Well, my day has finally come and gone. I ordered a MKIV base kit during the May 50/50 sale, but had to schedule an August build date due to a potential housing move. After pushing it back again to Oct 15th after TWO moves, Gerry from Stewart showed up this morning at 9am.

61143

I was car 8 of 9 on the trailer, #7 was an MKIV to Racine, WI, and #9 was a coupe going to Rockford, IL.

61141

Everything went as expected, I had my chassis dolly built and ready along with warehouse racking in my garage. Gerry was great and we were done in about an hour which included some chatting. It was a tight fit but I was able to get my early Christmas present under the tree!

61144

I was able to unbox and complete 95% of the detailed inventory. I've got a completely bizarre and eclectic back-order list, but luckily nothing that will stop me. In fact I think I really lucked out since my BO list includes stuff I won't even use like parking brake cables(going line-lock), throttle cable(drive by wire), and a few other odds and ends. Here's everything repacked in clear totes and more convenient boxes and the car in it's new home.

61142

Plans for the car will be 60-70% street car and 30-40% track car. I live relatively close to Road America, Autobahn CC, and Gingerman, so the car will definitely see lots of laps. I'll be starting a build thread since I'll be trying to do some unique things and hope to make some of my own parts. I'm teaching myself CNC machining, so this will be a good project to work on. I've got an engine choice planned for the car that might make a die-hard traditionalist cringe, but otherwise nothing out of this world. Basics look like this:

'15 IRS(3.55 gearing)
Powder Coated Chassis
Driver and Pass Chrome Rollbars
Stainless Pipes
15" Street Tires
18" Track Tires
Levy Wilwood's for 15" wheels
T56Magnum(or Magnum XL)

I'll definitely be busy this winter, but that's a good thing here in WI, it'll make spring come VERY fast I'm sure.

Christmas in November! Lot's of fun ahead of you now.

Looks like you have a nice area to be able to work on the build. Don't expect it to stay that neat for long... drilling aluminum is a messy business..:p

TJ-

Congratulations on getting everything to its new home! It's great fun getting things going, and should provide you with lots to do over the winter.

Best of luck, and feel free to ask lots of questions. I look forward to following your build thread!

Steve

TJ - Congratulations, I remember opening day well. Sounds like you have an interesting plan and I hope to see it around in the future. I'm just south of the border in FIB land and always happy to offer my finished car as a reference in the event you need to look at one. My brother lives up near Lake Geneva - just a couple miles down the road from ThickCobra - and I'm up that way often. Let me know if you ever need a hand.

I'm just starting to get to learn the area, I just moved to Burlington a couple weeks ago. Looking forward to some future meet-ups once I've got the car on the road. Not many Cobras, real, replicas, or otherwise near me in the past.

Thanks for the offer to help, I may take you up on that offer some time. To talk more than anything...

Definitely interested in meeting both of you. I may have to supply beer/pizza and have someone over to help remove the body and hang it. It's one of the things about being single after 18+ years and moving away from friends, I suddenly don't have a readily available set of spare hands.... :(

Well you do now. Two sets of hands can remove a body but three are better. PM me and let me know when you're thinking of removing the body. Saturday morning or Sunday I could swing by if that's enough notice.

Seriously? What's the weather like down there? I'm in northern WI right now(coming home tomorrow) and we just received 5-6" of snow on Tuesday night. I'm guessing it didn't do that down by home? Either that or you're WAY more die-hard than I am. I'll drive in super cold weather, being careful with warm-weather tires, but not in snow! :)

Jay and I don't have a time yet for Sunday but you're more than welcome to join us, with your car or without. I'll PM you my number instead of communicating through the forum.

I've been accused of being "not right" when it comes to driving in iffy weather. I guess I just love driving whenever I can! When it goes in the air and change the oil... done for the season! One year I picked up a Christmas tree and popped it in the open seat! Got some looks on the way home!
I'll be in touch!

Well with a Cobra, you can take your significant other or the Christmas tree, BUT not both. ;)

I just love the FFR community that makes up this(and another) forum. Just a week ago I was wondering who I'd be able to get help from to remove the body, and a great forum member came through. Thanks to Jay(ThickCobra) for stopping over to help remove the body and get it on the hanging body buck. It got a little sketchy hanging the body in my rented storage unit, all the while trying to get it close enough to the ceiling to get my Jeep under it. In the end it will work for 4-5 months while I get a bunch of the car built.
I've already got the car stripped bare and a bunch of the front suspension mocked up, guess that means it's time I start a build thread...

I am realizing that there are quite a few Cobra owners in the area, including Madison, Woodstock, Aurora and closer. Should be an interesting build for you and we may all need to somehow gather... this winter even. What I love about growing up in the midwest is always looking forward to driving season.

I'm definitely hoping to see a few other cars once I'm on the road. Always fun to see what each builder does a little different to make the perfect car for themselves.

Motivation is definitely NOT an issue. I plan to get ~2 hours a night on work days and ~10 hours on weekends. Not in a hurry to finish, just want to make sure I'm making progress and building it like I want.

My suggestion is don't wait til you are on the road. Get in touch w/ the other guys you have just discovered in this thread, get their locations, and pick a local restaurant that is a mid-point for all of you. Figure if Sat or Sun breakfast or lunch is the best and set a date.

That's a great idea! Lucky for me, cause I'm in the middle! But seriously... we should do something!

Little late but still, congrats on your early Xmas present. I'm up in Green bay and just finished mine back in September, delivered in December 2014. My plates just arrived last weekend, so when you get to the point of 3 months from completion, send in your check and photos to the DMV, it takes that long. Good luck and like the others mentioned, the forum is a great source. Just remember to toss out some photos to us so we can keep up with your progress.
