View Full Version : turbo/exhaust spitting oil

I'm looking for some advice on what might be causing my turbo to be spitting oil, and it looks like quite a lot.

I am still in gocart mode and do not have an exhaust behind the turbo, so thats why I say the turbo is spitting oil.

I'm using an 03 WRX drivetrain. My only driving has been gocarting around my neighborhood, so not a lot of driving and not any really hard driving.

I recently installed a couple of catch cans following the raduim instructions. I did not seem to have oil coming out of the turbo before I installed the catch cans, but didn't want to rip them out before getting some input as to whether this is the likely cause of my problem, or something else more serious.

One catch can is inserted b/w the PVC and crankcase, and the other b/w the head breathers and turbo inlet.

There is no oil in the catch cans as far as I can tell.

The one difference that I have with the 03 WRX and the radium instructions seems to be the location of the PVC valve. My PVC valve is in the intake manifold. The Radum instructions indicate that the PVC valve is in the 3 way connector in the top of the crankcase, so my hoses do not exactly follow the instructions. So, where the instructions say to route a hose from the intake manifold to the catch can, and then the other hose from the catch can to the PVC valve in the 3 way connector - my hose goes from the PVC valve coming out of the manifold to the catch can, and the other hose goes from the catch can to the 3 way connector in the crank case. I think the Radium instructions have the catch can on one side of the PVC valve, and I have it on the other. Even if I have this wrong, I wouldn't think there would be that much oil going through those breather hoses.

Is it possible to suck oil into the exhaust/turbo through this catch can tubing? The output of the turbo is covered in oil and I can see it spitting after less than half mile of driving and probably not going over 3000 RPM.

The other thing of interest is that I have a 2 quart accusump that has been left open, so there have been a couple of extra quarts of oil sitting in the oil pan. Could this extra oil get into something that would travel to the exhaust? After startup the accusump is pressurized and that extra oil would go into the accusump.

Or, do I have some other problem that I need to look into? I've only go carted around the neighborhood 6 or 7 times before, but never saw oil spitting out of the turbo before.

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like you're getting no crankcase ventilation at all. The same thing happened to me years ago when I installed a cheap eBay catch can, and later realized the vent on top had never been fully drilled through, so I had unknowingly plugged my crankcase. This pressurizes your turbo's oil drain giving the oili no where to go except out the exhaust.
On my air oil separator, Perrin has you remove the stock PVC, and give you a new inline PVC, so you can run it the way your instructions say.

do you have a picture of your setup? which of the two radium kits did you get? did you check your pcv to make sure it wasn't stuck?

I created this diagram from memory, so I think it is correct. In stock configuration, the hose goes from the pcv in the intake to the left port on the 3-way to eliminate catch can 1. In stock configuration, the hose goes from the top port on the 3-way to the plugged port on the turbo intake.

Oh, and these are cheapo catch cans. The cans themselves do not vent.

I verified that this is the way the hoses are currently routed.

if you tee to the same port on the turbo inlet you may not be getting a good vacuum at both cans.... path of least resistance.

run them to a separate nipple so vacuum is more equalized and the inlet acts as a plenum.

Thanks for the input. I think I will scrap what I have and go with a Perrin AOS.

I installed a Perrin AOS and all is good now. I must have had restrictions in my home made catch cans.
