View Full Version : Yet Another What Engine Should I Use Question

I am shooting for a long-term, fairly high-end (interior quality and show-like finish) project with a goal of around 350hp (LSD/traction control/standalone/etc) and am torn on my engine choices. After years of thinking about this I'm ready to pull the trigger for the new year and have narrowed it down to two options.

1) EJ207 v7+: This is what I know will work best long-term as far as power, reliability, etc and have read excellent review after review for the 818. I can always upgrade/rebuild down the road. (~3000 delivered/~$6500 w/6spd transmission/lsd/ecu)

2) EJ205: This is what I want to do. Build my own engine from the ground up. Something I've always wanted to do on my own (done two as a team) and since I have about 18 months until I pick up the kit, I'm in no rush to finish. These parts seem plentiful and significantly cheaper. (~$250-500 + machine shop fees/misc parts)

Since I have few locals that I know of to chat about this kind of thing I'm hoping to get a sounding board more specific to this decision.

Totally expected that response from you...but I WANT to rebuild. Maybe I can find a EJ207 for under $1500. Nice build thread btw.

How are you planning on implementing traction control? The answer to this question ties in to engine management as the two would probably need to work together. If this question is secondary to producing a reliable 350 HP, then there are already a few threads that discus the topic at great detail.

This thread has little to do with how to produce a reliable 350hp nor how I will be implementing traction control. Just the decision between logic and desire, but I think that was clearly communicated in the first post.

what is the purpose of this thread? you already have your mind made up and when somebody asks you a question you give a typical NASIOC answer.

That is the fun of FFr you do not have to play by any ones rules but your own!!

Well, this got out of hand fast. I was just looking for an interesting opinion that may validate an EJ205/257 rebuild option. 1932, that was the type of answer I wanted to see. I apologize if my tone came off as offensive, but I was making my desire for the thread known. Try to have some fun people!
