Recent video posted of a normal WRX going through different driving conditions. He has a dual intake air temp gauge one is pre-intercooler and one is post-intercooler. Considering there is no air flow to the intercooler on our mid engine cars, it would be interesting to see how our set up compares. Thought you guys should see this. The video really becomes interesting 3/4 of the way through when he gets into higher RPM highway driving. I can't believe the difference in temps!!! It really makes you concerned that you need additional cooling via water/meth injection, AWIC, fans, ducting, etc.

I have ordered a dual air temp gauge and will post results in a few months when I get done with the coupe. I also have a Water/meth injection kit, and can post some results on comparisons with and without spraying to see how effective it is. Do we have any good info on how well the AWIC set up is bringing down the temps? I've herd its great but haven't seen videos or logs.

818 with AWIC. Type 14core and type 100 HE, IIRC.

Uh, I want one of those gauges.

I found that out on the first 818 I did. My AWIC runs about 7-10°F above ambient not matter how hard you run it. http://www.verycoolparts.com/awic.htm

Haha, shameless plug

My side mount AAIC runs 10-11 degrees C above ambient in road driving

Yes it is. The GRM car even in mild road driving was 70F° above ambient and over 100F° by the top of third gear. I've had eight of the 818's on the dyno, the ones with the A2A needed a break between pulls even with a 12" fan sitting right on top of them.

I can see that, the top of the engine is a terrible location for A2A. Any idea what the whole A2W weighs, including water?

The original location with the two little side vents on the engine cover is a ring land destruction just waiting to happen. There is absolutely no way to get adequate airflow, no airflow possible. That's why I've relocated AAIC to the side, looks like it will be fine for street and autocross use though I'd like more scoop that Kurk's. I wouldn't race one w/o AWIC

The parts weigh 38 lbs and hold about 2 gallons of water so that would be 52 lbs approximately. I just weighed the parts

This is from the video that Mechie3 link.

I just responded to a question on my video and it also applies to this thread. My AWIC kit is very similar the VCP kit above.

From youtube;

"I have three temperature readings. First one is not shown, it is the stock 06 WRX air temp sensor PRE TURBO. It tends to read 10-20 degrees above ambient depending on speed. This is because the air can get hot in the 818 at idle, and no vehicle speed.
The gauge in this video is hooked up to TWO sensors on the AWIC; One Before the IC and one after the IC.
So, no, did not mean to say pre-turbo, that is not shown in video. And yes, PRE and POST IC (IC effeciency) is shown in video.
It is incredible how well the Water Cooled IC works. All new passengers are fixated on that one gauge, maybe because it moves around so much with the throttle and speed?

On a typical 80F day, Full throttle pull,
Air into Turbo 100F,
Air between Turbo and IC, 210F
Air between IC and Motor, 90 F

Typical 80F day, just cruising @30mph
Air into Turbo 90F,
Air between Turbo and IC, 130F
Air between IC and Motor, 85 F

Typical 80F day, stuck at long light or waiting for AutoX run,
Air into Turbo 110F,
Air between Turbo and IC, 140F
Air between IC and Motor, 85 F

I got my AAIC parts from Craig at ZeroDB, he has a nice little water cooled kit too. The AAIC setup weighs no more than stock and is not complicated.

Beat me to it Wayne. That is what I was going to say for weight as well. I don't like the 50lbs of weight.... pushes me over 2,000lb curb weight. An Elise basically weighs what my 818 weighs and the Elise has better aero due to having a roof. However, my engine still works - so that's nice :D

I would love to see someone put a large A2A intercooler in the side vent with a really nice manifold around it that completely seals it to the vent. I'm going to do this on the left side of the car for my oil cooler. I think it could work for an A2A intercooler but would be a lot of work and then you'd have to find another place to pull your intake air from.
