Is there any reason I can't use a older style 5mt? I might be able to get a TY752VB6EA from a friend so I know its history. He replaced it in his JDM STI for a 6mt before adding more power. It has RA gears and a helical front LSD and DCCD center. I know it's going to have less bolts to the engine, and a different clutch will be required, but is its still easily converted to fwd? Any issues removing the DCCD? Thanks.

A little more reading suggests I should be able to swap the phase 1 center diff housing with my phase 2 housing and that answers my question about using the block off plate and tranny mount.

I'm using a 1998 forester 5mt on a 2002 ej207 with a 2006 WRX clutch, flywheel, and fork. I had no issues with the install and the car shifts and drives no problem. Some say the trans can't hold up to the power but honestly I see it as no diff then any other 5mt before 2006. Mine was stupid cheap and all I could find local so was worth the test before spending money on more parts.
A lot of the pre 2002 Impreza guys run wrx and sti swaps without real problems. Strong 06+ clutch is all you really need. I'm using OEM 06 clutch kit from exedy.

There is something I read in the trans forum about oiling issues that make it so you can't use phase 1 boxes, but I stopped reading once I realized that the 99-00 JDM RA boxes were phase 2, which is what we bought.

I seen some mention of a possible oiling issue but it was theoretical at best in an old thread. I really hope this will work, it's a good price, cheaper than a new lsd.

So in the transmission thread it says "if using a phase 1 tranny, get a phase 2 center diff housing" or something along those lines. However after more reading it appears I was wrong earlier and the center diffs are not interchangeable between phases. And since the phase 1 transmission oil through their center diff and not 5th gear like phase 2, removing the center poses a problem.
Now the tranny may still be worth getting if the RA gears and diff will fit in the phase 2 case, but that's an even bigger question.

This is really interesting I have never read this before. It sounds like I may have oil issues at some point then if I actually get things driving harder. Hmm I may have to read more into this before I start getting body panels on the car.

Emailed subarugear as they sell a kit like FFR does for us. Turns out you can't use the old style cases. :/ you are correct on all the oil issues

I've been reading on this a bunch today, so confused.
From what I gather, converting a phase 1 transmission to fwd by removing the center diff and using a coupler could prove problematic. However, I think using a phase 2 center diff case on a phase 1 transmission may solve this. It's all about how the oil is distributed, and I think that's specific to the housing.

Yeah case should solve it here Is what I was told.
"Hi,
Yes you can use our mid engine kit on your trans. It is also correct that the oil catcher for the input shaft v earing lubrication on phase 1 engines is on the centre diff case side of the rear wall and is fed by the centre diff.
The way to correct this is to purchase our Cast Suvanose for $300 including the ty754 shift rod, recerse lockout and later style oil catcher. This is fed by 5th gear and therefore eliminates the issue."
Here is the site-http://www.subarugears.com/
Here is the kit they sell basically same thing we have---http://www.subarugears.com/Pricing/Pricing.html
At this point its time to cut my loss and get a newer style trans, for you it might be worth the parts to swap it over to get things to work. But for my 98 forester stock trans wont be worth the effort.

Can you drill the case and tap a fitting in with an oil pump? we have ours feeding through a cooler and back into the filler, with a pickup from the drain plug. You could put in a y connector and split the return between the two
