View Full Version : Trans Oil Level Question

After installing the limited slip and installing the engine and trans I add 3.7 qts of gear oil. I noticed that the dip stick show it was over filled but wasn't worried figured once the car was driven that would change.
Put 30 plus miles on it as a go kart, hand full of pulls on the dyno, the dip stick still reads about 1.5 quarts over full.
Nut and bolting and going over the car before I run the car next week I am concerned the trans is over full. Is the dip stick level high due to the trans angle? Did I miss something like misread how much oil the trans takes?
Thanks,
Mitch

Yes, dipstick level is high because the trans is angled downward. That's just how it is. Put a notch in your dipstick at the current fluid level and use that mark moving forward. That is what I did with mine and I have no issues with leaks or (knock on wood) blown transmission. Good luck with the race!

Run it over full on the dipstick. I'll dig up a pic with the trans that ran with right at full on the dipstick. It has no teeth on 5th gear...

Yes. Put in the full amount. I burned up 5th gear and reverse because I depended on the dipstick on my first transmission...

Hindsight, can you share you much higher your new mark is? I stupidly just eyeballed it and worry that I'm forgetting where the original height actually was

Sure here you go - hope this helps. You can just see the notch I made it the stick (which isn't perfectly accurate).

So it seems I've under filled my transaxle, and I just developed a high-pitched whine in 5th gear and a barely noticeable whine in 4th. Oil on the dip stick looks like it has metal in it. Assume I've done irreparable damage: what's the best course of action? Replace just those gears? Is there something else that makes sense to do while I'm in there?
