Looking great; congratulations on your first start - I had minor oil, water and even fuel leaks for the first half dozen runs that we're all quickly resolved.

Thanks Chris,

I found that i had oil spitting out of the dipstick due to a blocked PCV valve in the valve cover. Removed the restriction in the new tubing and no more oil leaks.

Wilwood Brake reservoirs installed.

I used red loctite on the bolts to the footbox. That way they wont back out with vibes.

The fitting that are on the donor brake booster are "Lead-Free Brass Hose Barb Adapter 1/4 in. x 3/8 in. MIP" from home depot. I just screwed them into the rubber grommets on the booster.

Bled the brakes using my writeup that I posted in the Roadster section. I used a shop vac and a small catch can to get the fluid to the corners of the car.

Make sure you secure and resecure all your brake fittings. They all leaked and I really had to get them tight to stop the dripping.

I HAVE POWER BRAKES BABY!

Clutch safety switch installed. Its capable of 16 amps and I used it between the starter solenoid mini starter and the key on the FFR key switch. The clutch must be depressed all the way to the floor for the car to start. Love the simplicity and ease of install.

Hey Brandon,
Just curious what your radiator is from after noticing that the cap is on the driver's side.

Jeff

Its an older model aftermarket radiator that came off the fox body that I parted out to fund my build. Its much larger capacity than the afco or ffr radiator and it was free.

Congrats  How did it drive?

All systems checked out. Wherever I set the ecu fan twmp on the fitech, the system adequately took care of the cooling range I commanded. I had a pcv block but that is now fixed. No oil leaking past seals. Power brakes are effortless.

The bad is that I need to work on the fuel film setting in the intake. It needs time to learn and configure the fitech. I need time on the computer to work on part throttle tip in.

Congratulations! Well done. You need to do donuts, outrun the cops and jump a creek, Dukes of Hazzard style if you want a thumbs up on u tube.

I think its a guy trolling my videos and I am a small channel. I notice things quickly. Just some guy being a jerk and I feel like no one wants to see you succeed. Sour people... I was also stressed because I built my own moto and trans and was worried this is where I would find something wrong.

Thanks, I am not ripping anymore. I had a lot of preparation done to this point and when I executed it, I blew through 2 years of prep in a few months. I am not at a cross roads of finish work. I have my perfect car on paper but I am out of liquid assets.

Air Cleaner install. Got this for just over 50 dollars shipped. Very heavy duty feeling for its price. I can also upgrade the filter as I have a large amount of room above the cleaner. I also have a 1 inch spacer that gave me an estimated 10+ horsepower from tuning my intake to volume for a 347. If I have not covered it in past posts, I have to say when I built my motor I made sure I did the research for a perfectly tuned intake volume to the engine displacement. The vic jr (ford performance) intake with a spacer on top give the volume for the pulse to propagate flow for the 347. The center threads that came with the intake didnt work so I went to lowes and bought a stainless steel wing nut and 8 inch rod for the threads on the fitech so that I could get the filter and air cleaner to cinch down and work for my combo. Very cheap fix and cost me like 8 bucks.

Thanks Steve, I know you have been down a heck of a road in your own life. I am trying to catch up on some smaller project and one of the big projects I took care of was taking my family to Disney World, Orlando. We bought the whole package, meal plan, park hopper, and stayed in the Art of Animation Resort. So that was a big payoff to the family for putting up with my military deployments and car addiction.

Hi Brandon,
What I would give for taking my whole family to Disney. You are lucky fella! I have the opposite problem, and missing my wife everyday.
My job offers an unlimited vacation policy, so we are traveling quite a bit, it just isn't the same anymore...:(

I can understand that, I came from a very humble beginning. Broken home, grew up in the projects (section 8 type housing) and never went on big vacations. We were content with just getting to see local sights around Pennsylvania when I was a kid. But I was happy. When I had a family, I made an effort to change all that hurt from broken family to living standard. I have worked my whole life to move forward and been blessed to be in a job in the military that pays well and pays travel and flight pay. Its all relative and to me not about the money but the memories and investment into my kids.

Trunk is finally buttoned up. There have been quite a few things I wanted to do in this build but once again I just stuck to the plan and did no major trunk mods. I can cut it up and add space later if I need to. But as usual, stay on budget, stay on track so I can drive this thing.

Here I used a unique way of trimming the hood, I flipped the intake, used it to draw my lines, flipped it again and drew the lines to form a nice pyramid trapezoid shape. I really like how the intake shines through the hood. I further used a marker taped to the paint stick to get my gap right on the hood. It turned out better than I could have hoped for.

I bought some weather tight connectors and installed them around the cars electricals. The connectors were only 24 bucks on ebay for 2 packages of 10 complete sets. Not too bad for a quality build.

Power steering rack installed. Got quite a few things planned for this and I will come back and update this post when I get more pump and lines installed.

Power steering rack installed, sold the manual rack.

Updated July 8th 2018 I used a kit from ebay that was about 150 bucks for the pulley, the bracket and the belt. All were purchased separately but from the same buyer. The belt was 57.3 gates brand done in the v coniguration. I may later do the S configuration to get more bite on the pulley but for now this is working great.

I spent the better part of a day building an extensive spreadsheet. It can be done. I am at 23900 for my build cost and I am pretty much 100 percent done minus paint. I tried to attach the over elaborate spreadsheet but she is not showing in the attachments. So this is the best I could muster. Many can be proud of the quality of the build but while using little to no donor for major parts this is probably the best you may see in price vs non-donor vehicle build cost. The donor used was a completely restored mustang so the parts were new to begin with. Gonna be hard to beat the cost of this build. I feel I am in full donor cost but did an almost full non-donor build for the money and made power to boot.

Thanks for the spreadsheet! I’m guessing guys will be printing this and showing it to their spouses for years to come.

That is impressive! You can truly document every single part.
I wanted to build my engine, but the amount of work that goes into this was just scary. Plus, I have no tools. Plus, my boys would hide some lego bricks inside of it

I was tracking my build for a month or two, all the receipts and add on parts. But eventually I got tired of it and chucked it.
I can't even remember the countless trips to a local hardware/car parts store :)

Steve, thank you. I could not have done it without the help of some great people at FFR, Bob Lloyds Dyno, and many that gave me parts when I asked for them. I was willing to pay but people sent me hundreds of dollars of stuff free. They made my dream come true on a budget. I just had to do the work. My donor isn't shown here but I parted out a pristine Foxboro and made about 6000 back in aftermarket parts. On top of that the bank refunded me 7000 on credit card fraud that I hadn't seen in 10 years. I have just been blessed time and time again. The other part of this and it has to do with faith.... My wife and k have donated thousands to charities. I believe good things come around to those who have a giving heart. I still want to go back and redo a few things in time but my next phase will be body and paint next year. I am getting ready to go back to Afghanistan soon.

Lol, love the bricks comment, the engine build is not for the faint of heart. I worked up to the engine build and have built other turbo engines in the past. This was easier than building up a turbo car as it has less moving parts. Thank you for the kind words.

That's a great idea! Cutting/pasting/saving for future use right now. I think the build for a coupe is close enough that she won't notice...

Kudos for sticking to the plan. Outstanding discipline. Like many, I have trouble saying "no" to mission creep. All the best to you on your deployment.

Dash work coming along now. I use a radius from the steering wheel to bring the gauges some much needed attention compared to what ffr does.

Not sure mark. I hated the stock layout and it interferes with my turn signal. I called up ffr and bought a blank. The idea behind the gauges is that i could not see what I wanted to see concerning situational awareness. I also plan to surface mount my fitech control screen just above the steering wheel. It gives me air fuel ratio, timing info, and many more engine parameters. The radius idea was to make the driver feel more in the center of information during driving. I thought several radii based off the steering would give me that focus point.

Finally got around to installing a fuel pressure gauge. The fittings are 6 an with an 1/8 npt fitting. The gauge was 25 bucks and the fitting was 12. I like the look and accessibility of the gauge. I chose this one because the oil filled gauges tend to be less accurate and flop around like a fish. The heat soak in the liquid gauges is a concern as well. I chose the proven fuelab products that i have trusted in my builds for years.

Installed a 3rd LED Brake light.

When I started my 3rd brake light mod, I had orgiinally purchased a billet motorcycle brake light from a place in Florida. It was really nice but it stuck out like a sore thumb and I removed it. I had already drilled a hole in my rollbar and thought maybe I will just put some LED's in there. But I found this single chrome LED from a great website called superbrightleds.com

The bolt beam 12mm LED provides 55 Lumens of eye piercing red stopping light. https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-wired-bolts/bolt-beam-12mm-led-light/1494/

I jumped the rear brake lights from the circuits running to my turn signal stalk. I kept some service loops and made it all neat in the beginning stages of my build.

Lastly here is the rest of the install.

In order for the two circuits to run the one light, I would have to solder and heat shrink in some diodes to keep the power from crossing over to the other set of lights. If these diodes are not used the lights will all turn on when the brakes are depressed. This way they act as a power gate only allowing electricity to flow to the LED and not back into the rest of the circuits. I was going to make a PCB but it wouldn't fit in the roll-bar. I decided to use a few layers of heat shrink.

Sadly I havent done a whole lot in the past month or so. I have installed the amp and a lot of electrical, installed the rest of the carpet and installed an 8 speaker sound system without subwoofer. There is no need when the trunk acts as an enclosure. There is still much to be done but here are a few shots of the 6 relays, the amp, and much of the custom wiring. The cost benefit analysis here is that if I am not cruising I still have tunes for the shows, cars and coffee, etc. I also added some neat footwell lighting with chrome covers. They are mounted straight through the main dash support /chassis support tube. They are clean and wire loomed like the rest of the car.

REDUNDANT LIMP MODE
I built redundant power into the car so that if the subsystem powering all interior systems shorts out or fails, the car can be started by the fuse panel under the hood in limp mode. So the fuse under the hood powers efi and starter relays only. Fail safe just in case. Also added some bracing and finished wiring all other systems.

My favorite part of all this is the guys that comment on facebook and see all the smaller inputs I do to the car on a daily basis. David Hammer said, "I’ve been watching your build with admiration (this guys got his sh*t together). You just took it to a whole new level." Thanks man. I am glad I can do something that inspires or helps someone along the way. That is how we all grow.

Does anyone know what the powersteering camber caster should be?

Front end alignment for power steering setups is typically +8 degrees caster, -0.5 degrees camber, approx 1/16 total toe in.

I’ve got a 98 power steering rack and 95 spindles. I had to shorten the rear UCA arms to get about 6.5 degree caster. Could not get anymore.

Does anyone know what the powersteering camber caster should be?

For a primarily street driven car you want approximately 8 degrees of positive caster, .5 to .75 degree negative camber and 3/32" total toe in. Track and autocross go to 1 to 1.5 degrees negative camber and bring toe more to zero (you'll get better bite at initial turn in but the car can become darty). You will likely find that the rear adjuster sleeve will bottom out when trying to achieve the higher positive caster setting which will require cutting back the sleeve about 1/4" along with taking a similar amount from the male stubs so that they don't bottom internally.

The male portion that threads into the sleeve. If they are left as is they'll bottom out inside the sleeve.

Here's what I did. Cut the sleeves and removable stubs on a bandsaw, and the welded stub on the car with a saws-all. I was shooting for 1/8 inch off of each end (including the cut width), so pretty close to 1/4 inch total.

Hey Brandon question about the diodes. Are they needed here because you are feeding both the running lights AND the brake light to the 3rd brake light?

As you stated the left and right blinkers are on separate circuits. If i ran them to the same combined source, when I hit my blinker they both would turn on making my blinkers always blink both sides. By using the diodes it separates the two circuits and only allows the current to flow one direction to the third brake light. I get the blink and solid light feature only at the 3rd brake light now. Its a limitation I knew would cause the light to act on either circuit due to the blinker handle module I used by GROTE. I could have ran a separate wire to the brake pedal switch and it would have only activated the 3rd light alone but I wanted to combine the left and right so that the 3rd brake light would blink no matter what side the turn signal was on. Its a AND transistor in a sense. Look up "AND" gate transistor. THis is what its doing. Also an update to the design. I soldered in much larger diodes to take the power the brake bulbs were pulling. I used chunkier 6 amp units, the smaller ones burned out.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1935/44759489545_d500657534_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2bcf5QZ)20181101_203055 (https://flic.kr/p/2bcf5QZ) by Brandon Fertig (https://www.flickr.com/photos/158928436@N07/), on Flickr

So let me explain my signals.

LEFT Blinker = left blink and center brake light blink
RIGHT Blinker = right blink and center brake light blink
DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL = left and right bright and center light steady

Without the diodes all would blink and when brake depressed would still be steady but also short left and right sides. Hope this helps.

Bought these LED Chrome bezel lights from super bright leds .com , drilled holes through the main 2 inch tube, mounted them with the provided screws. Heat shrunk the wires in the tube and wired them into the lighting relay circuit powered by the headlight switch.

The amp install got its own dedicated source of 12 gauge wire for power and is key on and acc with the system wiring. I wired my entire car strand by strand so its not quite as clean as a harness but there is no circuit untouched and thought through. This keeps my harness diet in check and gives me a lot of options. The options here are a 4 channel high power amplifier using bluetooth as a source and powering 2 jl audio coax speakers in the rear deck and 2 in the footwell, totaling 8 speakers.

Got some new stuff in. I bought one of the last orders from FFR. I got the hinge kit for the hood with the shocks. Its a great kit and its well thought out. I got the wind wings ordered and sitting here but will install those after I get the car on the road. I bought a key ring for the FFR key set. And lastly I got the grommets from FFR. All was in stock, dont trust their website.

Wow! I just finished reading your build and there are some similarities to what I am planning. I am curious why you chose a new 347 if the donor already had a built motor? I presume that decision added quite a bit of cost to the build. I am leaning toward freshening up the built motor from my donor, but keeping it pretty low cost.

Thanks for reading up. We are all here to learn and bring something different to the table with our varying skillsets.

I chose to build a motor because I wanted 475hp vs the 300 from the built 302. I also knew I could build a motor for far less than what a shop or engine builder could do it for. I also got to be incredibly detailed on what I wanted all the way down to the cam. It was a challenge and I wanted to take it head on to prove that I was capable. It really was about my own feeling of accomplishment. It was risky but I did my homework and built a powerful engine for little money. I weighed the costs, decided on a horsepower number and went after it.

Good luck on your build.

I am about to register my car. Got insurance through Farm Bureau @ Hagerty's for 74 a month. USAA that I have been with has better policy details but it cost 90 dollars a month. I am married, 38, clean record but man they want some coin to insure it. I insured it for 50K, 200 mile range, regular driving options and excellent collision, uninsured motorist, etc. What do you all think about these prices?

Got everything printed out from the DMV, all info from the forums, and all the details laid out.

What do you all think?

I think your insurance quote cost is a bit high. I called Hagerty's and they were going to rake me over the coals in California. Did you try and call Robin at Midwest Classic Insurance? Time and time again, he knows his stuff and will most likely save you money for a better policy. He is also a vendor here.

What is the 200 mile range about? My insurance is $52K agreed upon value and 6000 miles a year. Considerably cheaper than your quote.

The 200 mile thing is where you arent planning on taking the car outside a 200 mile radius. Its not a conventional driven car, etc. I want it to be covered for daily driving however. I want to drive it as much as possible. Is your Midwest good for everyday driving? Is it good for driving across the country? I looked at their site and they are stating you must not drive the car for conventional driving in the underwriting section.

I had mine with Midwest and it was $600/yr for 50k agreed value and no restrictions. I switched to State Farm once it was registered for the same cost and coverage, since I've had insurance with them for 40+ years and have everything with them. Your mileage may vary. My brother just got Midwest on his uncompleted build last week. Give Robin a call for sure.

Sounds kind of high Brandon however I know that things can vary widely between states, even with the same carrier. You may find it worthwhile to check into State Farm. Point of reference; mine is $208 per year with all of the same high limit liability, medical, uninsured motorist coverage as all of our daily drivers and a $40K agreed value (VERY IMPORTANT---be sure that you understand the difference between "Agreed value" and "Stated value"...you'll want "agreed"). This is with no mileage or use restrictions.

Definitely TXAV8R :)

I recently got a quote from my insurance carrier (State Farm) and it was around $40.00 per month for $40,000.00 of Stated Value Coverage.
Liability was 100/300 like the rest of the Go-Dad fleet and they have my home and boats insured too.
Just understand that where I live (Near New Orleans) rates tend to be quite high.
As for the plate verbiage, well I also vote for:

TXAV8R

NOTE:..I love your wheel choice and my go down that path if I decide to get a stickier set of donuts (Nitto NT-01 Tires) for auto-crossing

...Stated Value Coverage...

Steve,
As I mentioned in my reply to Brandon be sure that you understand the difference between Stated Value and Agreed Value.

In a nutshell with agreed value both you and the insurer agree going in what the settlement would be in the event of a total loss, i.e.; agreed value of $40K would pay $40K. Some insurers will ask for an appraisal, others (like mine) simply request a set of photos.

With stated value the insurer agrees to pay up to the stated amount but reserves the right to depreciate the car or devalue it based on the actual sale prices of similar vehicles i.e.; they may deem that the actual real world market value is somewhat lower that the stated $40K and will only pay out that lesser amount. You could be holding $30,000 worth of parts reciepts and their position would be that those are now used and therefore depreciated and your labor for the build is worth exactly what you paid for it---zero dollars.

Buyer beware.

Ok TXAV8R it is, that is, if its not already taken.

So I got back from my friend at the Texas Farm Bureau and signed up for the insurance. I got unlimited miles, 50000 agreed and guaranteed value and yes for where I am in Texas I got raked over some coals. I paid 800 cash for the insurance with towing and 500 deductible. I could save more but the collision was the big deciding factor. I live in an area with a lot of hail and tornadic activity, a poor area of Texas, and our uninsured premiums are high. So its not the best price, I am sure to have my car insured well with someone I personally know and trust. I also got a free Hagerty Subscription. :)

Well I failed my inspection...

They needed a windshield wiper. I am now trying to figure out how to do a manual wiper for cheap.

On another note, I found that my starter solenoid wiring on my starter is undersized and is having a hard time engaging the flywheel with its current draw requirements. So when I start my car I get a loud click but no start. I thought it was my battery but after investigating with a ammeter, its pulling 30 amps through a small 16 gauge wire that is about 6 feet long or so. I am going to run new 12 gauge through the loom using the other wire to pull the length to the starter relay circuit in my dash.

Another quirk I discovered with my first test drive was that my car has zero traction. I have tandem return springs on my FiTECH EFI thottle body to harden up the go pedal but my car will fish tail in every gear through acceleration. My word this car is so fun but I cant get it to accelerate without spinning tires.

Otherwise I just went on my first 20 mile round trip and the car is great. I got tons of people rolling down their windows asking me if its a big block and I tell them its a small block stroker and they give me a ??? look. haha. I have to say without a doubt the 347 is a great match to these cars for pure power and fun. I just find the car very very light.

The T5Z is shifting like a boss and I am absolutely in love with the great smooth shifts. All the gauges are working perfect and the car feels great on the road. I still need to dial the front end alignment in but everything in time.

I just have to go back to the shop that inspected my car for FREE! and show them I have a clamp on wiper and I am on the road!

Bummer.... sorry you failed your inspection. I’ve seen a bunch of California cars with no wipers so hopefully that’s not an issue out here. Our body is still on the chassis so I’m no help for insurance.

I vote for TXAV8R too.... I hope it’s not taken. It just fits you :)

We’ve had SSNK4US for a couple of years... assigned to our boat trailer and sitting on our mantle for inspiration to buy our kit lol

Another one to add to your list if it’s taken.... CBRA@R @ = <3 lol

I will have an update on the inspection next week. I bought a manual boat window wiper for the inspection on amazon. Should be here soon. I cant wait. We have had beautiful fall weather here in Texas. 70 degree days and lots of sunshine. Should be good to run the car in the winter down here through many of the weeks leading up to our bitterly frozen month of February. Thanks for the kind words Kurt!

Funny, I’ve had “Venom-s” since the mid 90s and have hanged it on a number of vehicles - as a placeholder because my dream was to build a Cobra. Think I got it right about the time FFR started up...

So in order to pass inspection I had to buy a boat wiper, throw some rubber grommets on it and cut about an inch or more off the stainless steel rod to get it just right. All in all not bad and its actually effective but I will probably never use it.

Yay Texas wiper laws.

That's a pretty slick solution. I wonder if that would fly in California? I'd resigned myself to installing wipers to pass inspection, but I never plan to drive the thing in any sort of inclement weather so if I could get away with a manual wiper like this for inspection purposes and then ditch it afterwards that would be pretty sweet.

Took the car out on its first Cars and Coffee. I started a club for veterans and car guys at my church called CAMO CARS AND COFFEE.
We are meeting up with a British Classic club at one of our local coffee shops.

The car has been fantastic and getting things dialed in on the car is so much fun right now. The FiTech has been great to play with. I watched a dozen videos on how to get the Pro Tuning software to add fuel and to mess more with timing. All these little nuances I am working through right now will hopefully become videos in the future. I hope to help others through FiTech programming.

I took it to get gas at a local gas station and a guy asked me to pop the hood. He asked me what year and I told him it was a kit. He was blown away. I need to get better at snapping pics with people. This is an introverts dream come true. Really gets me out of my house and meeting new people.
