Engine mounts

Anybody go with solid mounts? I welded up some mounts on my old dodge 2.5 turbo because I kept smashing the inserts (5 of them, with various methods of stiffening). Didn't much mind any vibrations, but it was an OEM car about 2600 lbs and proper carpet, etc. I did remove the balance shafts on that engine, so it was a little more "vibrationy" to begin with.

Rubber on one of my donor mounts is cracked at the metal, and I can wiggle it a little with my hands. I'm inclined to weld them up and give it a go, since that will cost me $5 to try it out vs anywhere from $100 to $250 for new mounts.

Also, has anyone changed motor mounts on an 818 with the engine in? I know, not too many of them (if any) with enough miles/action to wear out mounts, except some of the guys that are pulling the engine anyway. I'll accept speculation here from guys with complete cars who can take a guess.

I changed motor mounts without removing the motor. pretty easy.

Thanks. Unless anyone has good reasons not to, I guess I'll just get some flat, box them in, and go with it. See how I like it before I get "real" pieces.

You just need to jack the motor up like an inch or two to change the mounts out.

You can certainly go with solid mounts, but the better aftermarket ones (like the Cusco style) don't allow the motor to move hardly at all (maybe like 1/8" or so) and they do a far better job at limiting vibration than solid mounts would.

IAG makes mounts with 3 different inserts - can always change them up if you don't like the ones you have. Nominal cost.

I would not do solid mounts, the vibrations will loosen bolts you never thought possible to loosen! there are a ton of aftermarket mounts with different durometer ratings, highest is stiffest, and yes, pretty easy to change in the car if you can jack the engine 2"

Geez, we spent about 7 hours at Barrett-Jackson together today and never talked about mounts. Sure, easy to change with engine in. I changed to stiffer mounts, I think called Group N? And, the tranny mount, too.
