the trunk. I thought that it would fit a little better, but Jeff put my mind at ease as its cut large and typically won't sit in the hole on first fit. I need to take off roughly 1/4" off the bottom lip of the lid in order to make it sit down. You can see it sticking up a bit in these photos. When I took it around the block today, nobody seems to care or notice for that matter....at least until the doors flew open around the corners..;) I'll take care of this when the arm heals up and I can get some more done, but for now, looks pretty sweet...at least in head on pictures!

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/1/IMG_1395.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/3eb87575-e781-45d1-8d7a-0e4b8ab91e02)

Doors were next. Passenger side door almost fell into place. Had to push the body in all the way to get it to align with the bottom of the door when securing to the body. Certainly not perfect by any means, but enough to get me rolling down the road until paint and body. Driver's side door was of course a different story. This looks to be a push and pull affair at the bottom. I didn't have the time to get a full adjustment but just enough to fit into the hole. This is another one on my list to fit a little better when I am able. I read that both of these may change a bit when the front elephant ears are installed, but just didn't have the time for additional fitting.

Forgot to mention I also installed my side pipe hangers. I never have liked the sidepipes just hanging in the air, and wanted to get these on before my final trip around the neighborhood for a few weeks.

After reading Kleiner's post about one bolt on the side pipe flange to relieve stress, I kept that in mind as I was hanging the rest of it. My brackets were not aligning completely, so I drilled another hole, 5/16" tap on the 2" tube, and cut off the end of the bracket, only using the large rubber bumper and not two. then I snugged up the bolt on the side pipe flange...not too tight though. I think it will work just fine!

Well Chad, with the end of the hanger cut off and no rigid mount to the chassis at the far end for the weight of the pipes to act against that isn't really doing anything. As you now have it you have two pivots, one at the rubber and the other at the pipe/hanger attachment, but no stationary point. This will not carry any weight or stop the pipe from moving vertically. In this modified configuration you actually could use the second bolt at the pipe and hanger intersection---this would effectively make the hanger an extension of the pipe. Although this would be kind of backwards from how the system was intended to work since it would allow for more movement in both axis than the original design at least it would bear some of the weight.

Finally was able to complete my re-run of my fuel lines. Pretty happy with them with respect to the complexity of the bends. I did have some limitations with the bender I was using, as there is only so close you can get to the next bend. I'd say that 2.5" is about the minimum space you can have in-between bends, but it all worked out really well since many of the tubes are indeed 2". I've got 3/8" lines including the return.

So, starting at the rear of the tank and ran 6AN flexible lines from the tank to the Trick Flow Filter. I used all pre-made Russell flexible lines. They are a little expensive but good quality and you can get them in 12" increments.

https://beta-static.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/0/bd2ca1a9-ba9a-413f-83b2-74e8a254fa24-original.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://beta.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/bd2ca1a9-ba9a-413f-83b2-74e8a254fa24)

Trick Flow to my Ham-Let Fittings and the start of the 3/8" hard lines. I used a 50' roll of NiCopp line from Amazon and used 4 compression fittings. I pressure tested these fittings at 85 psi before I installed in the car just in case I had a leak. Test was good. First time I've used these and very high quality. I got mine for $15 each from Breeze Automotive.

And then to the AN hoses that lead to my fuel regulator. Ideally I needed about an inch or so more tubing, but instead of making another line, I bent the tubing a bit to accommodate my fuel regulator. I have my input coming straight out of the face of the regulator and the output coming straight down. I wanted to have the least amount of hard bends in the flex hose as possible, so I could have cut the output hard line shorter to keep things all parallel, but I was afraid that I might not be able to access the fitting once the engine is in. Looks a little uneven by my OCD meter, but its functional.

The hardline is not flared into the compression fitting. It just fits around the end of the cut tubing. You can get your compression fittings from Breeze. Just let Mark know what you need and he'll hook you up.

Right. Was waiting for that response. No flare required for those Ham-Let Let-Lok fittings that Mark sells. They have an internal wedge that compresses into the line when tightened per the instructions. Rated for PSI much higher than we'll ever see on these builds. Not cheap, but super high quality and will not fail. Quickest and best way to get from a hard line to an -AN fitting that I've found. Used them on multiple builds. Also can't be completely removed once installed. So keep that in mind.

Over the past few weeks, I've been getting back into the garage doing little things. I was able to get my exhaust hangers rehung. FFR sent me out a set for no charge. They are awesome indeed!! Hanging those and drilling them were a challenge with one arm, especially when rolling around on the garage floor trying to get up and down. Took 4 hours when it only should have taken one, but had to get something done! Turned out well, but after I completed them, kind of dawned on me that when the body is finally fit and exhaust pipes are shimmed, I may be doing it over again...oh well, I feel better with them secured until paint time comes around with Mr. Kleiner. I did only secure with one bolt to the exhaust pipe, and just snugged that one up.

I have taken a few drives around the neighborhood to keep the car cranked and lubricated. The kids in the neighborhood are getting wind that it's getting close and have been asking for rides. I'm sure that the adults are right behind them. ;) I could not get the car out of 3rd gear in the neighborhood, so sneaked out on to the main road for about an 1/8 of a mile from entrance to entrance but wasn't able to get to 5th gear. One was a real pucker run..can't wait until I get this thing registered!

One thing I haven't been able to do is my hood. Finally started on that, but realized that I needed to get Mike Everson's radiator aluminum panel in first. I had this powdercoated black some time ago, so fitted it today. I had to trim about 1/2" off the radiator side and another 1/8" on the front side of it to fit properly. It looks awesome and I highly recommend it as a finishing piece for the front end. Kind of hard to see in the picture with the glare on the gloss black powder coat. Hopefully won't be a rock reflector but that's what repaints are for.

Hood hinges are on the car and will get that on this week for final fitting. Good to be back!

So I'm 18 weeks post op and pretty much back in the garage with only strength as a restriction. As soon as the gyms open back up around here I can get some serious progress going. I have accomplished a few things.

First off, I finally got my windshield back together. After powdercoat, it seemed like the frame was warped or something from the heat and one side was misaligned. In fact, I snapped one of those copper L brackets and had to order another one from FFR. Those have just become available by the way.

So, I bought an Optic Armor piece of polycarbonate and thought if I could control the size a bit when I trimmed it out, that the frame would have an easier time. This was not the case, as I was still having the same issue. So, long story short, thought that maybe the glass, because of its rigidity, could pull the frame back together easier than the pliable Optic Armor and what do you know, when right back together. So I'm saving the Optic Armor in case I need it down the road and have set the windshield aside with the Whitby SS windshield brackets, and should install in the next week or two.

I started on my hood latches and fitment. Followed Edwardb's lead and channeled the holes for the latches, used the low profile 10-32 weld nuts (Mcmaster Carr 98001A125) and used the HSRF to bond it all together. I used an airsaw to channel the holes and found out that masking tape works well when you are cutting to keep the jaggies away from the fiberglass. I read that if you are going to do this, the latches must be oriented horizontally and not vertically. Caught that after the first drilling, so those extra holes will have to be filled. Came out OK and the bond is solid.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_1635.jpg?width=590&height=370&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/a2134ff0-d040-4118-b5dd-b327ec50dcef)

I also used 10-32 SS screws to match up with the weld nuts, but had to enlarge the holes in the latches so that they fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_1634.jpg?width=590&height=370&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/2c8e7c24-54dc-41e9-a86b-46ec1db1c2f3)

One thing I forgot to mention was the powdercoating of the latches. I initially thought that there might be some plastic in there that would melt with the heat, but after reading about Mark Eaton's experience, I took them back to the powdercoater and sure enough, everything looked great and was functional.

Last part on the latches were the underside. I did buy a couple of the flange bearings that some have finished off the bottom with (Mcmaster Carr #7815K23), securing with HSRF. I decided to go another route, as with those embedded in their permanently against the hood, I wasn't sure how it would fare with paint, so I used a high temp silicone rubber gasket instead (Mcmaster Carr #1061T17). This can be removed and finishes off the hole nicely. I also drilled the latch stud for a cotter pin and put a little blue loctite on the holding screw.

I think I took the hood off and on about 8 times before being happy with the fitment. It's not completely flush but fits the hole, and has plenty of meat in the gap department, so I'm sure it will be enough until Mr. Kleiner gets a hold of it. I think when it was all said and done, I took even amounts off of both sides, maybe 3/16", and another 1/8" off the front. I will say that from FFR, the bottom right corner gapping (when facing the car from the front), seemed to be a little larger than the rest of the corners, so I tried to blend that in with the rest of the trimming without taking any additional off from that area.

Brackets and gas struts all went in fairly easily. Loosely tightened all, put the hood down, then tightened up from the bottom. The entire system is solid and functions nicely. The only caveat that I have is that my hood lightly kisses the air cleaner. Just barely sits down on it. I'm sure the cut hole in the hood for the air scoop will remedy that, but that's a job for Jeff, as he's seen what I can do with the louver holes...:)

Only thing left to report is that I finally bed lined my splash panels. I used the Herculiner aerosol which actually came out really nice. Usually the spray nozzle on these cans is garbage, but it held up and gave a nice uniform finish with even aggregate. I'll put some rubber gaskets on these and install them next weekend.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_1696.jpg?width=590&height=370&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/1561ed26-68c3-4b21-93db-e56a2e1a9513)

I figure once I get the windshield on and the doors/trunk fitted a little better, I'll have the bulk completed for paint. I have a total of 42 miles on my odometer, and the engine seems to run just a little better every time I get into the car. Very pleased with the Blueprint 427 so far....Just need to get it out and really run it.

Looking fantastic. You are really coming along fast. Love the blacked out trim. I sprayed my elephant ears with rattle can bed liner. I had a bunch left over from doing the engine bay panels. I think that your Herculiner will hold up better since it has that "rubbery" feel and will be more resilient rather than brittle when hit by rocks.

So, on to the installation. Happy to say that nothing got nicked, banged or scratched. It was seamless in that regard. I had the towels there but really didn't need them. Took it nice and slow and my assistant did a great job.

Hey Colin. Those are Nitto NT555 G2's. They have the tire stickers on them. I have the supplier listed in my thread somewhere. If you place them on the tire in the correct spots, they almost look legit!

Hi Chad, I'm a week or two away from pulling the trigger on an mk4 kit. I'm in Dr Phillips so in your neck of the woods. I'm also leaning toward a carbed blueprint 427. I just figured I'd ask if you would spec your kit the same way if you were to do it again now that you've made so much progress. Have you kept track of how many hours you've invested so far? Are there any other guys building in the area you know of? Sorry for the thousand questions :)

Now it wasn't all roses. I did have a little trouble getting the notches on both sides to seat. Probably sat the engine up and down off the mounts a half a dozen times, making little adjustments here and there. The focus was with the leveler. It really needed to be perfectly centered in the bay in order for it to seat 99% of the way. The passenger side always had no problem going in, but the driver's side kept hanging about 1/16" off. So, called my Bud Carl (Badasp), and gave me the idea to loosen the motor mount on that side. I did that, then took a 2x4 and tapped the mount into the place, then tightened the mounts back up (45 ft-lbs). Problem solved! Bolts from mount to frame tightened to 50 ft-lbs.

Hello Chad, really enjoying your build thread! This was a big milestone day for you. Very cool your son was part of it! Looking forward to catching up with the rest of your thread, as I've made a note of many of your good tips/lessons learned. I'm sure I'll have several more by the time I'm caught up.

P.S. Semper Fi! I saw your Marine Corps flag in a couple different pictures--have the same hanging in my garage.

Hey Chad,

Really digging your build. My plan is very similar to what your doing (in terms of using a lot of black and keeping things modern). It's cool as hell looking. I'm curious if you plan on using the Quick Jack Cover Plates, I really want to see what they look like, particularly powder coated. I am also would love to know how your music sounds while driving. Wondering how it holds up over the exhaust. So many great features.

Also let me be the next Jar Head to pass along a Semper Fi. Thinking of sneaking an EGA in mine somewhere.

Thanks for the comments Jesse. I'm not planning on using the cover plates. I really like the raw look of the quick jacks. I'm trying to balance in-between modern and old style as much as I can, but giving a nod towards modern. Powder coating everything is a bit tedious and expensive, but worth the look IMO. The most challenging parts are the rear and front tail light bezels for different reasons. The way I have my music setup, sounds killer when the car is sitting. Driving down the road not so much. It's BT, so I'll probably have to wear an earpiece at highway speeds. That said, I'm not completely sure as I haven't had it out of the neighborhood yet. It's getting ready for paint now and just registered it a couple of weeks ago.

PM me if you have any other questions about the PC. Semper Fi to you as well. Can't go wrong with an EGA as the steering wheel emblem.....

So it's been a while since I updated my build thread. I had to get a few pieces powder coated and ceramic coated and just kind of slowed the process down as I await paint. The pipes and windshield frame brackets were the last two pieces that I had to get blacked out. Again, the entire process is completely worth it, but it is very time consuming and expensive. There is only one ceramic coater around here who did an excellent job on my headers so took the pipes back and they turned out great. Really threw the BBQ paint thing back and forth, as this was not cheap, but went for the durability.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_2082(1).jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/2d1a7242-df31-4416-891b-e73c11efd55c)

I also had to have the rollbar re-powder coated because of the scratches it got taking it in and out for fitment. Should have wrapped in tape, but got in a hurry and forgot. Gas cap also had to be redone as I got some overspray on it from another project. Denatured alcohol does a great job at cleaning, just go easy with the elbow grease. Anyhow, got those back. Reinstalled the gas cap but kept the rollbar off at this point, as I won't be doing much driving.

The windshield brackets were next and had them powdercoated. I am really glad that I bought the SS inserts from Whitbys for the windshield. As many times as I had those brackets off and on for screw fitment and powdercoating, I would have surely stripped out the included brass inserts. Crazy how different the car looks with a windshield.

Per the advice from the forum, I tapped and drilled my brackets. Very easy to do with the soft brass. I took Mike Everson's advice and drew a line straight down the middle of each windshield frame bracket with a florescent marker, so that I'd know when it was aligned in the middle of the brackets on the car to be marked.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_1895.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/a69ffc3a-7994-4b64-8b48-60ed199631de)

Tapped and drilled:

I took the same support that I had made for the body when it was in the body buck, cut it down an inch or so and used it to hold the windshield up so that I could mark it. It's a must do when you are a one man show and worked perfectly. I had 27 1/8" of an inch on each side from door jam to the top screw on the windshield. Sat in it to make sure my head wasn't over the top of the windshield, but nope, fit perfectly.

Also made sure that the windshield brackets were not touching the body. Test fit the screws and made sure the rubber laid down across the car with no daylight. All looked good. The picture doesn't show the powder coated brackets, as that was my initial fitment, but they do look great.

One thing I did run into by accident was the rev limiter. This was autoset by Blueprint at I'm going to guess around 5000-5500, so I never really messed with it. Out on a drive around the neighborhood one day to add to my whopping 50 miles on the engine, and the car would not rev above 2500. Somehow the wire had come out of its fastener in the engine bay and grounded itself while the car was running to 2500 RPM. Carl (BadASP) pointed this out and I reset it to the correct rpm. Thought I'd mention it as it wasn't my first guess when diagnosing and someone else may benefit.

Mike from Spotlight Customs provided another update today. He only works on one car at a time so progress is coming along! Doors, hood and trunk gapping is completed and body has come off for the final time. The chassis is now wrapped in a bag and placed on the lift for safe keeping until body and paint are completed.

Hood has been cut with holes drilled for button head screws and scoop. As Mike says, the doors and jams needed a little work which was expected.

Good to know there is another painter in the SE now that I am in FL. Just have to build me a garage at the new place and then my order goes in. Funny thing when I first opened this thread I saw the latest pic and for a brief moment I thought, “yikes! He is going with pink!” Then I took another look and went whew. :D

Can’t wait to see her done. You’re going red with all black trim right?

Wife would have loved Pink, but that's a non starter...:D Plan is still to go Red with an all blacked out car. Carmine Red is the leader right now, but still have some time to make adjustments in color selection. Not much, but a little, so I've got to get decided. My mother lives on Amelia Island towards the Fernandina Beach side. They have a great car show there once per year that I might look into next year.

We've got color! Man does the Carmine Red pop! Black will be Ford Ebony 9700, which is a nice deep inky black for the stripes. No pinstripes, just basic stripes running down the hood, trunk and front quarters over the louver holes. It's going to be sweet!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday! We did very little but I did manage to get to the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona Beach for a few hours. Really nice cars there. Saw only 2 Cobras out of the entire show. One was an FFR and the other a Backdraft. Both looked great, but was surprised to only see 2. Not a bad thing to be unique!!

Anyhow, Mike was busy getting the car closer to completion and sent some pics. Here we are in the final priming phase and initial color, which is a Porsche color, Carmine Red.

Fitting for the stripes. Typical cobra twin stripe down the middle with fender stripes as well (Backdraft design inspired). Not for everyone, but just couldn't resist.

The paint looks sweet, cv2065! I really dig the color choices and more importantly, those side stripes! I'm planning the same, not color, but I do want to add some smaller side stripes accents. I know they're not for everyone, but for me, they just add another perspective for those viewing the car from side. Keep at it, you're in the final turn heading for that graduation **********.

Thanks guys. Looking forward to seeing it in person. For those that are looking to do the stripes, if you are looking at the Backdraft car as inspiration like I did, one thing I realized is that the louver cutout on those cars is higher and closer to the front wheel well than the FFR body. So when you align the stripes with the louver cutout, they emerge a couple of inches further back against the hood of the car than the Backdraft version.

So lets tack on some more...

I made a day trip down to Spotlight in Dahlonega, GA as I'm up next after Chad (CV2065). Have to say what a view this guy has. I know... keep it to the car but man this guys shop is overlooking the frontage of the Appalachian range.

Paint looks great! Especially the fender stripes. I'm sure that was a task given the "0" symmetry in these bodies. Just contributing with some shots I took today. I'll update on my thread as I'm trailering down next week. Not sure whats going on with this red movement but I'm going BLUE!!!! Enough!!!

That’s showing up much more orange in these photos than real life...I’ve spent a lot of time with this color the past week or so ;) I think he put it over a lighter ground coat than I did but that would affect coverage more than color.

As I told Carl I’m not usually a red guy but I really like this one and the black is a great contrast!

I agree Jeff. The pictures do show it a bit more orange than in real life. Thanks for the kudos! Carl and I are going to get a dual picture when we get the cars together here shortly, which will be really nice!

Wow...What a long but fantastic day! I met Carl (Badasp) up at Spotlight Customs in GA yesterday to pick up my car after just being painted in his enclosed trailer. Carl had just picked up his car from the painters and was coming down to drop it off to Mike at Spotlight for a cut and buff on his new paint job, so worked out perfectly, as Carl and I were able to get the cars together for the first time.

They say pictures don't do these cars justice, and this was no different. Carl and I just couldn't capture the pure awesomeness with these two cars in photos alone. You REALLY have to be standing next to them.

Mike from Spotlight did a fantastic job with my car. It was one of those moments were you ask yourself is that is really your car? Anyway, here's a couple of pictures from the pickup. Mike uses a high build PPG clear (very expensive) to where you can't tell the stripes from the paint job and the cut and buff is like a mirror on the black stripes. Truly great paint work!

And now for the money shot of both cars in Carmine Red. Photos can be deceiving because of how this color dances differently in different light angles, but both are identical in color. The color of the striping and black vs. chrome can also deceptively change the color as well. The middle picture from up top gives a good color comparison.

Now off for the finishing touches. Luckily I have the next two weeks off to tinker and get some road time. I did notice that my radio and parking lights were not working when it got back. Pulled the 15 amp fuse and it had blown somehow? I'll grab another. Also, my rev limiter had somehow grounded out to 1K RPM and had to reset it. Not sure if those had anything to do with the car not having battery power for some time. Either way, it goes back on jackstands for a few things:

Splash guard install, wheel spinners, license plate bracket, badging, wipers, side mirrors, wind wings/visors, door panels, sidepipe heat shields, door sills and carpet, front mesh and check out a possible minor leak at the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder....All in a day's work!

Been very busy getting some odds and ends completed so that I can graduate! First thing was to get the car up on jackstands so I could clean up underneath. Red dust everywhere so it took me a good few hours to get it back to 'new' condition. My mother in law was visiting and came outside to look at the car. She says, I don't get it. You waited weeks to get it painted and now you take the wheels off again? What's your deal? LOL...Maybe she has a point.

Anyhow, I installed the splash shields. The rears fit in perfectly, but the fronts needed about 1/4" trim around the sides to fit. I drilled and tapped 1/4-20 holes with SS button heads for a clean install. All looks good. Calipers are now black instead of red. I thought they were red until the car is painted Carmine Red. Then the calipers really stood out and looked like orange. Couldn't have that so they were repainted.

Looking at Paul's (Edwardb) build thread, thought I'd also fabricate a filler panel for the areas right behind the seats and in front of the rear wheel wells. Not sure why FFR doesn't include an additional piece of aluminum here, as it looks very prone to spin all kinds of debris into that gap. Riveted them in and all good.

My trunk struts that I had were 17" long and 40lbs. Not sure about anyone around here, but I could not compress the 40 pounders by hand. Even attached, I couldn't get them to budge, so I ordered another set. Carl (Badasp) said that the FFR ones were 20" long and 20lbs. They don't open the trunk by themselves but they do easily hold it open. That's all that I needed so ordered the C16-08568 from Amazon. Installed and they worked as advertised.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_4697.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/feebc2aa-2355-4726-ace3-bc1120b6719b)

Also got my door straps installed. I dyed them black long ago. Again, tapped all of my holes for 10-32 button heads. Came out great but snapped one of my tapping bits. Just an odd angle so easy to do. The instructions call to side mount on the 2" tube, which I did, but you could probably get another couple of inches door clearance by mounting on the face of the tube. All good.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_4694.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/97a55dda-8384-44e3-a385-de06278f9b2e)

Heat shields went on the side pipes next. These came from CobraStuff and were very easy to put on. I sourced some black washers from Lowes and took about 25 minutes to do both sides. I think they look great with the blacked out look! And of course, in the upper right hand corner you have the 427 badging. Used 3M Heavy Duty Red tape from Autozone. Works great as I've used it before on my Jeep. I don't think I'll have any emblems on the hood or trunk, just the steering wheel.

Speaking of sidepipes, the passenger side pipe was about 1/4" too far outboard, so had to get some spacers from Breeze. Mark is great with his recommendations. Bought a 1/2" wedge as well as 1 1/2" wedge. Put them together and it nets out 1/4". Exactly what I needed and worked great.

Went out today to stretch her legs. First time out of the neighborhood and went about 40 miles. Stayed cool as a cucumber and was even asked what I do for a living at a gas station. LOL...If people only knew....Anyhow. A few observations:

1. Steering is a little 'sticky' meaning just a nudge moves it more than I'm used to in a 'modern' car. Not a lot, just different. Then again, I've always had manual steering in my classics, so point of reference is zero.
2. Lots of heat coming up through the channel under the door from the engine compartment. I'll be getting some expanding window foam for that gap as it may have gotten left off. Who needs heated seats??
3. Tires make a brief high pitched sound going fast around curves on the back roads. This is either because its a new road or I need an alignment. I'm going with door #2. That happens on Tuesday. :D
4. Thought I smelled something burning on the first part of the drive. I think it was my new ceramic coated heat shields heating up. Stopped the car to look around and nothing, then it went away. So I'll go with that.
5. Asked if this was a Porsche and if the 19 year old asking became an Engineer, can he get one too? I said of course.

It was a good day!

This past Tuesday I was able to get my alignment. Funny thing is that I called around to some of the more recommended garages and they were booked. I had 100 miles on my car and didn't want to screw the tires up so I looked for alternatives and found a guy named Rafael Galvez that does mobile car alignments. I've never seen that service before, but Rafael comes out to your garage and does the alignment via laser equipment that BT's up to his laptop software. Overall I was VERY impressed and the results are excellent. All of the issues I mentioned above are gone and drives straight as an arrow. Company is called 'Cars Mobile Alignments'...top notch!

Also was able to get to some of the small things on my final bucket list. One was the sun visors. I used Jeff Kleiner's mod where instead of screwing the visor brackets into the windshield and risking cracking the glass, I used a 6mm SS square nut from McMasters that fit perfectly in the top channel, cut down 8-6MM SS screws and installed. Because my windshield is powder coated black, I also used some rubber spacers to keep the bracket from rubbing the metal.

I also installed the wind wings with side mirrors from The Dream Car Company. Terry is fantastic to work with and he even powder coated the mirrors for me before he sent them. Terry also sends black and SS hardware, depending on preference. Everything was very solid as a final product. One thing I will mention that for the wind wing set screws, the FFR instructions say to use a 3/32" hex to tighten down. This was not the correct size and the allen wrench started to spin as I tightened down further. Swapped over to a little larger 2.5mm hex and it was perfect.

Coming to the end of it. I am waiting on front air vent and oil cooler mesh from Finish Line. Also need to put in my finishing metal and carpet at the door sills, get my wipers installed as well as the rear view mirror. It had an 'accident' during paint. Very close to graduation!

You will be putting miles on your car faster than expected. You will probably make excuses just to take the car out. It is a wonderful feeling. I'm about to turn 5000 miles in 6 months of being legal. Your car looks great!

I have manual brakes, so for what its worth. They stop well enough. Not on a dime like my old brake booster in my 67 Camaro, but good enough. LOTS of brake dust from those pads. I'm considering changing to Hawk sometime down the road.

I also have manual brakes... I did upgrade with Power Stop drilled and slotted rotors front and rear with upgraded pads. It will be interesting to see how they perform once I get the car on the road.

Agree The cam BP uses in these 427s has a bunch of lope. Sounds great at idle.

I got AL mesh for the brake duct holes, oil cooler as well as the radiator opening. Took them in and had them anodized black....might be an option for your black-out theme?

Put about 200 miles on the car over the MLK weekend. Everything went really well. Car ran great. Even got some highway miles which I now prefer over the back roads. I did make a carburetor mod where I upgraded the accelerator pump discharge nozzles. Carb came with a 31 size. Upgraded to a 35. Still chasing a very slight bog, so might go after a jet size increase in the near future. Plugs look nice and tan so I'm right on the edge of a close to perfect tune.

My Herb's Panels are in the doors now. I really wanted to just use velcro, but with the summer heat, didn't want to take a chance on them sliding in the future. Herb recommends using silicone in addition to the velcro. I'm sure that works great, just wanted to be able to remove if necessary, so I used 10-32 screws instead. Taped up the area to avoid flaking any new paint. All came out great and I used the plastic head caps from Lowes to finish it all off. I'm very pleased.

Also started with my door filler panels. These just fit right into place and are easy to work with. I'll probably have the carpet pieces bound on the ends to finish them, so it will be a week before I get the carpet mounted.

I'm not sure what kind of power steering pump you're using but my Saginaw runs at 1200 PSI. This creates a twitchiness in the rack. I installed a reducer that brings the pressure down to 800 PSI. This smooths the steering considerably. I have not built my Cobra yet but have had this issue on other cars.

FYI

Well, I've got almost 400 miles on the car now. I keep telling myself that I need to finish up some of the final touches on the car, but find myself behind the driver's seat instead. As you all know, the reactions you get driving around are priceless. Almost time for my first oil change!

I will say that after changing the squirters on the carb to two sizes up, the car starts incredibly well. I just give it two blips of the throttle and I can say that it's scared me a couple of times. LOL...thing just roars to life.

Anyhow, got a couple other minor things done. Bought the weather seal for the doors and hood from Breeze. 24 feet worth of part #21086. Went on the doors very easily. I haven't put on the hood yet. The hood was fitted with the rubber grommets that came from FFR. Wondering if this weather sealing will be a little too giving for the hood versus the grommets. Guess I'll try it out. Here's the door fitting.

After my fiasco with ********** and not getting my parts, I decided to use the hood emblem for my steering wheel emblem. Actually came out really good and matches the floor mats.

As I'm finishing up, I kept going back to my sound system. I know I know...the sound of the exhaust should be enough. But its NOT! So....I was looking at my pancake subwoofer that I installed and it's been screaming for mercy against the pipes. I can hear my highs and some mids, but bass has just been lacking. So, I said WTF, and upgraded my system again. This time, it's dedicated 10" Kicker Sub box and 300 watt RMS amp. And guess what....It's badass!! My entire car is now a subwoofer, and I'm digging it!! Who needs trunk space anyway???

And for those of you who are looking for a classy but somewhat old school thump but curios as to what fits, here's what I've got. Not expensive, but does the job. The box must weigh in at 25-30 pounds and is very stout. Kicker model is 44TCC104. It's a vented, thin profile slanted box, so is 7" at the top and 4" at the bottom...Just enough room to close the trunk and not touch the lid. I also added the Rockville RVA-M2 Monoblock Amplifier. Now I'm happy!

Oh and if I ever did want to recover my trunk space for a trip or something, it's a quick two wire disconnect to the sub.

Well, finally at my 500 mile mark and put the car up for a quick looksie. Everything looks great...no leaks (Knock on wood). I also changed my oil using 10W30 Conventional as prescribed by Blueprint. Plug was a little sludgy, but that was to be expected. Magnet on this plug could pull a truck. Nothing in the pan but dirty oil, so all is good so far. Here's what the plug looked like....

https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/c310/cv2065/IMG_4997.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds (https://app.photobucket.com/u/cv2065/p/aec5aa32-354d-4a9c-931e-3f71062fb200)

Also got around to getting my brake hole mesh siliconed in. The 'eyebrow' metal supports in the front get in the way when trying to install these, so lots trimming of the mesh on one side is most certainly needed. Came out well though.

Hey Chris,

Your car is looking spectacular, really enjoyed watching it come together. Now that I'm in my build I'm really getting a great idea of what I ultimately want my car to look like. I have locally been to every powder coat shop and I simply can't find anyone that either will do the window frame or their attitude is "well, we can give it a shot". I think what makes more sense for me is to ship the frame to a shop that has proven they know what they are doing. Would you be willing to share the name of the shop you used? Your frame looks perfect so I think its worth the $50 it would cost to ship it.

Sorry to spam your thread. I was going to PM this but your inbox is full.

Can't believe that it's been over a year and a half since I last posted. Time flies! Glad to see all of the new builds and new FFR enthusiasts! I don't think I ever had an official graduation as I had a few things to clean up like the trunk plate lighting, trunk gasket, etc. You know, the little things that you keep saying you'll get to, but you'd rather be driving your new car! So happy late graduation to me. :)

I did want to give a quick recap on my experiences so far. The car now has over 4,000 miles and things have been going really well. A couple of thoughts:

Blueprint Engines are the BOMB! My 427 has performed flawlessly (knock on wood). No leaks or issues of any kind. I did have to tighten some pulley fasteners, but that's it. Cam lope is incredible and really defines the car. Talk about making an entrance at every car show! My wife's first show she slumped into the floor board as she couldn't take the eyeballs and attention. And she considers herself an extrovert. Pretty funny. With Quickfuel carb, car starts like it was fuel injected. Can't recommend BP enough!
2,000 mile oil change was perfect. Plug and Pan was clean. I may switch to synthetic at 5,000 miles. Not sure yet.
Stock brake pads put out a lot of brake dust. I'm considering changing to Hawk soon.
I'm investing in the 3M Protective film for the front end, hood and front fenders. I have a couple of chips, nothing crazy, but don't want anymore, so going to be proactive to keep the paint nice. Looking at about $2500 for that service with a 10 year, 8mm film. If you are thinking about it right out of paint...just do it.
Dream Car round mirrors are expensive, but the functionality is fantastic. Can't imagine using anything that is drilled into the car and they look amazing.
One mechanical issue that I did have was the clutch pedal going limp one day while out on the highway. The C-clip inside the assembly had fallen out. I slip shifted home and it was a 20 minute fix. Advantages of 'Built not Bought'!
Car stereo speakers have some random popping that is somewhere between the amp and head unit. I need to chase down the loose ground when I get a chance. I took good pictures of the wiring up under the dash during the build, as it's hard to see what's going on without taking the dash off. That said, you can hear highs and mids in these cars easily, just not bass at high speed unless you have a really powerful system. Just invest in some nice 6.5" rounds and a good amp.
Driver's side door lock came loose. Jeff Kleiner recommended longer screws and bigger size when the spacer plate is used, and he was right. Upgraded and all is good.
I also upgraded my Lucas 7" headlights to a black tinted LED. Lighting is about 10x better and it was plug and play. Matter of fact, it was the exact same LED round light that I used on my wife's Jeep a few months ago. Really changes the look of the front end and better suits the blacked out theme.

I have won a few local car show trophies and enjoyed the holiday parades. Always some camera, video or neck breaking going on as the Cobra passes. Really an amazing vehicle. Full transparency, I did get the 'itch' to build something else like an SLC Superlite or the new FFR F9, IF they release it. The brutal Florida heat and rainy season confines the Cobra experience to mornings or evenings in the Summer and Fall, so started thinking about an enclosed cockpit with AC. I listed the Cobra for sale recently (NO!!!) and even had a prospective buyer but couldn't bring myself to do it and pulled it back after a couple of weeks. Instead, I'm investing a little more money into my ride (protective film, speakers, engine bay upgrades and maybe some custom upholstery) and enjoying the Cobra for a few more years. Cooler months with little rain are on the horizon and the cruising is going to be good!!

Again, good to see the FFR community thriving. I'll post some updated photos. Thanks!
